The Small Ship AdventureCompany and Alaska Bound wereestablished by Maryann Andersonwho went into business in 1999as Australia’s first exclusivelyAlaska specialist wholesaler. Anderson will retire from theindustry, but her daughterSuzannah Cowley will continuewith the company as Sales andMarketing Director. Kay told TD the opportunityarose at the end of 2011 and
after examining the deal it wasclear there were significantsynergies between the businesses. “It gives us an entry into Alaskaas well as cruising,” she said. “We are very excited about theopportunity to help continue tobuild the dream that Maryannbegan in 1999. The move sees the continuationof the carrier’s bid to attract morehigh-yielding passengers to itstarget base. “It’s all about bringing choiceback to the business traveller,’ LizSavage, Group Executive ofCommercial told TD on one of thefirst flights from Sydney toBrisbane this morning. Virgin rolls out red carpetTravelManagers up TRAVELMANAGERS says it’sclearly outperforming the widertravel market, after recording a49.4% rise in int’l tickets issuedfor for the year to Jun 2011. That compared to a rise of just9.9% in outbound passengernumbers, while the home-basednetwork also reported a 39.4%increase in cruise sales, whilecommissions rose 44.2%. Chief executive Joe Araullo saidthe results show that theTravelManagers business model is“sustaining strong growth” byattracting high-achievingconsultants and equipping themwith excellent technology and on-the ground support in each state. Araullo said TravelManagerswas still growing, targeting newmembers in the NT, Tas and WA.
Vacations Middle East AUSTRALIAN consumer travelpublication Vacations & Travel,owned by Global Publishing, hasannounced a new licenseagreement with a firm calledLulua Publishing House which willsee the magazine’s contentreproduced in Arabic for a MiddleEastern audience. “This is a significant andextremely exciting developmentfor Global Publishing,” saidpublisher Anthony Gallagher, whosaid the deal was “the first ofmany steps we’ll be taking toreach new markets in 2012”. Travelogix offline WHOLESALE travel softwareprovider Travelogix is set to ceasetrading, just six months after thebusiness was taken over by PRSoftware (TD 15 Aug 2010). Travelogix ceo Tom Gleeson hasconfirmed the move, and thecompany’s website is now offline. Gleeson was appointed by thecompany last year to turn itaround, but the owners have nowdecided to close the business. Formerly known as Travel Whoand TWT Technologies, the sale ofthe operation in Jun came amiddisputes between shareholdersincluding Gary Gelenter, DavidLanning and former Qantas groupgm of sales and distribution,Peter Kelly. At the time of the sale last yearPR Software said the acquisitionhad put the Travelogix businessinto a “much better position, witha new focus on growth andprofitability.”

QUEENSLAND tourism ministerJan Jarratt yesterday announced aformal review of “tour deskcommission fees,” with theminister saying she’s respondingto concerns raised by industrystakeholders. “I believe it’s necessary toobjectively assess the impacts ofcommission structures on thetourism industry, having receivedfeedback that some commissionrates might be excessively high ornot good value for money”. Jarratt said that after battlingthrough the spate of disasters in2011, “the war isn’t over yet and Iwant to make sure our operatorsaren’t being disadvantaged”. Terms of reference for theprobe have been developed in
conjunction with the QueenslandTourism Industry Council and theinvestigation will be headed up byIan Kean. Two rounds of community andindustry consultation will takeplace, with an issues paper to bereleased in Mar and furtherconsultation thereafter. The review was welcomed byCol McKenzie, ceo of the Assn. ofMarine Park Tourism Operators,who said that tour deskcommissions “eat at the profitmargins of tourism businesses,which can put the viability ofsome businesses at risk”.

The vibrant Wunula Dreamingartwork had graced the QF 747for nearly two decades. “The paint scheme fromBalaringi Studio had reached theend of its life and the aircraft hasbeen restored to a standardQantas livery,” a QF spokesmantold Travel Daily today. “We will unveil a newindigenous livery on a differentaircraft by the end of 2012 andthe Yananyi Dreaming aircraft - aBoeing 737 by Balarinji & CentralAustralian artist Rene Kulitja -continues to fly,” Qantas said.

Key Responsibilities
The position is responsible for ensuring sales and marketingstrategies and plans are aligned and implemented effectively withcorporate objectives and priorities. Qualifications
• Minimum 10 years at a senior management position with sales and marketing responsibilities.• Impassioned advocate of strategic planning and innovative thinking.• Proven record of producing results and consistently meeting or exceeding business goals.• Proven success in leadership, people management and development, with mentoring and team building skills.• Ability to work and lead in a dynamic and multicultural environment.• Excellent communication and presentation skills• Airline or related industry experience clearly an advantage.• Tertiary education qualification.

WestJet turboprops CALGARY based carrier WestJethas confirmed plans to create anew regional division after thepurchase of 40 turboprops, adecision that will break awayfrom its single fleet strategy. The move is estimated to costbetween $800m to $1billion. CEO Gregg Saretsky said themove would give the carrier theopportunity to “out manoeuvreAir Canada and its regionalaffiliates”. The turboprops will enable WSto expand services to Cranbrook,Prince Rupert, Fort St. John andDawson Creek in BC; Lethbridge,in Alberta; Brandon & Thompsonin Manitoba; Saguenay, Quebec;and Dudbury, Sarnia and Timminsin Ontario. MEANWHILE, Westjet and Deltawill expand their interline deal toa codeshare alliance on domestic& int’l routes beginning 23 Jan. The first phase of the deal willsee the DL code placed on WSmetal on 24 routes, includingVancouver to both Las Vegas andHonolulu. Westjet will in turn see its codeadded to DL flights on five trans-border routes, mostly from Detroit.
