Why do they have wings? And at what point did they become a key decorative feature in the most important churches of the Christian faith? The documentary The Angel Chron- icles shows how and why the meaning and the portrayal of angels has changed over time. Telling the story of angels since the demise of pagan Antiquity is also telling the story of humankind. In Christianity, angels are the main mediators between God and men. They are celestial beings who proclaim the word of God, guide people and help them to find their way back to the faith should they stray from the path. The angels are organized in a hierarchy, they embody the Divine Host, they pronounce and carry out His will. They are therefore of outstanding importance in the first large- scale artworks of fledgling Christianity, the Byzantine mosaics. Aſter all, it is they, the angels who represent the Heavenly Order. And there has to be order, as order is the symbol of perfection. The film is an enthralling and infor- mative voyage of discovery to many of the key spiritual sites in Christianity – to monasteries and cemeteries, churches and cathedrals. Starting SAT 24 Dec. 19:15 Fra Angelico “Annunciation” (c. 1430), Diocesan Museum Cortona DANCE THEATER Swan Lake Reloaded Frenetic breakdance meets classical dance – and toe-tapping rhythms are blended with the sound of a large orchestra. In the new production Swan Lake Reloaded – Tchaikovsky meets Streetdance, Swedish choreographer Fredrik Rydman has turned Tchaikovsky’s mas- terpiece into a modern street dance spectacle set in a red light district. Instead of taboos, sorcery and supernatural powers, the new production is cast in an urban setting in the modern era. The central theme is the insatiable greed for drugs and love. Swan Lake is the most performed ballet in the world. But Rydman is the first to turn the enchanted swans into drug-addicted sex workers. The choreographer has translated the classic material into a modern fairytale. Tchaikovsky’s music also gets a makeover, with the addition of hip-hop beats, electronic remixes and sampling. Starting SUN 25 Dec. 19:15 ARTS.21 From Tehran to Berlin It’s nothing short of a small sensation: For the first time ever, Iran’s legendary collection of modern art is leaving Tehran and coming to Europe. Estimated value: more than 2.7 billion euros! The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated while the Shah was in power. Farah Diba, the wife of the Shah, collected works by Picasso, Bacon, Warhol, Monet and Rothko. In 1979 came the Islamic Revolution: from one day to the next, the treasure trove disappeared into the catacombs. From December, the National Gallery in Berlin will be presenting the Tehran collection – outstanding contemporary pieces from Europe and the US, alongside significant examples of modern Iranian painting. CHECK-IN

Rendezvous with the Christkind “The Christkind invites you to His market, and whoever comes will be welcome!” These are the words traditionally spoken by the Christkind – with golden hair and dressed in a spar-kling gown – from the gallery of the illuminated Church of Our Lady – to open the Nurem-berg Christkindlesmarkt. It’s an invitation taken up by some two million visitors every year. The Nuremberg Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful and famous of its kind in the world. But why? What is it about this market that makes it so special? Gingerbread, brat-wurst and mulled wine? Or the mediaeval setting? Check-in travels to Nuremberg in search of answers to these questions – and for a rendezvous with the Christkind.

EUROMAXX

That was 2016! Twelve months of life and culture in Europe – a turbulent 2016 draws to a close. Whenever and wherever there were parties, celebrations and spectacles, Euromaxx reporters were on the scene. 2016 also saw trips to the European capitals of culture Wrocław and San Sebas-tián, but also to the big art event by Christo on Lake Iseo in Italy and the optical illusion cre-ated by French artist JR at the Louvre in Paris. There were also detailed reports on the open-ing of the Charlie Chaplin Museum and the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, as well as the extension of the Tate Modern in London. The magazine recalls these and many other highlights in its major end-of-year review in two parts.

World of Games Is eSport the new soccer? For some, the concept of “electronic sport” is a contra-diction in itself. But these days, several hundred million people all over the world are playing in leagues and competitions on their computers – for points and lucrative cash prizes. But what the professionals do to stay at the top of the rankings is now a world away from those who have an occa-sional flutter on the PC at work. These players call themselves ProGa-mers, the teams are called clans. They train for several hours a day, hold world cham-pionships. The prize money now runs far into the millions. But little notice is paid to eSport in the public domain, despite the fact that tens of thousands of specta-tors now attend eSport world champions-hips. People all over the world watch these events live online. The players contend with an enormous pressure to achieve. Experts say eSport could become as suc-cessful as soccer in the future: “In the course of the 19th century, we saw soccer develop from a player to a spectator sport, around which an entire economy has formed. And we’ve been able to ob-serve exactly the same development for eSport over the last 10 or 15 years.” DW broadcasts the documentary World of Games – The Rise of eSports.
