Pastor’s Desk

Time to say goodbye... “Quando sono sola sogno all’orizzontee mancan le parole”

For the past six years Carrie Stewart has been a constant presenceat St. Mary’s liturgies. Sadly, this weekend is her last as AssistantDirector of Music Ministry. During her time with us Carrie has played forover a thousand weekend masses, provided music for about fivehundred weddings and as many funerals. She has accompanied all of ourweekly rehearsals, as well as feast days, school liturgies, Confirmations,Cornerstone celebrations, First Communions and many more liturgiesthat are too many to list.

Throughout her time here, Carrie has not only shared with us her gift ofmusic, but also has truly shown that this job has been her ministry.Whether through a kind word to a family during their time of grief, orhelping a bride and groom plan the ceremony they always dreamed of,Carrie has shared in the joys and sorrows of many families in our parish.

Sadly, today we must let go. We will miss her presence, but wish herwell as she embarks on a new journey in her life. God Bless.

Filling a hole like the one that Carrie will leave was a truly daunting task.We searched for months without finding a suitable candidate. Ourprayers were answered with a resumé from a California musician, JohnHerbert. John, a New Jersey native, went to college and worked inCalifornia for 10 years. He has come home to share his spirit, musicand faith with the parishioners of St. Mary’s. Welcome John!

Welcome Home! These were the words that greeted ourSt. Mary’s contingent as we arrived at Nazareth Farm in West

Virginia on a steamy Sunday evening earlier this month. After aneight-hour trip it was gratifying to be greeted with smiles and hugsby the Naz staff, the majority of whom are in their early 20’s just outof college. From that point forward my fellow chaperone LouiseDecker and our six teenagers and I realized we were about to embarkon an amazing week-long service retreat along with teen volunteersfrom Long Island, Syracuse and Binghamton, New York.

Nazareth Farm is a Catholic-Christian Community in rural WestVirginia that is dedicated to transforming lives through a service-retreatexperience. The program is based on the Gospel of Jesus Christthrough the cornerstones of community, simplicity, prayer and service.

Our days were full of prayer—morning prayer every day, before each meal, before and after our work and in the evening to endthe day. The teens were involved in the planning and leading of theprayer. It was inspiring to see teenagers open to the Holy Spirit, engagein faith sharing and experience dynamic and transforming prayer.

By living without television, computers, cell phones and iPods, wewere free to “tune-in” to one another. Group games and conversationwere encouraged in order to develop relationships with one another. In the spirit of conservation, we were asked to take only three showersduring the week, two of them outdoor bucket showers. We ate withoutpaper napkins and were asked to eat all that we placed on our plates. Theteens particularly enjoyed licking their plates clean, literally, at the endof each meal. To conserve water we were asked to use outhousesrather than indoor plumbing. Throughout the week I did not hear onecomplaint concerning any of these suggestions in promoting thecornerstone of simplicity. In fact, one of our teens was upset that hewas able to see what time it was when he rode in a vehicle with aclock on the way to a work site—no clocks at Nazareth Farm!

Our group was split up during the week and placed in one of five workgroups that went out each day to do home repair for people who cannotafford the labor or cannot make the repairs themselves. The teenswere involved in painting, roofing, siding and splitting wood. There wasalso a group that cooked the meal and cleaned the dorms and bathrooms.

While the work was an important component of the day, an emphasiswas placed on building relationship with those whose houses werebeing worked on. The teens were encouraged to sit down and talk withthe homeowners. In many cases, the groups shared a meal with the

Fr. Larry, with Louise Decker and six St. Mary’s teenagers, spent aweek at Nazareth Farm. Here’s their story:

host family. As they claim on their web site, “Nazareth Farm is abouthome repair, but more importantly it is about people.”

Finally, everything we did, we did in community; we ate together, did dishes together, worked together, prayed together and spentour free time together. When St. Mary’s crew came together mid-week to talk about the experience, the teens remarked how quicklythey became friends with the teens from the other parishes. Tearswere shed at the thought of leaving in just a few days.

As we said our goodbyes at the end of the week, I could not helpbut recognize that we were all changed by our experience at NazarethFarm. We learned lessons we will carry with us as we journey on inthis world. Throughout our lives, all of us are presented with events, experiences and people that have the potential to change us, to helpus grow in wisdom, compassion and love and ultimately a deeperrelationship with God. May we have the courage to allow ourselvesto be transformed by the grace of God by choosing to live simply, inservice to and with creation through a life devoted to prayer.

I leave you with a message from one of the teens who participated inthe service retreat:

Nazareth Farm changed the way I look at life. It helped me realizehow fortunate I am to have a house that does not need new sidingor roofing. It made me realize that you do not need five gallons ofwater to take a shower, yet we use about sixty gallons during aregular 15-minute shower. At Naz Farm we were greeted with goodmorning and good night hugs and when we came home we werewelcomed by the home crew. Every meal was home cooked andevery day we switched jobs. We made friends we will never forgetand met people who changed our lives.

Servant Leadership—In his famous essay on Servant Leader-ship in 1970, Robert Greenleaf wrote, “The servant-leader is servantfirst…It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. Then, conscious choices brings one to aspire to lead.” This is verydifferent from our culture where often people aspire to be leaders first. The notion of Servant-Leadership is cast in the image of JesusChrist who, “did not come to be served, but to serve.” (Mt 28:20)St. Mary’s Servant Leadership program will be starting up again thisfall. A Thursday evening and Saturday morning group will beginmeeting on October 7 and 9 respectively. The Servant Leadershipprogram is an adult faith formation experience that will help peopleto look at their lives through the lens of faith and discover theparadox of being both a servant and a leader. If you are interested in learning more about the Servant Leadershipprogram, an Information Evening will be hosted on Thursday,September 16, 7:30 PM in the Carnevale Center. For more information, contact Steve Kass (973.879.3102) or Laura Graziano (973.696.9072).

The Gospel of Luke—You may have noticed that most of ourSunday readings are coming from the Gospel of Luke this year. This fall, St. Mary’s will be hosting a four-evening series on thisGospel that will help adults understand how to read and interpretSacred Scripture and the major themes that are presented in Luke’sGospel. If you are interested in learning more about this Gospel, pleasemark your calendar for Tuesdays at 7:30 PM in the Carnevale Center:October 5 and 19, November 2 and 16.

Food Pantry— Eggs and School SuppliesFirst the egg scare: this month we received 150 dozen fresh eggsfrom the Community Food Bank. One batch of these eggs camefrom a farm in Indiana which was a little scary, but it turned out thatIowa was the problem area. Then the plant codes were verified, indicating they were all OK, thankfully! PS: Believe it or not, one ofour veteran volunteers figured out a way of fitting all 150 dozeneggs into our refrigerator - duct-taping the door shut helped :-)The HOPE annual school kit collection resulted in a tremendousamount of school supplies which were given this month to all of ourfamilies with school-age children. They were, of course, all well-received by the families. Thank you! (Isn’t it a bit sad to see schoolstarting and summer ending?)

International Day of Peace

In a resolution sponsored by the United Kingdom and Costa Ricain 1981, the UN General Assembly established the International

Day of Peace, now celebrated on September 21. The GeneralAssembly suggested that “Peace Day should be devoted tocommemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both withinand among all nations and peoples…”

The Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization, in his address to the World Summit for Social Develop-ment said: “We need to build not only geographical but spiritualbridges between people and strengthen the intellectual, culturaland communication linkages between our societies. Let us standready to participate in the effort to promote social integration andcreate a culture of peace.”

Anyone, anywhere, can celebrate Peace Day. It can be as simple aslighting a candle at noon, or just sitting in silent meditation. Or itcan involve getting your co-workers, organization or communityengaged in a large event.
