Program Description
Massage Therapists treat clients by using touch to manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. With their touch, they relieve pain, help heal injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients. Massage Therapists work in health clubs, gyms, day spas, corporate settings, massage clinics, with chiropractors or own their own business.

Employment OutlookMassage therapy is one of the fastest growing and most diverse occupations in the health care field. Employment of massage therapists is projected to grow 22% from 2016 to 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Earning potential for this profession is $39,860.
The Massage Therapy program includes topics such as anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology, hands-on techniques, massage theory and more. This comprehensive program prepares students to work with a wide variety of clientele in various environments. The Massage Therapy program prepares students for licensure in the state of Connecticut.
The following classes must be completed to receive a certificate and to apply for the national certification exam: • Pathology I, II, III • Skeletal and Muscular Anatomy of the Upper Body • Skeletal and Muscular Anatomy of the Lower Body • Massage Therapy 1, 2, 3 • Anatomy & Physiology • Kinesiology • Massage Theory and Practice • Massage Therapy Clinical • Special Populations • Chair Massage • Ethics • Eastern Theory • Business of Massage Therapy • MBLEX Review Class (Optional)
Students who complete this program will be eligible to take the national Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx). The MBLEx is governed by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). It is designed to provide a standard examination for students of massage for entry-level professional scope of practice in gaining licensure. This examination is required to obtain a license in the state of Connecticut.

Massage Therapy Program
Time CommitmentThis 13-month program includes 754 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of hands-on clinical training. Classes meet four evenings per week. Offered in the spring and fall.

Total cost of the Massage Therapy program: see attached sheet.
• Total cost includes tuition, administrative fee, internship, books, uniforms, and MBLEx. • WIOA approved. • Does not include licensing fee. • A payment plan is available.
Admissions Requirements
• Submit a registration form
• Must be 18 years old with a HS diploma or GED
Please be advised that if you have been convicted of a felony, you may not be eligible for clinical experiences, internships, externships or certifications associated with certain allied health courses or programs. Those with previous convictions may also find it difficult to secure employment within a health care setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS The following Essential Functions are expected of all students with or without academic adjustments. Students must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the job without endangering clients. Students with disabilities may be eligible for academic adjustments. Students must have the following abilities:
Proficiency in the use of the English language and must possess effective oral and written skills in order to accurately transmit appropriate information to clients, faculty, and colleagues. Dynamic Strength — The ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. This involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue.
Manual Dexterity — The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
Trunk Strength — The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.
Multi-limbed Coordination — The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
Adequate senses – hearing, touch and vision.
Interpersonal skills such that you are capable of interacting with individuals from a variety of social, economic and ethical backgrounds.
The ability to present a professional appearance, maintain personal health and be emotionally stable.
Arm-Hand Steadiness — The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
Stamina — The ability to exert yourself physically over long periods of time without getting winded or out of breath.
Static Strength — The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
Extent Flexibility — The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
Finger Dexterity — The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Withdrawal/Refunds: Refunds may be obtained if your written withdrawal is submitted to the Continuing Education & Workforce Development Office three business days prior to the first meeting of class. Refunds generally take 2-4 weeks to process. There are no refunds once a class has started or for fees labeled “non-refundable”.
