You know, sometimes I wish Jesus would just lighten up a bit with his words. But, here we go again! We are presented with
words from Jesus in today’s gospel that probably do not make us feel good and comfortable. I hate when he does that! In today’s
gospel, Jesus is suggesting that more than membership is required in following him. It's about choosing the "narrow gate." One
thing we know is that the person asking the question in today’s gospel probably was part of Jesus’ “in-group” and therefore
thought he/she was saved. He/she was probably one of those people you always saw in the synagogue. In the pagan world in
which Jesus lived a devout person could think that they, and not the pagans, were on the right path, entitled to a well-deserved
place in the kingdom of God. After all, they took time in their busy schedule to come out to hear Jesus.
So, it seems that an "insider" is asking about who will get in and who will find the doors locked on them. From the way the
question is asked you get the impression the questioner feels he/she will have access. That's scary, because Jesus once said, "Not
everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of God.”
Well, Jesus' response should make us "regulars," we church folk, a bit uncomfortable. Jesus called all to faithful disciple-
ship. But his response doesn't indicate he is speaking to such a disciple. Most likely it was someone who felt part of Jesus' inner
circle; feeling he or she had made it, but others would not. This person probably felt “entitled” to heaven – a bad thing.
Jesus had a habit of telling religious people not to get smug. He was most critical of the judgmental religious leaders who
were the very ones to condemn him.
So, one thing seems crystal clear. Just belonging to a parish is not going to get us into heaven. Just going to mass is not going
to get us into heaven. Just saying a bunch of prayers is not going to get us into heaven. More than membership is required in fol-
lowing Jesus. It's about choosing the "narrow gate." All our good works and the nice things we do are not going to get us into
heaven either. We only get there through the – narrow gate – the saving act of Jesus. All of us, rich or poor, saint or sinner, young
or old have to depend on God’s mercy. God’s grace is sufficient. That’s all we need.
However, God’s grace should lead us to becoming more active in our parish. As the summer draws to an end I would like to
invite those who perhaps only attend mass to become more involved in the parish. There are many ministries, prayer groups and
other activities that you can join. Just take a bulletin with you when you leave!
FYI. I will be away from September 9 – September 28 attending the General Chapter of the Carmelites in Rome. During this
time, Fr Chris Iannizzotto, O.Carm. will be here to cover the parish. He of course is familiar with what goes on here and I am glad
he is able to come and cover the parish while I am gone. During the meeting in Rome we will be discussing and making some
changes to the Constitutions of our Order and electing new leadership. Please pray for the success of the Chapter. But, don’t pray
too much. I do not want to get elected to anything! LOL!
A veces desearía que Jesús se relajara un poco con sus palabras. Pero, aquí vamos de nuevo! Se nos presentan palabras de
Jesús en el evangelio de hoy que probablemente no nos hacen sentir bien y cómodos. Odio cuando hace eso! En el evangelio de
hoy, Jesús sugiere que se requiere más que ser miembro de un grupo para seguirlo. Se trata de elegir la "puerta estrecha". Una cosa
que sabemos es que la persona que hizo la pregunta en el evangelio de hoy probablemente era parte del "grupo" de Jesús y, por lo
tanto, pensó que se había salvado. Probablemente fue una de esas personas que siempre viste en la sinagoga. En el mundo pagano
en el que Jesús vivía, una persona devota podía pensar que ellos, y no los paganos, estaban en el camino correcto, con derecho a
un lugar bien merecido en el reino de Dios. Después de todo, se tomaron un tiempo en su apretada agenda para salir a escuchar a
Jesús.
Entonces, parece que una "persona enterada" está preguntando quién entrará y quién encontrará las puertas cerradas con lla-
ve. Por la forma en que se hace la pregunta, se tiene la impresión de que la persona haciendo la pregunta siente que tendrá acceso.
Eso da miedo, porque Jesús dijo una vez:"No todos los que me dicen 'Señor, Señor' entrarán en el reino de Dios".
Bueno, deberíamos estar "acostumbrados" a la respuesta de Jesús por ser gente de la iglesia, pero nos resulta un resulta un
poco incomodo. Jesús nos llamó a todos a ser fiel discipulado. Pero su respuesta no indica que está hablando con tal discípulo. Por
el contrario, esta hablando con alguien que se sintió parte de ese circulo intimo de Jesús; sintiendo que él o ella lo había logrado, y
que otros no. Esta persona seguramente se sintió "con derecho" al cielo. Esto es algo malo.
Jesús tenía la costumbre de decirle a las los religiosos que no se pusieran demasiado cómodos. Fue muy crítico con aquellos
líderes religiosos ignorantes los cuales fueron los mismos que lo condenaron.
Entonces, está muy claro. Solo pertenecer a una parroquia, ir a misa no nos llevará al cielo o montón de oraciones no nos lle-
vará al cielo. Seguir a Jesús implica mucho más. Se trata de elegir la "puerta estrecha". Todas nuestras buenas obras y las cosas
buenas que hacemos tampoco nos van a llevar al cielo. Solo llegamos a través de la - puerta estrecha - el acto salvador de Jesús.
Todos nosotros, ricos o pobres, santos o pecadores, jóvenes o viejos, tenemos que depender de la misericordia de Dios. La gracia
de Dios es suficiente. Eso es todo lo que necesitamos.
Sin embargo, la gracia de Dios debería llevarnos a ser más activos en nuestra parroquia. A medida que el verano llega a su
fin, me gustaría invitar a aquellos que tal vez solo asistan a misa para que se involucren más en la parroquia. Hay muchos ministe-
rios, grupos de oración y otras actividades a las que puede unirse. ¡Solo lleve un boletín cuando se vaya!
FYI. Estaré fuera del 9 al 28 de septiembre asistiendo al Capítulo General de los Carmelitas en Roma. Durante este tiempo, el
Padre Chris Iannizzotto, O.Carm. Estará aquí para cubrir la parroquia. Él, por supuesto, está familiarizado con lo que sucede aquí
y me alegro de que pueda venir y cubrir la parroquia mientras estoy fuera. Durante la reunión en Roma discutiremos y haremos
algunos cambios a las Constituciones de nuestra Orden y elegiremos un nuevo liderazgo. Ore por el éxito del Capítulo. Pero no
reces demasiado. ¡No quiero ser elegido para nada! LOL!

Reparaciones en el Gimnasio de la Escuela

A message from Fr Mike
We are in the process of getting rid of things that we no
longer need or cannot store. We ask all groups or individu-
als who have things stored in the meeting room or any
other parish room that is not in a cabinet designated for
your group to please get rid of it. At the end of August all
items that are not needed or placed in the proper cabinets
will be thrown out. Any questions regarding this please
see Kenia or Fr Mike.
