Vicky Nguyen (cont. from pg. 1).

“To my parents’ credit, they’ve always been extra support-ive,” said Nguyen. “That’s not true for my Asian American peers. A lot of them have had to overcome some backlash from their families.”

It wasn’t easy to reach her current position, which is based in San Jose. She enrolled at the University of San Francisco on an academic scholarship, major-ing in biology. She didn’t start think-ing about journalism until her sopho-more year. Then one day she had a talk with her friend Toan Lam, who also has become a news reporter.

“Toan started talking about the in-ternships he was doing. That sparked my interest,” said Nguyen. “If (he) can do it and he’s having so much fun, I should give it a shot.”

Soon afterwards, she scored her first news internship at CNN’s San Fran-cisco bureau.

“I was a terrible intern. I was so green, I had no idea what I was doing. I sat at the phone and received news tips,” said Nguyen. She also struggled with trying to manage school-work and the internship.

“I was still taking organic chemistry at the time. I still had one foot in biology. I don’t think I showed very much promise.”

At her next position, she found her voice.

“I worked for KPIX (the CBS local affili-ate) with Manny Ramos and Roz Plater. Roz allowed me to go on shoots with them and watch them as they put their stories together,” said Nguyen.

After graduating, Nguyen won a Kaiser Family Foundation fellowship in health reporting.

“I worked with John Fowler, who was and still is the health and science edi-tor at KTVU. I got to learn about health reporting, consumer reporting and general news reporting.”

Then reality hit. Nguyen’s first job offer was from a TV sta-tion in Sioux City, Iowa, and paid $18,500 a year, less than minimum wage. Finally, she got a better offer from Central Florida News 13 in Orlando, Fla.

“It paid $26,000 with a $1,500 moving bonus. I thought I had made it,” she said.

Nguyen worked as a “one-man band” in Florida, writing, shooting and editing stories by herself.

“I remember one story I did about the homecoming of a young girl who had been in a terrible car accident. I went back to the newsroom and (realized) my video light (had gone) blue. I had not properly white-balanced the camera. We had to spend a lot of time correcting it. When I finally got my story…on the reel, it was two hours after everyone else had.”

Nguyen also worked at TV stations in Phoenix and Reno before returning to the Bay Area. When she started work at KNTV, she said, “my family was relieved (that) I came back.”

In 2011 and again in 2012, Nguyen garnered four Emmy nominations. In 2011, she won in the category of “Feature News Report – Serious,” and in 2012, she won in the category of “On-Camera Talent – Reporting.”

Nguyen still visits Sonoma County, partly because her husband’s family

lives in Santa Rosa. She also comes up to the area to cover stories.

On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, she profiled a blind gentle-man who survived the terrorist attack by going down 79 flights of stairs at the World Trade Center with his guide dog.

“I was last in Santa Rosa in 2013 doing interviews with Ca-nine Companions for Independence. The story was about people who have pretended their pets are service animals,” said Nguyen.

She comes up to speak with Mansell’s students. “My career advice is, believe in yourself. I know that if you work really hard, there will be a place for you,” she said.

In journalism and in life, Nguyen said, she has worked hard to set herself apart.

“You are the only person who can be you. You have to believe that putting in the hard work will make the difference.”

Some of her best advice comes from one of her mentors, photographer and editor Sean Drummond. “He said that

when it comes to the people you interview, there’s no way you’re going to be able to remember all of them. But they’re going to remember you. It was basically his way of saying, ‘Be nice to people.’”

Nguyen said his words stay with her as she tries to expose wrongdoing and create change.

“I’ve always tried to be really compassionate, as a human being and a reporter,” she said. “You see people at some of the most difficult moments in their life. You have to remem-ber to be a human being first and a reporter second.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. KURT KRUGER.

The Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce held a breakfast honoring Outstanding Teachers and Administrators at the beginning of this school year. Among those receiving top recognition at the 29th annual event was Piner High School’s Kurt Kruger, who was instrumental in the creation of the planetarium and science research center which opened last year. Kruger shared the top high school teacher award with Social Science Teacher Art Horner, from Santa Rosa High. Kruger is shown here with fellow Piner teacher Sharon Stevens.

Piner’s STEM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) looks back at a productive year, being featured as a “KPIX Cool School” with its new Science Center and Observatory. It was also accepted into the “21st Century Learning Institute” by the Sonoma County Office of Education. Piner High now has its own 3D printer. Thanks to a grant Piner now has a 3D printer. The first item

p r o d u c e d /printer was a wrench. (See below

picturer.) It took about 20 minutes from warm up time to finish. PHS Student Justin Wedel set it all up and printed the first item. He got to take the wrench home. It’s believed that 10 years from now a large percentage of households will have their own 3D

$100,000

HELP PINER GET STADIUM LIGHTS! Piner is the only high school in the Santa Rosa School District without lights for their Football/Soccer field. After nine years of trying to raise funds locally for this project we are going to try and seek corporate sponsorships. We are also looking into the “GoFundMe” program. That program will help us reach out to the larger internet community to expedite our efforts to get the lights for our athletes.

ANYBODY RECOGNIZE THESE THREE AMIGOS?

Thank you to all those who have generously given additional donations beyond their annual Foundation Membership dues--they include Dale Solheim, Sylvia Guiliano Andreis, Wayne Rasmussen, Larry Schalich, Nancy Michaelson Celms, Betty Castino, Leslie Jenkins Conant, Rachel Daniel, Janet Barbaria, Kathy Trenchard, Carol Cake Sherwood, Marcia Thompson Richter, Jill Smith Thach, Craig Thompson and Margaret Hayne Nelson.

Thank you to Edna Gaddie and John Huntzinger for your separate donations in memory of retired Piner teacher and counselor Charles Juricich who passed away on October 31, 2014, of natural causes. Mr. Juricich was well respected for his dedication to his profession and liked for his great sense of humor. In addition to being a passionate teacher and fly fisherman, he loved opera and was a great story teller, said his wife Ursula Juricich.

He’s survived by his wife; his son, David; Daughter-in-law Lissa Juricich: and three grandchildren.

Thank you to Tony Walls, who has continued to make contributions to the Foundation, through P.G.&Es Corporate Foundation’s employee “Your Cause” program, to be used for the English Department.

All contributions large or small help to support the learning process for our Piner High students. We apologize in advance if we inadvertently left your name off the Foundation membership or donation list.

You early Piner graduates may not recognize the guy in the middle, Dr. Rick Mordecai who graduated from Santa Rosa High in 1971, but who wouldn’t recognize two of Piner’s most prestigious teachers and coaches, Mr. Izzy Derkos on the left and Mr. Jim Underhill on the right. Mr. Derkos taught & coached at Piner the first several years it was open, but was then recruited to coach and teach at Santa Rosa Junior College. He just recently retirement from there two years ago. Rumor has it this picture was taken last summer when these guys were celebrating Jim Underhill’s 80th birthday. We should all be as lucky to look and be as healthy as these two. Their secret is eating right and exercising regularly, along with having positive attitudes and supportive spouses. They are both still actively training young people part time in Sonoma County. And they will tell you it’s never too late to make changes in your health. Thank you Mr. Derkos and Mr. Underhill for your outstanding contributions to the youth in Sonoma County for so many years; not only through your professional careers, but also your many years in your off time volunteering to help us become better athletes and people.

BIG THANK YOU’S

Sierra Sanchez is only the 3rd lady golfer in Piner’s history to qualify for the North Coast Section Playoffs, when she qualified this Fall.

Because people enjoy the food, the fun atmosphere, and incredible dessert auction, they generally return year after year. It is again expected to sell out so get your tickets early. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at G&G Market’s Customer Service Window, or mail you check to the Piner Hall of Fame (see page 2).

Dinner includes appetizers, salad, fresh bread, pasta and crab; topped off with dessert, coffee or tea. Melted butter is also provided. Our dessert auction offers delicious home-made or pro¬fessional desserts. This fundraiser helps support three non-profits; the Piner Booster’s, the Piner Foundation, and the Piner Hall of Fame. Don’t wait, set the date-- with friends, relatives, or co-workers for an enjoyable evening out, while helping the students at Piner High.

Congratulations to the 2014 Piner Varsity Boys Cross Country team for winning their 5th consecutive SCL Championship! Coach Luis Rosales has done an outstanding job since becoming Piner’s Cross Country and Track Coach. He reminds us of the many years Coach Jim Underhill produced numerous Cross Country and Track League Championships at Piner.
