Wow another Term has flown by and we are again reflecting on some amazing opportunities and achievements. For a rural country high school THS continues to compete and succeed at local, regional, state and world levels. The F1 Team were phenomenal in placing in the Top 20 of a world competition which is considered one of the premier STEM competitions in the world. Our Tournament Of The Minds Team again take out regional honours and go on to compete with the best in the State, while our Chess Team go interstate to compete in the ACT Championships. Additionally, our sporting teams in Rugby League, Basketball and Netball have shown that isolation is no barrier in beating teams from across the State. As we farewell our Year 12 cohort group and wish them the best for the HSC and in their lives ahead, I hope we can all sit back and feel a sense of pride in everything that makes Tumut High School what it is, a public comprehensive High School. Principal, Mr Don Dixon Congratulations to Tumut High School F1 in schools team IOTA who came 20 th at the World Finals held in Singapore. The team were rewarded with two nominations in the top 3 for awards in scrutineering and team identity. An amazing achievement after many hours of hard work. Well done to the boys and team mentor Mr Crain. Congratulations to the Tumut High School rugby league team who are the Riverina Champions securing the Cup by defeating Yanco 20-16 in the final round. Sydney Jewish Museum On Thursday the 13th of September, Year 11 and 12 Modern History students travelled to Sydney as part of a two day excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum. Students had an opportunity to attend seminars, experience a guided tour of the museum and listen to the testimonies of two Holocaust survivors.

The first day started with a guided tour of the refurbished museum, which examined the origins and impact of the Holocaust.

Students observed the windows into the Holocaust exhibitions which covered such topics as Hitler’s rise to power, life in the ghettoes, acts of defiance and resistance in the face of the Nazi genocide, the implementation of the ‘Final Solution’ and life in the concentration and death camps. This was followed by the ‘Conflict in Europe’ workshop, which focused on Nazi Germany and the progression of the Holocaust on the Eastern front. Students also had to the opportunity to listen to Holocaust survivor Maurice Linker, who provided a powerful and confronting talk about his experiences in Romania during the Second World War. He spoke of his experiences prior to the war as well as being forced to live in a ghetto, where he and his family endured persecution at the hands of the Nazis.

On the second day students were able to explore the three levels of the museum on their own, including temporary exhibitions like ‘Unseen Untold: Our Curious Collection’ and permanent ones like ‘The Holocaust and Human Rights’. This was followed by the workshop ‘Albert Speer: Technocrat of Genocide’, which focused on Albert Speer’s career as First Architect of the Reich and as Minister of Armaments and War Production. Students then listened to Egon Sonnenschein who discussed his harrowing experiences in the former Yugoslavia. He shared his recollections of the Nazi invasion of Slovenia as well as the journey he experienced as he and his family were forced to flee to Italy and then Switzerland.

The Preliminary and HSC students really enjoyed the museum visit and felt that it was of great benefit to them in preparation for their final examinations.

AgVision 2018 More than 600 students from across New South Wales gathered in Junee on the 7th September to explore careers in agriculture at AgVision. The workshops showcased the broad spectrum of ag careers, from sheep breeding to rural crime and stock and station agents. Students could pick some of the workshops that they were interested in. It was an inspiring day for the Tumut High School students and they are looking forward to the next biannual event in Junee in 2020.

Henty Machinery Field Day 2018 Students enjoyed a great spring day walking around Henty Machinery Field Day, observing what’s new in agriculture and enjoying the opportunity to learn in the outdoors.

Evolution of Business Students in the Year 10 elective class "Evolution of Business" have been participating in the $20 Boss Program - a project based learning opportunity designed by the Foundation for Young Australians. This is an immersive entrepreneurship program where each student is provided with $20 of start-up capital to create, launch and operate their venture over the course of a school term.

After doing their market research, the students chose to sell chocolate thick shakes and mixed berry smoothies under the business name “Feel Good”. Their business was able to make a profit of over $400, which they will be donating to the R U OK? Foundation. Respect, Responsibility, Safety

Music Experience The recent Montreal concert featuring James Morrison & his Jazz Orchestra was an outstanding success. Prior to the concert, students had the opportunity to attend a one hour workshop.

THS guitarists Zack Turvey (Year 12) and Damon O’Brien (Year 10) Year 12 students Connor Akers & Ryan Stuckey also worked with lighting & sound.

Snow Trip 2018 A group of keen skiers and snowboarders made their way up to Selwyn Ski Resort for an awesome day at the snow in August. An early start saw us hit the slopes for a big day. The snow was exceptional; plenty of it and it snowed all day, making the day bitterly cold. But nothing stops Tumut High kids from making the most

of the day and many fun times were had, with everyone having their fair share of falls in the fresh powder, but in good spirit, we were all able to get up and dust ourselves off and power on. The day seemed to go so quickly, but we were all thankful for the fun times we’d had and especially thankful to Mr Brown and Ms Perry for accompanying us, our resident talented skier and snowboarder respectfully. Also many thanks to Selwyn for hosting us and supplying us with great snow, that’s always a nice thing to have on a ski trip. By Samantha Barton, Year 11

Central Australia 2018 Years 9, 10 &11 students departed on 23rd September for their 2 week trip. They are having a great time touring South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland.
