Youngstown CROP Hunger Walk

For 50 years, average Americans have come together to fight hunger in exceptional ways through the CROP Hunger Walk. And again, in 2019, communities will come together to raise money and awareness for hunger relief locally and around the world. Roughly 800 CROP Hunger Walks happen every year in the United States. Walkers ask family, neighbors, colleagues and places of worship to pledge dollars for their participation in mile-long walks. Our steps symbolize the daily journey others must make for food and clean water.

The Youngstown CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, October 13. Registration and hunger awareness activities will take place 1 - 2pm on the lawn of Richard Brown UMC. The walk will begin at 2pm.

The walk will start at Richard Brown UMC, 1205 Elm St., Youngstown, OH. CROP Hunger Walk participants will have a choice of one of two routes: The 3-mile Crandall Park Out & Back or The 1-mile Wick Park Loop.

One-fourth of the funds raised stays in our community to support local hunger and poverty fighting programs. This year’s Walk will support the work of Protestant Family Service. The remaining money will be used by Church World Service to alleviate hunger in communities throughout the world.

In addition to assisting hungry families in our area, CROP Hunger Walks help families in the United States and around the world who are victims of disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and refugees fleeing war or famine. The Walk also supports development projects in the world’s poorest communities - agricultural training, health clinics, micro-businesses, schools, and fresh water wells.

CROP Hunger Walks are community events involving everyone who wants to fight hunger around the block and around the world. Our Walk encourages teams and individuals from public and private schools, civic and cultural groups, area businesses and all faith groups.

Being a family-friendly event, we encourage our Walkers to bring their four-legged members (leashes are required, water bowls, waste bags will be available on the lawn and on both routes).

There is NO FEE to participate. All donations are helpful, but each walker is encouraged to raise $100 or more.

For more information, contact Becky Gifford, Event Coordinator, Youngstown CROP Hunger Walk, at [email protected]

COS GREAT HALL ENTRANCE DRIVE THRU ONLY

Dear Parishioners,

Last September, the Lowry-Miller families of Saint Edward’s Parish, suffered a tremendous loss when their son Michael lost his battle to drug addiction after a long period of sobriety. In his sobriety, Michael’s thoughts were never far from those who were still suffering the imprisonment of addiction. He worked to bring them clothing and essentials and provide a beacon of hope that they might one day find sobriety as well.

In honor of Michael, and all those who have lost their battle to addiction, the Lowry-Miller family has commissioned Canadian Master Sculptor, Timothy Schmalz, creator of “Homeless Jesus”, to make, “When I Was Naked”, for installation on the first anniversary of Michael’s death. We invite all who want to honor their loved ones to come and be a part of this special dedication on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio. We look forward to joining our families with yours in thanks and appreciation to God for this sculpture, that we hope will serve to bring us all to a kinder and more compassionate world.

Donations of non-perishable food items will be accepted to give to those in need.

Married Couples Weekend: Do you wish you could talk to your spouse with a deeper level of listening and understanding? In this busy day and age, there is a tendency for couples to lose touch with each other . Husbands and/or wives can get to the point where they don't think that they understand their spouse very well, or that their spouse understands them. This shortage of understanding leaves spouses feeling isolated and alone, vulnerable and anxious. On Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends, couples hear presentations, do exercises and reflections that help them to understand both themselves and their spouses better. A Fall Weekend is scheduled for: Oct 11-13 in Solon at the Homewood Suites Hotel and space is limited. Call 330-305-9963 or visit GreatMarriagesOhio.org to learn more.
