PRAYER UPON ENTERING CHURCH Father, daily we entrust our safe keeping to others as we venture out
on the highway, as we eat food provided by total strangers, as we
take medicine that could bring about disastrous results rather than
healing. When we use time-saving power tools or electrical
gadgets we are at the mercy of modern inventions and other people,
the vast majority of them are complete strangers. We rely on these
animate and inanimate objects every day and yet, as believers, we
more fully rely on Your providence, Your knowledge, Your power and
goodness to care for us in dangerous settings. What reassurance we
garner as we realize that You are always watching
and caring for us. And when our time on this side has
expired You are there waiting to usher us to our eternal
abode where no danger lurks, no sins defile and no
sorrow awaits us. Praise be to Your holy name
forevermore. Amen.
WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN While we might consider ourselves relatively good the fact is we are naturally
opposed to God and His plan for our lives. This nature and the things we do
because of this nature result in “sin.” But God loves us and has overcome sin
for us. He did this by sending His Son, Jesus, to bridge the gap created by sin.
Now we are no longer separated from God because Jesus has brought us
back together: “God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not
counting their sins against them.” (II Corinthians 5: 19) The one who believes
this is a Christian.
REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION. Members of sister Lutheran congregations
are, of course, invited to join us at the Lord's Table. Others are requested to
consult with the Pastor before communing with us the first time. In this way
you will help us be responsible in our administration of the Sacrament – and
you, in turn, will be blessed as you commune with us.
NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with non-
alcohol wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or wish to
abstain from alcohol for personal reasons.
The Mission of Peace Lutheran Church is to equip and encourage Christ’s
followers to grow in faith, share their faith and live out their faith.

Prelude
Welcome, Announcements and Opening Prayer
Opening Hymn LSB 809 "Great is Thy Faithfulness"
1 Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not: Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be. Refrain
ref Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
2 Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Refrain
3 Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to
guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and
the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just,
will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
Confession and Absolution
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature
sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and
by what we have left undone. We have not loved You
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors
as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and
eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus
Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and
lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in
Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for
you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a
called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the
name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy
Spirit.
C Amen.

T SERVICE OF THE WORD T
Introit Ps. 107:1–2, 41– 42; antiphon: Ps. 107:8
P Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of men!
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble.
He raises up the needy out of affliction
and makes their families like flocks.
The upright see it and are glad,
and all wickedness shuts its mouth.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of men!
Kyrie
P In peace let us pray to the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us
pray to the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being
of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us
pray to the Lord.
5
C Lord, have mercy.
P For this holy house and for all who offer here their
worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
C Amen.
This is the Feast
6
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Let us pray.
Almighty and ever-living God, You have given
exceedingly great and precious promises to those who
trust in You. Grant us so firmly to believe in Your Son
Jesus that our faith may never be found wanting;
through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
C Amen.

Old Testament Reading 1 Kings 17: 8-16
8Then the word of the Lord came to him, 9“Arise, go to
Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there.
Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came
to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there
gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me
a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” 11And as she was
going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a
morsel of bread in your hand.” 12And she said, “As the Lord
your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of
flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering
a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself
and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13And Elijah said
to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first
make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and
afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14For
thus says the Lord the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not
be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day
that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” 15And she went
and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household
ate for many days. 16The jar of flour was not spent, neither
did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of
the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Epistle Hebrews 9: 24-28
24For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with
hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven
itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest
8
enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the
foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once
for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice
of himself. 27And just as it is appointed for man to die once,
and after that comes judgment, 28so Christ, having been
offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second
time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly
waiting for him.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Mark 12: 38-44
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the twelfth
chapter.
9
38 In his teaching [Jesus] said, “Beware of the scribes, who
like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the
marketplaces 39and have the best seats in the synagogues and the
places of honor at feasts, 40who devour widows’ houses
and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive
the greater condemnation.” 41And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the
people putting money into the offering box. Many rich
people put in large sums. 42And a poor widow came and
put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43And
he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say
to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who
are contributing to the offering box. 44For they all
contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her
poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live
on.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Hymn of the Day LSB 750" If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee"
1 If thou but trust in God to guide thee
And hope in Him through all thy ways,
He’ll give thee strength, whate’er betide thee,
And bear thee through the evil days.
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love
Builds on the rock that naught can move.
10
2 What can these anxious cares avail thee,
These never-ceasing moans and sighs?
What can it help if thou bewail thee
O’er each dark moment as it flies?
Our cross and trials do but press
The heavier for our bitterness.
3 Be patient and await His leisure
In cheerful hope, with heart content
To take whate’er thy Father’s pleasure
And His discerning love hath sent,
Nor doubt our inmost wants are known
To Him who chose us for His own.
4 God knows full well when times of gladness
Shall be the needful thing for thee.
When He has tried thy soul with sadness
And from all guile has found thee free,
He comes to thee all unaware
And makes thee own His loving care.
5 Nor think amid the fiery trial
That God hath cast thee off unheard,
That he whose hopes meet no denial
Must surely be of God preferred.
Time passes and much change doth bring
And sets a bound to ev’rything.
6 All are alike before the Highest;
’Tis easy for our God, we know,
To raise thee up, though low thou liest,
To make the rich man poor and low.
True wonders still by Him are wrought
Who setteth up and brings to naught.
11
7 Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
Perform thy duties faithfully,
And trust His Word; though undeserving,
Thou yet shalt find it true for thee.
God never yet forsook in need
The soul that trusted Him indeed.

Sermon "The Lord Will Provide"
1 Kings 17: 8-16
Stand
Apostles' Creed
C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.

heavenly Father in the name of His Son, asking Him to
grant every good gift to us and all in need.
P …. let us pray to the Lord,
C Lord, have mercy.
P All these things and whatever else You know us to
need, grant us, kind Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ,
Your beloved Son, who lives and reigns with You in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.
Lord's Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
13
Benediction
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious
to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you
peace.
C Amen.
Closing Hymn LSB 717 “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”
1 Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.
2 O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain,
O’er which our traffic runs amain
By mountain pass or valley low;
Wherever, Lord, Thy people go,
Protect them by Thy guarding hand
From ev’ry peril on the land.
3 O Spirit, whom the Father sent
To spread abroad the firmament;
O Wind of heaven, by Thy might
Save all who dare the eagle’s flight,
And keep them by Thy watchful care
From ev’ry peril in the air.
14
4 O Trinity of love and pow’r,
Our people shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe’er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad praise from air and land and sea.

Growing in Wisdom and
in Grace at GIP...
Crossing the Red Sea God's people did what God said and they left Egypt in a hurry. God sent a big cloud that showed the way to go. AT night, the cloud lit up with fire so the people could follow when it was dark. They camped out by the big sea. They heard rumbling. What's that sound? The bad king Pharaoh, his chariots, and soldiers were coming to capture God's people as prisoners. The people wondered how they would get away because the soldiers were behind them and the sea was in front of them. Moses told them, "Don't be afraid. God has promised to be with us. He will protect us and He will keep us safe." God told Moses to stretch out his walking stick over the water. Right away, a big wind began to blow. It blew all night and made a dry path through the water. Moses and God's people walked on the pathway to the other side. When Pharaoh and his army chased after them, God let the water splash together again on top of them. Everyone in Pharaohs army was washed away. God came to the rescue of His people! God's people were safe and happy. They danced and sang and played music, praising God for saving them. God helps His people in times of trouble. "Nothing will be impossible with God." SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY – 9:45 AM
STUDY OF THE BOOK OF I & 2 TIMOTHY; AND TITUS. THE PASTORAL EPISTLES ARE THREE LETTERS WRITTEN BY THE APOSTLE PAUL. THE PASTORAL EPISTLES
ARE 1 TIMOTHY, 2 TIMOTHY, AND TITUS. ALL THREE ARE LETTERS FROM AN OLD MAN AT THE CLOSE OF HIS
MINISTRY WHO IS CONCERNED FOR HIS SUCCESSORS IN THE PASTORATE. AS SUCH, THE LETTERS CONCERN
THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE CRUCIAL FOR THE YOUNG PASTORS TO UNDERSTAND—CHURCH
ORGANIZATION AND DISCIPLINE, INCLUDING SUCH MATTERS AS THE APPOINTMENT OF ELDERS AND
DEACONS, THE OPPOSITION OF REBELLIOUS MEMBERS OR FALSE TEACHERS, AND THE MAINTENANCE OF
DOCTRINAL PURITY. AS INSTRUCTIONAL LETTERS TO YOUNGER PASTORS, PAUL’S PASTORAL EPISTLES ARE
INVALUABLE TODAY. THESE LETTERS ARE FULL OF THE HEARTFELT WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS THAT
CHARACTERIZE PAUL’S MINISTRY, REVEALING HIS PASTOR’S HEART FOR THE CARE FOR THE CHURCHES HE
FOUNDED. THE PASTORAL EPISTLES ARE THE “HOW-TO” MANUAL FOR PASTORS IN ALL PLACES AND FOR
ALL TIME.
WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY – 6:30 PM STUDY OF THE BOOK OF JAMES.
WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY WILL RESUME AFTER THE HOLIDAYS ON JANUARY 9, 2019.FOR 8 WEEKS. OUR
DCE, TAYLOR STICHLER WILL BE COVERING THE BOOK OF JAMES. THE BOOK OF JAMES LOOKS A BIT LIKE THE OLD TESTAMENT BOOK OF PROVERBS DRESSED UP IN NEW
TESTAMENT CLOTHES. ITS CONSISTENT FOCUS ON PRACTICAL ACTION IN THE LIFE OF FAITH IS REMINISCENT
OF THE WISDOM LITERATURE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, ENCOURAGING GOD’S PEOPLE TO ACT LIKE GOD’S
PEOPLE. THE PAGES OF JAMES ARE FILLED WITH DIRECT COMMANDS TO PURSUE A LIFE OF HOLINESS. HE
MAKES NO EXCUSES FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT MEASURE UP. IN THE MIND OF THIS EARLY CHURCH LEADER,
CHRISTIANS EVIDENCE THEIR FAITH BY WALKING IN CERTAIN WAYS AND NOT OTHERS. FOR JAMES, A FAITH
THAT DOES NOT PRODUCE REAL LIFE CHANGE IS A FAITH THAT IS WORTHLESS (JAMES 2:17).
JOHN KNOX BIBLE STUDY – THURSDAYS - 10:00 AM STUDY OF I PETER & II PETER
OUR INHERITANCE THROUGH CHRIST IS IMPERISHABLE, UNDEFILED, AND UNFADING. IN 1 & 2 PETER, A MAN
OF FAITH AND FLAWS AND EYEWITNESS TO THE LIFE OF CHRIST CHALLENGES US TO LOOK BEYOND OUR
CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCES TO A FUTURE INHERITANCE. HE SHARES HIS CONCERNS ON BIG PICTURE ISSUES
FOR THE EARLY CHURCH, DESCRIBES BELIEVERS’ TRUE IDENTITY IN CHRIST, AND ULTIMATELY HELPS
READERS DISCOVER WHAT IT MEANS TO EXPERIENCE THE LIVING HOPE THEY HAVE IN CHRIST. KEY THEMES
OF HUMILITY, SUBMISSION, AND IDENTITY IN CHRIST GUIDE THE STUDY OF 1 & 2 PETER AS PARTICIPANTS
ARE CHALLENGED TO READ THE BOOK IN ITS ENTIRETY.
