History. Founded in 1999, the Indoor Tanning Association today represents thousands of indoor tanning manufacturers, distributors, facility owners and members from other support industries. The professional indoor tanning industry employs more than 160,000 people and generates an economic impact of more than $5 billion annually while promoting a responsible message about moderate tanning and sunburn prevention.

Working For You. Building on past campaigns, the ITA will continue momentum in fighting junk science and negative tanning hype. The campaign will target multiple audiences and messages and use the Internet for focused targeting. The campaign would target three distinct audiences: current tanners, state legislators, and the news media, focusing the messages on the following areas:• Junk Science, anti-tanning “hype”• Vitamin D/UV Light Benefits• Responsibility messaging and anti-burn information• Pro-tanning/cosmetic/relaxation• Repealing the Tan TaxCurrent tanning customers are located all over the country so they cannot use geo-targeting to deliver ads specifically to this market. Instead, they will buy online ads on high-profile websites that serve the predominant tanning customer demographic. They would utilize sites like: Myspace.com, Facebook.com, Cosmopolitan.com, Style.com/Vogue, Elle.com, MensHealth.com and Glamour.com. They would also use opposition tactics to push stories and messages to the media that reduced the credibility of anti-tanning activists. Using issues like Botox and other financial motivations they would encourage the media to examine this hypocrisy when it comes to their views on tanning.
