Principal’s
Message
This week is Big Gig. These performances are the
culmination of much hard work by staff and students. It
would be great to see the hall full on Tuesday for both
performances. On Friday is the Yr 12 final Assembly
10:30 am at the Golf Club, followed by a morning tea.
Big Gig is a showcase of public education as three
schools come together for short performances.
However, it is more than the performances that
promote public education. Big Gig is a confirmation of
the goodwill, passion and professionalism that still exists
in public education. Teachers, parents, office, support
staff and students have put in many unpaid hours to
bring together this event and should be congratulated.
There is an old saying ‘the world is run by those that
turn up’. Public education always turns up to support
communities.
This year, the end of Year 12 Assembly is at the Golf
Club. I thank the Services Club for allowing us to use
this venue as for reasons only known to a few in high
places, our school does not have a hall. I have looked at
the possibility of extending the cover around the
existing stage and installing roller doors. This area then
becomes a hall but can still be open for normal school
activities. We will soon have surplus air conditioners
available so this may be a small window of opportunity
to obtain something that other schools take for
granted. The problem is, I have the idea but not the
money. Common problem throughout my life.
On Friday this week I will be meeting the contractor for
the start-up meeting of the air-conditioning up-grade.
This is an exciting development, as it means the project
is close to commencement. It is true, the school has
been here over 100 years and students survived
without air-conditioning. However, the technology is
now available and modern refrigerated units are now as
efficient as older evaporative models. If people are
passionate about the need to remain in the past to
‘toughen’ up children, grab your typewriter, write a
letter, saddle up the horse and post it. Newsflash, the
stamps are not a penny anymore.
As mentioned in the previous issue, NAPLAN is one of
the diagnostic tools schools use to determine progress
in Literacy & Numeracy. In the interest of transparency
I have highlighted some positives and areas where the
school needs to continue to improve. The Year 3
results are, I believe, outstanding and a true indication
of the quality teaching and learning in the K,1,2
classrooms. Examples include:
Year 3
Positives
22 % of our students are in the top two bands of
Reading
No student scored in the bottom band of
Writing, indeed 40% are in the top two bands
20% of students are in the top band for Grammar
and Punctuation. This is compared to 2015 where
there were no students in the top band.
20% of students are in the top two bands for
Numeracy compared to none in 2015,16,17.
Areas for improvement
Approximately 20% of students are still in the
lowest bands for some categories. This is a
massive improvement from 2015 where over half
the students were in the lowest bands, but not
good enough.
These results are particularly pleasing considering our
school has been without an Instructional Leader for
most of this year and we also have a larger student
sample this year. Also, every child is included at this
school. We do not have mystery viruses going through
the school only affecting students struggling
academically around NAPLAN time like some schools
with fancy gates tend to have.
Year 5
Positives
32% of students in the top two bands of
Numeracy.
50% reduction in students in the lowest two
bands of NAPLAN since 2015.
Areas for improvement
There is still an unacceptably high number of
students in the lower bands. However, in my
view, one is an unacceptably high number.
Year 7
Positives
30% of students are in the top two bands of
Spelling. This includes 18% in the top band
compared to 0 in 2015.
A 50% reduction in students in the lowest two
bands across the school since 2015. This is with a
significantly larger sample.

Page 3 Term 3 Week 10
Areas for improvement
There is still too many students not completing the
whole paper. This is an indication of cognitive fatigue
because of a lack of automaticity in basic skills, I believe.
This is a fancy way of saying they need to work quicker.
Year 9
Positives
50% reduction in the number of students in the
bottom two bands in Spelling.
No student scored in the bottom band for
Numeracy. This the third year this has been
achieved.
Areas for improvement
Year 9 students are very difficult to motivate to
complete the test or place importance in the process.
I find these results pleasing because it indicates
continuous improvement. However, the work is far
from complete. We need to have the majority of our
students in the top two bands before I will be happy.
The trend is starting but needs to continue.
The media was focusing last week on class sizes. The
implied message was that class sizes are smaller because
of diminishing populations. This school before this year
increased from 92 students to 122 over three years
before the drought started to hit, so it is not consistent
across country areas. There is also a question of equity
in this argument. A child born in a rural area still
deserves access to quality public education. In central
schools the need to have specialist teachers in High
School often lowers the child to teacher ratio.
However, I would argue very strongly that country
children still need access to specialist Science, Maths,
English teachers and indeed across all the subject areas.
Educational access should not be determined by
geography.
Those of us with a few miles on the clock can
remember the droughts of the 80’s. Last week I was
asked if I think this one is worse. I would have to say
yes because in the 80’s despite Australia having several
million more sheep, feed was more easily available and
as a result at a cheaper price. I have no doubt we will
recover as a town and farming community but I wonder
what that recovery will look like. If our economy does
not diversify we are at the mercy of future droughts
economically and socially. Maybe the next one will get
us. Indeed, if this drought continues and some farmers
are forced to sell because the understanding,
benevolent financial institutions foreclosing, who will
purchase the property? Global trends are for corporate
farming and corporations do not put kids into schools
or purchase groceries at the shop. In my home town of
Moree, vast amounts of land are now owned by
insurance companies or overseas agri – business, not a
good situation for the survival of towns.
The Federal Government has recently announced an
enquiry into the Family Court System. As an educator
of 28 years experience, I have often witnessed the
tragic toll on children and parents of slow or poor
family court decisions, so I welcome this well overdue
enquiry. Prime Minister, Morrison, has asked that
people adversely affected by family court decisions
write to their local Federal member. In our area, it is
Michael McCormack. The contact details are as follows:
Email: [email protected]
Address:
Suite 2 11-15 Fitzmaurice St Wagga Wagga 2650
If you are hesitant to write because you are emotional
or feel you cannot articulate your point of view well
enough in a written form, I am very happy for you to
come to the school and I can help you in complete
confidentiality as I feel extremely strongly about this
issue in terms of the impact on families and
communities.
Last week, I had a student ask me why I seem on the
surface at least confident to the point of some perceive
arrogant. The point was when people criticise them, it
hurts so much. I simply quoted Morgan Freeman
famous American actor. Morgan Freeman said, he does
not take criticism seriously from those he would not go
to for advice. I think if we could instil this attitude into
our children, bullying would be significantly reduced
across all schools.
For sale is a resignation speech for the Department of
Education. Going cheap as I have 150 million reasons
why I do not need it.

Ajax’s
Weekly Woof
Woof Woof Awards: I have had lots of time off this term because of the ‘Hilux leg’. I will be visiting the vet over the
Christmas break to see if I will need another
operation. Before that I have enrolled myself in
Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and the Michelle
Bridges Program to get ready for surgery. Southo
said I need to lose weight. I have never seen a man
in more urgent need of a mirror and a bucket load
of reflection.
500 happy barks to the students who are
performing in Big Gig. The only complaint is
no role for a Labrador?
500 happy barks to Natasha Grady for the
excellent job of painting the toilet block.
They look brand new and do not need a two
legged electrical fault as someone suggested.
500 happy barks to the Primary
Enrichment group. You have worked well and
produced a quality product.
501 happy barks to Ryan Dorman. The
school received a phone call from a national
television program commenting on the ‘Pied
Piper of Trundle’ short film. They want to
talk to him.
500 happy barks to Austin Kirk for
voluntarily picking up the rubbish last week. Someone who lives close to the school in
Croft Street could learn a lesson.
1000 happy barks to those students who
have made a massive improvement in
NAPLAN over the last two years. Ironically,
I have been the ‘Pets as therapy dog’ for two
years.
500 angry growls to smokers who leave their butts in the street. Smoking is legal but
littering is not!!!
The holidays are here and all students deserve a
break. However, we should always remember that
not all places are as safe as Trundle. Please look
out for your children and remember also a road
runs through Trundle, so we do not know who is
in our town.

Secondary
What an incredibly productive and full weeks we
are finishing the term on.
Firstly congratulations to our Year 12 on their
graduation on Friday night. This is the first of ceremonies commemorating this milestone in our
students’ lives. In particular congratulations to
Brooke Morgan for her Awards of Excellence for
English Standard, Community and Family Studies,
and her Certificate of Achievement in Hospitality,
Mathematics Standard 2 and PDHPE. With these
array of awards it will come as no surprise that
Brooke also received the award for dedication to
studies. Well done Brooke, Brodi and Harrison for
all of your achievements in Year 12.
We also had one of our Year 11 extended students
receive an Award of Excellence for HSC
Mathematics. Congratulations to Ella Bridger on
this achievement.
This Friday we will be hosting these students for
their final assembly. This will take place at the Golf
Club at 10:30am and will be followed by morning
tea at school.
Last week we had 3 students involved in the plane
build in Parkes. On Sunday I had the pleasure of
watching this plane fly. This is an incredible
achievement to be involved in a program like this
for the students. The organisers of the event made
a point of finding me to tell me how impressed
they were with the students and their level of
autonomy in the build. Well done Jamie, Nick and
Will. A special mention must go to Mr Grady for his preparation of these students which is reflected
in the high calibre of their work skills and ability.
This week we have the Big Gig performances. This
is a culmination of an extremely long period of
preparation and hard work by both the students
and staff involved. In my limited involvement I have
to say that the students have been nothing short of
amazing in all aspects of their participation. If I was
to mention all the single incidents that have
impressed me I would need several pages to
complete the task. The performance is in Trundle
this Tuesday and is nothing short of an unmissable
event!!
As always if there are any questions in regards to
secondary matters please contact me at school.
Have a fantastic week
