The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s 89th season, and my seventhas Music Director, was one of many highlights and personalfavourites.

We welcomed classical music’s biggest stars here in Toronto andon our tours. The TSO was joined by Lang Lang, Renée Fleming,Joshua Bell, Dame Evelyn Glennie, and Yuja Wang as well asrenowned conductors James Conlon, Stéphane Denève, andNicholas McGegan. We were fortunate to perform the works ofgreat contemporary composers including John Adams, Tan Dun,and Canadian R. Murray Schafer.

The 2010/2011 season was an exciting year of touring for theOrchestra. It was thrilling to lead the orchestra on its annualNorthern Residency Tour to North Bay and Timmins, then toOttawa and Montreal, as well as on two tours to the UnitedStates. The first, a six city tour of the leading venues in Floridawith fellow Canadian and friend, violinist James Ehnes, and thesecond, a triumphant return to Carnegie Hall with the great ItzhakPerlman where he performed Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

The season included programmes that allowed us to focus onspecific works and composers. Along with the annual Mozart andNew Creations Festivals, we celebrated the 150th anniversary ofthe birth of Gustav Mahler by opening the season with hisSymphony No. 2, “Resurrection” and closing the MasterworksSeries in June with his Symphony No. 5 in a most memorable“Late Night” concert presentation. In October 2010, wecommemorated the 100th birthday of American composerSamuel Barber. The all-Barber programme was a wonderful wayto draw attention to Barber’s special creative genius. The seasonalso introduced the Exposed series – three concerts that allowedthe orchestra and the audience to explore what makes orchestralmasterpieces just that.

For making such a wonderful season of music possible, I thankthe members of the administrative staff and the orchestra fortheir hard work and dedication, and the audience members andsupporters of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The enthusiasticpresence of our patrons in the hall, and the support providedbehind the scenes, truly brings the music to life.

Sincerely,

Peter OundjianMUSIC DIRECTOR

from our music director

“Peter Oundjian chose this heaven-storming symphony

to open his seventh season as TSO Music Director, and

delivered the most satisfying performance I’ve ever

heard from him with this fine orchestra. He did so,

paradoxically, by countering Mahler’s restlessness with

patience. He let each turn in the symphony’s convoluted

progress have a full opportunity to weigh on our

consciousness. He reminded us, in the best possible way,

that large truths in music often hide in the small details.”

president &ceo’s message

In the 2010/2011 season, the TSO enriched and served thecommunity with a full range of concert programming. In addition tothe 107 public performances presented by the TSO, the Orchestraalso performed 11 performances on tour — bringing the musicalexcellence of the TSO to Ottawa, Montreal, the USA including a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall. Performances at home andout-of-town were met with much critical acclaim.

Highly effective cost control along with a fully subscribed matchinggift campaign in June, led by a challenge gift from the TorontoSymphony Foundation and Board member Bob Corcoran, resulted inthe sixth consecutive year of better-than-budget operations for theTSO and a modest operating surplus. The TSO thanks our keygovernment funders as contributors to this success: The CanadaCouncil for the Arts; the Ontario Arts Council; the Ontario TrilliumFoundation; and the City of Toronto for their critically importantfunding. The TSO also thanks Roy Thomson Hall, the CBC, and theToronto Musicians’ Association as our partners in enriching thecommunity with outstanding performances of great orchestral music.

The TSO’s Board of Directors, chaired by Allan Kimberley, isapplauded for their leadership, guidance, and commitment to theorganization and to the endurance of the arts in Toronto. Theadministrative staff is commended for their tireless efforts to ensurethat the TSO fulfils its mandate and provides innovative programmingand outreach initiatives to the community as efficiently as possible.

Special thanks to Music Director Peter Oundjian and the musiciansof the Orchestra whose wonderful music inspires us all.

Toronto’s Biggest MessiahIn December 2010, the TSO premièred TSO Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis’s grand, new orchestration of Handel’sMessiah. Toronto’s biggest Messiah was also Toronto’s most attended Messiah. The TSO’s annual holiday performances reacheda record number of patrons, welcoming over 11,300 audience members over five performances, and averaging more than 96%capacity at each concert.

“Davis has reminded us of how rich Messiah is, and how handsomely it accommodates the symphonic embrace thatit has been denied for decades.”ARTHUR KAPTAINIS, NATIONAL POST, DECEMBER 15, 2010

“Davis’s re-orchestrations are not only light-footed but, in their way, illuminating. The result is a frisky, fresh-faced Messiah which should recommend itself to symphonic organizations and choral societies well beyondthe Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Mendelssohn Choir who breathed such life into it Thursday.”KEN WINTERS, THE GLOBE AND MAIL, DECEMBER 17, 2010

Exposed: Unveiling Great Music After a successful pilot performance of the “Beyond the Score”® programme in the 2009/2010 season, the TSO launched theseries, Exposed: Unveiling Great Music, devoted to enhancing the experience and appreciation of great orchestral music. Theseprogrammes feature an exploration of a major piece of repertoire in the first half, and a complete performance in the second.

In the 2010/2011 season, the first concert of the Exposed series featured Peter Oundjian’s examination of Brahms’s SymphonyNo. 3, exploring why it is considered artistically to be “the most perfect of symphonies”. The second concert had CBC Radiopersonality Tom Allen, noted actor Colm Feore, and conductor Vasily Petrenko onstage where they brought to life the music ofStravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and the stories behind its creation. The final concert featured conductor Rob Kapilowdemonstrating the extraordinary genius of Beethoven in his Symphony No. 1.

“I’m a sports fan as much as I am a music fan – and what gives me enjoyment as a spectator is knowing how thegame is played. The “Exposed” series aims to do just that – provide the understanding and colour commentaryto great works of music, which adds to the enjoyment and appreciation of the work.” MUSIC DIRECTOR, PETER OUNDJIAN

ToursThe Toronto Symphony Orchestra significantly increased its out-of-town and international activities with a total of elevenperformances outside of Toronto. The sixth annual Northern Residency brought Music Director Peter Oundjian and the Orchestrato North Bay and Timmins where they performed a public concert in each community as well as several education programmes.

The TSO’s and the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s (NACO) annual exchange brought the TSO to Ottawa in November 2010,and NACO to Toronto in February 2011. In addition to traveling to Ottawa in November, the TSO continued on for a performanceat Montreal’s Place des Arts.

In January, the TSO began its international touring with a critically acclaimed six-city tour of Florida. Music Director PeterOundjian led the orchestra in a programme that included Canadian composer Gary Kulesha’s Torque, Barber’s Concerto forViolin and Orchestra (with Canadian guest artist James Ehnes), and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

“Crisp, clean and refined, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Peter Oundjian made a memorableimpression in their Sarasota appearance, part of a statewide tour by surely Canada's finest orchestra.”THE SARASOTA HERALD TRIBUNE, JANUARY 11, 2011

“[The TSO] is a great Canadian treasure, a great Canadian export.” PETER VAN LOAN, CANADA’S MINISTER OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE, TORONTO STAR, JANUARY 21, 2011

On March 26, 2011, the Orchestra made its highly anticipated return to Carnegie Hall in a sold-out performance that receivedaccolades from the public and critics. The programme was made up of Britten’s “Four Sea Interludes” from Peter Grimes,Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 featuring violinist Itzhak Perlman, Canadian composer John Estacio’s Frenergy, and VaughanWilliams’s Symphony No. 4.

“On Saturday evening at Carnegie Hall the results of Mr. Oundjian’s careful work were clear. The orchestra soundedbright and confident...In the opener, Britten’s “Four Sea Interludes” from “Peter Grimes” ... the playing was litheand sensuous, particularly in the strings, which brought surging lyricism to the great “Moonlight” interlude. Thetransitions of mood between sections were seamless; there was ominous urgency even in quiet passages.”ZACHARY WOOLFE, NEW YORK TIMES, MARCH 28, 2011

FestivalsTSO Music Director Peter Oundjian’s festival programming gives the audiences a deeper understanding of the works of a specificcomposer or group of composers, geographical area, or time period. The first festival of the season, the Slavic Festival, highlighting the works of Dvořàk, Chopin, Janàček, and Stravinsky with guest artists Colin Carr, cello, and pianist Natasha Paremski.

The Mozart@255 Festival, a celebration of the prolific composer Mozart, is a perennial audience favourite. Mozart@255featured Canadian violinist James Ehnes performing and leading the Orchestra in the five Mozart Violin Concerti as well as hisRondo for Violin and Orchestra. Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux joined the TSO to present a selection of Mozart’s mostfamous arias, and pianist Jeffrey Kahane performed two concertos: No. 9 (the “Jeunehomme”) and No. 17.

The seventh annual New Creations Festival, the TSO’s annual celebration of new music, brought music from today’s top Canadianand American composers. The Festival included two world premières, Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer’s Symphony No. 1,a TSO commission, and Jennifer Higdon’s On a Wire, a TSO co-commission, written specifically for the eighth blackbird ensemble. Two American composers joined the TSO onstage, Electronica composer Mason Bates performed with the TSO in the Canadianpremière of his work Liquid Interface, and world-famous American composer John Adams made his TSO conducting debut inthe Canadian première of his piece City Noir, and the performance of his extraordinary work Harmonielehre.

The celebratory spirit of the Festival extended beyond the concert stage, encompassing all of Roy Thomson Hall. Pre-concertperformances in the lobbies featured artists Lightning Drum, Gryphon Trio, and the eighth blackbird ensemble, and post-concertaudience-wide parties were enhanced by the music of Mason Bates’s DJ alter-ego – DJ Masonic, the Roberto OcchipintiEnsemble, and Le Vent du Nord. Audience members also had the opportunity to hear from the composers themselves duringintermission composer chats.

“The north lobby of Roy Thomson Hall seemed the hot place to be in this city on Wednesday night. And how oftencan you say that of a nondescript passageway in a symphony hall, anywhere?... For now it is enough to point tothe orchestra’s signal success in the handling of contemporary music. Where many relegate new music to ghettosor try to inject small doses of it medicinally into the mainstream, the Toronto Symphony has, from the beginningof Mr. Oundjian’s tenure, celebrated it and created excitement around it in the New Creations Festival.”JAMES R. OESTREICH, NEW YORK TIMES, MARCH 4, 2011

Many composers who live in the same generation produce extremely different works. The Rachmaninoff and the ImpressionistsFestival examined the expressive works of Sergei Rachmaninoff against the serene music of the French Impressionists tobetter illuminate their contrasting styles. The Festival featured three pianists: Yuja Wang performing Rachmaninoff’s PianoConcerto No. 3, Gabriela Montero in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Ilya Poletaev performing Russiancomposer Nikolai Medtner’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

“What I enjoy about festival programming is that, in the same way a museum brings a collection from elsewhere,it allows us to examine cultures and their artefacts more deeply.” MUSIC DIRECTOR PETER OUNDJIAN

TSO Goes Late NightNight time is the right time for young audiences to discover the symphony. The TSO’s popular late-night concert featured aperformance at 10:30 p.m. of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, and the TSO’s Young Leadership Council hosted a pre-concert tailgateparty, the first-ever event to be held in the Roy Thomson Hall parking lot!

“…some orchestras are doing it right …As a result of [the TSO’s] hard work, going to the symphonyhas become a normal thing to do for under 35s in Toronto, and has even become a popular date-nightactivity.”MARCIA ADAIR, LOS ANGELES TIMES, JUNE 30, 2011

tsoLIVE RecordingIn March 2011, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra released its fifth recording on its own record label “tsoLIVE”: Holst’sThe Planets.

“This fifth release featuring music director Peter Oundjian is a crisp, clean and gorgeously balancedreading of the seven-movement orchestral suite The Planets”. JOHN TERAUDS, THE TORONTO STAR, MARCH 22, 2011

Featured TSO MusiciansThe TSO has an esteemed roster of 88 musicians, ten of whom were showcased as soloists throughout the 2010/2011 season.

On November 10 and 11, 2010, Principal Viola Teng Li performed contemporary Czech composer Krystof Maratka’s Astophonia, opening the TSO’s Slavic Celebration. Principal Cello Joseph Johnson performed Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1 on thesame programme that featured Associate Concertmaster Mark Skazinetsky, Assistant Concertmaster Marc-André Savoie,Assistant Concertmaster Etsuko Kimura, and Principal Second Violin Paul Meyer performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violinswith guest conductor Nicholas McGegan on November 24 and 25, 2010.

Principal Oboe Sarah Jeffrey and Principal Double Bass Jeffrey Beecher headlined a programme during the Mozart@255Festival. Sarah performed Mozart’s Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra and Jeffrey Vanhal’s Concerto for Double Bass andOrchestra. Saint-Saëns’s grand Symphony No. 3, the “Organ Symphony”, highlighted TSO Principal Keyboard Patricia Krueger.Principal Clarinet Joaquin Valdepeñas was a soloist during the Rachmaninoff and the Impressionists Festival, performingDebussy’s Première rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra.

“Thank you TSO, for sharing your wonderful music with us. Ilove the elaborate sounds of the classical instruments. I amvery proud that your orchestra is part of Canada. The musicsounded like the actual composers. Thank you very much.”BLAKE, ST. HUBERT CATHOLIC SCHOOL, NORTH BAY, ON

“….I was amazed at how good [the TSO] was, but myfavourite instrument was the trombone. It is cool and theydid a wonderful job. I think everyone liked it and they mustpractice a lot, like since they were nine, to be that good!MORGAN, NORTHEASTERN CATHOLIC SCHOOL, TIMMINS, ON

Enriching the Community During the 2010/2011 season, the TSO continued its tradition of providingextensive curriculum-based education programmes and performances, enhancing the learning experiences of young people throughout Toronto. The TSO presented 23 Student Concerts at Roy Thomson Hall with over48,000 young people in attendance. “Mornings with the TSO” brought anadditional 2,000 high school music students to the hall to experience aprofessional orchestra in rehearsal.

TSO musicians also took educational initiatives into the classroom, directly interacting with the students by demonstrating their instrumentsthrough the “Preludes” programme, as well as helping with young peopleto write their own piece of music through the “Adopt-A-Player”programme. More than 12,000 young people in the GTA participated inthese unique programmes.

“Thank you so much for such a wonderful afternoon of musicand entertainment last week. My students and I thoroughlyenjoyed the performance. We are very grateful that the TSOoffers subsidized tickets as our students are very unlikely togo to the symphony otherwise. Thank you again for such a rareand very appreciated experience.” LAURA WINSTON, GR. 3 & 4 TEACHER, J.R. WILCOx COMMUNITY SCHOOL, YORK, ON

Under the leadership of President Heather Oda, in partnership witha dedicated Board and 220 members, the TSVC increased their giftto the TSO by more than $60,000 over the 2009/2010 season witha total gift of $193,000. This gift was a result of successfulfundraising events held by the TSVC throughout the year.

The Fine Wine Auction marked its 20th anniversary and was a greatsuccess. Generously hosted by CIBC, bidding was active and therevenue goal was surpassed. To further celebrate 20 years of theFine Wine Auction, a second event was held – An Evening withChâteau Margaux – with owner Corinne Mentzelopoulos (abenefactor of the very first Fine Wine event) present.

The TSVC gift supports TSO operations, education activities, andthe Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. The TSVC has alsoendowed two orchestra chair positions – the Toronto SymphonyVolunteer Committee Principal Trumpet Chair and the TorontoSymphony Volunteer Committee Principal Flute Chair.

The TSVC is dedicated to supporting the Toronto SymphonyOrchestra by expanding awareness of its concert and educationprogrammes within the community and beyond.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra is fortunate to have many loyal andgenerous supporters. Once again, Friends and Maestro’s Club donorsincreased their support over the previous year and the number ofMaestro’s Club donors increased. Despite challenging economicconditions, the number of donors to the TSO remained stable at almost6,500 for the 2010/2011 fiscal year.

A growing number of donors are choosing to include the TSO in theirestate plans, and each year the support received from bequests increases.Legacy Giving ensures the Orchestra’s future stability and growth, guaranteeing that its musical excellence will be available for futuregenerations. Thanks to a generous $300,000 challenge gift from theToronto Symphony Foundation, along with $50,000 from Board memberBob Corcoran, the TSO was able to raise an additional $700,000 foroperations before the fiscal year end. That significantly contributed to theorganization’s financial success. Together with the support of individuals, corporations, and foundations, the TSO annual campaign raised almost$5.3 million.

Looking to the future, a new volunteer leadership and donor community, the Young Leadership Council, launched during 2010/2011. The youngprofessionals who are part of this growing group are actively creating thefuture of the TSO and bringing dynamic influence to Toronto’s arts scene.

The continued philanthropic support of the TSO’s generous donorsillustrates the important role that the TSO plays in the cultural fabric ofToronto. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra thanks its committed donorsfor their loyal and dedicated support of live orchestral music in our greatcity.
