Does anyone have any medical conditions that put them at risk- if so, what if?
Are multiple crew ready to take over for the skipper in an emergency situation where the skipper is unable to steer the boat
Who has First Aid Training and in what capacity?
• Knowing your resources:
Where is the boat’s first aid kit?
Is it stocked?
Does EVERYONE know where it is?

• This maneuver should be practiced just like tacks, jibes and takedowns
• When to practice?
• Before, between and/or after the racing
• Above all insure that multiple crew are ready to take over if necessary

• This maneuver should be practiced just like tacks, jibes and takedowns
• When to practice?
• Before, between and/or after the racing
• Above all insure that multiple crew are ready to take over if necessary
FIRST AID KITS
Every boat should have a dedicated First Aid Kit
Style is personal choice but minimally should have:
• Wound Treatment/ Bandaging
• Bleeding Control
• Limb Immobilization Resources
All Crew members should minimally know where it is located

Special Items to consider:
• QuickClot- bleeding control dressing
• Sam Splint- Easily modified splint for variety of injuries

ANTICIPATION AND EXECUTION
When is enough enough?• Any serious injury with serious bleeding or deformity
• A loss of consciousness
• Ongoing or serious medical condition:
Including but not limited to:
Heart Attack, Diabetes, Seizure, Loss of sensation to extremities following injury
Reminder to be aware of existing conditions of crew members and if you have them, SHARE with your crewmates!
The severity of the injury or condition dictates whether just sailing in is fast enough, or if you need to radio for a support boat and if serious- call 911 so an ambulance is there when you reach the dock
• A severe injury, including bleeding, medical conditions and head injuries are time sensitive. The Golden Hour is used to demonstrate that in many cases reaching advanced within an hour of the time of the event markedly increases the chances for a good outcome.
EXECUTION
• Take Homes:
• Safety is for EVERYONE, not just the skipper
• Knowing the boat’s resources and capabilities is an important starting point
• Knowing any existing medical conditions for crew members is important for the “What if” moments
• Practicing manuvers like Crew Over Board manuvers should be done regularly
• Every crew member, even newbies should know where the First Aid Kit is located
• If there is a medical emergency or injury, you should be prepared to call it quits
