ASIA-PACIFIC Travel Marketing Services has expanded its portfolio this week with the purchase of The Small Ship Adventure Company, as well as sister company Alaska Bound. APTMS is headed up by well- known industry personality Kylee Kay, who was appointed md of the business just over two years ago (TD 09 Dec 2009). The Small Ship Adventure Company and Alaska Bound were established by Maryann Anderson who went into business in 1999 as Australia’s first exclusively Alaska specialist wholesaler. Anderson will retire from the industry, but her daughter Suzannah Cowley will continue with the company as Sales and Marketing Director. Kay told TD the opportunity arose at the end of 2011 and after examining the deal it was clear there were significant synergies between the businesses. “It gives us an entry into Alaska as well as cruising,” she said. “We are very excited about the opportunity to help continue to build the dream that Maryann began in 1999. We feel that we are well placed for greater product offering, equally excellent service and growth in the North American and global arenas with products such as Zegrahm Expeditions and Alaska Dream,” Kay added. The move expands the APTMS portfolio which also includes Alamo Car Rental, Aston Hotels and Resorts, VIA Rail Canada and Indian operator Peirce & Leslie.

VIRGIN Australia has todayimplemented its new businessclass product on its Boeing 737narrow-body domestic fleetnationwide (TD 07 Nov). The move sees the continuationof the carrier’s bid to attract morehigh-yielding passengers to itstarget base. “It’s all about bringing choiceback to the business traveller,’ LizSavage, Group Executive ofCommercial told TD on one of thefirst flights from Sydney toBrisbane this morning. She said Virgin Australiabusiness travellers will see a new,contemporary fresh product. That compared to a rise of just9.9% in outbound passengernumbers, while the home-basednetwork also reported a 39.4%increase in cruise sales, whilecommissions rose 44.2%. Chief executive Joe Araullo saidthe results show that theTravelManagers business model is“sustaining strong growth” byattracting high-achievingconsultants and equipping themwith excellent technology and on-the ground support in each state. Vacations Middle East AUSTRALIAN consumer travelpublication Vacations & Travel,owned by Global Publishing, hasannounced a new licenseagreement with a firm calledLulua Publishing House which willsee the magazine’s contentreproduced in Arabic for a MiddleEastern audience. “This is a significant andextremely exciting developmentfor Global Publishing,” saidpublisher Anthony Gallagher, whosaid the deal was “the first ofmany steps we’ll be taking toreach new markets in 2012”. Travelogix offline WHOLESALE travel softwareprovider Travelogix is set to ceasetrading, just six months after thebusiness was taken over by PRSoftware (TD 15 Aug 2010). Travelogix ceo Tom Gleeson hasconfirmed the move, and thecompany’s website is now offline. Gleeson was appointed by thecompany last year to turn itaround, but the owners have nowdecided to close the business. Formerly known as Travel Whoand TWT Technologies, the sale ofthe operation in Jun came amiddisputes between shareholdersincluding Gary Gelenter, DavidLanning and former Qantas groupgm of sales and distribution,Peter Kelly. At the time of the sale last yearPR Software said the acquisitionhad put the Travelogix businessinto a “much better position, witha new focus on growth andprofitability.”

conjunction with the QueenslandTourism Industry Council and theinvestigation will be headed up byIan Kean. Two rounds of community andindustry consultation will takeplace, with an issues paper to bereleased in Mar and furtherconsultation thereafter. The review was welcomed byCol McKenzie, ceo of the Assn. ofMarine Park Tourism Operators,who said that tour deskcommissions “eat at the profitmargins of tourism businesses,which can put the viability ofsome businesses at risk”.
