QF urges SAA extension QANTAS has lodged a formalapplication with the InternationalAir Services Commission, askingfor interim authorisation to extendits currently expiring codesharewith South African Airways until31 Mar 2013 (TD breaking news). The saga commenced late lastyear, when the IASC issued ashock ruling which would see thelong-standing codeshare pactfinish at the end of this year.
Qantas subsequently lodgedlegal action seeking a JudicialReview of the decision, but inMay this year agreed to withdrawthe application followingdiscussions with the government. A new letter from QF to theIASC unveiled yesterday confirmsthat Qantas is preparing a newapplication seeking continuationof the authorisation to codesharewith SAA on the Sydney-Johannesburg services, which willbe lodged by 30 Jun. However, the carriers say that“in order to continue toeffectively operate and marketseats” they require at least sevenmonths of certainty - a six monthbooking window plus a month tounwind the arrangements in theevent that the IASC once againdeclines to renew itsauthorisation for the codeshare. Accordingly, Qantas isrequesting that while the IASCconsiders its new application, thedeadline for the wrap-up of thecodeshare be extended by threemonths to 31 Mar. The IASC is seeking submissionsabout the application, with aclosing date of 05 Jul.

EY was responding to a requestfor more information from theACCC about overlapping routes,as the regulator considers theproposed cooperation agreementbetween Etihad and Air Berlinflagged last month (TD 10 May). The ACCC has already grantedinterim approval for the carriersto begin joint marketing, with thedocument saying that sinceentering into their commercialcooperation deal, EY and Air Berlinnow operate combined doubledaily services to Dusseldorf. Voyages dismay at QF cuts THE timing of Qantas’s decisionto trim capacity to the Red Centrehas earnt the ire of the operatorsof the iconic Ayers Rock Resort. Last month, QF announced itwould cut one of two daily flightsbetween Cairns & Ayers Rock from01 Sep & suspend the Perth-AyersRock route on 28 Oct (TD 23 May). Voyages Indigenous TourismAustralia took over ownership ofAyers Rock Resort in May 2011and has been refreshing andrepositioning the resort since thattime, including introducing moreindigenous experiences and staff(TD 16 May), the building of aconference centre aimed at the
MICE sector, and the upgrade ofthe five-star Sails in the Desert. The latter projects are expectedto be completed in mid-Oct. MD Koos Klein told Travel Dailyat ATE this week the Qantas movehad appeared to not take intoaccount the efforts VoyagesIndigenous Tourism Australia hadinvested in the Red Centre. “We think that especially now,in the second half of the year, many of the new initiatives wehave launched were just startingto gain traction. “Maybe that decision fromQantas has not taken all of thosenew developments properly intoconsideration,” Klein said. However, the optmistic Kleinadded he believes “we have agood opportunity in the next 6 to12 months to give Qantas a verygood opportunity, based onsound principles, to reverse thatdecision.” He said the repositioning of AyersRock Resort as an Indigenouscentre of excellence and tourismhad gained renewed interest frombuyers attending ATE in Perth, with some inbound markets, likethe USA and China, showing signsof growth in the past year.

Irish appeal to the Gathering TOURISM Ireland has highlightedsightseers, culture-seekers,people in the 25-34 and +55 ageranges, and the Irish diaspora asits key marketing targets for the2013 Irish Gathering event. The segments are a result of anincreased focus on the Australianmarket, encouraging Aussietravellers to holiday in Ireland. Capable of catering to a hugevariety of tastes and interests,Ireland is focusing on these coremarkets as it looks to furtherstimulate already impressivegrowth figures from Australia. Speaking to Travel Daily,Tourism Ireland Ambassador NoelWhite said the numbers arrivinginto Ireland were already strong. “Australia is the seventh largestmarket for holidaymakers to theisland of Ireland - in 2010, thefigure (of Australians visitingIreland) was around 120,000”.
“Final figures for 2011 aren’tavailable yet but we’re looking ata growth rate of 7-8% and we’reexpecting a final figure of at least5-7%,” Ambassador White said. Despite a continued awarenessoperating across Australia, Whitesaid the core focus at the momentwas NSW and Victoria due to a60% majority of Australian visitorsoriginating from the two states. Ambassador White said interestlevels in the 2013 Gathering werestrong, but exact results wouldn’tbe clear for some time yet. “Certainly at an anecdotal levelat this point, we’re getting verygood engagement across ourembassy network and across theTourism Ireland network andtheir offices around the world”. “If tourists are going as far as toEngland or Wales, it makes senseat that point to go the rest of theway across to Ireland and wethink tourists will be pleasantlysurprised when they get there”. “We think it’s an idea whosetime has come,” White concluded.
