Term 1 Week 2 Friday 02 Feb, 2018
Welcome back to all of our past students and families— and of course a warm welcome to our
new Year 7 students and their families. We also have a range of new students from Years 8 –
12 who have come from across the State to attend Tully SHS – a warm welcome to them as
well. Finally, we have several new staff and we look forward to them making our district their
home for some time to come. Students looked excellent in their uniform on Day 1: a reminder
to parents that students should, if possible, wear their house shirts on a Wednesday.
All students attended their first 2018 parade conducted by our new school captains and, after initial
introductions, were in classes by 9:30am. Our current student population is 711.
Communication
This newsletter is produced around every two weeks. It is an excellent way to keep abreast of the many
events and activities that occur at our school. It is delivered primarily online so it is essential that your email
address is up to date to receive not only the newsletter but also other important information. Any changes
in contact details can be communicated by calling the school on 40684555 or by emailing to
[email protected]. Hard copies of the newsletter are also available and held at the front desk if you
wish to collect one of these.
Early each week the school also sends out a ‘snapshot’ via email. This is a brief summary of items that are
read out to students each day in class and provide parents with an idea of the latest activities and reminders
being given to students.
Attending our P&C meetings is an excellent way of keeping informed of what is occurring at school and also
gives an avenue for parents to influence school directions. These are held in the library on the third Tuesday
of the month commencing at 3:30pm. The first meeting for 2018 will be on Tuesday the 20 February.
Australia Day
I attended the Australia Day celebrations recently in Cardwell and met up
with many of our students. It was wonderful to see many of our students
being recognised for their endeavours across a range of fields.
Our very own 2017 school captain Jane Slater won the very prestigious
Young Citizen of the Year award. Congratulations to Jane for a much
deserved award; this is indeed a great honour. Our 2017 School Dux, Josh
Marsh, received the Excellence and Innovation Award. Josh has been
working with CSIRO in Canberra and is keen to continue his science pursuits
after having experienced Science at MIT Boston, USA, in 2017.
It is just as important to identify other students who were nominated on the
day. Flynn Rowe was recognised for his tremendous efforts in the sport of Outrigging, while Andrew Brunello
was recognised for his sporting achievements in the Athletics field. Byron Dibella was nominated at the
awards in recognition of his continuing achievements in the music field.
A final congratulations to Mission Beach State School who received the Young Sustainable Environment
Award. Many of you would be aware of the large number of projects that Mission Beach has at the school
fostering young people to contribute to a sustainable future.
5 Success for 2017 Graduates
Tully State High School student Joshka Marsh achieved the best result of an OP 1.
This finished a rewarding academic year in 2017 for Josh after he was honoured
with Senior Dux at Tully State High School Speech Night. Josh has chosen work in
the Science field in Canberra this year.
Riley McDermott’s hard work achieved an OP4. Riley is moving to Sydney
to undertake a Bachelor of Advanced Science at Macquarie University.
The top five students included three girls with an OP5 – Chloe Harris, Grace Mackay
and Mia Orlandi. Chloe is moving to the Sunshine Coast to undertake a Bachelor of
Nutrition and Dietetics with Sunshine Coast University. Grace is enrolled with
Macquarie University to study Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts
(majoring in Journalism and Non-fiction writing). Mia has accepted an offer by Melbourne
University in Bachelor of Arts – media communication. Mia also received a Certificate of
Academic Commendation for attaining Very High Achievement (VHA) in six authority subjects
over 24 semesters. She was one of only 953 Queensland 2017 Year 12 graduates to receive this
accolade.
Tully High students did exceptionally well. Of the 38 Year 12 OP eligible students, 39 per cent of
students received an OP in the 1-10 range. All students who applied to QTAC were offered a
university course. A number of students have accepted offers with interstate universities and
some are taking a gap year from studying and opting for work and/or travel.
Some Year 12 students have secured apprenticeships and have already started their new
vocational pathways. Other students have paid employment in the local community: it is rewarding
knowing they are transitioning to the world of work.
Tully SHS achieved 100% QCE / QCIA attainment— a testament to the quality educational
opportunities provided to our students.

A very big welcome is extended to our Year 7 students and parents/guardians who have
made Tully State High School the next stage in their schooling. It was a pleasure to meet
with parents and guardians at the Year 7 meet and greet BBQ last week. I encourage all
parents and guardians to feel welcome and continue to be an active part of their child’s
education.
It was very pleasing to see our Year 8 and Year 9 students return to school and display the
four pillars of being safe, being respectful, being responsible and being learners. As I have
met with staff and students and visited classrooms, it has been very satisfying to see so
many students actively engaged and learning. What a positive start to the year!
With high expectations being set by teachers for attendance, effort and behaviour,
students in the Junior Secondary will have no choice but to set their own personal goals
and aim high! I truly believe that EVERY student has the opportunity to succeed in
whatever they put their minds to if they commit to the motto that Every
Day Counts and to never give up even when things get tough — always
have a go.
To support your child in their secondary education, the Junior Secondary
teaching team is ably led by Mrs Danielle Furmage, our Head of Junior
Secondary and our three Year Co-ordinators;
Year 7 Leandra Willis [email protected] Year 8 Mark Dressler [email protected]
Year 9 Natasha Pather [email protected]
Please feel free to contact our year co-ordinators, Mrs Furmage or myself if you have any
concerns or questions regarding your child’s education at Tully State High School.
I look forward to a productive year where EVERY student has success along their individual
pathways to becoming a respectful and resilient member of our Tully community.

Year 7 @ TSHS
It’s wonderful to see how well the Year 7 students of 2018 have settled into high school life. Already, new
friendships have been formed and enthusiasm for learning is very obvious. My role as Year Level
Coordinator has allowed me to meet an amazing array of individuals both in class and the playground. They
have shown bravery, independence and initiative, which are all attributes that will continue to grow as the
year progresses. With our camp quickly approaching, excitement levels will begin to elevate as students
prepare to build on other skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship and relationship building.
I asked some students what their first two weeks were like:
If this is the response after two weeks, the rest of the year should be fabulous.
Leandra Willis Year 7 Coordinator
“I was really nervous before the term began but all of my new teachers
and classmates have made the first two weeks some of the most
memorable and unforgettable weeks of my life.” Arianna Hyytinen
“It was like a maze at first and hard to find classes bit
I quickly got the hang of it and it has become a lot of
fun.” Blake Morice
“The first two weeks were amazing;
especially in Science where we used Bunsen
burners to boil water.” Wasik Ajmain
Hello, my name is Devan van Vliet, and I was made in
Canada. I grew up on a tree farm, where I raised saplings, bailed hay, fished, rode dirt bikes, and enjoyed the serenity of
the rural lifestyle. After several years of growing up in the small town of Uxbridge, Ontario, I spread my roots to the
great big city.
My journey began at the University of Hamilton, where I
completed my four-year degree in Geography and Environmental Science. Near the end of my degree, I knew it
was time, time to take on an even bigger adventure. This is when I decided to fly to Australia. I spent a year on the
Sunshine Coast before moving up to Tully. I am extremely excited to join the community, and re-kindle my bond with the
rural lifestyle. You will most likely see me running, chilling in some air-conditioned unit, or attempting to catch a wave.
High-ho!
My name is Kazz Maunder and I am delighted to be teaching
at Tully SHS this year. I was born and raised in Cairns but
moved away to Brisbane for University. At UQ I went the
distance and earned a dual bachelors in Secondary
Educations and Arts (History/Drama). However, after
graduating, I saw the light, and decided to move and work
closer to Home. Moving to Tully has opened my eyes to a
whole new world and those in the community have made me
feel the love (tonight). I love pop culture, TV, Movies and
Musical Theatre. I’m a huge fan of Disney, and that’s why this
bio introducing me is full of Disney song titles. So please, no
matter where ever you are if you see me come and say
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Hello, my name is Maya Sidhu.
I previously lived on the Gold Coast for 15 years. I then
completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science and worked at Runaway Bay Sports and Leadership Excellence
Centre as a camp instructor. I also worked for a company called UUP that travelled to local schools on the Gold Coast
and Brisbane to deliver wellbeing and leadership presentations and activities. I then realised that I had a
passion for working with youth and decided to do my Graduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching. My first
teaching appointment was at Robina SHS teaching HPE and Science. After a year there I decided that I would like
to teach up in far North QLD. Tully was my number one.
My name is Molly McNamara. I completed my Bachelor Degree of Exercise Physiology at JCU in Townsville. Following university, I worked in Rockhampton and then Cairns as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist where I prescribed suitable exercise to individuals with chronic disease and worked with high performing individuals. In 2017 I studied my Graduate Diploma of Education and now I am excited to start the year as a HPE teacher at Tully High.
Michael Anderson.
Tully High is a great school and I am very happy to have returned. During my extended absence from
Tully, I was working in the isolated but picturesque communities of Lockhart River and Pormpuraaw. This
was a valuable experience that taught me many lessons about resilience and striving for
success. These are qualities that I am very keen to
help continue developing in the students at Tully High.
This year as Head of Engagement and Well-being I will be leading a dedicated team of teachers and
support staff to lift educational outcomes for all students. A major focus of my work will be
continuing the excellent platform put in place with ‘Positive Behaviours for Learning’. The school is
comprised of wonderful students; young Queenslanders who follow our rules of being safe,
responsible, respectful learners. I am looking forward to a fabulous year in 2018.
My name is Cassandra Ketchell and I am a Tully local who has returned home after ten years away. I am currently in my third year of teaching and am very proud to have returned to my home town as a teacher. A former
student of Tully High, I completed my Teaching degree after working for seven years in high schools as a Teacher Aide. I have taught in Townsville and Thursday Island.
I look forward to teaching at Tully High.
Northern Pride partner
with Tully SHS The Rugby League development classes now have the
support of the Northern Pride as we continue to produce
outstanding members of the local, regional, state and
national rugby league community. Students enrolled will
have the support of current Pride U20s coach David
Scott, mentoring them both on the field and in the
classroom, as well as Todd Carney, current Pride player
and former Dally M Player of the Year (NRL), conducting
field sessions and giving valuable insights into life as a
professional footballer.
Technology and literacy Junior English classes have access to two platforms this year to enhance their reading comprehension and facility with the
English language. Year 7s have access to Word Flyers and Education Perfect, and Year 8 students have weekly access
to computer rooms for using the Education Perfect resources to develop and extend their skills. Comments from students
so far include:
Melody S “Education Perfect was great because I found it
really helpful and it was set out really well so I could understand what to do.”
Max P “I learnt something.”
Sarah C “It was helpful because we can get a different type
of learning to make things fun and interesting.”
I invite you to explore that platform with your child at home.
Explicit teaching of reading strategies continues in Years 7 – 9. Year 7 students are using the Alison Davis reading
program, Year 8 students are being explicitly taught once a week by the Master Teacher/ English HOD team teaching with the classroom teacher, and Year 9s are using their CARS
and STARS resources from last year to review particular reading strategies.
The importance of modelling reading for your children, reading at home and valuing
reading cannot be overstated.
Happy reading.

Studies
Hygiene is an important
component of Food Studies.
Year 7 students participated
in an activity demonstrating
cross-contamination. This
involved passing a ball
contaminated with glitter
powder. Students then
observed their contaminated
hands with an ultra violet
light.

Wellbeing
Strengths are an integral part of our Wellbeing Program. All of us, at our very core, have our own
set of strengths. These strengths play an important role in our daily lives. Usually we feel
energised and satisfied when we use our own strengths. Research shows that our greatest
successes are the result of us using our strengths.
This year, we are going to have a fortnightly focus strength. Here are the strengths the students
will be investigating this term.
Our overall theme for the term in Wellbeing is Choose Kindness

Clare Lowe:
Selected to attend University Of Queensland’s Young Scholars
Program which was run over a five-day Residential Camp at the St
Lucia Campus. Claire was given invaluable insight into university life
and fields of study that have ignited her passion to attend university.
While attending the program Claire was able to network with other
students and was mentored by current UQ students.
Congratulations to Michael Morgan and
Alannah Franich, who were successful in
their applications to attend the National
Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12
program. Both students were given the
opportunity to participate in the
residential program (Michael – Canberra,
Alannah – Brisbane) that allowed their
passion for Science to flourish. The
program was extremely extensive: it gave
the students the chance to network and
develop a better understanding of the
diverse study and career options available
in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Maths.
