Mike Woodard Alabama had a heck of a season. 12-0, a chance at the SEC Championship and even the National Championship. That’s some big stuff. Earlier this season I wrote, “We’re Baacck!” And, despite this loss to Florida, Bama’s still back folks. I’ll make another prediction right now...Florida will win the BCS National Champi- onship this year against Oklahoma and they’ll beat Oklahoma a lot worse than they beat Bama. The only team in the nation that could hang with Florida right now is Alabama. I’m not sure if the polls will show it, but Bama should be ranked #2 in the final standings. Oklahoma’s defense will let Florida through a lot more than Bama did, and Oklahoma’s offense has never seen defense like Florida’s. Bama might have pulled the Florida game off without a few key mistakes, both player and coaching. But that’s the way the cookie crumbled. Also, let no one take away the quality of talent Bama faced against Florida. Teebow is the real deal. He’s a top tier pro player ready for his last college engagement. Alabama was supposed to be in a building season...we were ranked 24th pre- season...remember? Now if Saban has another recruiting season like the last one 2009 will be another great year for Alabama football. Imagine two running backs of Coffee’s caliber. Imagine two receivers of Jones caliber. These things will be possible with Saban at the wheel. Bama fans should join in congratulating Sa- ban for earning the AP SEC Coach of the Year award. And how about freshman Julio Jones winning the AP SEC Freshman Of The Year award? Also Rashad Johnson and Andre Smith won AP ALL SEC player awards. Coffee, Cory...hey, we had lot’s of great players and lot’s of fun. It hurts to come so close and yet not get to play in the championship game. Bama fans just have to remember how many high quality teams there are out there, and that to be considered 2nd or 3rd of all the teams in the nation is not a rotten second prize. This especially in considera- tion of the past eight years. Bama played a team which I believe to be the best college team in the nation today, and was ahead starting the 4th quarter. I hope Florida goes on to win the National Championship. They will lend credence and pride to the SEC teams in doing so. The SEC is the toughest conference. I believe Alabama or Florida would win a game against Oklahoma. In a way we witnessed the national championship game in Atlanta. You saw the two best teams in the nation playing. The number one and number two teams were slugging it out in that game. Somebody had to win. That National Champion- ship game in January will prove to be an afterthought compared to the SEC Championship game. I look back on a long season of excellent and exciting games I was fortunate to witness...Ole Miss, LSU, and Florida which was hand to hand combat. And teams which typically would have given Bama fits were crushed...like Auburn, Ten- nessee, Georgia, and Arkansas. That was fun too. During the games this season I heard many fans, watching long drives, lot’s of smash mouth runs, occasional passes...clock eaten away six or seven minutes per drive...they’d say, “Now, that’s Alabama football”. And it was. This team was the kind of team we all remember and respect from the days of the Bear and Stallings. Goal line stands and holding other offenses on fourth and one. That was pretty common this season. That too is Alabama football. Forget the pain of losing, remember the pride of 12 wins. Bama won the birth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. We’ll face Utah January 2th, 2009. The Utes are 12-0, which sounds like a Bama team...but they are a 10.5 point underdog against Bama. They won’t be able to hang with Bama, but Utah will be a proud team. They should be win- ning 12-0. They deserve respect and admiration for this record. Bama is fortunate to have them to play in New Orleans. Look for Bama to use this game to attempt positioning itself as the clear #2 team, behind Florida, in the post season polls. SEC #1 & #2. -Mike Woodard Gary Smith, CEO of Power South, the elec- trical power company for southeast Alabama and the Florida panhandle see nuclear energy in our future. “People have gotten accustomed to air conditioners and televisions and they don’t want to go back”, he says. Gary is concerned that the new federal CAP programs, designed to reduce carbon emission, will increase power rates substantially in the coming years. “People don’t realize that the largest growth in power usage has been in a category we call “Other” and not the traditional ones of refrig- eration, washing and drying clothes and that type thing.” Gary says. The areas which have seen in- creased power usage the most have increased from 9% of power usage to 43%. Televisions, computers and monitors, and other various small appli- ances left plugged in. “If you replace every bulb in your house with a new low power us- age compact bulb, and then turn on a big screen television...you just in- creased your power usage despite the money you saved on the bulbs.” Gary said, adding that he still recommended people use low energy light bulbs. His point is that people don’t realize how little power they are using on light- ing and how much they are using on other things. Smith says people have been building larger homes which do re- quire more heating and cooling, despite efficiency gains in central systems. “The average home build in the 1970’s was 1500 square feet, today the aver- age home built is 2,450 square feet. That’ just going to take more energy to heat and cool and requires more power capacity by the energy companies. “There aren’t any easy fixes either. People talk about green energy, but there’s nothing out there than can compete with coal power for costs” Smith says. He cites Alabama slower wind speeds to debunk wind power, consistent cloud cover for debunking Alabama’s solar power potential, and low ground temperatures to great depths for Alabama’s potential geothermal power. “The only thing I can see that could work here is nuclear power as an alternative to coal.” Smith says. Smith warns that people should be careful about shutting down the coal industry in America too quickly. “I remember in 1970 all the scientists were saying we’re going into another ice age and were coming up with ideas on how to increase global temperatures” Smith said. “But the big factor is that China is not going to stop burning coal. Even if we stopped burning coal, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere will continue to climb due to China. We need to be careful not to make our industries uncompetitive against China by using very expensive energy while they use cheap coal en- ergy to power their plants.” Smith went on to say that Power South is invested, with Alabama Power, in building a new nuclear power plant for Alabama. “If you look at power generation, look to France. They got it right.” Smith said, referring to the fact that France produces 80% of it’s energy from nuclear power plants. Smith wasn’t too complimentary of T Boone Pickens wind and natural gas energy program, “Pickens plan is good for Pickens because he’s going to get rich, but the Pickens plan is bad for the rest of us because Pick- ens is going to get rich” Smith quipped. “If you’re going to worry about the environment or the econ- omy...I’d worry about the economy the most.” Smith said. BAMA SUGAR BOWL BOUND - Mike Woodard The Christmas parade in downtown Tuscaloosa was a hoot this year. Top left: the DARE program float, Top Right: the Blues Brothers performed, Bottom Right: Kidsville’s Truman the Dragon was a star, and Bottom Left: Mr. & Mrs. Santa Clause wrapped up the show. The parade was slowed and interrupted by a fire in the Chuck’s Fish restaurant on Greens- boro Ave downtown. Some of the kids enjoyed the firemen responding more than the parade itself I think! A great time was had by all who came. CHRISTMAS PARADE 08

EDITOR’S COMME TS…

TRIBUTE TO AN UNKNOWN FAN Sometimes there are reminders in life that things we think are im-portant aren’t so important at all. Alabama fans are disappointed at losing the SEC Championship game. It was our chance to go to the National Championship and to remain undefeated. It felt like a big thing. A big prize we could all win. But we must always remember to keep things in perspective. We should be very proud of our team for winning 12 in a row. For playing with class and character. Life is made of many things besides championships. My wife and I were glad to have tickets and be present at the SEC Championship game in Atlanta. We were hopeful Alabama would win. But what would happen there changed the experience in ways we could never have anticipated and never imagined. While others were preparing for the start of the game, a man on our row, about six seats down, started convulsing. Being a former registered nurse I went down to see if I could help. He immediately stopped moving altogether. I checked his pulse at his wrist and neck, but found no pulse. Someone in the stands had nitro, so we put a pill in his mouth. Two young men started CPR, taking turns as I continued to check for a pulse...with no luck. When they finally stopped to take a break, I heard that breath I’d heard in the hospitals where I had worked before. A dying mans final breath. His skin was cold and clammy, a slight sweat. Like an oil sweat that got on my hands. The young men continued CPR. We had immediately called for paramedics but it took them 15 minutes to get there. All this time the noise of the fans filled the stands, and as others cheered for victory, I watched a man die. Finally the paramedics arrived, if that’s what you could call them, seeming to have no clue as to what they were doing. After realizing they didn’t even have the basic medicines with them, like Eppy, they put an oxy-gen mask on him, like that would do any good, and carried him out on a board. I would have been very, very upset with those guys...but I knew he was already gone. A young lady there, not knowing this to be the case, yelled a lot at them. We sat with EKG adhesive strips about our seat for the rest of the game. The people on the rows above and below, and on our row, about eight people out on either side, who had sat near this man, did not cheer. We sat in silence for some time. An uneasiness on all faces. At the beginning of the game, which we had come to for entertain-ment, for pride of school and program, we had come face to face with death. I sat, wanting to watch the game, wanting to enjoy it...but wanting to go wash my hands so badly. I finally had to leave to wash my hands...I just couldn't take it anymore. I could still feel his clammy touch. A few tears, a few cheers. We lost the game...but that’s not what I will remember. It’s been a few days now and I’ve had time to think about it....and I like to think that this man died doing something that he loved, something that he wanted to do, something he really enjoyed doing. That, I think, would be a good way to go. Mike Woodard, Publisher Tuscaloosa Sun

1. For the crust, whisk the flour, sugar and salt together in a medium bowl. With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of the ice water over the flour mixture, tossing with a fork to moisten it evenly, then add more water about 1 teaspoon at a time until the dough comes together. Gather the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes.

2. Cut the dough in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one half (keep the remaining dough chilled) to a 12 1/2 round, and fit into a 9-inch pie plate.

3. Put the blackberries in a bowl and toss gently with the sugar and flour. Drizzle with lemon juice and toss gently again

4. Transfer the berries to the pie shell and dot with the butter. Roll the second piece of dough to an 11-inch round. Cover the filling with the dough, trim the excess dough, and crimp the edges with a fork to seal. Cut a few steam vents in the center of the crust. Bake at 350°oven for 1 hour, or until the crust is golden brown the juices are bubbling. Let cool on a rack at least 15 minutes.

For the Crust 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 3 Tbs sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup veggie shortening, chilled 5 tbs ice water

This recipe was in the Good Morning America show this week, it come from chef Mario Batali. I haven’t made it yet, but I love blackberries, so I’m sure I will. Although, I will probably use ready made crust, much less work and time.

Sleep. It refreshes, rejuvenates and restores. Though our bodies are, for the most part, quiet during sleep, there is actually a bustle of activity going on in-side us. Getting baby to sleep and having your baby on a regular sleep schedule is so important, that it is worth exploring and discussing. Not only is a proper and regular sleep schedule vitally important for your baby’s health, it also improves mood, function and physical development. Here are five major benefits that regu-lar and sound sleep offer your child: 1. It helps your baby grow strong and develop quick reactions and coordination: studies show that babies who get regular sleep have improved reaction time, better reflexes and even better use of oxygen. 2. It helps keep baby’s mood even and happy: obviously, babies get cranky and cry longer and more often when they are tired, and if they are sleep deprived, or on an irregular schedule, they can be very challenging to deal with. 3. It helps with memory function and development: Dr. Nilesh Dave, medical direc-tor of the Sleep Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center says "During sleep, your brain will process a lot and turn it into long-term memory," he says. "Memory is a function of what we think sleep does." 4. It keeps baby from falling asleep at times that are not part of the planned sched-ule: I’m sure every parent has experienced times when their baby fell asleep in the car, or while out somewhere, only to have the baby wake up irritable and still tired. If a baby is well rested, and if the parents plan their activities to accommodate baby’s established sleep schedule, then more often than not, the baby will stay awake in the car, etc, because it’s during the established non - sleep time. 5. It keeps baby’s hormones balanced: Our bodies use sleep to release certain hor-mones, Dr. Davé says, including those essential for growth and development. So, if sleep is so important, how do you ensure that your baby gets enough sleep? Getting baby to sleep does not have to be difficult. Here are some basics that might help: 1. Establish a bedtime routine: This helps your baby settle down, (and helps adults wind down after a long day as well). Allocate about thirty minutes before baby’s bedtime to soothe and relax your child. Read, sing or play lullabies, or just sit qui-etly in a rocking chair, holding your baby. 2. Only put your baby down when it’s time for sleep: Using the baby’s bed for any-thing other than sleep gives the child confusing messages about what the bed/ or bedtime really means. If it is clear to the baby that the bed is for sleeping, the chances of the baby settling down are better. 3. Make the baby’s bedroom dark, comfortable and quiet: limit distractions. 4. Don’t play actively with your baby before bedtime: this can over stimulate the baby and make it more difficult to calm down in time for the scheduled bedtime. 5. Stick with the schedule: babies very easily can get off schedule, and it can play havoc with their mood and with their health. 6. Calm and soothe yourself and your baby: take some deep breaths. Your baby will pick up on your own relaxed state and this will help you both get quiet and peace-ful. 7. Know when to seek help: talk to your baby’s pediatrician for more ideas for es-tablishing a regular sleep schedule for your baby. Getting baby to sleep and on a regular sleep schedule is important for the baby’s parents as well, for all of the above reasons. Everyone benefits from a regu-lar sleep schedule!

While it is natural to divest some irrepressible cravings during pregnancy, your baby does not justify all excesses. Pounds made during these nine months are sometimes difficult to lose... Watching your diet is essential. By following these recommendations you give yourself the chance of having the most beautiful 9 months of your life. Being pregnant produce many changes in the body. The nutritional needs have increased, to feed the baby future... but also the mother! Should you change your diet? In your body, the future baby eats the same things as you! It is therefore essential to avoid deficiencies. But the meals of the mother not only cover needs. They are the source of tastes of the fetus and may even influence the sex of the child! What products are at risk What is the influence of diet during pregnancy? It is important to provide baby everything it needs during these nine months, eating balanced and varied. But there are also foods to avoid during these nine months, if not they threaten the health of babies, starting with alcohol! Alcohol is certainly with tobacco the sworn enemy of pregnant women. Today, we know that even one drink of alcohol can be harmful to the baby, especially if taken during certain development milestones. So remember: total abstinence for 9 months. Some foodborne illness can have serious consequences in pregnant women: among the food-borne diseases, toxoplasmosis and listeriosis are particularly serious. Some tips: - Eat very well cooked meat. - Avoid consuming raw foods (smoked fish, and raw milk cheese from raw milk). - Avoid deli-like rillettes, pies and frozen products Remove the cheese rind. In all cases, try to take strict hygiene precautions for the preservation and handling of food. During pregnancy, avoid excess calorie foods too. Indeed, maternal obesity increases the risks for mother and child: hypertension, toxaemia, diabetes, urinary tract infections, thromboembolic accidents. The risks of childbirth are also increased, with a high percentage of Caesarean sections. Weight gain during pregnancy should be limited and warrants a very regular medical monitoring. You're in the family history of food allergy? If the father or the mother had a history of reaction to food, the baby allergic may be multiplied by two or three. And it is multiplied by 5 if both parents have experienced the problem. Above all, always ask advice from your doctor to confirm the risk of allergy for your baby and what foods to avoid, for the mother and the baby. Keep baby in as long as possible prior to diversify food: six months before introducing the first food. Do not give your baby eggs, wheat, fish, chocolate and citrus fruits before the age of one year (the doctor then to compose menus tailored to baby to avoid deficiencies). In case of 'Allergic to cow's milk, of course, avoid dairy products, but also those that contain lactose. In some cases, it should also outlaw beef and veal. Do not give the baby peanuts before the age of three.

The economy is on the brink of collapse the man on TV told me. Sales are down 10% for this category, 20% for that one, and even 30% for another. What can business people and employees do??? Go after the 70 to 90% of the business that remains with all you’ve got! Be good at what you do. Fight. What else can you do? You can feel bad about things. Sometimes I feel bad….oh, my head hurts….oh, I can’t buy that worthless piece of junk from China I was want-ing….oh poor me things are tough. Yada, Yada, Yada. But, in the final analysis, what we DO is all that counts. What can you DO to improve your circumstances? You can feel terrible or ten feet tall...but either way you end up DOing something, or the other, or nothing at all. Guess which one works? The best thing to do is something that improves your prospects...the second best thing to do is anything rather than nothing...and the worse thing of all is to sit down and do nothing...that one’s usually accompanied by crying and moaning...and it gets worse. Determine what you can do that might help. First study it. Use your mind, BEFORE you go about trying to make something happen. Put heads together. Talk with people you know and trust, people you believe are on your side. Hopefully you can trust some smart folks you know who can give you solid advice. Nothing better than several wise heads to chart a true course. Listen to people who offer you ideas. Some may be sales reps with agendas...so you might have to take them with a grain of salt, but if they talk common sense you might find some useful information there. Then, do several people you know and trust like your new ideas? Do people who are well informed about the topic like your ideas? Do people who loan money for such things think it is a good idea? Put a pencil to it. Think of every thing that could happen and account for some of that error. Never have pie in the sky ideals that costs will be the minimum and revenues will be maximum...that’s seldom the case. If this does-n’t make sense, don’t do it. Does you gut tell you it’s right? Guts are good things. Based on all the facts, after knowing and digesting all the pitfalls, does your heart still tell you it’s right for you? Then go. Go at it full blast...give it your best shot. Be it a job or business. If you’re going to do something...do it right. Give it all you’ve got. You may fail. That happens! But this path I describe, it’s the only one worth taking. It’s the honorable way to win or lose. Don’t quit. I don’t mean go down with the ship! But, you must stick to it fearlessly and persevere. Evaluate things as they go...continue to use your head all along the way. Make adjustments as needed. Being scared is not a plan of action. There are brave winners and los-ers in games, business, and life. Do this and someday you’ll win.

With Mike Woodard

Tuberville was a reasonably good coach. Heck, for several of the past ten seasons Alabama wished they’d had a coach so good. I’m not so sure that Tuberville got himself fired as much as Saban got him fired. Tuber-ville didn’t take Auburn to the pin-nacle. The process now in America is for the top twenty college teams to either be the national champion or fire the coach and waste millions of dollars. Tuberville got run over by Saban’s recruiting this year, Tuber-ville had a losing season, and Tuber-ville got spanked in a shut out against Alabama. Minus one of these and he’d of survived this sea-son to go on to another. But….strike three, he was out. But, was it justi-fied? It burns me up to hear any-body gets piles of money to not come to work anymore. Auburn University and the State of Alabama should be pink with embarrassment over throwing $6 million at Tuber-ville just to fire him. Be it a bank, industry, mortgage company, insur-ance, or football coach, the very idea of stealing money from taxpayers, or

investors, for this type thing boils my blood. It’s the very thing that has our nation is deep “you know” right now. Who is it that got the idea this should even be legal? Must have been a chorus of jerks who are pres-ently stealing our money. That sho don’t happen at my business. I fire somebody for under-performing and the only thing they get is the boot. Guess I’m just not a thief like the top people in our gov-ernment and biggest financial com-panies and industries. Now Auburn will buy an-other football coach for...oh, three million per year and this year one position in a public university will cost nine million dollars. There should be laws against this insanity. People in the “real world” are losing their jobs, homes, autos, and dreams….and our top state aca-demic and government systems are throwing millions away like fools. It’s not just our state, they did the same thing in Tennessee with Fulmer. And don’t think the same thing wouldn’t have happened here in Tuscaloosa if the shoe was on the other foot.

TUBERVILLE WALKS AWAY WITH $6 MILLION

Q: : How many head football coaches preceded Nick Saban at the University of Alabama?

A: 26. Saban is Alabama’s 27th head football coach

All hunters should admit that there are certain fears that come along with our sport. In my part of the country, the list of creepy creatures is growing. Bears are be-coming more numerous as well as mountain cats and plenty of rattlesnakes and cop-perheads. And I have to admit that in some of these places I tend to look over my shoulder when going in and out of the woods. I’ve also had the opportunity to hunt in other states as well. Most of the time I give little thought to anything but the game I’m after, but on some trips I’m well aware of what might be lurking. I can remember on several occasions being in the Deep South and keeping a watchful eye for alligators and those pesky but poisonous cotton-mouths. And the North West has too many grizzlies for me to be completely comfort-able. I know of some hunters who are almost paranoid when it comes to being in the woods after dark. Some refuse to go and others will only go if they are with some-one else. It’s all about fear. Some fear is healthy – even smart. It keeps us in check, causes us to be better prepared, and keeps us from bad decisions. But fear is also a great hindrance. Even though I don’t like the possibility of encountering an unwanted animal, I’m not going to let it keep me from enjoying hunting. And fear must not be the deciding factor in other areas of my life as well. Most people live very mundane lives because of fear. Fear locks them up. It keeps them within the safe confines of what they can see and hear. If they think about going outside certain boundaries, something inside them automatically begins to bring to mind all that might go wrong. Most sink back into normalcy when this happens. If there is to be any growth in our life, we will have to learn to deal with fear. Fear is not the enemy. It lets us know that we are living in a realm that we have not visited before. That realm is faith.

Faith, as the Bible says, is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. God ALWAYS calls us to this way of life. He speaks His truth to us and asks us to follow and believe Him even when we can’t see the way. He does this so that we and the watching world will know that He can be trusted, that He can accomplish more in us that we can do ourselves, and so that He will get the glory. Has God called you to something bigger than yourself? Have you been paralyzed by fear? Don’t run from it; instead recognize it for what it is. It’s simply a sign that’s letting you know, that you’re about to enter the land of spiritual giants.

- Lawns. This is a good time of year to winterize your mower and other equipment. First, run the engines dry of gasoline. That gas can gum up and prevent starts in the spring. Drain the oil and put fresh oil in. Disconnect the spark plug wire. Clean the air filter. Wash it with hot soapy water and dry...then pour a small amount of oil on it and squeeze it throughout. Remove the spark plug(s) and pour a teaspoon of clean oil in the hole. Replace the plug and spin the engine a little to distribute it. Clean the exterior of the machines. Remove and sharpen or replace the blades. You can again sod lawns as soon as the ground freezing is over late winter. But it’s best to wait until spring to sod. Wait until spring to plant any seeds for sure. Sometime late in the winter, before spring breaks, you may have to mow your lawn due to winter type weeds and onions growing up. But, it’s best to wait until later so your mower can sit for a while winterized and not have to need it twice or more. Do not fertilize at this time. If you have winter grass, you only water it if you see signs of dry distress...and we’re having plenty of rain right now, so that’s not a problem.
