VOL 29, ISSUE 7 / JULY 2020
SECRETS OF THE DEAD:VIKING WARRIOR QUEENTUE 7TH, 8 P.M.
The two horses buried in the grave
provided further proof of the warrior’s
esteemed military status. But what led
researchers to believe that this mighty
warrior was, in fact, a woman?
Osteo-archaeologist Anna Kjellström
revisits the Swedish History Museum’s
groundbreaking 1975 analysis of the
warrior’s arm and pelvic bones. Geneti-
cists Anders Götherström and Maja
Krzewinska share insights on their 2017
DNA study that provided definitive evi-
dence of the warrior’s gender.
How does the discovery of the first
known female Viking warrior rewrite our
understanding of this mysterious and
fearsome group? What can we learn
about the role of women in Viking society?
“The Viking lifestyle, especially if you
were a warrior, was all about being
remembered,” says Hedenstierna-Jonson.
“I think the warrior buried in Bj 581 would
love that we’re standing here today,
talking about her and her achievements
more than a thousand years later.”
Secrets of the Dead fans can also
enjoy encores of Hannibal in the Alps
(Tue 14th, 8 p.m.) and Egypt’s Darkest
Hour (Wed 15th, 10 p.m.).
Secrets of the Dead: Viking Warrior
Queen will be available to stream beginning
July 7th via the Secrets of the Dead website
(pbs.org/secrets) and the THIRTEEN Explore
app (thirteen.org/explore). Hannibal in the
Alps and Egypt’s Darkest Hour are stream-
ing now. Join the conversation on social
media using the hashtag #SecretsDeadPBS.
´
IN 1878, THE BODY of a great Viking
warrior was found in Birka, Sweden, along
with a huge cache of weapons. For a
century, people assumed the body was
that of a man until the 1970s when a
young researcher observed the bones
had female characteristics. In 2017, a
team of Swedish archaeologists led by
Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson, a spe-
cialist in Viking society in Sweden,
astonished the archaeology world with
a DNA study proving that the great
warrior was a woman. Until then, no one
had ever been able to prove the existence
of a female Viking military leader.
Join Hedenstierna-Jonson and a team
of intrepid archaeologists on a scientific
and historical adventure as they examine
the history-changing DNA of this warrior
and attempt to discover her identity in
Viking Warrior Queen, premiering on
Secrets of the Dead.
The investigation begins in the late
19th century when archaeologist Hjalmar
Stolpe discovered the magnificent burial
chamber of a warrior in Birka during a
largescale excavation. The grave, num-
bered Bj 581, immediately caused a
sensation due to its abundance of
weapons: a shield, knife, bow and arrow,
spear, axe, and sword.
“We would think that during the Viking
Age, there would be weapons in lots of
graves, but there are not, actually. There
are several graves that have a weapon
or two, but the complete set, that’s very,
very unusual,” Hedenstierna-Jonson says
in the film.

When the COVID-19 crisis first hit, upend-
ing our lives in frightening, unprecedented
ways, I knew people would turn to WNET
for answers and inspiration. But how
should WNET respond in a world where
schools were closing, businesses were
shutting down, and the facts about what
was really happening were getting lost
in the noise and the spin?
I jumped into action with the virtuous
team at WNET—even though we had to
work virtually.
We lost use of our studios and control
rooms, so our news teams turned their
living rooms into newsrooms, staying on
the air by devising a new way of using
computers, phones, and laptops to
produce in-depth coverage of the virus
and its impact.
Generations of schoolchildren have
grown up watching us, so we responded
quickly to a new world where school was
out. We changed the schedules to include
special projects for pre-schoolers, class-
room instruction by teachers from
their homes, and an archive of
our programs that are synched
with state education require-
ments. We also used our digital
platforms to share hours of free
learning media for students of
all ages.
With Broadway dark
and performing arts
centers closed, we’re
scheduling marathons
of great plays and per-
formers on THIRTEEN,
WLIW21, and NJTV. Our
newest channel and
online platform, ALL
ARTS, is offering information about arts
organizations, livestreams from new
artists, and diverse content you can’t
find anywhere else. And our most recent
acquisitions—the award-winning news
outlet NJ Spotlight and WLIW-FM, Long
Island’s only NPR radio station—are vital
sources of quality local programming,
news stories, and conversation.
I think these are the times that our
stations were made for—a place for
trusted and inspiring content. I’ve heard
from so many of you who appreciate
what we’re doing. I thank you for your
continuing support. If you’re discovering
new favorite programs on our other
channels for the first time, I say, “Welcome
to our family—again!”
In fact, you’ll be seeing a change to
the name of our family of stations. We
have always served our communities as
individual stations—THIRTEEN, WLIW21,
NJTV, ALL ARTS, CREATE, and WORLD—
but this crisis reminds us that we also
make our biggest impact together, as a
group, on the air and online. So, you’ll
be seeing The WNET Group as a
reminder that all of us are committed
to a stronger future to meet the
challenges of this crisis—and beyond.
We hope you and your loved
ones are well during these chal-
lenging times. We are here for
you. Thank you for being there
for us.
