winters; deep ports; fertile lands

- Barley, wheat, oats, rye: The

Economy:
- Deep ports for shipping; trading
resources among the other colonies
Southern ColoniesClimate and Geography:
- Warmest climate: hot, long summers;
lands range from flat coastlines to
elevated mountains
Natural Resources:
- Fertile land to grow cotton, tobacco, rice,
and indigo; trees
Economy:
- Farming/Agriculture- trade among
colonies and overseas; Naval stores
(trees for shipbuilding)

Overview: Why did 13 separate colonies form in the New World? • Groups travelled to America for different reasons: in search of ways to
make money, looking for adventure, or to have religious freedom
• The geography of America’s east coast varied from North to South impacting the type of economics opportunities set up
• Some groups did not agree with the King or the other groups in the colonies so they formed their own colonies and governments
