From the EditorI guess one of the things I’ve learned is that publishing a quarterly newsletter isn’t as easy as it might seem! Myapologies for the delays in getting this third issue out. Even though December is almost upon us as I’m writingthis, I still plan to publish a fourth issue for this year, although I suspect it too will be late. I think one of thelessons I need to learn is when to stop in putting an issue together! This issue just seemed to keep growing andgrowing! And I found that my “real” job and my personal life needed to take priority over the newsletter, which is still just a hobby. I work for a large financial services company, which has not been immune to theeconomy for the past couple of years, so we were forced into layoffs recently. Thankfully, I still have my job,but as someone who manages a department that was being cut in half, I had to make very painful decisionsabout the layoffs. I hope that’s something I never have to do again. On a personal note, my wife, Susan, hasbeen diagnosed with breast cancer. She has now had the surgery to remove it and is recovering well, but stillhas a long treatment period ahead of her. Your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated.

The first item in this issue is a full name index to The Tullis Tracer, which was a family history newsletterpublished from 1975 to 1981 by Don and Linda (Tullis) Moran. In many ways, it was what inspired me to startpublishing this newsletter. Although scanned copies of all issues of The Tullis Tracer are available on the web,a name index to the issues has not existed... until now! A Tullis researcher, Margo Broehl, went through thelaborious process of indexing the names in all of the issues, and we can now benefit from her work!

Next is an article by Richard Tullis about Robert Tullis (1775-1831) of Fife, Scotland. He founded R. Tullis &Company, which later became Tullis Russell and Co. Ltd., a successful paper-making company that still existstoday. Richard has done more research into the early Tullis family tree than just about any other researcher thatI know. This article traces Robert’s ancestors and descendants. Richard has graciously agreed to share hisinformation with us, and I look forward to including more articles by him in future issues.

Next is an article I wrote about my great-grandfather, Dr. Newell Gibson Tullis, who is also pictured on thecover. I’m hoping that this article might serve as an example of a relatively easy way that others could provideinformation on their Tullis ancestors’ families. Basically, it starts with a paragraph summarizing Dr. Tullis’s lifeand his family. That’s followed by family group sheets giving the basic genealogical facts about all of the familymembers. The rest of the article contains photos of the family, copies of the family history pages from theirFamily Bible, copies of marriage records, and obituaries. The format doesn’t have to be the same for everyarticle like this. The key point is that you don’t have to write a long narrative to create an article like this, so Ihope others will consider pulling material like this together on their Tullis ancestors.

Next is another section that I hope will become a regular feature of this newsletter, which is old photos ofTullises and their families. These photos were submitted by Gerry Del Rio of her grandparents, Harvey Tullisand Gladys Pyle. Also included are photos of Harvey’s parents, Isaac Tullis and Nancy Jane Fairchild. Pleasesubmit copies of your old Tullis photos!

Finally, we have a page of information submitted by Sherri Tullis including an obituary for Michael Tullis (1815-1902) as well as photos of his gravestone and that of his wife in Ottumwa, IA. And on the last page, we haveseveral Tullis queries submitted by readers and a “mystery photo” believed to include an Earl Tullis.

Editor’s Note: The Tullis Tracer was a family-tree newsletter published from 1975 to 1981 by Don and Linda(Tullis) Moran. Ten issues were published. Scanned copies of all issues are available on the web at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tullis/TullisTracer/. However, a name index to those issues has not ex-isted... until now! The following complete name index was compiled by Margo Broehl ([email protected]).Thank you, Margo, on behalf of all Tullis family-tree researchers! The entries below for each name indicate theVolume and Issue numbers (e.g., “2:1” refers to Volume 2, Number 1) followed by the page number(s). When awoman’s maiden name was known, she is generally listed under that name; otherwise, she is probably listedunder her married name. Depending upon how she was referenced in the original articles, she may appearunder both. This index will also be available online on both the Tullis Trees and Tullis Tracer web sites.

Introduction

Robert Tullis (1775-1831) founded R. Tullis & Company (laterTullis Russell and Co. Ltd.) in Fife, Scotland. After moving fromSt. Andrews to Cupar in 1797, he established the company asa bookshop and bindery and soon expanded the business toinclude a printing press. The Tullis Press captured the commer-cial printing market in Fife and its surrounding area and, be-tween 1803 and 1849, published more than two hundred books. These included books of poetry, historical and scientific works, textbooks and English and Latin classics. Robert Tullis addedto the company the Auchmuty paper mill in Markinch in 1809and became one of the earliest paper manufacturers in Scot-land. In 1822, he began publishing the Fife Herald, the firstnewspaper to be published in Fife. Although R. Tullis & Com-pany began as a partnership of seven and its compositionchanged through the years, the company was essentially the cre-ation of its founder, Robert Tullis.

In her book Tullis Russell: The History of Tullis Russell &Co. Ltd., C.D.M. Ketelbey wrote (p. 10):

Robert Tullis was a deeply ingrained Fifer by birth and family connection. His son William tracedfour score descendants, up to his own generation, from a Fife great-grandfather, sown thickthrough the villages of South, East and Central Fife, especially about the parishes of Largo,Newburn, Cupar, and St. Andrews. Many of them were tenant farmers, some were rural crafts-men, a few had mercantile and professional connections. They seem to have spread outwardsfrom the Largo area to Cupar and St. Andrews and their neighborhoods. . . Ten variants of thename occur within the family— some for the same man at different times— Tillas, Tillias, Tillos,Tellos, Tyllos, Tholas, Tullis, Tulles, Tullos and Tulls, but Tullis seems to have become standardby the beginning of the nineteenth century.

The Preceding GenerationsRobert Tullis was a son of William Tullis, an ironworker (hammerman or smith) in Argyle, just outside the WestPort in St. Andrews. Robert’s grandfather, also Robert Tullis, was born in about 1700 and was an ironworkerin Newbigging, Lawhill and a tenant and feuar of Blinkbonny in the parish of Newburn, both near Largo, Fife.

Generation Number 1

Robert Tullis (Tillas), born in about 1700, married Margaret Miller in 1724. The children of Robert andMargaret were:

1. David2. William3. Robert4. John5. Margaret6. Euphaim7. Agnes

Generation Number 2

William Tullis (Tillas) (1729-1791), was the second son of Robert. He was the first in his family tomove to St. Andrews where he followed his father’s craft and was elected Deacon of the Hammermenof St. Andrews (craftsmen widely known for their wrought iron work) and served on the Burgh Coun-cil. He married Jane Russell of Dumbarnie, near Largo, whose brother Alexander Russell was marriedto William’s sister, Agnes. William and Jane had seven sons, four of whom died young. The threeremaining sons were:

1. David2. Robert3. William

William’s oldest son David (1767-1837) followed the craft of his father and grandfather and becameDeacon of the Hammermen and was appointed Burgh Council Assessor. He died childless. William’sthird son William (1780-1867) was sent to Edinburgh or Leith where he had family connections and became acommercial baker and later a corn merchant, member of the Police Commission and City Magistrate. William,a shareholder in R. Tullis & Company, was known as a “thorough Conservative” and had purchased propertyin Fife in order to vote there and “uphold the honour of his family against his Whig nephews.” He died in 1867and, like his brother David, was childless.

Robert Tullis, Founder of R. Tullis & CompanyGeneration Number 3

Robert Tullis, the second son of William, was born in 1775 near St. Andrews. The extent of Robert’s formaleducation is not known although he may have attended the “Latin” or “English School” for a year or two. At theage of 11, he was bound apprentice to Patrick Bower, St. Andrews University bookbinder and stationer whoundertook to “teach, learn and instruct” him in the “business and employment of bookseller and bookbinding.”He completed the apprenticeship in about 1790 when he was 15 or 16 years of age.

It appears that Robert Tullis thereafter learned printing from James Morison, the University Printer (a positionto which Robert was later appointed in 1808). In about 1797, Robert moved a distance of about ten milesfrom St. Andrews to the market town of Cupar where he became a bookseller. In 1801, Robert purchased aproperty in the center of Cupar, at 6-8 Bonneygate, where he established a bookshop with a bindery and, in1803, a printing press and book publishing business. In 1809, Robert purchased what became the Auchmutypaper mill (formerly a bankrupt meal mill) near Markinch, on the river Leven. In 1822, he began publishing theFife Herald (originally the Cupar Herald). He was Burgh Councillor in Cupar and a leading public figure in

East Fife.

Robert Tullis married Agnes Smith in October 1804. She was the only daughter and oldest child of GeorgeSmith, tenant in Kinnaird in the parish of Kemback, between St. Andrews and Cupar. Kinnaird was a substan-tial farm which had been held by the Smiths for a century on successive leases from the Makgills of Kemback. The children of Robert and Agnes were:

1. George Smith2. William3. Robert4. Jane (or Jean)5. Alison (or Alice)6. Christina (Christine)(Two other sons died in infancy)

Between 1820 and 1828, Robert’s three sons (and two other Tullises) were students on the rolls of St.Andrew University. Jane married J.P. Nichol, one of Robert Tullis’ editors at the Herald. He was thefather of John Nichol, who became Professor of English in Glasgow. Christina, born in 1818, marriedWilliam Nichol, typographer in Edinburgh and brother of J.P. Nichol, about 1838. They had six chil-dren (Alfred, the fourth son, became manager of the Rothes paper mill which the company purchasedin 1836 and later became a partner in the firm). Alison (1812-1845) married James Wallace, a merchantand bookseller. They had two children before their marriage ended; Alison died in 1845. By this time,Robert had died in 1831 at the age of 56.

Following GenerationsGeneration Number 4

Robert’s son George Smith Tullis (1805-1848) received as a disposition under his father’s will the rightto purchase the bookselling, stationary and publishing businesses started by his father. George becamea Burgh Councillor in Cupar and a leading businessman, book printer and publisher of the oldest localnewspaper. Under George’s direction, the Fife Herald became known for its radical partisanship “help-ing forward the earth-shaking march of democracy” and proclaiming its hostility to peers, millionaires, the landed interest and the “unjust privilege of caste.” Under George, the newspaper became so radicalthat it provoked the Fife Tories into founding a rival newspaper in their own interest, The FifeshireJournal. George died at the age of 42 from an illness of only a few days duration.

George was married twice and left a widow and a son; a daughter had died in infancy and anotherdaughter died at the age of six. His son was:

1. Robert

Robert’s sons William (1807-1883) and Robert (1813-1839) received the right under their father’s willto purchase his interest in the Auchmuty paper mill. In 1836, they purchased a paper mill in Rotheswhich had been owned by David Lindsay. Robert Tullis died suddenly at Auchmuty of tubercular feverin 1839 without issue.

In 1845, William Tullis and his cousin, James Thrift Smith (the son of James Smith who was thebrother of Agnes Smith, William’s mother and the wife of Robert Tullis, the founder of R. Tullis &Company) became “managing partners” of the company. In 1846, R. Tullis & Company purchased theRothes Bleachfield which brought within control of the company the entire stretch of the south bank of the river

William Tullis married Agnes Russell (1817-1898) in 1846.They had no children; however, Robert, the son of GeorgeSmith Tullis, lived with them after his father’s death. Williamenlarged the scale of the two paper mills and bleaching busi-ness, doubling the firm’s output and more than doubling itsworking capital. His good relations with his employees werelegendary and they “grew old in his service.” He was one ofthe earliest directors of the Edinburgh, Perth and DundeeRailway. William favored free trade and was an ardent fol-lower of economist Adam Smith (Smith was born in 1724 inKirkcaldy, Fife and had served as Commissioner of Cus-toms for Scotland). William supported “Complete Suffrag-ists”, reform in Scottish Church and revision of the Law ofEntail and Primogeniture. He was described in a passport as“William Tullis, Esquire, a person of great respectability. . .about to proceed to France.” Among William’s closest friendswere Liberal Members of Parliament and political reformersand his Rothes House was described a “political salon forthe Liberal Party.” However, in 1864 William broke with theLiberals in reaction to government trade policies that adversely affected Scottish and English paper manufac-turers.

Generation Number 5

Robert Tullis (1842-1936), the son of George Smith Tullis, be-came a partner in R. Tullis & Company in 1872; he joined Will-iam, his uncle, and James Thrift Smith. Robert operated the FifeHerald until 1879 when he sold it along with the bookstore andpress in Cupar to John Innes who had been editor of the Herald. In 1864, David Russell and Arthur Russell joined as partners inthe papermaking and bleaching businesses. This partnership ap-pears to have continued a relationship between the Tullises andthe Russells that is documented by marriage and baptismal recordsand business connections. The mother of Robert Tullis (thefounder) was a Russell as well as his uncle by marriage and oneof the sponsors of his baptism; he sold books to Russells, was aneighbor of a Russell and a Russell was a one-time editor of theHerald.

In 1873, Robert Tullis married Annie Cunison Drysdale, thedaughter of William Drysdale of Kilrie, Fife. Their sons were:

1. George Smith2. William3. Robert4. John Drysdale

By 1892, death or retirement had reduced the number of partners in the company to two, Robert Tullis, andDavid Russell. They were subsequently joined by David Russell’s sons Robert and Sir David Russell.

Generation Number 6

Robert’s sons George Smith Tullis (1879-1955) and Robert Tullis (1887-1965) served in France duringWorld War I; George was a captain in the 1st/7th Black Watch Territorials and Robert, Jr. went toFrance in 1915 with the 43rd Field Ambulance 14th Division. The older Robert had two other sons,John Drysdale Tullis and William Tullis, who were captains in the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Both werekilled in France. John died in November 1914 after being fatally wounded in the first battle of Ypres;William was killed in the battle of the Somme in 1916.

In 1906, the name of the firm was changed from R. Tullis & Company to Tullis Russell & Co. Ltd. asan official acknowledgement of the contribution made by David Russell. When World War I ended,Captain George S. Tullis shared the management of the Rothes paper mill with Robert Russell and, later, became Director of the papermaking firm of John Galloway & Co. Ltd. Robert, Jr. became theproprietor of the Rothes bleachfield in 1924. That year, David Russell and his brother Robert Russellbought the shares of Tullis Russell Co. Ltd. owned by the older Robert Tullis and his two sons. RobertJr., however, continued to operate the bleachfield as a separate business until he retired in 1959.

The older Robert Tullis died in 1936 at the age of 94. In 1905 he had moved up the river from AuchmutyHouse to Strathenry where he lived to become an elderly country gentleman. Keteley wrote: “A gener-ous kindliness and courtesy pervades his records, and a great integrity, but there is something of sad-ness too in the story of a man who saw his inheritance pass out his hands.”

Newell Gibson Tullis Family

Dr. Newell Gibson Tullis (1850-1902), who is also shown on the cover,is pictured here on the right. The identity of the other man is un-known. N. G. Tullis was the only son of Dr. James Monroe Tullis. Thisphoto was taken in Thomasville, GA, about 1900.

Editor’s Note: This article is an experiment in a relatively standardized and easy way of documentinga Tullis family. This particular family is that of Dr. Newell Gibson Tullis, my great-grandfather. Butmy hope is that others would find it easier to submit information in this format for inclusion in futureissues than to actually write a complete article. Basically, the format is to start with a brief introduc-tory paragraph about the family, then include a family group sheet (or multiple sheets if there was morethan one marriage), followed by family photos and documents (e.g., Bible records, marriage records, obituaries).

Newell Gibson Tullis was born on July 9, 1850, in Buena Vista, Marion Co., Georgia, the only son ofDr. James Monroe Tullis and his wife Patience. (James Monroe and his family were profiled in Vol. 1,No. 1, of Tullis Trees.) Newell Gibson followed in his father’s footsteps and attended the GeorgiaMedical College in Augusta, graduating on March 1, 1872. From then on, his friends apparently calledhim “Dr. Gib”. He married Jennie Carrie Ainsworth, daughter of the Rev. James T. Ainsworth, on June23, 1875, in Magnolia Springs, Sumter Co., Georgia. By about 1880, the family had moved toThomasville, Georgia, where Dr. Tullis established his medical practice. Newell Gibson and Jenniehad two children who lived to adulthood, Eula Weston and William Ainsworth, and two who died ininfancy. Jennie died of complications from childbirth on June 26, 1884. This photo of Dr. Newell Gibson Tullis and his office was probably taken about 1900 (age 50). His office is thesmall building on the left. In the full-size version of this photo you can barely make out his "shingle" on the porchrailing which says "Dr. Tullis". Note his doctor's bag which he has left on the ground just in front of the gate to theoffice to pose for the photo. The corner of the Tullis home (see photo on next page) can be seen on the right.

Mystery Tullis! The two men in this photo are identified as (L-R) Milo RueChamberlain and Earl Tullis. The photo is believed to havebeen taken in Vinita (Craig Co), OK, near the Tullis Ranch.Milo was born in 1895. Given the apparent ages of the youngmen, the photo was probably taken about 1915. This photo isin the possession of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth F. Tullis, of Mem-phis, TN. (Ken is your Editor’s brother!) But the interestingthing is that the photo is not one that was handed down in ourTullis family. Milo Chamberlain, pictured here, was a maternaluncle of Ken’s wife, the former Madge Wood, and the photowas handed down in her family.

If anyone can provide any information about this Earl Tullis, please contact the Editor ([email protected]).
