ThegoaloftheAssociationistopromoteandimprovetheteachingofthelanguage,literature,andcultureofItalian-speakingcountriesandgeo-culturalareas,aswellastoservetheinterestsofItalianeducatorsofalllevels.TheparticipationofallmembersoftheAATIisfundamentaltothecontinuedsuccessofourAssociationDuringmytenureasPresident,Ihaveworkedtoencouragefiscalresponsibilityamongstourmembers,inorderfortheAssociationtohavetheabilitytosupportitsmostvulnerablegroups(graduatestudentsandcontingent faculty). I canhonestlysay that,duringmymandate, thissupporthas increasedeveryyear.Together with the Executive Committee, this year in particular, we have worked to strengthen therelationship between AATI and its Chapters, K-12 andUniversity/Collegemembers. As such,we havemadechangestoourConstitutiontomakesurethatat least6K-12membersarepartof theECatanygiventime.OureffortstostrengthenthesetiesarealsoevidentinthecompositionoftheAATINationalItalianExamination,whichhasalsobeencompletelyre-designed.Finally, on behalf of the Association, I would like to thank the AATI Conference Chair and ProgramCommittee, Lyn Scolaro, Paul Colilli, Clorinda Donato, Justin Ehrenberg, Chiara Mariani and CaterinaZilianiformakingthisatrulysuccessfulAATIConference.SincethisismylastACTFLConferenceasPresidentofAATI,Iwanttotakethisopportunitytothankallmembers of the Executive Committee and the AATImembership at large for their support duringmypresidency. La promozione della lingua italiana, da sempre fiore all’occhiello delle attività della nostra rete diplomatica nel mondo e in particolare negli Stati Uniti d’America, oltre a costituire una proposta di studio di altissimo prestigio, contribuisce sempre di più al riconoscimento e apprezzamento della cultura italiana, delle sue raffinate eccellenze artistiche e architettoniche, della moda, della gastronomia, del design e del variegato panorama culturale.

Questo senso di orgoglio di tutto ciò che rappresenta il meglio della nostra bella Italia, si manifesta ogni anno attraverso la massiccia presenza e attiva partecipazione al convegno della American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) da parte della American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI), degli Enti Gestori, dei relatori, docenti, organizzatori e rappresentanti di università italiane, e con la gradita collaborazione del National Council for the Promotion of the Italian Language in American Schools (COPILAS), degli Istituti di Cultura, degli Uffici Scuola, del Consolato e dell’Ambasciata. La Fondazione N.O.I. (Nuovi Orizzonti Italiani), ente gestore per la promozione della lingua italiana negli Stati della Circoscrizione Consolare di Detroit (Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio e Tennessee), ha intrapreso, sin dal 1997, azioni e iniziative a favore della promozione della nostra lingua promuovendo corsi di aggiornamento e occasioni di incontri, provvedendo alla diffusione di informazioni su iniziative culturali e didattiche proposte dal nostro Ministero con l’offerta di corsi di formazione annuali, partecipando al programma AP ON-LINE sviluppato e offerto dal Consorzio ICoN in collaborazione con il Ministero degli Affari Esteri, programmando scambi tra scuole locali e scuole superiori di Perugia, Pescara e Cassino, predisponendo le pratiche di carattere didattico, logistico e legale per facilitare l’arrivo di un’insegnante dall’Italia che presterà servizio nelle scuole Bishop Watterson High School e St. Francis DeSales High School nello Stato dell’Ohio, secondo quanto previsto dal Progetto Pilota del MAECIe, e, infine, con fondi di provenienza locale, offrendo a tutti gli studenti il rimborso delle quote d’iscrizione all’esame AP a prescindere dal risultato dell’esame stesso. Grazie a queste iniziative e un monitoraggio costante e capillare dei programmi di lingua italiana, la diffusione dei nostri corsi si è assestata, nel 2016, su un’utenza di oltre 2.400 studenti, frequentanti 138 corsi integrati nel curriculum di 23 istituzioni scolastiche ripartite omogeneamente nelle tre fasce d’età nella scuola primaria, media e superiore con un aumento di oltre il 15% rispetto all’anno precedente del numero di studenti iscritti all’esame AP. Per far fronte alla carenza di personale abilitato all’insegnamento della lingua italiana nelle scuole d’obbligo locali, poi, la Fondazione N.O.I., in collaborazione con l’Osservatorio per la promozione della lingua italiana, il Consolato d’Italia a Detroit e l’Ufficio Scuola del Consolato Generale d’Italia a Chicago, ha facilitato la sottoscrizione di un Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) tra il Department of Education dello Stato del Michigan e il Consolato d’Italia a Detroit che permette ai docenti non abilitati, ma in possesso del diploma di laurea in Italia, di poter insegnare l’italiano nelle scuole pubbliche locali. Questo fondamentale accordo, che cercheremo di presentare agli altri Department of Education degli Stati della nostra Circoscrizione, rappresenta un considerevole traguardo per la promozione della nostra lingua. The promotion of the Italian language, forever a flagship, a crown jewel if you will, of the activities proposed by the Italian diplomatic network in the world and particularly in the Unites States, has served to foster, through the study of its melodic language and rich culture, the highest level of understanding and appreciation of what is considered by many as inherently Italian in its finest forms of arts, music, style, design and, of course, culinary.

This sense of pride manifests itself each time by the robust and active participation to the annual conference of the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) by renowned organizations such as the AATI (American Association of Teachers of Italian), the National Council for the Promotion of Italian in American Schools (COPILAS) as well as Enti Gestori, presenters, teachers and representatives of Italian universities; in addition to the welcomed cooperation of the Italian Cultural Institutes, the Education Offices, the Consulates and the Italian Embassy.

To that end and with the same sense of pride, the NOI (Nuovi Orizzonti Italiani) Foundation, an organization created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the sole purpose of promoting the study of the Italian language within the five states of Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee in the jurisdiction of the Consulate of Italy in Detroit, has, since 1997, proposed and implemented programs designed to increment the number of students enrolled in Italian classes within the regular curriculum of local US schools. Some of these programs and initiatives include: organizing yearly workshops and conferences held at local universities, securing funding for teachers to participate in the ON-LINE program offered by Consortium ICoN in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cooperating with schools’ administrators for the purpose of student exchange programs between local schools and schools in Perugia, Pescara and Cassino, securing books, educational materials and the necessary funds from local benefactors to offset the costs of registration to the AP exam by students enrolled in Italian courses as well as completing the legal requirements and securing the necessary funds for the expert services of a visiting teacher from Italy for the duration of one scholastic year.

Thanks to these programs and initiatives, NOI foundation is proud to report an increase of nearly 15% of students participating in the AP exam compared to the previous year and that, as of 2017, over 2,400 students attend 138 courses all being part of the regular curriculum of studies in 23 different elementary, middle and high schools.

Furthermore, recognizing the need for additional teachers certified in Italian language instruction, NOI foundation actively cooperated with the Osservatorio della Lingua Italiana di Detroit, the Education Office of Chicago, the Dante Alighieri of Michigan and the Consulate of Italy in Detroit to formalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Consulate of Italy and the State Department of Education in Lansing, Michigan which provides for teachers who are not certified in Michigan but have a university degree from Italy to be able to teach in local schools.
