FUNNY WOMEN: Two of television’s funniest women will join forces in January to co-host the Golden Globe Awards.

Comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will share host-ing duties at the upcoming ceremony, making it a sig-nificant reunion for the former “Saturday Night Live” stars. It’s been a few years since they last worked together and this will be the first time either of them has hosted a major awards show. NBC will air the live broadcast of “The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards” on Sunday, Jan. 13, from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The women have honed this partnership over many years of working together. They co-hostedthe

Weekend Update segment of “SNL” for several years. While they were both still working on the sketch comedy series, they paired again on the big screen in 2004’s “Mean Girls.”

Fey left “SNL” two years later to create and star in “30 Rock,” but she returned to her former stomping grounds with a vengeance during the last race for the White House. Her famous parody of vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, with Poehler by her side impersonating Hillary Clinton, became a huge hit. Fey has since reprised the Palin role several times. Meanwhile, Poehler left “SNL” in 2008, but the women joined forces on the big screen again that same year in “Baby Mama.”

Needless to say, the pairing of Poehler and Fey is already a well-oiled comedy machine.

“Having both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on board to host this year’s festivities is a major coup,” said NBC’s Paul Telegdy. “Tina and Amy have a proven

chemistry and comedic tim-ing from their many years

together on ‘SNL’ to their successful co-starring roles in ‘Baby Mama.’”

The ceremony will be executive pro-duced by Allen Sha-piro, Orly Adelson and Barry Adelman

of Dick Clark Produc-tions.

SHAME AND SUBSTANCE:Bradley Whitford will soon bring a little class to “Shame-less.”

The renowned actor will guest star in two episodes of the upcoming season, which is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, Jan. 13. Showtime describes Whitford’s character, Abraham, as a “powerful, well-dressed, sophisticated gay man who is a political activist.” Needless to say, this will be an interesting character to con-trast against William H. Macy’s alcoholic patriarch, Frank Gal-lagher.

The unconventional drame-dy’s third season will begin five months down the road, with Frank waking up on the other side of the border, unable to recall how he got there. Back at home, Jimmy (played by Justin Chatwin) has moved in with the Gallaghers. At the same time, Fiona (Emmy Rossum) be-gins to contemplate her future and whether she should choose between her relationship and furthering her education. The other kids continue to test the boundaries of the house rules -- and Fiona’s patience.

Whitford is best known for his Emmy-winning role as Josh Lyman in “The West Wing.” Since it went off the air in 2006, he has starred in “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and “The Good Guys.” He’s also guest starred in “Monk,” “In Plain Sight,” “The Mentalist” and “Parks and Recreation.”

The classically trained the-ater actor has also done well on the silver screen over the years, too, though primar-ily in supporting roles. The ‘90s brought him parts in “Presumed Innocent” (1990), “Scent of a Woman” (1992), “Philadelphia” (1993), “The Client” (1994), “Billy Madison” (1995), “My Fellow Americans” (1996) and “Bicentennial Man” (1999). More recently, he’s appeared in “Bottle Shock” (2008) and “The Cabin in the Woods” (2011).

The new year will also see him return to the big screen as part of the ensemble cast of “CBGB.”

Q: We watched (and loved) a TV series last year called “Missing,” star-ring Ashley Judd as the mother of a son who was kidnapped. Do you know if that show was canceled, or will it be coming back on?

A: It’s Option A, unfortu-nately.

ABC officially pulled the plug on the show, which fea-tured film stars Ashley Judd and Sean Bean as husband-and-wife spies whose son is kidnapped (Bean appears mostly in flashbacks at first, as his character is supposed to be dead). The announce-ment came on May 11, a week before the airing of what was intended to be its first-season finale, but has now proved to be the series finale.

That episode at least gave fans some resolution to the very intricate plot that drove the first season. However, it ended in a cliffhanger that was supposed to launch the second one. Instead, it left fans hanging for good.

There’s a little bit of good news at least. In a seem-ingly confident move, just a week after the premiere, the producers announced a DVD boxed set of Season 1, which they released a few weeks after the finale.

Judd has, not surprisingly perhaps, landed on her feet, and is back to working on the big screen.

Q: I want to know if Bri-an Dennehy is still around. He was my favorite actor.

A: Brian Dennehy actu-ally hasn’t gone anywhere, though he does seem to be making less of a splash lately.

Whereas his square and stony-looking face, gravelly voice and grim demeanor once made him the go-to bad guy for action cinema, these days he’s settled into a qui-

etly prolific supporting-man career.

In fact, he’s appeared in at least a film a year -- usually three or more -- for the past decade, including last year’s screwball comedy “The Big Year” (a bit of a departure for him) and 2010’s “The Next Three Days,” a gritty crime story much more in the ac-tor’s usual style.

Most of his career has been on the big screen, but he recently took on a rare TV gig, appearing as a guest star in a recent installment of CBS’s dramatic hit “The Good Wife.”

Indeed, TV appears to have suited him. He recently com-mitted to a series dramatizing the story behind the 1986 Challenger-shuttle tragedy. The so-far-untitled project will also star William Hurt and is being produced by the Sci-ence Channel and BBC Films in the U.K.

He’s also continued doing theater at the same time as all of this, a longtime passion

of his, recently appearing in the award-winning run of the Eugene O’Neill play “The Ice-man Cometh” in Chicago.

Comedy is a tough business. Few comedians or comic

actors truly “make it” on their own steam, but once in a blue moon, a truly funny lady comes along.

Whitney Cummings has established herself as one such funny lady with a stand-up routine that’s landed her on “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” and “Chelsea Lately.”

Last fall, Cummings earned her way to the top of the TV food chain with her very own sitcom, “Whitney,” which finally returns to the airwaves Wednesday, Nov. 14, on NBC. The comedian stars in the title role as half of a forward-thinking couple that also includes Chris D’Elia as her beau, Alex.

This isn’t the performer’s first TV show. One of her first gigs after moving to L.A. was on MTV’s “Punk’d,” which she worked on in 2004. That was also the year she began performing stand-up. By 2007, she’d been deemed one of “Variety’s” 10 Comics to Watch and made Entertain-ment Weekly’s list of 12 Ris-ing Stars of Comedy in 2008. Interestingly, she appeared in NBC’s 2008 edition of “Last Comic Standing,” but didn’t make it through the showcase round.

In her new NBC show, Cum-mings proves that nothing is funnier than real life. Well, maybe her real life. “Whitney” is apparently a reflection of the comedian’s experiences, as well as her stand-up. The fictionalized Whitney is a photographer, while Alex has found success as an Internet entrepreneur.

As the inaugural sea-son played out, the series showcased the talents of an

ensemble cast that includes Rhea Seehorn as Whitney’s divorced friend, Roxanne, and Zoe Lister-Jones, as Lily, another of Whitney’s close pals. Dan O’Brien appears as Chicago police officer Mark Murphy, Alex’s ally.

While Seehorn, Lister-Jones and O’Brien are already tight, Tone Bell is new to the second season of the show. The up-and-coming performer won NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity program, an initiative to find talented comedians of diverse backgrounds. He’ll play RJ, a bartender at Whitney and Alex’s local haunt. “Whitney” has dropped Maulik Pancholy, who appeared in Season 1 as Lily’s ex, Neal.

In the first season, Whit-ney became concerned that her three-year romance with Alex could be headed for disaster, citing “relationship boredom.” By the time the season wrapped up at the end of March, Whitney and Alex were headed down the aisle after Alex’s drunken proposal. An expired driver’s license put a kink in their plan and they made a commitment in their own special way.

For fans wondering what happens next, “Whitney’s” second season was originally supposed to premiere earlier this fall, on Oct. 19, along with NBC’s “Community.” However, the network delayed the Season 2 debut less than two weeks before the sched-uled airdate, choosing instead to focus on the new series that were doing well. The move seems to have saved “Whitney” from a dreaded Friday night time slot, which can serve as the kiss of death for traditional sitcoms.

The sitcom is lucky to be alive as it is. It’s been a slow road to success for the come-dy. “Whitney” debuted as part of NBC’s legendary must-see

Thursday night comedy block last September, but moved to Wednesdays after the holidays. With more than six million viewers, the premiere showed promise, but “Whit-ney” was quickly panned by critics who denounced Cum-mings’ lack of acting skills. Viewership had dropped to four million by December, but experienced a slight bump in ratings when it debuted on Wednesdays in January.

NBC seems to be sticking with Wednesdays for now, which is bad news to fans of “Animal Practice,” which the network recently canceled. “Whitney” will take over the time slot left by the comedy about a vet and his monkey friend at a posh New York ani-mal hospital.

Despite a slow start, “Whitney” was renewed for a second season in May, which must have been a relief for Cummings, even though she’s got other projects in the works. She may be the face of NBC’s “Whitney,” but the co-median secured another net-work hit with CBS’s “2 Broke Girls,” which also premiered in September 2011. Cummings is the co-creator and executive producer of the comedy about two very different young women who start up a cup-cake business. Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs co-star in the sitcom, which Cummings co-

created with Michael Patrick King. “2 Broke Girls” has been outperforming “Whitney,” and even won a 2012 Emmy for outstanding art direction.

Both “Whitney” and “2 Broke Girls” were renewed for second seasons, so Cummings must be doing something right, despite naysayers. Hope-fully for her, she’ll avoid a sophomore jinx and bring NBC back to the frontlines of com-edy with “Whitney.” The Nov. 14 season opener features Jane Kaczmarek as Whitney’s mother Candi, who arrives just as Whitney and Alex are cel-ebrating their unofficial wed-ding day. Elsewhere, Roxanne and Lily argue over the perfect wedding present.

Who doesn’t like the idea of getting a second

chance?That’s what the Food Net-

work is offering to a few past contestants who came up short in their quest to win the coveted title of Iron Chef.

“The Next Iron Chef: Re-demption,” which is currently airing Sundays on the Food Network, is a limited-run series that brings back viewer favorites for another crack at landing the high-profile gig on another Food series, “Iron Chef America.”

Each week, the “Redemp-tion” competitors are put to the test in an effort to deter-mine which one of them is Kitchen Stadium-worthy. And to be sure, they’re put through their paces to see how these acclaimed chefs cope under the intense pressure and close

scrutiny they would have to endure during any “Iron Chef” challenge.

In a smart programming move, this latest installment proves to be both a reunion and an all-star version of the usual “Next Iron Chef” com-petition series. The initial field of returning hopefuls included: Nate Appleman, Amanda Fre-itag, Eric Greenspan, Jehangir Mehta, Elizabeth Falkner, Alex Guarnaschelli and Spike Mendelsohn. Tim Love (“Top Chef Masters”) and Marcel Vigneron (of “Top Chef” and

“Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen” fame) also signed on as first-time “Iron Chef” contestants.

A 10th contestant was added to the mix shortly before the premiere. Duskie Estes was the grand winner of the online competition “Road to Redemption,” on FoodNet-work.com, having defeated Lee Anne Wong to clinch the final spot in the televised competition.

“The Next Iron Chef: Redemption” is the fifth go at adding a new face to the “Iron Chef” roster. Michael Symon won the first competi-tion back in 2007, followed by Jose Garces in 2009, Marc Forgione in 2010 and Geoffrey Zakarian in last year’s “Super Chefs” edition.

with a fourth season in 2005. Now more than seven years later, the crudely contro-versial show is set to air its 200th episode on Sunday, Nov. 11.

While the show’s gener-ated more than its fair share of controversy, thanks to what’s often the adult nature of its content, even its harsh-est critics can’t deny the success of series creator Seth MacFarlane.

“Family Guy,” a topical comedy that’s embraced toe-ing (and, many would say, crossing) the line between what is and isn’t acceptable on prime-time TV, put Mac-Farlane’s name on the map. He’s certainly come a long way since his early years as an animator, when he was working for famous anima-tion studio Hanna-Barbera.

The success of “Fam-ily Guy” during and since its hiatus has made studio executives look again at MacFarlane -- and they like what they see. Since 1995, he’s launched two more suc-cessful animated comedies (“American Dad” and “The Cleveland Show”), co-wrote and directed a hit Hollywood movie (2012’s “Ted”) and has been signed on to host the 2012 Academy Awards.

Of course, the question on many minds is how a man best known for his crude and

following its third season. But instead of slipping away into the depths of time, the show exploded in popularity in syn-dication, and the DVD sets of all three seasons posted stag-gering sales numbers.

It’s no wonder, then, that “Family Guy” was resurrected

By Andrew WarrenTV Media

They say that everyone deserves a second chance,

but in the cutthroat world of prime-time television, more often than not it’s only the strong that survive.

Fox’s hit show “Family Guy” may well be the excep-tion to that longstanding rule. Originally premiering after the Super Bowl in January 1999, the animated sitcom about the dysfunctional Grif-fin family was yanked by the network due to low ratings

often raunchy humor will handle hosting all of the glitz and glamor of Hollywood’s biggest night. That being said, MacFarlane is no strang-er to the way things are done on the silver screen.

Many were unsure of what to expect when “Ted” arrived in theaters earlier this year. The film, starring Mark Wahl-berg (1997’s “Boogie Nights,” 2006’s “The Departed”) and his living, talking teddy bear (voiced by MacFarlane) was co-written, co-produced and directed by MacFarlane, a marked departure from his experience in TV animation. Perhaps unsurprisingly to his fans, the film drew glow-ing reviews from critics and shattered box office records, going on to become the high-est-grossing R-rated comedy of all time.

Meanwhile, back on the small screen, Fox has chris-tened Sunday nights “Anima-tion Domination.” They could be forgiven for renaming it “MacFarlane and Friends.” Of the five animated shows that the network airs on Sunday evenings, three of them are MacFarlane creations (the other two being “The Cleve-land Show” and “American Dad”).

“The Cleveland Show,” which got its start in 2009 and is currently in its fourth

season, is a direct spinoff of “Family Guy.” It follows the life of “Family Guy” patri-arch Peter Griffin’s neighbor, Cleveland Brown, as he set-tles into a new life after mov-ing back to his hometown and remarrying. “American Dad,” which centers on CIA Agent Stan Smith and his ec-centric family, is in its ninth season.

But “Family Guy” is still the big brother of the trio, drawing higher viewership ratings and greater cultural awareness than its younger siblings. As it gears up for its 200th episode on Nov. 11, it’s perhaps inevitable that comparisons will be drawn between it and the show that paved the way for prime-time animation. “The Simpsons,” which got its start all the way back in 1989 after three sea-sons as a series of shorts on “The Tracey Ullman Show”, aired its 500th episode earlier this year.

Whether or not “Family Guy” has the kind of stay-ing power needed to hit that milestone is anyone’s guess. One thing’s for sure, though -- with three popular TV shows, a box office hit under his belt and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sci-ences knocking on his door, MacFarlane sure isn’t going anywhere any time soon.be our friend.
