With the soloist, who are all experts in Baroque vocal music, the chamber choir Ex Tempore, also specialized in music of the 17th and 18th century, and La Petite Bande, an outstanding orchestra for early music, Sigiswald Kuijken has high professional musicians to perform two of the most remarkable vocal works by J.S. Bach and his most famous son: The two-part cantata “Ascension Oratorio” has its origin in an elder secular work and includes some arias which occur again in the b Minor mess. The thematical related oratorio by C.P.E. Bach, originated 40 years later, is an important masterpiece of the genre and tells with multifaceted musical colours the story of the Ascension of the Christ.

PUCCINI: MANON LESCAUTOpera in four acts by Giacomo Puccini after Histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut des Abbé Prévost

Berliner Philharmoniker • Sir Simon Rattle conductor Philharmonia Choir Vienna • Richard Eyre direction Robert Howell stageEva-Maria Westbroek Manon Lescaut • Lester Lnych Lescaut • Massimo Giordano Chevalier Renato Des Grieux • Liang Li Geronte de Ravoir • Bogdan Mihai Edmond • Reinhard Dorn Innkeeper • Magdalena Kožená Singer Kresimir Spicer Dancing Master • Arthur Espiritu Lamplighter • Johannes Kammler Sergeant

The fact that the Berliner Philharmoniker turn to Puccini – this beloved yet ostracized composer – is symbolic. Here is someone who was thought to be outmoded for a long time, but there is really so much more to be discovered about him and his work. “Manon Lescaut”, the tale of one who becomes a model but remains a girl, is very contemporary.

NELSON CONDUCTS BACH’S SAINT MATTHEW PASSION (Matthäus Passion) Werner Güra (The Evangelist) tenor • Stephen Morscheck (Jesus) bass Lucy Crowe soprano • Christine Rice mezzo-soprano • Nicolas Phan tenor Matthew Brook bassThis work recounts the story of the capture and crucifixion of Christ, using the words of the Holy Scriptures, often interrupted by the poetic interjections of the chorus – dramatic, lyrical and contemplative. The emotional variety and intensity are correspondingly greater. Because of the magnitude of work which contains no fewer than 68 musical numbers and requires almost five hours to perform, JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion is a unique depiction of the suffering and death of Christ. BUXTEHUDE: MEMBRA JESU NOSTRICycle of Seven Sacred Cantatas BuxWV 75

Andreas Scholl counter-tenor Schola Cantorum Basiliensis • René Jacobs conductorDietrich Buxtehude (1637 - 1707), Danish organist and composer of church, chamber and organ music, was possibly the most influential composer of his time. Membra Jesu nostri, a title that defies elegant translation, is a cycle of seven cantatas, each a meditation on Christ on the Cross, his feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and face. The instrumental ensemble offer most subtle and colourful playing with lovingly sung interpretations from the soloists, including the renowned counter-tenor, Andreas Scholl, being impeccably clear and well balanced. The splendid direction from the talented René Jacobs gives impressive attention to detail which makes the performance so moving, suitably reverent and compelling. Buxtehude’s sacred music is at last starting to get the exposure that it rightly deserves.

BEETHOVEN: MISSA SOLEMNIS - CONCERT FOR THE REOPENING OF THE FRAUENKIRCHE, DRESDENCamilla Nylund soprano • Birgit Remmert alto • Christian Elsner tenor René Pape bass • Choir of the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden

With this festive concert the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden under the baton of Fabio Luisi celebrates the moving event of the re-opening of the Frauenkirche in Dresden. After the Bombing of Dresden on February 13, 1945, the church burnt out and its dome, called the “Stone Bell”, finally collapsed. The rebuilt church will remain a monument and a symbol of hope and conciliation, reminding people of its history. Beethoven’s overwhelming music blends impressively with the camera shots of the vast and impressive hall - a touching event of great solemnity. The cast of soloists is excellent including Camilla Nylund and René Pape, one the most outstanding singers of the younger generation.

HAYDN: THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF OUR SAVIOUR ON THE CROSSRecorded at its original location in Cadiz, the city that commissioned the work 1787

Le Concert des Nations • Jordi Savall conductorHaydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross was recognised throughout Europe as a masterpiece when it was premiered in the church of Santa Cueva, Cádiz. Haydn himself thought it was the best piece of music he ever wrote, and it established his fame in Europe and beyond. Paradoxically, the first version for orchestra, the most famous in Haydn’s era, is the least known today. This historic television recording is performed by Le Concert des Nations under the baton of Jordi Savall, one of Europe’s leading exponents of period music. The performance is enhanced by specially shot footage from the Holy Week processions which take place in Cádiz every Easter.
