Although many of our children spend a lot of time learning their weekly spellings it is apparent that many children struggle to remember the words and to apply the spelling patterns and rules in their free writing. We know how important your contribution is in helping your child learn how to spell accurately and therefore from Monday 21 st November, we will be sending spelling rules or games home for children to consolidate their learning in spelling. The children will have had an opportunity to play a spelling game in class, so they will be able to explain how the game works. Spelling games are designed to help your child with an aspect of spelling that can help them with many words as opposed to just learning one spelling in isolation. If your child is given a spelling rule task this may come in a game format and a list. Children will practise the word, find rhymes or words within words to help them spell it and more importantly, apply it in their independent writing. e.g. accommodate = 2 couches and 2 mats thought = oh you good horse The children will then be asked to use these words in their writing where possible and highlight it in yellow, to show where they have used it. Your child will be asked to write the 'word of the week' in their reading diaries so if you wish to practise it,

Spelling Review – Key Stage 2

We have reviewed the way in which we teach spelling at Woolston Community Primary School. Although many of our children spend a lot of time learning their weekly spellings it is apparent that many children struggle to remember the words and to apply the spelling patterns and rules in their free writing.

We know how important your contribution is in helping your child learn how to spell accurately and therefore from Monday 21st November, we will be sending spelling rules or games home for children to consolidate their learning in spelling.

This could be:

Suffixes such as -ed -ing Rules such as doubling consonants in words like clap - clapping  Homophones (there, their, they're /  sea/see) Plurals (fox - foxes, knife - knives)  Grammar related activities

Furthermore, in class we will be working on a "word of the week," where all words will be taken from the National Curriculum. The meaning of the word will be taught and then displayed in the classroom. Children will practise the word, find rhymes or words within words to help them spell it and more importantly, apply it in their independent writing. e.g. accommodate = 2 couches and 2 mats thought = oh you good horse

The children will then be asked to use these words in their writing where possible and highlight it in yellow, to show where they have used it. Your child will be asked to write the 'word of the week' in their reading diaries so if you wish to practise it, you can. We will also send home the full spelling list for your child's National Curriculum year, for your own knowledge.

If you have any further questions, please ask your child's teacher at parents evening.

Thank you for your continued support.
