Walking through the nursery last week and our golden Strelitzia are starting to ower and in the home garden the daodils are in full bloom. All seems a bit early to me, and many nursery folks around the current are saying that demand is coming in a bit earlier than usual. So how does the Daodil know that everyone will be buying early? What is it that drives the sales? We know that there are many things that govern plant growth. However, I am not sure everyone fully understands the drivers. With many plants it has to do with light but not simply day length. With some plants, like lavender it is the total light volume that governs owering. With hops it is day length that controls the growth and they must have a minimum number of hours of daylight for at least a set number of weeks to produce the hops. Other plants it is if the day length is increasing or decreasing and others require equinox to initiate dierent growth stages. As plant propagators these things are not critical for managing the production. Although we need to have the plants ready at the best time for the grower to pot to make sure they get them to the ideal selling size in minimum time. This can be an issue as some plants strike best at a time when it means they come ready at a time that is not ideal for planting/potting. So, like...

Clive’s Comments continued… ...everything it is a compromise.
Then there are temperature issues controlling plant growth. Many plants stop growing at 30°C and others stop at 10°C. We do several garden shows each year and many people come to say they have problem with their Basil – it keeps dying. They never notice that it is when the night temperature drops down to 10°C for more than a few days at a time. Hellebores are classic plants in adding confusion. When we first started importing in-vitro plants we did at the same time as our other varieties not knowing that these new cultivars stop growing at 25°C. Looking into the growth habits of these species it became clear they love it cold.
We have now been importing them for over 10 years and they are all coming in at a time which is able to turn them from tissue culture to flowering plants in the shortest period. The breeders are continually working on newer and better plants although one of their characteristics is flowering time relevant to Christmas. They want them to flower before Christmas as they will get better sales although this has little importance for us. Indeed, with many of these Hellebores they are flowering before the traditional Hellebore season.
What is good about these plants is the improvements of flower colour, length of flowering and flower position. Plants like Cinnamon Snow have large upward facing flowers that occur from mid-winter to mid spring and Ice Breaker Max which has stunning pure white upward flowers. The other exciting innovation is the crossing of many different species and hybrids to move all the genetics around. The new hybrid H. glanforensis is start of a stunning new range called Ice n Roses. These varieties have taken Europe by surprise with their colours and strength.
We as growers and retailers of plants need to understand what governs plant behaviour. It is important for planning and organising plant production, but it is also that we explain this to the gardening public. Many gardeners get disheartened easily and can stop buying plants if they lose too many or the plants do not perform as expected. If they understand the keys to plant growth they will be better able to deal with problems. They will also be better able to buy plants that will suit their environment.
August is here, our birthday month, Chie (Daughter in law), mine, Asa (Granddaughter), Di and my mother all in the next few weeks. For those of you who follow the horoscope it means we have a family of Leos. All adds to the fun of life. I wonder if plants have a horoscope? There are many who believe in gardening by the moon and although I am a cynic about many things, I suspect that there is some veracity in the process. However, it highlights how complex the natural world is and we are trying to control and manage it!
Spring is practically here and officially here soon, and we are all feeling like a big one. It is always a positive time of the year – flowers, sales on the up, footy finals, garden shows and warming weather. What is there to not be happy about. Enjoy the next few months and be happy!
