DACA

In recent weeks DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) has received much press from news reporters as well as Catholic Church leadership, which includes Cardinals and Bishops who made statements pertaining to this social concern. In short, DACA grants “Permission for unauthorized immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children to work and obtain an education in this country. To qualify they must have entered the country before the age of 16, have resided in it continuously since June 2007, and have committed no serious offenses and pose no threat to public safety.” Presently about 800,000 immigrants frequently referred to as “Dreamers” benefit from this program (22,000 recipients in New Jersey). Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archdiocese of Boston, com-mented on DACA in a September 1 speech stating, “While the current immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed, DACA though not the solution, is an important step in providing stability for those who benefit from the program…the young men and women and children currently protected by DACA are striving to be productive members of our society, they only want the opportunity to do so.” Cardinal O’Malley concluded by declaring, “The U.S. is indeed a great nation, and I know the contributions made by these young people protected by DACA will help keep it so in the future, so long as they are given the chance.” On September 5, 2017 The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops addressed this concern with the following obser-vations in hope that Congress would find a legislative solution that denounced the decision to terminate DACA. The Bishops ex-pressed the following: “The cancellation of the DACA program is reprehensible. It causes unnecessary fear for DACA youth and their families. These youth entered the U.S. as minors and often know America as their only home. The Catholic Church has long watched with pride and admiration as DACA youth live out their daily lives with hope and a determination to flourish and contribute to society; continuing to work and provide for families, continuing to serve in the military, and continuing to receive an education. Now, after months of anxiety and fear about their futures, these brave young people face deportation. This decision is unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as Americans.

The Church has recognized and proclaimed the need to welcome young people: ‘Whoever welcomes a child such as this for my sake welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes, not me, but him who sent me.’ (Mark 9:37). Today, our nation has done the opposite of how Scripture calls us to respond. It is a step back from the progress that we need to make as a country. To-day’s actions represent a heartbreaking moment in our history that shows the absence of mercy and good will, and a short-sighted vision for the future. DACA youth are woven into the fabric of our country and of our Church, and are, by every social and human measure, American youth. We strongly urge Congress to act and immediately resume work toward a legislative solution. We pledge our support to work on finding expeditious means of protection for DACA youth. As people of faith, we say to DACA youth – regard-less of your immigration status, you are children of God and welcome in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church supports you and will advocate for you.”

As people in a land who have bonded in the wake of two devastating hurricanes; so much generosity has flowed through

relief efforts, which include donations, time, and prayers in extending hurricane aid to those in need regardless of their status as U.S. citizens. Those suffering from these disasters welcomed relief from anyone without asking their legal status as a United States citi-zen, which demonstrates love for God and neighbor. In a statement on his papal flight from Columbia to the Vatican, Pope Francis took a clear position on the DACA situation in proclaiming, “Politicians who call themselves pro-life must be pro-family and not enact policies that divide families and rob young people of a future…uprooting young people from their families is not something that will bear fruit.” As Sunday morning’s scripture reading from the Book of Sirach addresses the question,” How do I live wisely?” The author calls all to discover the beauty of all lives through acts of mercy. This never takes away the ability to work, serve in the military, and gain an education.

In Christ’s love, Fr. Bob

With meetings and activities ready to begin, Youth Ministry can

etc. Donations can be marked “SPYM” and dropped off at the

parish offices at 41 Oliver Street. They are very much appreciat-

ed. Thanks in advance.

The devastation caused in the Texas/Louisiana region by Hurri-cane Harvey is staggering. It will take months and even years for people to recover from the storm. As always, our parishioners and those in the diocese want to help where their donations will do the most good. All parishes in the Diocese of Paterson will have a second collection the weekend of September 30 and October 1 to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. These funds will go directly to Catholic Charities USA. A network has been set up of all the Catholic Charities agencies in Texas, Louisiana and any other affected areas. If you would like to help those affected by Hurri-cane Harvey, there are two ways to donate: Drop a check in the collection basket the weekend of September 30 and October 1 or at the parish office. Envelopes are available at the church doors for your convenience. Please make checks payable to Saint Pat-rick Parish and write “Hurricane Donation” on the memo line. Credit Card donation may be made on our website. Thank you for your generous donations to help those in need.

Faith Formation classes start next weekend, September 24

and September 25. Catechists will email parents whose children

are assigned to their class this week. Please visit our website,

particularly the Parent Resources page under the Faith Formation

tab, for more details.
