    1. Read the following Proposal and answer the questions.

    Sample Program Proposal

"Under water Explorations" willbe a weekly, 30-minute studio production featuring guestssupplying their own video or film footage of their under water exploits around the world. The proposed host for the show is Dr. Steve Adams , who has an established track record with us and WCFX-TVfor doing marine specials . Each week he will have a new guest with newexperience s . Given the numerou s people within our seacoa st broadca st area who regularl y document their diving expeditions , we will have no trouble finding guests with exciting footage and stories to tell. In particular we want to feature in-studio close-ups of artifacts that have been salvaged

during under water expeditions . Initially, two guests who have documented the discover y of sunken ships are interested in appearing. In addition, we want to feature experts in marine life from the local univer sity who have dramatic and colorful digital footage of a wide variety of under water life forms . Dave's DiveShop and Marty's Marine Supply have tentatively committed as sponsor s . Numerous other potential sponsor s also exist within our broadca st area. Production costs would be minimal. The production could be done "live-on-tape" on Wedne sday evenings in Studio B with three camera s one typically reserved for tabletopclose-ups of exhibits . Dr. Adams indicates he would be willing to host/produce the show for $950 per program. Our initial contract with Dr. Adams would be for 13 shows. Although the guests would appear without compensation, the potential sponsor s have indicated that they would give the guests gifts in exchange for on-air acknowledgment s . The Sunda y afternoon broadca st time slot now occu pied by What In the World?, (which conclude s April 2nd,) seems most appropriate, although the final decision on this would be upto Programming. Initially, the show would be done in three blocks:Block #1 - Introduction of the guest; overview of the day's topic with a brief look at footage and exhibits. (about 7 min.)Commercial break. Block #2 -Discuss ion of the topic, primarily VO [voice over] concentrating on under water footage and in-studio close-ups of artifacts . Commercial break. Block #3 -Discuss ion and conclusion, again primarily VO concentrating on under water footage and in-studio close-ups of artifacts .

As commercial support increa sed we would have the option of going to four blocksseparated by three commercial breaks. Dr. Adams has alread y been contacted by WCFX-TVabout doing another special for them. If he hosted "Under water Explorations," we would obviously prefer him to be under exclusive contract with us for the duration of the series. He has agreed to wait 30-days for our decision on "Under water Explorations ."

    What is a script?

A script is a document that outlines every aural, visual, behavioral, and lingual elementrequired to film your TV news program.

How do I make a script?

Get your story straight . Come up with lots of ideas of what you want to happen in theTV news program. Create the premise and purpose of the TV show program.

Your reporters anf presenters will drive the action on the stage or screen, somake sure you make them interesting and innovative .

Create an outline or treatment . Before you begin actually writing dialogue and script, itmight help to create a basic roadmap of what will happen in your TV news program so youdont forget. Sketch out a general plan and envision how the news will unfold. This shouldbe told in the third-person.

Maintain your style . Remember, scripts are all about action and dialogue. Make sureyour characters speak realistically, and try not to mix styles of speech and vocabulary toomuch unless you are going for a certain effect.

Ensure that different reporters anf presenters have their own 'voice' based ontheir background, which will affect their word choices and dialect . This will stop your characters from blending into one another.

Set the news . Don't forget to include important details such as time of day, setting, andactions of the reporters and presenters in the scene. These are nearly as important asthe news that occurs.

Format your writing . Skip lines between one character speaking and a different onespeaking, especially if you're handwriting it. This will enable those reading the script todistinguish between speakers more easily, and also allow space for notes.

Edit yourself . Continually revise your writing, and, if possible, show the script to a friendor adviser who has writing experience and can critique and improve the script as needed. You may also write your script in various ways, introducing people and even in bracketstelling the reader what is happening that the narrator is not reading. What can you say about these free dining rooms?

Well, there are like 310 dining rooms working around the

city that attends a quantity of 670000 of kids. Also, every25 days, these rooms are open to offer a special mealfor the kids.

Last year, 19 kids died because malnutrition, this year only one kid has died, this is an amazing number.

Nice, also there is a nutrician that is helping with thedaily values of the snacks, currently they give 35% of theneeded calories in on day, the rest can be given in thelunch

They didnt get higher than this since 15years ago here is only the happiness of everybody for the health of our kids.

Thank you Londoo, what are the most specificallydata?

Well Calixto, in the program there were two vaccines theone of the pneumococcus was applied for around 22600kids and the other one, the vaccine of the rotavirus, wasapplied to 11000 kids; the value of both vaccines washigher than the 500000 pesos.

Wow, this is nice, but now we have to go to our lastnews, and is the one of food.

Ho, food its nice, yesterday I went to the T zone and thefood was nice, had you notice that in Bogota you coudfind any kind of food?

Exactly of that we were going to talk about, the food inBogota. Bogota is one of the cities with more variety of foods in the world, here you can find almost any kind of international food, going from Indian to Australian

But, what about quality, I can have a lot of restaurants,

also all of them can have lots of clients each day, like is American Airlines, but this doesnt matters that its qualityis good.

No, no, no, is the opposite, although tha quantity of restaurants, almost one for each block, the quality isperfect, excluding one to another case.

    And, what about the prices?

Prices? Prices are nice, although they are a littleexpensive for the point of view of Bogotan people, butcompared to other cities around the world is very cheap.

But, were do you find the restaurants?

Its easy, Bogota is organized in a way that restaurantscan be find in some specific zones, each one with itscharacteristics and type of chefs that cook on it.

Ho, this is nice, but what each zone has and how manyof them are?

Nice question. Bogota is divided is five zones. The mostpopular are the T and G. The T zone is located near the

Andino mall, it is the most expensive and therefore thebest, the best chefs work there; the G zone is located inUsaquen, a previous city that was absorbed by Bogota, there you can find a huge variety of restaurants withexelent quality, also the zone is very safe. The other three zones are the C, M, and U.

Nice, Bogotans should be proud of this!

Yes, but there is a little issue with this, with the time,Bogotans have been losing their identity, the dont eatthe cultural food, but more the one from other countries, the consumption of fast food has increased.

Ho, this makes me sad, but now we have to leave. It wasnice to be here with you.

This is the evaluation of my progress.

In class, we learned:How to make a script, the way the dialogue should be writeand the elements that need to be used like the lights, sounds, camera angle and other things that are important.__________

In my opinion, the most interesting thing I learned was:The vocabulary for the voices, the different types of actionsthat can be made like voice over and voice in off and other interesting things.___________________________________

I had difficulty with:Using the right vocabulary for the cameras and sound effectsat the beginning, because I had no knowledge of that, at theend I could finally use them.___________________________

I would like to learn more about:How professionals make their script, how they can imagine adialogue that seems so unpracticed, to make it be like a reallife dialogue._______________________________________

Comments:I liked this part because it was like the conclusion of all theprocess that was made, putting all what was made into thescript so it could be used._____________________________

    What is a stor yboard?

Once your script is written , the next step is to make a stor yboard. A stor yboard visually tellsthe TVnews program panel by panel, kind of like a comic book. Your stor yboard willshould conve y some of the following information:

y What charater s are in the frame, and how are they moving? y What are the character s saying to each other, if anything? y How much time has pass ed between the last frame of the stor yboard and the current

one? y Where the "camera " is in the scene? Close or far away? Is the camera moving?

Why make a stor yboard?Creating a stor yboard will help you plan your TVnews program out shot by shot. You can

make change s to your stor yboard before you start shooting, instead of changing your mind later. You will also be able to talk about your animation and show your stor yboard to other people to get feedback on your ideas .

How do Imake a stor yboard? Most commonly, stor yboard s are drawn in pen or pencil. If you don't like to draw you can also take photos , cut out pictures from magazine s , or use a computer to make your stor yboards. Keep in mind that your drawings don't have to be fancy! In fact, you want to spend just a fewminutes drawing each frame. Use basic shapes , stick figures, and simple background s . If you draw your stor yboard frames on index cards , you can rearrange them to move parts of the the stor y around.

Stor yboard Language CLOSE-UP SHOT: Aclose range of distance between the camera and the sub ject. DISSOVLE: Atransition between two shots, where one shot fades away and simultaneou slyanother shot fades in. FADE - Atransition from a shot to black where the image graduall y become s darker is a Fade Out; or from black where the image gradually become s brighter is a Fade In. HIGH CAMERA ANGLE: Acamera angle which looks down on its sub ject making it look small, weak or unimportant. JUMP CUT: Arapid, jerky transition from one frame to the next, either disrupting the flow of time or movement within a scene or making an abrupt transition from one scene to another. LEVEL CAMERA ANGLE: Acamera angle which is even with the sub ject; it may be used as a neutral shot. LONG SHOT: Along range of distance between the camera and the sub ject, often providing a broader range of the setting. LOW CAMERA ANGLE: Acamera angle which looks up at its sub ject; it makes the sub ject seem important and powerful. PAN: A stead y, sweeping movement from one point in a scene to another. POV (point of view shot): A shot which is under stood to be seen from the point of view of a character within the scene.
