Fall Fun night is Just 12 Days away!

You can help make this a great outreach event!

•Invite your friends and neighbors to come.

•Donate candy and other goodies – Individually wrapped candy, individual serving size packages of Goldfish, fruit snacks, raisins, etc. Donations can be left in the candy buckets located around the building or in the Children’s Ministries office.

•Volunteer –Help with a game or with concessions. Be a part of the set-up or tear-down crew. Do advance preparation in the office or at home. Call the Children’s Ministries office @255.2122 to volunteer. Don’t miss out on all the fun!

alPHa is here.

We got off to a great start last Monday night but didn’t see you there. There is still plenty of time to get on board. Why not invite that unsaved or searching friend to join you for a great Monday night meal, an engaging video and a fun group breakout time to explore what you learn in a relaxed environment.

Maybe you still have some questions about the basics of the Christian faith you would like to be more sure of. You WILL-learn a lot! REALLY worth the 10 week investment.

Questions like: Can you trust the Bible? How did we get the Bible? Why did Jesus have to die? Is Jesus really the Son of God? What is the Trinity? and who and what does the Holy Spirit do? just to name a few.

We have seen a 100% satisfaction rate from all who have gone before you. That’s as good asCrest toothpaste on killing germs.

Sharing Christ with a friend, neighbor or co-workerjust doesn’t get any easier than this.

What’s holding you back?

See you Monday night at 6:00pm in the Backoor!Alpha ends promptly at 8:30.

HelP neeDeD!

We all love having that cup of coffee on Sunday morning at the Fed Café, but it takes lots of hands to get everything ready. There is a need for more people to help prepare and serve the coffee and snacks. Contact the church office at 255-2122 to volunteer.

Do you need to establish relationships here at Federated? LIFE GROUPS are the main way that we connect people with each other. They are small groups that meet throughout the week to “do life together”, and most are organized by the “stage of life” that you are currently in. To find out more, visit www.firstfederated.org or check the “small groups” box on the Care and Communication Card.

life Group Discussion Questions

1. What truths from Sunday’s message impacted you the most?

2. Can you recall a time from your childhood where you did not take the blame for something you should

have, but blamed someone else instead? What was the result of that “blame game”—how did it turn out?

3. How is the “blame game” evident in the very first act of human sin? (Read Gen. 3:1-13) Who does God hold accountable for their sin in this passage? (Read Gen. 3:14-19) It is obvious that God punished sin in this

passage, but when the sin was confessed, God also showed His mercy. In what ways do we see the mercy of God in this passage? (Read Gen. 3:20-24)

4. What other passages of Scripture can you think of where God’s mercy was granted when sin was confessed? (It is not necessary that you know the reference, just recall the story as you know it.)

5. The Bible is clear that God’s mercies are new every morn - ing (Lamentations 3:23). With that being the case, why do you think we still struggle with confession?

6. As a group, have a short brainstorming session and have someone record your list of all the BENEFITS of con-

fessing our sin (to God AND other people) versus keep ing our sin secret or blaming someone else for them.

MISSION ONE Reaching others for Jesus Christ

Dr. Bill Becknell

Please join us for lunch, meet and hear Dr. Bill (Russia) and Nathan (closed country) share their ministry in Fellow-ship Hall at 11:00 am, next Sunday, October 24.

As a physician, Dr. Bill serves with medical and lay people forming expedition teams that travel north to the Arctic Tundra and Siberia. Teams supply and distribute Agape Health Kits to the very poor and share Christ with many who have never heard. Dr. Bill is the first American to receive a Family Practice diploma from Russia. The ministry has helped start 49 churches and the medical staff has grown to 53.

Nathan & Kathy serve with nationals to make disciples for Jesus Christ among an unreached people group. Their goal is to extend the hands of indigenous mission leaders, through facili-tating prayer, providing practical help and strategic initiatives. Their area is the seat of a false religion, the abode of their gods, and held sacred for its holy rivers and places of pilgrimage.

The prayer goal is to see a body of disciples living out Jesus in each of the 9,300 mountain villages in their region.

lee & Michelle sonius

Mission Board: HCJB GlobalLocation: Accra, GhanaWhat do they do? Lee is Re-

Michelle is the regional bookkeeper and facilitates a women’s Bible study in their home.

• For the processing of paperwork to obtain their quota posi- tion (so far a 3 year process).

• For son TJ at high school in Kenya; Kyle in 5th grade at home.

• Michelle as she serves as regional bookkeeper.

George Rivera (Jan. 15, 1931-aug. 27, 2010) Friends of Mexico, Inc., Galeana, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

George surrendered his life to Christ in 1953 in Southern California. He set out on a 3 week trip to Mexico and stayed 3 months. Returning to California, he sold all his belongings and went to serve full time in the little town of Galeana.

Involving young people in teams, the evangelistic emphasis was on neighboring villages. The outreach included crafts, Bible stories, VBS, visitation, distribution of Gospels/literature and instrumental numbers.

George’s ministry endeavors also included area crusades, prison ministries and sports evangelism. He brought the first Christian Medical Society to Latin America.

George loved missions and had an incredible passion to serve. Thousands were reached for Christ through this devoted missionary.

First Federated Church sent its first youth group to Galeana in 1966. Over the years many adults and several FFC pastors joined the youth on summer short term teams. Countless lives were changed and challenged for missions.

George is survived by his wife, Rebeca, children Bobby (OR), Laura and her husband Jake Sarinana (CO), 5 grandchildren and many relatives.

Rebeca continues to serve on the FOM Board. Pray as they seek God’s will for the future of FOM.

JH Blitz: November 12So have you ever wanted to go roller-skating, rock-climbing,

play broomball, & go bowling all in one night? Throw in a mega-rally, a stellar band & about 300 kids and you’re well on your way to the fantasy-come-true called BLITZ! The cost is only $35 for all this crazy fun. Get your friends together and sign up! 8pm - 8am (JH only)

Other Important Happenings:

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT: Howie and Juls want to see our students play ball. This year we don’t want to go alone! We will post a schedule of the games we’re seeing and will encourage the youth group to go and support their friends when possible. Send us your schedules for all your fall sports /events! But even more—we want to be a witness— we will have gospel bracelets to give away to students and will pray for God to give us the opportunity to be a witness. Come encourage and reach out all at once!

Special Need:Passion For Pancakes?Every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, Lincoln and

Roosevelt high school students meet, pray and hear God’s word presented by area youth pastors (Howie included) over a breakfast of pancakes. We have a need for bulk pancake mixes (Sam’s Club or Costco sells a 10lb bag of Krustez—we request “add water” only mixes) and bulk syrup (64 oz) donated for these weekly meetings. If you think you’d like to minister to area teens by donating pancake mix or syrup, please place these items in the donation box outside the youth ministry office. Thank you!!

PEACE LOVE AND PANCAKES UPDATE!Our Lincoln and Roosevelt pancake ministries are both up

and rolling! Each week Christian students from each school share from God’s Word and from their own testimonies. And so far we are growing! Lincoln started with just 20 in at-tendance this fall and this week we had at least 45 in attendance. Our own Kelsie Langford shared with the students that day and did a terrific job! After 3 weeks of prayer and organization meetings, this week we finally started ministry at Roosevelt for the first time. The results: an overwhelming turning out. I don’t think I could even count the true number of students. But from what we can figure based on our best attempts, 75-100 students attended this week’s ministry alone. They were respectful and very receptive and apprecia-tive. THANK YOU for all who have prayed for each of these ministries. THANK YOU for those who have donated pancake batter and syrup. We are definitely flying through both now and your donations have helped us not only feed their bellies, but also feed their souls!

the Program…

Come along as we take a musical trip down memory lane with the R.B.J. Trio this month. Tap your feet to some oldies from your youth, as well as familiar hymns and some original numbers. You may even want to sing along!

When Rick and Beth McReynolds aren’t busy pastoring a church here in Des Moines, they join with Jack O’Leary to en-tertain folks at local farmer’s markets and other area events. We think you’ll enjoy their combination of 3-part harmony, keyboard and guitar accompaniment and a little humor, too.

the Meal…

We will be serving baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, corn, salad, rolls and chocolate cake. To make your reservation mark the box on the Care & Communication card today!

and a Challenge…

Now you can be part of making a special childhood memory for a needy child. Soon First Federated will be collecting shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child, a project of Franklin Graham’s ministry, Samaritan’s Purse. In addition to the hundreds of filled boxes brought in by families and individuals, some boxes will be packed by our Kindergarten – 4th graders during KZ Church. The children are bringing offerings for the project, but they’ll need many items to fill their boxes. You can help by bringing one of the following items to 60+ in October. (Remember, all items must be new.)

•A hygiene item such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, wash cloth, comb, or brush

•A small toy—Hot Wheels car, small doll, kazoo, har monica, yo-yo, jump rope, etc.

•Child’s clothing item or accessory—T-shirt, socks, sunglasses, hair clips, flashlight with batteries.

want a Huge Blessing?

Then come to see some of your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ proclaim publically that they want to follow Jesus! They will be doing this by getting baptized, and sharing their story about how they came to faith in Christ. If you’ve never been to a baptismal service, you are missing out on one of the BIGGEST blessings in the life of a local church body, so I (Pastor Danny) would challenge you to put Sunday, October 24th on your calen-dar. The service will take place immediately following the River Service over in the large auditorium, and will only be about ½ hour in length. Not only will YOU be blessed, but your presence will be a big blessing to those getting baptized as well!

sign up to Help with Funeral luncheons

At Federated, we are happy to provide luncheons prior to or following a funeral service for family of members/regular attenders. To do this, we need a list of volunteers who are will-ing to help with preparation or clean-up and another list of those who are willing to bring food (salad for 10-12, dessert for 18, or other items requested). With enough volunteers, you may only get a call once or twice a year, depending on how many funerals occur.

If you are willing to be on either or both lists, please let Penny Murphy know by calling her at 277-2040 or emailing her at [email protected]. Give her your name, phone number,
