“ Our professors are not only concerned with how we perform in their classes; they are interested in our research, our teaching methods, and our futures. It is never a question of ‘Will I find a mentor?’ Rather, it is one of ‘Which one of these amazing thinkers will I choose?’ ”

Fiona Maurissette, Ph.D. candidate, English

Boston and Medford/Somerville

Tufts is located just five miles outside of Boston, a vibrant metropolitan city rich in both history and world-class cultural resources. In fact, Forbes Magazine ranked Boston ninth among the 20 coolest cities in America in 2014.

Boston is also a center of intellectual inquiry and learning, with nine research universities and a total of 60 higher education institutions in its vicinity. Through courses offered at other institutions and the use of greater Boston’s libraries, labs, and centers, graduate students are integrated into the academic fiber of this intellectual city.

Our location in Medford/Somerville offers the perfect combination — a beautiful residential campus just a few miles away from Boston proper. Convenient transportation and reasonable housing costs allow graduate students to have the best of both worlds. Somerville’s Davis Square, just down the hill from campus, boasts an array of stores, clubs, restaurants, entertainment options, and a subway stop which provides easy access to Boston, Cambridge, and other points of interest.

“ I love Tufts! It has research opportunities in cutting-edge fields, exceptional student, faculty, and staff camaraderie, a dedicated career center to help students with job and internship searches, and an understanding and helpful international center to help international students navigate life in a new environment. ”Chiamaka Chima Master’s student, Electrical Engineering

Chima is from Nnewi, Nigeria. She’s working on a voice-box project that uses signal processing to create natural sounding voices for people who have had their larynxes surgically removed.

Interdisciplinary ProgramsTufts offers many interdisciplinary degrees across arts and sciences and engineering, including programs in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, as well as Cognitive Science, which bridges computer science, psychology, and child development. Partnerships with Boston-based universities — and our other professional schools of medicine, nutrition, dentistry, and veterinary medicine — enhance our academic offerings beyond traditional master’s and doctoral degrees. Some of our signature areas of interdisciplinary research include sustainability, human health, and technology interface.

We also offer teaching licensure in a variety of disciplines.

Tufts is a recipient of two National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) awards in doctoral programs of Soft Material Robotics and Water Diplomacy. These prestigious fellowships allow our students to work in a collaborative environment in which research transcends disciplinary boundaries. Professional Development Workshops

A critical ingredient of graduate student success is peer support and guidance from faculty members and administrators. Tufts recognizes the importance of career development and a strong graduate community. That’s why we offer mentoring programs and workshops that empower graduate students with the professional and leadership skills to help them succeed in graduate school and beyond. Among our many professional development workshops are seminars in: Teacher Training, Preparing for the Job Market, Grant Writing, and Conflict Resolution.

“ Graduate students are the heart and the soul of teaching at Tufts. They are a vital part of the university community and integral to everything we do. ”Karen Panetta Associate Dean for Graduate Education of the School of Engineering, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Dr. Panetta’s research in human visual system modeling and simulation has revolutionized image processing. Her patented algorithms are used for cancer screening, image enhancement, and airport baggage security. In 2011, President Obama awarded her the nation’s highest award for Engineering, Science and Mathematics Education and Mentoring.
