Warm Up: What were the things about Britain that the Americans HATED that they used to shape their new constitution?

•Taxes- Americans were fearful of too many taxes

•Too strong of a government- Britain ruled with a heavy fist, Americans didn’t want that again

•No Representation- Americans wanted a say in the government!

•A King- Americans didn’t want another monarchy

What did the Articles of Confederation do?• National Government

• Weak central government- people were afraid a strong NATIONAL gov’t could become an oppressive gov’t

• Power to wage war, make peace, sign treaties, and issue money

• State Governments• Set taxes

• Produce money

• Not treat citizens of other colonies the sam

• Enforce national laws

• Control the western lands (from French and Indian War)

• DEBT from the War• The Articles did nothing to solve the problem of the debt from the war

Weakness-What does the Constitution need?• Give National government powerA weak National Government

• Give Congress power to tax to pay for gov’t services

Congress couldn’t tax citizens

• Create one national currency instead of individual state moniesNo national currency

• 2 Houses of Congress: one based on population (larger states), one with equal amount of representatives (Senate)

One vote per state in Congress

• 3 Branches (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial); system of Checks and Balances to make sure no one gets too much power
