Metin YURDANUR

Yurdanur was born in 1951 in Sivrihisar town of Eskişehir Province in Turkey. He spent his childhood until high school in his hometown, in a region, where remains of the Phrygian civilization were enriched by the art of Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman. He was impressed by antique works of art, especially by the three-millennium old Phrygian reliefs, that inspired him for plastic arts.

After finishing the high school, he enrolled as a boarding student in the Department of Arts at Gazi Institute of Education (Turkish: Gazi Eğitim Enstitüsü) in Ankara, what is today the Faculty of Vocational Education at Gazi University. He was educated in arts and graduated in 1972 as a high school teacher for arts.

He was soon appointed in Isparta, where he made in 1973 a monument of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic. He then served as drawing teacher at a high school in Mihalıççık town in Eskişehir Province. In 1978, he was appointed as teacher for sculpture in his alma mater.

During his time in Ankara, he created upon request of the city administration in 1979 mockups, which later were realized in Ankara as sculptures like "Eller" (The Hands) in Abdi İpekçi Park,"Nasreddin Hoca Riding the Hittite Lion Backwards" at Railroad Station Square, "Dayanışma" (Solidarity) in Batıkent and "Balerinler" (The Ballet Dancers) in Kavaklıdere.

Mehmet AKSOY

Mehmet Aksoy (born 1939) is a Turkish sculptor, called the "Anatolian Michelangelo". His sculptures often contain sensual figurative elements, but he is strongly rooted in a modernist sensibility with strong conceptual and abstract elements in his work. He works primarily in stone but also incorporates other material, fusing metal or differing stones in a single sculpture. He presently resides and works in a studio of his own dramatic design on the outskirts of Istanbul.

He was born 1939 in Hatay Province, Turkey,[1] a town that is today within Syrian territories. After completing his primary education in Yayladağı in Hatay Province, Tarsus, Mersin and Antalya, he enrolled 1960 in Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts (today Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts) to study painting. Later, Aksoy switched over to sculpture section, where he was educated by Prof. Şadi Çalık between 1961-1967. Following his military service, he served at the same academy as an assistant in 1969-1970. He went in 1970 to London after having received a state-granted scholarship for further studies. Aksoy moved to Germany to study at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, from where he obtained a master's degree in 1977. He returned in 1978 to Turkey and served until 1980 as an instructor at his alma mater.

Statue of Humanity

Statue of Humanity (2009) under construction in Kars

Statue of Humanity (Turkish: İnsanlık Anıtı) was a statue in Kars, Turkey created by Mehmet Aksoy. The monument, which depicted two human figures with hands reaching out to each other, stood 30 m (98 ft) high on Kazıktepe Hill across from the ancient Castle of Kars outside of the city and would have been visible from neighboring Armenia when completed. It was commissioned by Naif Alibeyoğlu, the former mayor of Kars, as a gesture of reconciliation in Armenia–Turkey relations following a 2009 accord to establish formal diplomatic recognition between the two.

Memorial to the Deserter (Turkish: İnsanlık Anıtı) is a statue in Unity Square, Potsdam, Germany created by Mehmet Aksoy. [citation needed] The figure in this memorial, which honors those who refuse to fight in unjust wars, is carved in negative relief, a technique that Aksoy employed in later work.

İlhan KOMAN

Ilhan Koman was born in Edirne, Turkey, in 1921. After finishing the Istanbul Mimar Sinan Academy of Fine Arts he went to Paris on a state scholarship for further studies at the 'Academie Julian'. In 1951 he returned to Turkey and taught at the Istanbul Academy until moving to Sweden in 1958. In 1965 Koman started his work on inventing diverging geometrical forms. Many of these have kinetic properties, such as flexible 3-D Moebius bands and polyhedra. He developed these forms as prototypes in various materials to be realised in large-scale projects. Much of his works remain in Sweden as full-scale monuments. His major works in his homeland Turkey are large metal outdoor sculptures in Istanbul ('Akdeniz'/'The Mediterranean' in 4. Levent, 'To Infinity…' in santralistanbul, an untitled work in Taksim, Portal a kinetic monumental piece that used to be in Stockholm Central Station since 1989 and which was brought to Bogazici University in 2008 thanks to the financial support of the Garanti Bank and the 'Pi' series, to be implemented on several campuses of Bogazici University at the end of the year 2008), a wall frieze at Atatürk's Mausoleum, and an untitled bronze sculpture in the Seymenler Park in Ankara.
