Volume 18 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 19, 2018

School Starts Monday

A sure sign summer is coming to an end is when our school opens for another academic year. The students arrive on Monday, August 20, 2018 and begin the year with a full day of school. With school starting up again, the Wednesday morning Mass changes from 7:30AM to 8:00AM. The change takes effect on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 with an opening Mass of the Holy Spirit and will continue throughout the school year. Please make a note of the change.

Why Do People Leave the Mass Early?

Don’t misunderstand, the following is not a chastisement of those individuals who leave Mass after they receive Communion. It is rather, an honest appraisal of the phenomenon which is not restricted to our parish but is observed in every parish. Some pastors who broach this subject do it in condemning terms, an approach I do not wish to follow. The purpose is to think about the issue and bring some light to it, by trying to better understand why someone is compelled to leave early. When the question is posed to ordinary parishioners who do not leave early, the responses are varied. Some are annoyed and contend those individuals are disrespectful to God and parishioners, others are annoyed that people cannot spend one hour a week in worship. Although some of those responses are worth listening to, they do not constructively advance the conversation. A fair evaluation should include human behavior which motivates a person to leave Mass early, but also the same behavior which leads people to leave other events early. For some, it is nothing more than habit. People have a habit of coming late to a lot of things. They know they come late but regardless of the event, the habit overrides, and the behavior is executed in coming late. For the most part, anyone can come on time if they want to; it only takes a little bit of planning. But habits are hard to break because they become automatic and without much thought. It seems logical the same happens with individuals leaving Mass early. Another habitual reason an individual may feel compelled to leave Mass early might be the thought of getting out of the parking lot before anyone else. During the week, many suffer and are frustrated with the congestion on our roads when they commute or try to get somewhere, and by gosh, they don’t want the same stress when they come to church. In other cases, there are scheduling conflicts on a certain day which might arise, compelling someone to leave Mass early. But truth be known, those conflicts are more the exception rather than the rule. Then there are the ongoing scheduling problems where a family or individual commit to something which conflicts with the time of the Mass or cuts into the time taken to celebrate the Mass. I guess you can’t be in two places at one time. Others leave church early because of the deficiency in their understanding of the Mass. What they believe is that the main purpose of going in the first place is to receive Communion, and once they have received it, the ending parts of the Mass are superfluous. In their minds the objective is reached, Communion received and now the person is free to go.

Possibly, the reason for leaving early stems from a behavior which is well documented as to why individuals stop going to church altogether. A good amount of studies has indicated one of the major reasons for the decline in church attendance in Christian churches across the world has to do with the superficial character of modern life. Studies have shown those who do not bond well with fellow parishioners are more likely to leave the parish or church altogether. Whatever the reason, people feel the need to leave Mass early and the reason(s) is rarely countered by an argument which may change their mind. Some in the past have tried to use a spiritual argument that goes something like this: “People should stay and show respect to the God they have just received sacramentally by fully participating in the liturgy all the way through to its conclusion.” It’s not that this reason isn’t true; it just seems not to resonate in the minds and hearts of those who leave early. So, let’s try another approach. All of us live in a world which is so chaotic, between our working lives to raising families, paying bills, taking care of loved ones, some who may be ill, and working on personal and family relationships. Each week, even those who call themselves retired have schedules which are far too busy. I can personally attest to the fact that the modern culture is way too busy. But on the flip side of the coin, there are very few things which can bring us life and peace. And the paramount activity which can bring life and peace to our hearts and souls is the liturgy. During the liturgy, we can metaphorically “shake the dust of the world off of our feet” for an hour. It is a respite from the hassles of the day and week, and for one hour we can truly be cared for by God in a real way. We can slow down and bask in the reality that the spiritual life with God is far superior to the frenetic world which we must live in each day. If a person can commit to some time to going to Mass, receiving peace and communion with God, why would any person want to rush it? For my part, I wish to be in the spiritual peace as long as possible along with my fellow believers. What’s the rush? What does five or ten minutes really do to your life? A lot, if you are receiving the life and peace of Christ. Fr. Tim

“Watch carefully then how you live,

not as foolish persons but as wise…”

(EPHESIANS 5:15)

A wise person recognizes that all we have and all we are comes from God. A wise person thanks God continually throughout the day for all His many blessings. A wise person realizes that God has blessed us for a reason and that He wants us to help Him build His kingdom of earth.

THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST

Some things about human nature don’t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast.

In today’s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel’s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural—and not coincidental—that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance.

It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the “Bread of Life” discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.

On behalf of the entire Prayer and Faith Committee, I wish to express my deepest and heartfelt, THANK YOU in helping to make our 13th Annual “Christmas in July” toy campaign another resounding success! It is your tremendous generosity that made it possible for us to put smiles on the faces of children and teens who are undergoing various treatments for cancer. You reached out and donated over 1,450 items and $375 in Cash and Gift Certificates, to benefit the children served by the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. This foundation brings blessings to over 9,300 children each month at 49 cancer facilities. Mrs. Colleen Kissel, founder of the organization was overwhelmed and very appreciative with our donation. Thank you, in particular to Fr. Tim, for giving us the opportunity to hold this toy campaign once again here at Divine Providence Parish. My sincerest THANK YOU to the Women of Providence Quilters Group for gifting us with 50 handmade quilts and blankets, to Mary Lenc for crocheting 110 baby hats and to Sue Sasso for crocheting 200 baby hats. Special thanks to Barb Cavanaugh, Babs Coloia, Carol Kubala, Diana Kuntz and Mary Gisch who helped to separate, count and pack all the toys. To Don & Lee Bence, Norbert & Carol Kubala and Diana & Allen Kuntz who took time out of their busy day to deliver the toys to the warehouse in Orland Park.

To ALL of YOU, thank you once again for showing a generous heart for children in need.

May God’s Blessings be yours in abundance. Prayer & Faith Committee, Eileen M. Gorski

Saint Bartholomew Feast Day ~ August 24

Patron of Butchers and Nervous Diseases

Besides being listed as an Apostle, Saint Bartholomew is not otherwise mentioned in the New Testament, at least not under the name Bartholomew: many ancient writers, and Catholic tradition have identified Bartholomew as Nathaniel in the Gospel of John (John 1:45-51, and 21:2). The Gospel passage read at Mass on the feast of Saint Bartholomew is precisely this passage from John (1:45-51) where Nathaniel is introduced to Jesus by his friend Phillip, and Jesus says of him "Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him (1:47)."

We are presented with the Apostle's character in this brief and beautiful dialogue with the Lord Jesus. He is a good Jew, honest and innocent, a just man, who devotes much time to quiet reflection and prayer - "under the fig tree (1:48)" - and has been awaiting the Messiah, the Holy One of God. At Jesus' mention that "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you (1:48)," Nathaniel responded "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel (1:49)!"

Being "a true child of Israel," Nathaniel was a man well-read in the Scriptures and knew what they said of the Messiah and where he would come from. This is why he is skeptical of Phillip's claim that Jesus is the Messiah, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth (1:46)?" But Nathaniel was lacking "duplicity" - that is, his heart was undivided, his intentions pure - his openness to reality was always ready to recognize and surrender to the truth when he encountered it. He remained open to his friend Phillip's invitation to "Come and see (1:46)."

In encountering Jesus and hearing His words, he found himself face to face with the Truth Himself, and, like John the Baptist's leap in his mother's womb at the Lord's presence, Nathaniel's words lept out of his own heart in a clear and simple confession of faith, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! In Nathaniel we have an example of the pure man who sees - recognizes - God when confronted by Him, and on seeing Him believes in Him, and upon believing in Him, follows Him.

Meditation Monday: Ma hew 19:16-22 Saint Bernard

Abbot and Doctor of the Church (Memorial)

If you wish to be perfect . . . (Ma hew 19:21)

Many children dream of being an Olympic athlete. But that dream can’t become a reality without a lot of hard work. Each day, the athlete has to wake up devoted to the exercise, diet, and mental training required to reach his or her Olympic dream. It requires an incredible amount of me, effort, and sacrifice—a single-minded dedica on to do what it takes to meet the goal. If qualifying for the Olympics requires such a commitment, how much more do our spiritual lives?

The rich young man in today’s reading wants to know what he needs to do to make it to heaven. But when Jesus speaks to him about single-minded devo on to God’s kingdom, he walks away dejectedly because he feels the sacrifice is too great. We know we can’t work our way into heaven. But we do need to be single-minded in following Jesus. What does this mean? The dic onary defines single-minded as “having one driving purpose or resolve.” Our purpose, our dream, is to be like Christ. And that requires resolve to focus our thoughts, words, and ac ons—even our rela onships and the way we spend our me—towards this ideal of becoming like Christ.

Each of us has a different path to get us to our goal of becoming like Christ. That means that each of us needs to develop our own “training program.” Of course, there are the obvious things: exercise (prayer and reading the Scriptures) and diet (receiving the sacraments). Other things might stem from what you know about your weaknesses or the gi s and virtues you’re trying to develop. Maybe when people around you are gossiping, you need to remove yourself from the situa on. Or maybe you strive to set aside some of your paycheck each month to give to charity.

It takes effort to deny ourselves, but the good news is that the more you do it, the easier it becomes. The closer you are to your goal, the more enthusiasm you’ll have to do what it takes to go even farther. So resolve to be single-minded for Jesus today. You might not be an Olympic hopeful, but you can think of today as the first day of your “training”!

“Jesus, you are the prize that I seek. Help me to be single-minded in following you.”

Dear Heavenly Father,

As our children return to school We look again to your eternal

faithfulness. Watch over our beloved ones.

Let your Spirit go before them to

prepare the way and open the doors that lead to your grace.

Guide them away from harm.

May your mighty Spirit defend them, equip them with discernment and strengthen them with confidence.

Let them be free to live and learn as children of God. Give us, dear Lord,

the wisdom and patience to know when to speak or be still as

their parents and caretakers.

Always remembering that they are yours from the beginning; their lives a loving gift to us from Almighty God.

We trust in you.

We depend upon you.

Care for your children Oh heavenly Father,

In the name of your Son, Jesus.

Amen
