S1E ACCREDITATIONS AND APPROVALS

S ource One Environmental (S1E), a specialist trenchless technology supplier, gained accreditations to ISO 9001

and 14001 from the beginning of July 2019. Previously, the company held joint accreditations with its sister company, Flexseal, as the two companies had shared premises until recently and were covered by the same inspections.

“Independent accreditations are an important cornerstone of our offering to our customers. They prove that we take seriously the quality of what we deliver.” commented S1E Operations Manager Russell Edwards. “For us, the accreditation process this time was straight forward as we have been working to the necessary standards for a long time, but having our own certification at our own premises demonstrates our continued commitment to these established quality management and environmental management systems.”

The ISO9001 certification relates to an organisation operating an effective quality management system, to a required standard. Similarly, the ISO14001 relates to the company’s environmental management processes.

Accreditation for both standards was carried out by independent assessors NQA, a global organisation with over 30 years’ experience. Assessment was conducted during June 2019, with certification awarded from the 1 July 2019.

Furthermore, the Brandenburger BB1.0 UV-cured liner system has gained independent, WRc approval, valid for 5 years from July 2019.

The system is stocked and distributed in the UK by Brandenburger partner S1E, that recently became the first ever distributor of these Brandenburger products. S1E Managing Director Glenn Cartledge stated: “The new WRc approval for this range provides proof to contractors and their end-user, asset management customers of the quality and consistency of this product. As with all WRc

approvals, the range was thoroughly tested against rigorous criteria, including mechanical characteristics testing to BS EN ISO 11296-4.” Tests included those for appearance, mechanical characteristics and quality control.

The BB1.0 range was developed by Brandenburger for smaller diameter pipes and covers diameters from DN150 to DN300. The pre-impregnated liners are cured by use of a UV light train travelling through the pipe after installation.

S1E stocks the full range, including the related glide foils and jeans. Next day delivery across mainland UK is offered as standard for these products, as it is for all of S1E’s stocked items. Website: www.s1e.co.uk

RIONED’S 46 FUSO CANTERS ‘GO WITH THE FLOW’

S trong demand from sewer and drain cleaning contractors for its latest jet/vac combination unit prompted specialist equipment manufacturer Rioned to follow-up on an initial order for 21

FUSO Canters with another for a further 25. Moving forward, the Dutch-owned company’s UK operation, which is based in Thetford, Norfolk,

anticipates purchasing some 40 chassis per year from East Anglia Dealer Orwell Truck & Van. All 7½ t Canter 7C18 models with Comfort day cabs, the trucks are powered by 3 litre common-

rail turbodiesels producing a range-topping 129 kW (175 hp) and up to 430 Nm of torque across a broad engine speed range. Fully-automated, dual-clutch DUONIC transmissions contribute to their impressive fuel-efficiency, while an engine brake is also fitted as standard.

Rioned chose the Canter for several reasons. Chief among these was the fact that in order to meet the latest emissions standards, the new RioCom 7½ t jet/vac combi relies on the vehicle’s Euro VI engine PTO (Power Take-off) to operate its jetting and vacuum pumps.

“We were previously using a competitor’s chassis and an auxiliary engine for this application.” recalled Rioned UK Sales Manager Mark Cox. “Although the new model is our first PTO drive unit, previous bespoke projects have utilised the Canter’s PTO with great success. We have always listened to our customers and, as a result, the 7½ t unit has evolved over time. With the 2019 model, we have produced a machine that offers more suction, more storage and a sleeker design, while its more powerful Euro VI engine means the Canter offers a better driving experience.”

He continued: “Payload capacity and reliability are also crucial in this industry. The Canter delivers on both counts. Its compact footprint is another key attribute for contractors that work in busy urban environments, where access can often be restricted. Indeed, the fact that our new machine complies with the requirements of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) means we are receiving a lot of interest from established and prospective customers who operate in London.”

Among these is Rochester-based Kent Drainage, a company with vehicles that spend most of their time in the capital. It purchased the prototype which Rioned presented at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show. “We were certainly impressed with the vehicle.” confirmed Director Tom Coe. “It is highly manoeuvrable and looks neat and tidy, yet is also very powerful for such a small unit.” The RioCom unit incorporates a Jurop pump with a suction capacity of 8,200 litres (1,800 gallons) per minute – nearly 50% up on previous combis – and 100 metres of high-pressure hose. Its 3,000 litre tank is partitioned to hold 2,000 litres of waste water and 1,000 litres of clean water for jetting.

Meanwhile, in response to recommended changes to the New Road and Street Works Act, Rioned has also included additional secure, shuttered storage space. “There is a requirement for contractors to carry more equipment when working on UK highways.” explained Mark Cox. “We have met this without adding to the overall weight,”

Non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) Stage V emissions regulations which require that relevant equipment must be registered, currently apply to all ‘Major Development Sites’ in Greater London. From September 2020 they will be extended to cover all sites. As Rioned’s new combi utilises the Canter’s engine PTO, it is automatically compliant.

Rioned UK is pre-building the new units at its production facility in The Netherlands, for sale from stock. Fourteen have been sold to customers since the launch in April and the company has

CAMBRIDGE WASTEWATER REHAB COMPLETE

T he McGowan Government, through the Water Corporation, has refurbished 4.4 kilometres of wastewater pipes in the Town of Cambridge, in the inner western suburbs of the Western

Australian capital city of Perth, to extend the life of this important infrastructure by at least 50 years. The A$3.4 million project to extend the life of the pipes by at least 50 years, which began in

March and finished early July, forms part of an ongoing programme to reline and refurbish wastewater pipes across the State. The work included wastewater pipe refurbished in Floreat, City Beach, Wembley and Wembley Downs.

The project involved trenchless technology as it minimises the impact on the community. The technology works by inserting a plastic strip liner (Spiral Liner) inside an existing wastewater pipe via access chambers that is then wound down the length of the pipe route. The wound plastic liner is then expanded to fit tightly within the walls of the existing pipe to provide a smooth finish.

This work helps prevent pipeline corrosion, reduce the likelihood of blockages and extend the life of this important infrastructure by at least five decades. Since 2015, around 60 km of wastewater pipeline across Western Australia has been refurbished through the programme.

Water Corporation safely treats wastewater from homes and businesses across the State through more than 16,000 km of wastewater mains.

The project was completed by Australian company Interflow and involved 40 local workers. Comments attributed to Water Minister Dave Kelly included: “I am pleased this important project to renew aging wastewater pipes in the Town of Cambridge, was completed on time and under budget. Relining old wastewater pipes is important to protect the local wastewater systems and the health of the community and environment. Trenchless technology was used to reline wastewater pipes where possible, to minimise the impact on the community by reducing the need for extensive excavation. I thank the community for its patience while Water Corporation carried out this essential work.” Website: www.watercorporation.com.au

VERMEER CORPORATION COMMEMORATES YEAR-ONE TORNADO RECOVERY EFFORTS

V ermeer Corporation recently held the ground-breaking for a monument

commemorating the buildings destroyed by an EF3 tornado in July 2018, while celebrating the strength of the Vermeer team and the growth and progress that is happening along the Vermeer Mile.

“The tornado was the greatest challenge Vermeer has ever faced. I am incredibly proud to say our team has turned it into an opportunity. Not only are we rebuilding what we had, but we are becoming stronger than ever before.” said President and CEO Jason Andringa.

With three new facilities underway at the Pella-based headquarters, Vermeer is investing heavily in the future.

The first facility scheduled to open in summer 2019 is a new engineering and R&D building named Shop 48. The name stems from Founder Gary Vermeer’s shop where his innovations came to life and led to the founding of Vermeer Corporation in 1948. With more than 100,000 square feet of space dedicated to building and testing new equipment, team members will begin to move into this space in August.

“We are very fortunate at Vermeer to have a 71-year history of innovation. Shop 48 will take our innovation and growth opportunities long into the future.” said President of Industrial Solutions Doug Hundt.

Plant 7 was formally announced on 12 July as the new facility being built where Plants 5 & 6 once stood. Nearly 500,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space will expand beyond the original manufacturing footprint that took up just less than 400,000 square feet of this area. The new facility will connect to the original Plant 7 that was damaged in the tornado but repaired in the months following. Together, they will take on the name Plant 7. Scheduled to be completed in Autumn 2020, this facility is being built to keep team members safe at every touchpoint on the job,

Mark Yanzo, National Sales Manager Trelleborg Pipe Repair, said: “We are excited to provide technology that enables reliable and efficient watertight trenchless repair in a variety of sewer and storm infrastructure applications. Our solutions will be on show at WEFTEC and experts on hand to answer questions, as well as discuss specific applications.”

The pipe repair solutions that will be on display at 2019 WEFTEC are perfectly designed to meet the challenges of complex lateral connection repairs:

The Trelleborg LCR-S system is an essential method and cost-saving tool to repair and permanently seal main/lateral interfaces and connections from the main line (DN 135 – DN 600) down into the lateral (DN 100 – DN 200)

The Trelleborg Main-to-House (MtH) system is a trenchless rehabilitation method for property drainage lines using cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining technology. It differs from the usual method of rehabilitation as it has a different lining direction, working from the main pipe to repair lateral connection pipes.

Drainpacker is a sectional or point repair method for all types of wastewater and sewer pipes. The system uses Trelleborg Silicate Resins and chemically resistant CRF+ glass fibre and has a tested service live of 50 plus years.

AIRCRAFT TAKE-OFFS ABOVE - TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION BELOW

D ubai International Airport is the hub of air traffic in the Persian Gulf with nearly 90

million international passengers handled each year. The operator is constantly investing in capacity expansion. As part of Dubai International Airport Expansion Phase 3, during ongoing flight operations a Herrenknecht microtunnelling machine (an AVND2400AB) safely and precisely excavated three 610, 765 and 825 meter long sections for a new stormwater drainage tunnel under the taxiway.

The absolutely safe and precise crossing under airport taxiways and runways is one of the supreme disciplines of mechanised tunnelling, especially when flight operations cannot be interrupted. Heave, settlement or other impairment of this highly sensitive infrastructure must be avoided at all costs. Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines in the hands of skilful tunnel builders are ideally equipped for this challenging task. The tunnelling crew from International Foundation Group, working for Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects under the project management of M.A. Kharafi & Sons, relied on Herrenknecht tunnelling technology to extend the stormwater drainage system at Dubai Airport. In March 2019, they celebrated the successful completion of the project. Using the pipe jacking method, an AVN machine, an AVND2400AB with a diameter of 3,025 mm) mastered the challenge of three drives of 610, 765 and 825 meter respectively under the taxiway. The result is a new drainage tunnel with a total length of 2,200 m, which increases the airport’s drainage capacity. At depths of 13 to 15 m, the microtunnelling machine crossed under the Terminal 2 taxiways while flight operations on the ground and in the air continued smoothly and safely. On the longest drive an average of 15 m of tunnel per day were excavated through soft soils with sandstone and siltstone. The drive remained exactly on course by precise process and control technology from VMT.

The new pipelines will efficiently collect and drain away rainwater, especially during heavy downpours, so it can no longer accumulate on the surface. This is crucial to maintaining smooth flight operations. With close to 90 million passengers per year, Dubai International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world.

In the past, Herrenknecht technology has successfully completed a number of challenging tunnel missions, such as crossing under airports. For 2001 saw the extension of the baggage handling system at Zurich’s Kloten Airport, a Herrenknecht Mixshield (diameter 6,280 mm) excavated a 2,400 m long tunnel under the airport grounds. In 2002, an EPB Shield (diameter 6,460 mm) tunnelled under the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport in the United States for the newly developed 18.6 km long light rail system. In Brazil, an AVN1500 constructed a 367 m long stormwater drainage tunnel under the runway at Goiânia Airport in 2015. In 2017, two EPB Shields (diameter 6,250 mm) completed two new tunnel tubes for passenger and baggage transport with a total length of 3,842 m under the runways at Moscow Airport Sheremetyevo in Russia. During the excavation of a 4,500 m long metro tunnel in Barcelona, in 2018 a taxiway at El Prat Airport was crossed under over a distance of 70 m with great success. Website: www.herrenknecht.com

F ibre-optic cables transfer data at the speed of light. For example, they can provide high-speed surfing

for the internet and can transmit telephone calls and TV programmes. In short, they provide the backbone of modern communication networks. With a significantly higher transmission rate (more data per time unit) and the insensitivity towards electrical and magnetic interference, glass-fibre cables, with their optical waveguides, are gradually taking over from the age of the copper cables. In numerous regions in Germany, the future of the fast data carriers has already begun and even in faraway Brazil, time has not stood still.

KNOW-HOW FOR THE FUTURE In the Brazilian metropolitan area of Campina, the municipal company SANASA – Sociedade de Abastecimento de Água e Saneamento S/A provides the inhabitants with, among other things, drinking water. SANASA not only provides the extraction and preparation of drinking water, but also constructs the relevant supply networks independently, carrying out maintenance and keeping the infrastructure in good shape. In doing so, the company applies the most modern technologies, especially for new construction and/or exchanging damaged drinking water pipes. In a town like Campina, where the residential areas are very closely occupied, they enjoy applying, with immense success, underground construction technology, which is economically and ecologically attractive and barely interferes the lively day-to-day life of a big city. With a pipeline network of several hundred kilometres, a large amount of knowledge and experience has been gathered. The SANASA bore crew installs hundreds of metres of pipes every year, using the HDD method with

various machines including GRUNDOMAT hammers, GRUNDOBURST pipe bursters, and GRUNDOTUGGER winches, all from TRACTO-TECHNIK and have become very experienced and proficient in this field. PREMIERE FOR THE TRAINEES The ever-present digitalisation is currently spreading through the city of Campina, which has, among other things, the conversion of the communication networks to fibre-optic cables, on its agenda. With the knowledge and experience gained over many years in the NODIG technology field, SANSA has got its nose in front, as the installation of fibre-optic cables with the underground installation method is absolutely essential. How did a training bore crew celebrate their premiere operation within the framework of their training programme? The crew installed HDPE protection pipes for a fibre-optic cable, which was also to be utilised for data transmission, with a recently purchased, new GRUNDOPIT PS60-MINI-bore rig on their own company’s land.

THE FIRST STEPS ARE MADE The installation ran smoothly and was completed very quickly. For a crossing beneath a tarred car park, a pilot bore was carried out from a starting pit over a length of 33 m, a 4 in (100 mm) diameter standard backreamer was utilised for the process of expanding the pilot bore and simultaneously pulling in the 63 mm diameter HDPE protection pipe (PN 10). For the bore progress in the sticky loamy soil and to stabilise the bore canal, a polymer rinse was applied at a ratio of 1:1000.

The training bore-crew from SANASA can be really proud of their first underground bore to install a fibre-optic cable and it definitely will not be their last one, as comprehensive fibre-optic networks, covering all areas, are in high demand in the age of digitalisation. BUCHAREST EGG-SHAPED GRP SEWER REHAB – HOW IT HAPPENED

T he sewer system of Romania’s capital Bucharest is between 25 and 100 years old. It was decided to renovate the system step by step in order to increase

its efficiency and reliability (see also Trenchless Works issue 154, June 2019 page 18 - link). One of the sections to be rehabilitated is particularly challenging: near the Parliament house and old town, where space and accessibility are limited. Conditions that called for a special approach – and the perfect solution was found with Amiblu. After thorough technical considerations, a contract was signed over the supply of 5,200 m egg-shaped non-circular GRP pipe profiles in a range of cross-sections. In just under two years, six out of seven sections of the aged sewer were successfully relined with Amiblu NC Line pipes – each with profiles of a different width (780 to 1,700 mm), height (1,200 to 2,550 mm), and wall thickness (14 to 24 mm). The seventh and last part is currently being supplied and should be installed by end of 2019. Another 63 m of circular Hobas GRP sewer pipes were also installed as a lining. Once finished, the rehabilitation project will improve environmental protection as well as the safety of Bucharest’s water and sewer system and reduce its overall operating costs considerably. Costin Berbecaru, Amiblu Sales Director for South-East Europe, talks here about the complexity of the project.

Q. Let us start at the very beginning: What’s the background of this project? Berbecaru: The sewer rehabilitation in Bucharest involves a number of stages and locations. In

April 2016, TAHAL and Bucharest City signed a contract for the implementation of different works. These include a shotcrete rehabilitation section, the sealing of joints, a microtunnelling installation of a new collector, and the rehabilitation using GRP relining over a length of almost 5 km. For this last section, TAHAL initially had a different pipe supplier in mind, but in the end we totally convinced them of the benefits of Amiblu GRP including an established brand and quality, best quality-price ratio, availability of our full knowhow and experience, and the flexibility with which we were able to adapt the pace of deliveries to their needs. The supply contract was signed in November 2016. The first order for half of the project was supplied in December 2017, the second in September 2018, and a 3rd and 4th order followed.

Q. Which preparatory work was done by Amiblu? Berbecaru: Our experts team performed several tests and FEM calculations, created reports and

procedures, in order to perfectly customise the non-circular profiles to the existing channel’s varying diameters and conditions. The pipes’ wall thickness, for example, was defined and calculated according to the project load using the 3R2014 and ISO 16611 method. The NC product offers an equal or even greater equal vertical deformation resistance compared to a SN 10,000 circular pipe of the same height.

Q. How were the pipes transported to the construction sites? Berbecaru: The pipes were delivered to the different locations right in the heart of Bucharest on

smaller trucks which were equipped with cranes. This way we could optimally adapt to the narrow streets and heavy traffic as well as the restricted possibilities for unloading and storing the pipes on site. Our Amiblu project teams are perfectly at ease with such challenging logistics and site conditions given that many trenchless projects are undertaken in urban areas.

Q. That is certainly a huge benefit! So, the pipes were then inserted into the old pipe? Berbecaru: Exactly. Both the NC profiles and circular pipes were lowered into the old brick sewer through a shaft with a crane or forklift and then either moved horizontally by a trolley or pulled with a steel rope by a crane from the opposite side. The single pipe segments of the same dimension were joined using bell-and-spigot joints with elastomeric gaskets with the

support of the working staff, who helped to perfectly adjust the position of the profiles. Differently shaped sections were connected via manholes, after centring and fixing the pipes by means of spacers of different materials. Depending on the weight, position, and dimension of the pipes, the necessary force of connection was provided either by forklift, hoist, or manual tools. The new pipes were then fixed inside the aged pipe with an innovative method of welding bolts and nuts into each pipe, on a minimum four and maximum eight points, which resulted in a strong connection between old and new pipe.

Q. Any notable implications of the installation works on traffic and

Bucharest’s inhabitants? Berbecaru: Nothing considerable, not even during grouting, which is the

installation phase that requires most machinery including a compressor, mortar truck, mortar pump, water tank, etc. and space. We completed 90% of grouting works at night-time so as not disturb the traffic.

Q. How about the remaining parts of this large rehabilitation initiative? Berbecaru: There is still a lot of work to be done and Amiblu has been involved from a very early

stage. Bucharest is currently preparing a documentation to access EU funds through the POIM programme (operational programme for large infrastructure). Another project is currently in preparation, which involves rehab measures with both circular and NC pipes of the sewer network in three districts: Cotroceni, Regina Maria, and Tineretului. After completion of this project, the client was very satisfied with our professional approach and interested in maintaining the partnership for further stages. Website: www.amiblu.com

INNOVATIVE APPROACH GETS TOP RESULTS IN GLADSTONE

T he combined Sewer and Storm Water Pipe Rehabilitation Project awarded to Interflow by

Gladstone City council, in Queensland, Australia, has been delivered with enhanced new innovations in trenchless technology.

The influx of new and innovative ideas has kept the up the rapid momentum in the evolution of trenchless technologies. Continuing to push the boundaries within this field, specialist in pipeline renewal solutions, Interflow, has developed a new liner which is one of the company’s most robust and adaptable solutions to-date.

The new liner has been specifically designed for installation through dips and bends in an underground asset. Interflow’s Project Engineer, Brett Elsum stated it is also a simple method for restoring the pipeline’s structural integrity and hydraulic capacity, as well as preventing unwanted infiltration and exfiltration.

Interflow’s Project Manager, Shaun Corrie, explained the impact this new technology is having on the project and for the client saying: “Given most of the lines are consecutive, we can actually wind through manholes and cut out the liner. This has resulted in much faster productivity in terms of installation, without compromising the overall quality. As a consequence, the project will be delivered approximately three weeks earlier than programmed.”

There are two types of liners used for this project. Both are installed by a mechanical process and do not require any curing, which means that the physical characteristics are unaltered during installation. Unlike soft liners that require curing, the is no risk of any chemical leaks that are harmful to the environment. Not only does this reduce the product’s carbon footprint and minimises community disruption, it also creates a safer working space for operators.

The company’s Head Foreman for this project, Justin Norton, emphasised the importance of enabling a safe environment for his crew. He said: “I take safety with utmost respect, so it becomes foremost and number one. You need to start right from the bottom, all the way through to having safety control measures in place that protect crews and public.”

The works carried out reflect Interflow’s vision of constantly pushing the status quo to meet and exceed expectations for key stakeholders.

“We are proud to be doing this work for this very important client and we are able to mobilise our crew promptly to meet their expectations.” said Interflow’s Business Development Manager, John Phillips. Website: www.interflow.com.au

RECORD BREAKING LARGE DIAMETER LIVE MAINS INSERTION NEAR BRISTOL

W ales & West Utilities along with its long term contracting partner, Morrison Utility Services (MUS) has been successfully working

on a highly innovative ‘Live’ Live Mains Insertion (LMI) project to replace approximately 4,200 m of 12 in (300 mm) diameter cast iron with 250 mm diameter P.E in Wickwar, Bristol, UK. The project included a record breaking insertion, for large diameter PE pipe, of 1,014 m or a total of 84 x 12 m long pipe sticks.

The Wickwar Road project was the first of its kind, worldwide, to be carried out using the LMI technique, developed by Steve Vick International, on larger diameter PE pipe and is part of Wales & West Utilities’ major 30 year gas mains replacement programme across Wales and the South West of England, which will provide a safe and dependable gas network for the future. The LMI technique is a safe, fast and efficient method of replacing old cast iron mains with new P.E. pipe, without interrupting customers’ gas supplies.

The idea of using the LMI technique for PE above 180 mm diameter, which comes in lengths rather than coils, was discussed a number of years ago and successful trials have since been undertaken. In order to approve this method, a proposal was taken to the Wales & West Utilities innovation committee and Paul Breakey, Project Leader discussed the feasibility with Steve Vick International. It was agreed in principle that LMI could be carried out on larger pipes. After a number of successful trials and completion of G23 documentation and deviation paperwork, Wales & West Utilities approved the system in late 2018.

Live Mains Insertion is similar to normal insertion of polyethylene pipe (PE) into an old cast iron main with one important difference. By using a special gland box and a live head on the PE, the old main is kept live throughout the insertion process and the new PE is gassed up to maintain supplies to customers.

Once insertion is complete, the main is kept live to supply customers with gas via the annular space until it is operationally convenient to transfer the services to the new PE main.

A further benefit of live mains insertion over dead is that only one excavation needs to be open during the insertion process, reducing traffic management requirements. Operators consider this a major consideration with the cost implications of the new Traffic Management Act.

With a scheduled completion deadline of December 2018, a twelve week schedule of works was drawn up which involved a one way fed live insert with an estimated ten insertions over 4.2 km. This averaged 350 m a week. The most ambitious of these insertions was a record breaking 1,014 m in one continuous length, which took just under three hours to insert using the Steve Vick large Pipe

Handler. The Steve Vick Large Pipe Handler range is available for PE diameters from 250 mm up to 1,200 mm. The complete laying of the pipe and abandonment for this section took a total of two weeks. Up until that point, the project team had inserted a maximum of 630 m in a single push.

The project involved pushing a 250 mm PE pipe inside a 12 in (300 mm) diameter CI main, leaving an annulus of 200 mm. The PE pipe had a ‘live head’ attached that was designed and manufactured by MUS sub-contractor Thompson Utilities and involved adapting a dome head using a specialised mesh gauze which was positioned inside the head to stop the rust, common in larger pipes, entering the PE pipe. Following the air pressure test, a calculated number of holes were drilled into the dome head to allow the gas from the network to flow into the 250 mm PE pipe. Careful calculations were then made on the flow of gas to ensure there was enough gas in the annular space to provide the consumers of Wickwar, a small village outside Chipping Sodbury, some 13 miles northeast of Bristol with an uninterrupted gas supply throughout the insertion process. In total 9 innovative tools were used, saving time, money and effort over conventional practices and improving safety and disruption. The tools included SVI Macaw Pipe Crackers, SVI Large Diameter Pipe Handler, Soil Picks, Profuse Peelable Pipe, System 1 Twin Bagtube, Crawler Cameras, PE flowstopping, As-laid Drawing Capture, Re-usable Supatees.

In total, cost savings of approximately £500,000 were made utilising LMI over Open Cut on this single project alone. Disruption was also reduced by 100 m per week, Open Cut would have taken 40 weeks to complete but LMI took just 11, allowing huge cost savings to be made.

Paul Breakey, Project Leader at Wales & West Utilities, commented: “The use of innovation on standard jobs can be a win-win for the customer, our contract partners, and us. Wickwar Road demonstrates how it pays to innovate, facilitating a safer, quicker, and less disruptive scheme while delivering value for money.”

The project was completed a week ahead of schedule on 14 December 2018. Onsite support and consumables were provided by Steve Vick International. Website: www.stevevick.com

REMOTE NOISE LOGGER TRIAL PINPOINTS 115 LEAKS

A technology trial involving installation of 295 Enigma3m remote correlating noise loggers in a water

distribution network in the State of Johor, Malaysia, has successfully cut net night flow by a third. Yoo Sun Chan, general manager, Primayer Sdn Bhd, and Roger Ironmonger, managing director, Primayer explain how the work was carried out.

The state of Johor in southern Malaysia is better known for its beaches and rainforest than its water infrastructure, but water supply company Ranhill SAJ, a subsidiary of Ranhill Holdings Berhad, has set a challenging target to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) to 5% by 2025.

In December 2018 NRW, loss through leaks, bursts and unauthorised connections, was 24% and a number of actions was set in motion. Firstly, smart district metered areas (DMAs) of the water distribution network were implemented, with five DMAs involved in the first phase.

UK leakage technology specialist Primayer was approached by Ranhill through Mimtech, the company’s authorised distributor for the southern region of Malaysia, and the Enigma3m advanced remote correlating noise loggers were deployed in a three-month trial throughout August, September and October 2018.

The aim of the first month of the project was to locate leaks from the correlations obtained from the Enigma3m loggers. During the second month leaks were repaired and further monitoring was carried out in the third month. The trial was carried on Bandar Putra B DMA in the state capital Johor Bahru, with a total pipeline length of 38.51 km and some 5,052 connections under investigation.

The leakage rate was determined by measuring the net night flow (NNF) and subtracting legitimate night flow from the minimum night flow. Prior to installation of Enigma3m NNF was 30.99 l/s and total daily flow rate was 6,200 m3/day.

During the implementation of the smart DMA programme, a total of 295 Enigma3m units were installed by the team from Ranhill Water Services. The Enigma3m loggers were installed at hydrant valves, air release valves and on exposed fittings along the pipeline. The distance between sites for Enigma3m units varied depending on whether the pipes were metal or polyethylene.

The Enigma3m loggers installed in Johor use GPRS communications to transmit daily noise data from leaks to remotely locate leaks in water distribution networks, a major step-up from traditional techniques which include the use of metal rods to listen for leaks from above ground. They are deployed in underground chambers and require no outlay on surface level equipment.

Deployment of multiple loggers means correlation can be performed, locating leak positions more accurately. Leak location results can be viewed on PrimeWeb, Primayer’s cloud-based data collection platform for water network pressure, flow and leak location monitoring.

PrimeWeb makes collection of real-time data possible, along with visual display of water network hydraulic data, leak alarms and correlated leak positions. Ranhill SAJ’s on-the-ground leakage crews were able to locate incidents using Google Maps and, together with street-view visualisation of leak positions, manage incidents efficiently and effectively.

A total of 115 leaks were found and repaired in Bandar Putra B DMA during the Enigma3m trial. Small leaks at hydrant valves and communication pipes were also located. After three months of Enigma3m installation, NNF was reduced by over a third to 20.08 l/s. This gives a saving of 705 m3/day water, with a total cost saving of approximately £3,050 (US$4,000) per month.

Zainudin Ngadiran, section head of the NRW control department of Ranhill SAJ Sdn Bhd, said, “A challenging target for leak reduction has been set by Ranhill SAJ and we are exploring technologies than can pinpoint leakage to help us reduce levels of non-revenue water rapidly. The trials with Primayer have shown that it is possible to deploy sensors that can precisely locate leaks, enabling our teams to carry out rapid repairs.” Ranhill SAJ serves a 3.1 million population and manages 22,175 km of pipes over an area of approximately 19,000 km2. The company intends to expand implementation of the Smart DMA concept across Johor state and some of the state’s most critical DMAs will be managed permanently with Enigma3m, depending on the age of infrastructure and site conditions. It is expected that more Enigma3m loggers will be required for the expanding programme. Website: www.primayer.com

THE MRS - A NEW GENERATION OF DRILLING FLUID RECYCLER

T obias Kock, site manager of Thomsen Bohrtechnik, which has

11 HDD units and is one of the largest contractors in Northern Germany said: “It seemed to us always too expensive, not really thought through and developed to the end. For years, we had kept our eyes open and tested a few systems. Therefore, we were one of the first to come to the recycling day of L-Team Baumaschinen in Lampertheim, Germany to have the new recycler presented to us in March 2017.” The medium-sized German company from Ranstadt in Upper Hesse has been a dealer, service and rental company for many years offering horizontal directional drilling rigs from the American manufacturer Ditch Witch. What is new is that the company now has its own presence as a supplier of recycling solutions with the MRS system.

On the left side of the recycler the shaker separates the raw material out of the drilling fluid (including leaves etc.). On the right side the system ejects fine cuttings out of the centrifuge, consisting of sand, gravel and clay.

Torsten Mickel, one of the two managing partners of L-Team Baumaschinen GmbH, recalled: “The site managers from Thomsen Bohrtechnik were excellently prepared. They had a lot of questions as if they were just waiting for us.”

Recycling of drilling fluids has become an increasingly important topic in horizontal directional drilling over the years. The desire for a higher process speed has come to the fore. The associated higher productivity would significantly reduce costs. In addition, the disposal of waste is subject to increasingly stricter regulations. Furthermore, landfill costs are rising, not to mention the long set-up times and difficult operation of conventional recycling plants. Recycling without residual sand allows for a ‘perpetual cycle’.

“We thought a lot about the design of the machine.” recalled Mickel. “We wanted to solve two problems for our customers. Solution number one: The substrate should be 100% sand-free after passing through the recycler. This is important because the mixture of bentonite-water for the drilling process can subsequently be 100% recycled. Sometimes conventional recyclers contain up to 1.5% sand in the recycled product. With this it may become almost no longer possible work with that. For high-frequency bentonite pumps, even the smallest sand content is devastating.”

Solution number two: In the course of this, the fluid density of the recycled fluid was also kept in mind. It is important, according to experts, to keep the fluid density as low as possible in order to keep the carrying capacity of the drilling fluid efficient. The charged fluid with a density of more than 1.4 g/cm3 (loading approximately 25%) is no longer capable of transporting cuttings and consequently not reusable. “With the help of our technology, a perpetual cycle is possible." explained Mickel proudly. With the conventional technology, the drilling fluid density increases with each pass because of the increased residual fine-sand content.

CONTROLLED OPERATION The first major use of Thomsen Bohrtechnik technology was almost perfect, the improvements over the conventional technology were enormous, as the satisfied customer reported. The first site of the plant was in Wohltorf, a municipality east of Hamburg. The task for the construction site team at Thomsen Bohrtechnik was to lay 3,115 m of PE pipe of diameter 315 mm (as a

protective conduct pipe) in sections of up to 270 m long. The pipes had to be laid in a clay-sand soil mixture. A typical and solvable task. “Delivery and setup went smoothly. The system was ready for immediate use.” praised Tobias Kock. “We drove the passed drilling fluid to the recycling plant using a suction truck. In addition to the recycler, we set up a container as a buffer storage tank with a capacity of around 30 m3 for the dirty drilling fluid supplied by the suction truck which fed the recycling plant.” The container filled with cuttings within 3 hours.

Through the use of the recycler and the elimination of the waiting time for the suction truck as well as the mixing of additional drilling fluid, the time of the individual reaming steps (350 mm and 450 mm diameter) as well as the pullback of the pipe could be significantly shortened. Furthermore and most importantly, “Dependency on a disposal company and its capacities was no longer there. We were able to work according to our own timing.” Kock said happily. With no waiting and therefore no downtime and reduction of bentonite demand, the water truck had to visit the site only rarely. Disposal costs were much lower and as a result some significant savings were achieved. The complete MRS system is built-in on a hook-lift loader container.

Overall, Mickel was very satisfied saying: “We have been able to make the market a very good offer with our MRS series (Modular Recycling System). Yet that was only the beginning. “We continue to develop further.”

By the end of the first year, the L-Team had sold the first machines, others have been added to the rental fleet. The need for highly sophisticated and easy-to-use recycling plants is large in Central Europe, Mickel estimates and is pleased, that the developmental courage by his partner Horst Laubach and himself has been rewarded. capacity spoil tank. MC & C’s workload is predominately based on

operations with NGN (Northern Gas Networks) on gas distribution works. The company is the first DSP (Direct Service Provider) within the NGN operation to invest in this type of equipment for its day-to-day works.

According to Ian Kent, Managing Director, with MC & C: “We are now looking to this sort of technology as we see the potential for increases in productivity and safety whilst offering significantly decreased potential for damage to existing buried plant such as cable strikes etc.”

The new unit offers significant capacity for reduced tipping times. This combined with the Tridem chassis also offers a degree of flexibility and manoeuvrability of the smaller DINO8 6x4 models offered by MTS.

This current investment in suction excavation technology has been seen as beneficial not only to the contracting company but also to the client. As such Mc & C is already considering a second unit for 2020.

MTS Suction Systems UK Ltd offers sales, service support and backup across the UK and Ireland. MTS is itself currently in the midst of ongoing investment with the recent introduction of additional support, sales and service staff both at the company headquarters and across its operational region. A DAY AT THE BEACH FOR A TRACKED-VAC

A recent adventure for Pier UK’s all-terrain Tracked Vac meant a trip to the beach down in Cornwall. However,

this was no holiday as a major operation, in conjunction with the Environmental Agency, was required and only the Tracked Vac could handle the site and get the job done.

The project was based on the beach with a fresh water lake to the left, the sea to the right and connecting the lake to the sea, a large pipe which allows rain water to be dispersed into the sea to prevent flooding in the town of Helston.

The task for Pier’s operators was to clear this pipe after it had been blocked with sand and stones, utilising the flexibility and manoeuvrability of the Tracked-Vac allowed the blockage to be cleared safely and effectively.

This was critical work due to the environmental impact flooding would cause. The job was completed in just 2 weeks, with the shifts programmed around tide times and changing water levels to ensure the job was kept on track.

Due to the location, the Tracked-Vac was positioned on a public beach which posed some potential environmental issues, thinking ahead, the unit was flushed out and had its standard oil replaced with biodegradable in case of a leak.

The Tracked-Vac is a brand new, unique, Vacuum Excavator, designed by Pier UK for use on rough and challenging terrain. The system’s unique tracked design allows it to access remote cross-country areas that would be impossible for wheeled trucks to navigate, which makes it the perfect solution for excavation work on buried services.

Taking innovative ideas to manufacturer MTS, a great level of detail was outlined in the design and then put into production, the Tracked-Vac was a 12-month project that was well worth the wait. Using the same fan design and suction hose diameter from the well-known Dino 3 System, the Tracked-Vac boasts all the quality features of our standard fleet along with bespoke features that make this Excavator a truly innovative addition to the market.

Pier UK boasts the largest fleet in the UK and Europe of Vacuum Excavators, the Tracked-Vac compliments its other range of models including the Standard 26T/32T models that make up the majority of the fleet and are the company’s most used machines across the country.

Pier UK also has the unique City-Sucker range of vehicles, which provide enormous power but in a compact, urban friendly design. Suitable for tight access sites or city centres, the smaller size vehicle has increased manoeuvrability whilst still offering a powerful solution in hard to reach areas.

Working alongside utility, civil engineering and construction companies, Pier is experienced in working on all types of sites, both in the public and private sector, always ensuring that it provides a service that has proven on-site safety benefits. Website: www.pier-uk.co.uk
