a journey back in time ……………………….part 2

By: Mantas Marangal Emmanuel Querubin

9th Degree Red and White Belt

sikaranpilipinas.com

After an absence of more than two decades, Emmanuel Querubin came home for a visit.

Political situation has changed. There is now a new President of the Republic and a new

administration. Supremo Meliton Geronimo has retired from political life and Sikaran

Brotherhood of the Philippines has expanded to the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the

Philippines with headquarters at the residence of Supremo Meliton Geronimo at Antipolo, Rizal.

There are new names, and new faces. Some, who were not yet born when the Sikaran

Brotherhood of the Philippines was started in 1958, are now sporting high ranks and titles.

Check of the the wide world of the of the web showed several who put together some

punching and kicking techniques and called themselves Sikaran grandmasters and masters. In

addition, some who were banished from the Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines put up their

own group and gave themselves preposterously high ranks with absurd titles. There was even a

group headed by a "religious master" who requires the members to recite passages from the bible

in order to pass the examination for promotion. And then there is a group headed by a foreigner

who cannot even spell Sikaran correctly and spelled it differently but copied the history written

by Emmanuel Querubin, to give whatever he is teaching ,a hint of validity.

However, all these are happening not just in the

Philippines but also in the other countries, some of

which I cannot even spell or pronounce the name.

All Supremo Meliton Geronimo did was laugh it

off because he knows the truth. In fact, he offered to

show his records about these people who now call

themselves masters, and grandmasters.

Although they have not seen each other for

several years, it was just like yesterday when they met

again. Meliton Geronimo and Emmanuel Querubin

hugged in thought, in word, and in person. They

continued where they left off decades ago without

missing a beat.

The first subject of their conversation was when

they will continue their interrupted projects of

publishing the History of Sikaran. It was in the 1960's

when they started the project. Due to circumstances beyond their control, only two manuals were

published. The first was the translation of the commands in teaching Sikaran, which was

approved by the Institute of National Language of the Department of Education. The second

manual was the first Original Balangkas Formal Exercise) of Sikaran.

Page 6: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

The next publication in line was the complete history

of Sikaran, and the Original Balangkas. Although Emmanuel

Querubin has already written the books and the manuals,

there was one very big problem. Both him, and Meliton

Geronimo did not have the means to go through with their

projects. In fact, they still owe the printing press for the

printing of the first two manuals. They even still owe the

photographer for the pictures used in the Instructional

Manual of the Sikaran Balangkas.

In as much as they do not

have the means to have the pictures

taken, Querubin did the next best

thing he can think of. While Meliton

Geronimo and Emmanuel Querubin

were performing the different

balangkas, Querubin's younger

brother Precioso was illustrating the movements. Fortunately, these

illustrations were saved by the Querubin brothers.

There were some who tried to write the History of Sikaran, but

Meliton Geronimo and Emmanuel Querubin know that they are the

only persons who can write it. When the Sikaran elders were on

their prime, they

were interviewed

by Meliton

Geronimo, and

Emmanuel

Querubin. In fact,

when pictures of

the Sikaran elders

were taken, during

the interview, only

Meliton Geronimo

and Emmanuel

Querubin were

present.

Today all of the Sikaran elders have

passed away. There is nobody still alive,

who were part of Sikaran in the late 1800’s

and early 1900’s. Every word they said

during the interview is now the final truth that

is “carved in stone.” Nobody can

question any part of the Sikaran History as

written by Meliton Geronimo and

Emmanuel Querubin, because they were

Page 7: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

not there.

With the retirement of Meliton Geronimo, both from the Philippine Air Force and

political life, and the retirement of Emmanuel Querubin from the City of Oakland Police

Department, they now have enough time and resources to work on the projects they held in

abeyance for more than 40 years. In 2009, the

Sikaran History book, entitled “Sikaran The

Fighting Art of the Filipino Farmer” came off

the press. At last, the book started four decades

ago is now on the market. It is now

Copyrighted by the National Library of the

Philippines and the Library of Congress of the

United States. After all these years, Meliton

Geronimo and Emmanuel Querubin’s dreams

are now becoming a reality.

Three years later, the second book,

entitled “Original Balangkas of Sikaran” came

off the press.

Also in 2012, Meliton Geronimo’s

achievements in Sikaran was recognized when

he was bestowed the awards during the First

Filipino Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Meliton Geronimo Recipient of

Grandmaster Icon and Pioneer Awards

There is only one true Sikaran Grandmaster

and that is Meliton C. Geronimo. There are nu-

merous self-proclaimed Sikaran Grandmasters

but only Meliton Geronimo was granted the title Grandmaster and the rank of 10th Degree Red

Belt by an international martial art entity, the Asian Karate Association. Meliton Geronimo is

also the only person vested the appellation of dignity and honor as Sikaran Supremo (Sikaran

Leader) by the last living Sikaran haris and elders of Baras, Rizal.

Under the leadership of Meliton Geronimo, the Philippines garnered seven gold medals

in six Asian Karate Championships, an accomplishment that stands unchallenged and un-

equalled. The World Sikaran Brotherhood, founded and headed by Grandmaster Meliton C.

Geronimo is the oldest and largest Filipino Martial Art association in the Philippines. It also has

affiliates all over the world. There are thousands of members of the World Sikaran Brotherhood

in the rest of Asia, in Australia, both North, Central, and South America, in the Middle East, in

Europe, and in Africa.

Through the efforts of Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo, the Municipality of Baras in the

Province of Rizal acknowledges Baras as the birthplace of Sikaran and proudly displays it on the

official letterhead of the Municipality with the words “Home of Sikaran” and the seal of the

World Sikaran Brotherhood. Sikaran has also been proclaimed as Rizal’s Official Provincial

Sport and designated the last Saturday of March as Sikaran Festival Day.

Sikaran Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo, receiving the trophy for

Grandmaster Icon and Pioneer Award of Sikaran; from former Judge

Pamaran and from Mrs. Zubiri.

Grandmaster

Meliton Geronimo’s

influence extends

outside the Philip-

pines. Two Malay-

sians who were in-

troduced to Sikaran in

the 1960’s have

upwardly evolved to

create their systems.

Clement Soo (Reg.

No. 257) now the

President of the

Karate League of

Malaysia created the

Malaysian Goshin

Ryu Karate System,

which is recognized

by the World Karate

Federation. Loke

Meng Kwang (Reg.

No. 354) is the

Grandmaster of the

Ran Yi Wu Kwan

Tang Sou Dao and is

a member of the

British Martial Arts

Commission. For all

these unequalled

achievements,

Meliton Geronimo is

indeed the Icon and

Most Distinguished

Filipino Martial Arts

of Sikaran

Grandmaster.

Born on

March 10, 1927,

Meliton Geronimo is the son of Cipriano Geronimo the last Sikaran Hari (champion) of Baras,

Rizal and the grandson of Bonifacio Geronimo the last and only Hari ng mga Hari (champion of

champions) of Baras, Rizal the birthplace of Sikaran. The Geronimo Sikaran lineage is the only

progenitor of this historically original Filipino fighting art. Meliton Geronimo pioneered the

transformation of this 16th century art into the 20th century and now the 21st century. Through

Page 9: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

his dedication and efforts, Sikaran was introduced outside the country and became an

international martial art.

WORLD SIKARAN BROTHERHOOD OF THE PHILIPPINES

GOLDEN JUBILEE AND HALL OF FAME

By: Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.

9th Degree Red and White Belt

President (WSBP / WSB)

On November 6, 2016, The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines will celebrate

its golden anniversary. It was on November 6, 1966 when the Asian Karate Association,

composed of Japan, Korea, China and the Phillipines recognized Sikaran as a distinct unarmed

fighting art of Filipino origin and named Meliton C. Geronimo Grandmaster with the rank of

10th Degree Red Belt.

It is no coincidence that November 6, 1966 has a close harmonic connection to the

element of fire. November 6, 1966 is a Sunday. In the Gregorian calendar, it is the 310th day of

the year.

Sikaran is like the element of fire. It is associated with energy, assertiveness, and passion.

Sikaran, like fire does not know fear or doubt. There is no mean tricks in Sikaran, and like fire it

consumes everything on its path. Sikaran is an important part of Filipinp culture and vital to the

development of Philippine civilization.

This jubilee will be marked by festivities worthy of this grand event. A Sikaran Hall of

Fame will be held in conjunction with the Golden Anniversary.

In 1966, the original plan was to invite the Grandmasters who were invovled in the

recognition of Sikaran as a distinct fighting art from the Philippines on its 50th Anniversary. But

this will not be so. Grandmasters from Japan, Kyojiro Furusawa and Koichi Kondo have passed

away. Grandmasters Dr. Kwai Byeung Yun of Ji Do Kwan Kong Soo Doo, and Hwang Kee of

Moo Doo Kwan Tang Soo Doo of Korea have likewise passed away. With the dissolution of the

Asian Karate Association in 1970, we have lost contact with Chinese Grandmaster Chua Tiong

Ki, but there were uncomfirmed reports that he too passed away.

Only Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo is still alive, albeit at 88th years old, he is suffering

from the ill effects of several bouts with stroke.

The only other master who is still alive and was part of the early stages of Sikaran is Kim

Soo Jin, now 10th Degree Red Belt of Ji Do Kwan (now a part of Korean Tae Kwon Do.

From the early beginnings of Sikaran in the Philippines, it has now spread its wings in the

four corners of the world.

The golden jubilee is still 2 years away but preparations are now being taken to insure

that it will be the greatest event in Sikaran until Novermber 6, 2066, when Sikaran celebrates its

centennial or diamond anniversary.

SIKARAN AND ARNIS DE MANO

By: Mantas Marangal Emmanuel Querubin

9th Degree Red and White Belt

sikaranpilipinas.com

World Sikaran Brotherhood

There was a time when the official name of the World Sikaran Brotherhood was World

Sikaran-Arnis Brotherhood of the Philippines. In fact even Provincial Ordinance No. 002-s.2010,

declaring Sikaran Rizal's Provincial Sport states: "Sikaran is distinct from other forms of martial

arts such as Tae Kwon Do and Karate, because Sikaran incorporates Arnis de Mano to this

predominantly foot fighting art technique which was taught and propagated locally and

internationally for the past forty-four years thru the tutelage of former Baras Mayor Meliton C.

Geronimo, 10th Degree Red Belt Grandmaster of Sikaran." Likewise, Meliton Geronimo is also

an expert in the Doble Baston de Abaniko style of Arnis de Mano. In fact his expertise in Arnis

also made him an expert in the use of the Latigo (whip).

However, in deference to Arnis Philippines, the National Sports Association recognized

by the Philippine Olympic Committee, the term Arnis was dropped from the official title World

Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines.

The term may be removed but the spirit of

Arnis will always be part of Sikaran. There are several

schools and styles of Arnis practiced by the officers

and members of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of

the Philippines. The new President, Pantas Meliton S.

Geronimo, Jr., has also adopted the Balintawak style

of Arnis aside from the style his father and

grandfather taught him. Mantas Elpidio Seletaria, Jr.,

International Coordinator is an adept in the Modern

Arnis style developed by his father-in-law Professor

Remy Presas. Mantas Louelle Lledo, Jr., State

Director for New Jersey, inherited the Sistemang

Praksiyon Bernarte Brokil from his father-in-law.

Mantas Andy Sanano, Jr., USA Country Director, and

Florida State Director is propagating his family's

Trece Hampas System. Mantas Lledo and Mantas

Sanano, have authored a book in Arnis de Mano

entitled "Filipino Martial Arts Education for Arnis de

Mano." Mantas Emmanuel Querubin, on the other

hand is an exponent of the Quatro Puntas Kruzada of

Daniel Rendal. Most of the high-ranking members in

the Philippines are proponents of the Lapunti School

of Arnis de Mano. Mantas Armie Esparcia, Italy's

Country Director, as of late seems to be favoring the

Doce Pares style of Dionisio Canete.

Supremo Meliton Geronimo, a

Master of the Doble Baston de

Abaniko style of Arnis de Mano.

Page 23: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

Although there are as many styles of Arnis de

Mano as there are dialects in the Philippines, presently,

there are typically two classifications of Arnis de Mano,

the contemporary, and the classical. The contemporary

may be sub-classified, as "Combat Arnis" and "Sport

Arnis." On the other hand, the classical may be sub-

divided, into "Traditional" (sometimes also referred to

by others as cultural) and the "Esoteric."

Whatever the classification they are all bound

together by three common aspects: part art, part science,

and part sports. With the advent of the Matawguro

Association, it is hoped that now they will also be

bound as Filipino Martial Arts Education. However, the

priority and purpose of training can still differentiate

each classification.

There are schools of Arnis de Mano, which

concentrate in teaching the art mainly as a means of

defense and as a combative art, such as in police

agencies and the military. The emphasis of their training

is in the combat aspects of Arnis. These schools do not engage much in "scoring points" and

winning trophies or medals. To them, Arnis de Mano is 100% strategy of neutralizing the

opponent in an exponential rate to counteract and eliminate the threat.

Then there are schools, the priority of which is to

broaden their base of following and income, by winning

trophies and medals in competitions. These schools may be

classified as the Sports Arnis Schools. To these schools, the

gauge of whether the school is good or not, is by the number of

tournaments they win. To them, Arnis de Mano is 100%

"scoring points" and garnering as many trophies and medals as

they can. Understandably, these are normally commercial

schools.

"Sports Arnis" is an attempt to keep alive the "live

blade" encounters of yesteryears. However, because these

confrontations, are against the law and against survival

instincts, padded sticks and protective gear have taken the place

of live blades in an "all-out survival of the fittest" contests.

Although the techniques and strategies may be the same

as contemporary Arnis, the ideals of classical Arnis de Mano

are entirely different.

Mantas Elpidio Seletaria, Jr., is as

good with the Tonfa as he is with

the Arnis sticks.

Arnis de Mano book

Lledo, Jr., and Mantas Andy

Sanano, Jr.

Page 24: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

The "traditional" Arnis de Mano is part art, part science, and part sports. As an art, Arnis

de Mano is a dance form that is uniquely Filipino. Watching a skilled arnisador perform the

techniques of abecedario and other strategies accompanied by music is like watching birds in

formation while in flight. The graceful transition from one motion to another is both natural and

energetic. Style and form in traditional Arnis de Mano, is just as important as speed and power,

perhaps even more. The laws of

physics and motion must govern

every movement to achieve style

and form. During Arnis

gatherings and events,

practitioner of traditional

Arnis will demonstrate

their art, rather than compete in

tournaments. To them

displaying the grace and beauty of

Arnis is like displaying the

beauty of a painting or

architecture. To them beauty

in the execution of a strategy, is

more of a sports than trying to

knock the @#$%&* of

the other guy.

The least talked-about type of Arnis de Mano is the "Esoteric" type. This type is also

governed by the three aspects of art, science, and sport, but with the added aspect of

"spiritualism."

In the olden days, "Esoteric Arnis" with

all the combative aspects was probably the most

commonly practiced. Before the coming of the

Spaniards, the country that is now the Philippines,

was a nature-worshipping pagan country. Every

family has its own talisman or charm (anting-

anting or agimat), which avert evil and bring good

fortune, magical and miraculous powers. The

anting-anting or agimat came in different forms,

shapes, and size. The oracion (incantations) also

came in different languages or sounds. With the

Christianization of the Philippines, the culture,

beliefs, and the agimat took on a different

character. The most common agimat or anting-

anting came in the form of the crucifix, the rosary,

or the scapular. Spanish and Latin became the

most common incantation or oracion. Arnisadors do not go to a possible confrontation without

Daniel Rendal, originator of Quatro Puntas Kruzada.

Supremo Meliton Geronimo displays his

skill in the use of the live blade by

cutting to pieces the trunk of a banana

plant.

Page 25: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

their agimat and their oracion. In fact, they do not step out of their homes without uttering some

magical words or rubbing their agimat. The Filipinos slowly transitioned their pagan practices to

Christian practices as they were converted, and started basing their anting-anting and oracion

more on their newfound religion. The prayers in Latin or Spanish of "Our Father," "Hail Mary"

and "Glory Be," became the most common oracion. The crucifix or the scapular of the Virgin

Mary, hanging on the neck, became the most common anting-anting.

However, there were still those who hanged on to the old tradition and have not

"Christianized" their anting-anting and oracion. Most of these were the manggamot (healers),

arbularyo (herbalist) and the hilot (bonesetter). In addition, those who practice the "healing" arts

are adept in the "killing" arts. Could have this been a Chinese influence? In China, before

learning the "killing" arts, one must train in the "healing" arts.

In the 1950's, while vacationing in my mom's province of Bauan, Batangas, I heard that it

was time for my Lolo Andres, the local manggamot to fight the "spirit warriors," to restore the

vitality of his healing powers and his fighting skill. Lolo Andres did this every Good Friday

midnight, in a "secret" place hidden from view and away from prying eyes. As a child, he was

initiated in the mysteries of the esoteric and had done this ritual since then without fail. When his

father passed away, it was rumored his father passed on to him his anting-anting. Following the

example of his late father, he became the barrio manggamot (healer). Another trade he inherited

from his father was selling mosquito nets and mats, where he learned and became an expert in

the use of the tungkli or pingga, a 4 to 6 foot flat-pole made of bahi (ironwood).

On the night of the ritual, I sneaked out of the house to follow Lolo Andres, without

telling anybody. I hid behind a tree from a distance, and watch Lolo Andres performed some

ceremonials. Lolo Andres all of a sudden started swinging his tungkli against what may have

been an opponent, but whom I cannot see. The "fight" against the "spirit warrior" went on for

minutes then hours. I strained to see if he really has an opponent, but all I can see was Lolo

Andres in the dim light of the moon. Finally, after several hours, at the break of dawn, Lolo

Andres started for home. As he passed me half-crouched next to the tree half awake and half

asleep, all he said was "kaya pala" (no wonder). When I got home, my aunts and uncles scolded

me and said what I did was very dangerous for me and for Lolo Andres. They said that Lolo

Andres had a very hard time because he was "carrying me on his shoulders." They also said that

the "spirit warriors" could have killed Lolo Andres or me. However, I was not afraid. I had my

own anting-anting crucifix hanging on my neck and I have recited my oracion. I was even

boasting to myself that my God was stronger and more powerful, than all the "spirit warriors,"

which I cannot see.

Lolo Andres after that incident refused to teach me anymore except the first technique he

taught me and since then he has not spoken to me until he passed away. Lolo Andres supposedly

passed his anting- anting to his son, but his son never became a successful healer because he

indulged too much in alcohol and died at an early age, not amounting to anything like his late

father.

Page 26: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

Jimmy Galez, member Council of

Administrators, Philippine Karate

Association.

In the early 1960's, I met Jimmy Galez, for the first time. His demeanor and mannerisms

suggested that he is a practitioner of "Esoteric Arnis." Having learned my lesson with the

incident with Lolo Andres I was cautious with my dealings with Jimmy Galez.

One time, I attended a martial arts tournament in

Baguio City, where Jimmy Galez was also a guest. Jimmy

demonstrated his brand of Arnis. With flowing long hair,

facial hair and an ornate gown-like cassock, his moves

reminded me of Lolo Andres when he was supposed to be

fighting "spirit Warriors." During the break, Jimmy and I

had a friendly conversation. He confided that he is indeed

an "initiated member of Esoteric Arnis" and in fact has

just came back from his mountain training to energize and

revitalize not only his skill but also his agimat. When I

told him that most in the martial arts circle considered him

too eccentric, and was not considered a serious martial

artist, he just smiled. When he asked me what I think of

him, I just smiled in return. Interestingly, those who did

not consider Jimmy Galez a serious martial artist avoid

crossing his path. A serious martial artist or not, Jimmy Galez is a well-trained and highly skilled

confident but humble individual.

The height of the mistrust in anting-anting and "Esoteric Arnis," came in the mid 1960's

when the Lapiang Malaya, headed by Valentin delos Santos, was massacred by the military and

police who responded to suppress their "uprising." Armed only with bolos and their anting-

anting, the Lapiang Malaya was no match against M16's and 45 caliber bullets. After this

incident, the belief in anting-anting and oracion, although still practiced, became less vocal.

Practitioners of "Esoteric Arnis" for fear of being ostracized, shied away.

In 1967-1968, I was commissioned to be the Head Foreign Instructor of the Karate

Association of Malaysia. During a Chinese Festival I watched a group doing what they call

"Spirit Kung Fu," Bystanders who were supposed to be ignorant in Kung Fu all of a sudden will

fall into a trance and be transformed into Kung Fu masters when "Spirit Warriors" possess their

body. They start doing Kung Fu exercises and maneuvers for hours. Then as sudden as their

transformation into Kung Fu masters, they will return to normal "without any memory of their

experience." While watching them, I was reminded of Lolo Andres and Jimmy Galez. I went

back to our gym with doubts about what I just witnessed. I wanted to dismiss it as a fake ritual.

However, that same day I also watched fire walking where devotees carried about 100 pounds of

icons of their gods supported by stakes that penetrate their bodies. It took these devotees more

than 10 minutes to traverse the over 20 feet long burning coal and rocks while dancing and

chanting their "secret prayers." I examined the feet and body of these devotees after the ritual but

none of them even showed traces of being burned, injured or even discomfort. Although there

were marks of the stakes, there was no wound or blood. Then I remembered some devotees in

the Philippines, who are "crucified" on Good Friday, as a form of penance. To this day, I have

Page 27: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

kept an open mind about things that I cannot explain and it has helped me, in the martial arts and

in life in general.

A firm believer in what is right, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. starts the martial arts education

of his son Zach Ramsey Meliton S. Geronimo IV, at a very early age.

"Start a child on the right path while he is young and when he is

old he will not forget what he was taught"………….. Proverbs 22-6

Several years from now he too will be ready to take over the leadership of the World Sikaran

were his Sikaran uniform and his Arnis de Mano stick.

SPECIAL SECTION;

TANAY, RIZAL 'HANE" FESTIVAL Text and Photos By: Emily Zamora Samillano

Administrative Assistant to the President,

Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.

Located some 35 miles East of Manila, is the Municipality of

Tanay, in the Province of Rizal. Tanay (originally named Monte de

Tan-ay), is a First Class Municipality with almost 100,000 citizens.

It is bordered by Antipolo City in the Northwest, containing

portions of the Sierra Madre Mountains. To the West are the

municipalities of Baras, Morong, and Teresa. To the East is General Nakar of Quezon Province.

It is bordered to the South by the Municipality of Pililla, Santa Maria (Laguna) and Laguna de

Bay.

There is an annual festival in Tanay that is unique, not only in name but also in purpose.

It is called "Hane" Festival. "Hane" is an idiom peculiar to Tanay. It has many meanings and no

meaning at the same time. Some say it means "OK," some say it means "Go Ahead." Whatever it

means, it is a form of artistic expression that is characteristic of an individual, a period, or a

movement, and in this case of the municipality.

The natives of Tanay always add the expression "hane" whenever they say anything. In

Batangas, the idiomatic expression is "ala eh."

Honorable Jaime Vista,

Vice-Mayor of Tanay

and an avid supporter

of the Tanay Sikaran

Martial Arts Club.

The 4th"Hane" Festival was held on November 12. It started with a parade of the various

civic, social, religious , sport, and various school groups. The culmination is a street dancing

contest and celebration, won by the University of Rizal System of Sampaloc, Tanay. All the

celebrants were soaked in the rain. However, as they say, "the show must go on rain or shine." It

coincided with the 408th Founding Anniversary of Tanay, Rizal.

Due to the rain, the lens of the camera was wet blurring the pictures.

Page 37: TWO EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS OF … · supremo meliton c. geronimo pantas meliton s. geronimo, jr. and mantas dalubhasa elpidio seletaria, ... united states

The other participants wore colorful attires.

First in the parade was the Tanay Sikaran

Martial Arts Club headed by Emily Zamora

Samillano.

The Tanay Sikaran Club did not win the Street Dancing Contest

but they wowed the audience with their display of their Sikaran

abilities.

GOLDEN JUBILEE AND HALL OF FAME

By: Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.

9th Degree Red and White Belt

President, World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines

World Sikaran Brotherhood

On November 6, 2016, The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines will celebrate

its golden anniversary. It was on November 6, 1966 when the Asian Karate Association,

composed of Japan, Korea, China and the Phillipines recognized Sikaran as a distinct unarmed

fighting art of Filipino origin and named Meliton Geronimo Grandmaster with the rank of 10th

Degree Red Belt.

It is no coincidence that November 6, 1966 has a close harmonic connection to the

element of fire. November 6, 1966 is a Sunday, a holyday. In the Gregorian calendar, it is the

310th day of the year. There are 55 days remaining until the end of this year.

November 6, 1966 falls under the zodiac sign of Scorpio. The modern birthstone for this

month is Topaz.

The mythical animal representative of this date is the Horse. Interestingly, the first two

kicks of Sikaran were influenced by the horse. The front leg kick is called padamba in Sikaran

and the rear leg kick is called sipang kabayo.

In the very old art of astrology, fire is the element on this date. It is no surprise that when

Meliton C. Geronimo was born on March 10, 1927, the sphere of influence of his birth is the

element of fire.

Sikaran is like the element of fire. It is associated with energy, assertiveness, and passion.

Sikaran, like fire does not know fear or doubt. There is no mean tricks in Sikaran, and like fire it

consumes everything on its path. Sikaran is an important part of Filipino culture and vital to the

development of Philippine civilization

Spiritual Fire. Fire stands for emotions free from restraint, such as love and happiness, but also

hatred and anger. Fire stands for fair fight. Fire does not need mean tricks or dirty techniques.

Fire is the element burning in your consciousness, moving you to fight for the things you believe

in, in a manner that is fair and square. Fire represents a vision, a quality, a conviction, not only as

a commitment but also a realization. If the Fire has caught something, it fights for it until it has

consumed it or has burned it down, destroyed it. It can be extinguished or it can extinguish by

itself. Fire doesn’t know fear or doubt. It doesn’t know mercy or shame either. If it wants

something, it will get over everything on its path to get it. Fire also stands for inspiration,

compassion, love, longing and lust.

Only Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo is still alive, albeit at 87th years old, he is suffering

from the ill effects of several bouts with stroke.

The only other master who is still alive and was part of the early age of Sikaran is Kim

Soo Jin, now 10th Degree Red Belt of Ji Do Kwan (now a part of Korean Tae Kwon Do).

Significant events took place on November 6, 1966. Of course everybody in the Sikaran

world are aware that it was on this important date that the Asian Karate Association recognized

Sikaran as a distinct Filipino art of fighting and declared Meliton C. Geronimo, Grandmaster of

Sikaran with the rank of 10th Degree Red Belt.

However, the recognition of Sikaran is not the only noteworthy occurrence of that day.

There are several events that took place in November 1966. Some were good, some were not so

good. Some changed the course of history, some changed people's life.

In China Chairman Mao Tse Tung launched China's Cultural Revolution and begun the

purging of the intellectuals who were against Mao's administration.

An earthquake in Turkey left 2,394 dead and thousands injured.

In India, Indira Gandhi was elected Prime Minister.

In the field of science, Soviet Union lands Luna 9 on the moon early in the year. A few

months later the United States followed by a soft moon landing of Surveyor I.

In the field of fashion Miniskirts are in.

In the field of health, cigarette packets in the United States must carry the health

warning "Caution! Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health."

In the early part of 1966, Ronald Reagan enters politics becoming governor of

California.

Bill Russell became the first black coach in NBA history (Boston Celtics).

Among the Sikaran members who were there on that memorable day, one who is still

very active to this date is Emmanuel es Querubin. Emmanuel Querubin is now 9th Degree Red

and White Belt and holds the appointive position of Executive and Technical Assistant to the

Grandmaster and Director for Research and Standards.
