    Tutorial: Metal lon Complexation

Q1. Solid waste from mining operations (mine tailings) frequently contain various FeS(stminerals. In the present of bacteria, water will feach through the tailings to form a veryacidic l iquid stream containing Fe3* and SOat-. The l iquid stream is called acid minedrainage.

Determine the speciation of ferric iron and sulfur in acid mine drainage if the water is atpH 2 with Fet*, = 5 x 1O-3 M and Sr = 10-2 M.

Q2. Determine which metal forms a stronger complex with cyanide ion : Fe3* or Ni2*. For thispurpose, same amount of total Fe3* and Ni2* are added to a solution containing sometotal cyanide and, then cafculating the concentrations of the complexes formed.

    At pH 2,Fe1= Nir = 1x 1O-s M and CN1 = 1x 10-3 M, determine which cyanide complex isformed at the highest concentration.
