Truganina Times

As the sun sets on another successful term at Truganina College, we find ourselves preparing for school holidays and having a well deserved break before the most exciting term of all – Term 2! In preparation for term 2, we reflect on term 1 and recognise what we have done well.

This term we have maintained our very high expectations of students and staff. We expect all students to be here every day and on time at 8:35am. We are on track to achieve our attendance goal of having no more than 15 days absent for the whole year. Our students are given many extra curricula opportunities to engage in their learning – interschool sports, student success club, enrichment maths groups, MaqLit Groups and the list goes on. Everyday counts – make sure you continue to be here every day to do your best learning.

All students across Foundation – Year 9 have been working towards achieving 300 Nights of Reading. Make sure you all continue to read in the holidays, visit your local Public Library, pick up a newspaper, log onto Mathletics, Use Wushka and read, read, read! Students on track to achieving this goal have read for 70 nights so far. Has your child read for 70 nights? Are you reading on weekends? How can you engage more with reading? Ask your child’s home room teacher if you need some ideas for how to achieve this target.

Grade Three Narrative Writing Learning Intention: We are learning to write a captivating beginning of a story using sizzling sentences.

Success Criteria: I know I am successful when I can:

Explain what a sizzling sentence is.

Write a narrative using a sizzling beginning to hook my readers.

The Grade Three students have been learning to write creative narratives using a variety of writing techniques. One of the techniques they have been exploring and implementing into their writing is sizzling sentences. Sizzling sentences are a creative way to begin a story by hooking in the reader!

These are some examples of sizzling sentences our students have been using:

3A Harman: One Winters day, there was a group of toads that decided to go on an adventure together.

3B Pendeza: The flood is uncontrollable. Trees are falling like ice snow drops.

3C Khyran: Two teams, two battles and one winner. It’s the Old West Cowboys vs The Mighty Knights.

3D Kristin: “Ahhh!” screamed Ann as she sat upright on her bed, her heart was beating non-stop; her lips were quivering and her hands were trembling.

3E Mehtab: “No!” said the tooth fairy. “All my precious jewels are gone”.

3F Rimas: I leapt out of bed that morning and hurried to get dressed.

3G Harshad: “Ah!” My heart was racing. Will it eat me? What was it? The door kept banging.

3H Marisa: Bang! Boom! The gloomy haunted house crumbled.

College Attendance Data

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day

your child misses puts them behind, and can affect their

educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with

progressively lower achievement in reading, writing and

numeracy.

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods:

Online: log the absence directly using our Compass Parent Portal.

Telephone: the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

Email: the school and provide the staff with your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

Student Leadership in Year 4 Student Leadership empowers students at all ages, especially in our passionate Year 4s. On Thursday 21st of March, a special assembly was held to celebrate the announcement of the Year 4 Class Captains; in front of their classmates, teachers and families. These leaders were elected following a written application process, and a speech to showcase their commitment to this role through a class election (directly linking to the Humanities Curriculum this term)! Congratulations to the following students on your appointment as Class Captain:

4A – Ashrita Ulpala

4B – Tript Shergill

4C – Takdir Shergill

4D – Alexis Tagala

4E – Nathan David Samuel

4F – Unnabh Paudel

4G – Asad Mohammed

These students participated in their first meeting on Monday 25th March, sharing their vision of Student Voice at Truganina College in 2019.

We look forward to seeing all your inspirational ideas in action!

Ann Le Teaching and Learning Team Leader – Year 4

Year 4 students have been demonstrating their 21st Century skills of Creativity and Communication throughout their Writing unit of Poetry, focussing on quatrains and limericks. A poetry exhibition was held on Thursday 21st of March to showcase their proud work, demonstrating the College Values of Learn and Responsible. Students from all classes presented their published poems in front of their families, showing pride in their learning.

Thank you to all the families for your support, making this event extra special to the students.

Year 5 STEM Project (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

Baby Egg Adoption Program

Year 5 STEM students had the privilege of adopting a baby egg for an entire week! This meant taking their baby egg everywhere.

Students were taken through the design process to create a safe baby egg carrier. Have a look at some of Year 5’s creative engineering!

And yes, regrettably, some Baby Eggs did NOT make the seven days. Students will be collecting and graphing this data using a tally table and a histogram.

Where is the STEM in this project?

S – The science of biology – How does the evolutionary shape of an egg influence its survival to the hatching stage?

T – The technology used for research, Kahoot quizzes, drawing and designing.

E – The engineering process involved in planning, designing, creating and evaluating a safe baby-egg carrier.

M – The mathematics of ensuring the baby-egg carrier is large enough to fit an egg, but not too large to that the egg breaks. How is total surface area calculated? How is volume calculated? What happens when we work with decimals?

And of course, at Truganina College, literacy is ALWAYS included – the reading and comprehension of text followed by the accurate framing of complete sentences in response of given questions.

Year 6 Summer Gala Sports Day Last Monday 25th March our Year 6 students took part in a Gala Sports Day where they participated in Summer Sports against our local Schools. The day was a great success as it provided students with the opportunity to be involved in competitive sport at an inter-school level promoting physical activity.

Student Feedback of Gala Day:

On the 25th of March, the Year 6s went to the Summer Gala sports Day excursion. Volleystars and Basketball players went to Eagle Stadium while Cricket, Hockey, T-Ball, and Tennis went to Salt Water Reserve. There were hard matches being played all day and the scoring was very close. Our School came second overall and we went back to School feeling happy, proud and accomplished. We were all able to socialise with new people and once again meet old friends. Teachers also had a great time seeing their students play different sports that they had learnt during PE. We showed School Values of Resilience, Respect and Responsibility, and learnt different skills throughout the day. None of the students gave up and all showed great sportsmanship including shaking other students’ hands after matches. Finally, at the end of the day all of the students went home sweaty and very worn out. It was a great day.

Learning Experiences from Harmony Day

On Thursday 21st March we celebrated Harmony Day at Truganina College. Students were exposed to various learning experiences, which highlighted different cultures. Students discussed the importance of accepting differences and valuing others’ beliefs.

TLT 6 On Harmony Day, TLT 6 invited the following guest speakers, Ms Jagruti, Ms Amna, Ms Palu, Miss Es-pino and Miss Le to come and inform year 6 students about their cultural celebrations. Students learnt about, Holi, Eid, Easter, Lunar Year and New Zealand cultural dances. We found out the deeper mean-ing of cultural celebrations and the purpose behind it.

We also had an opportunity to participate in activities designed to learn about each other and cele-brate cultural diversity and acceptance. It was fun and exciting to acknowledge our differences and understand the importance of living in harmony at Truganina College.

NAPLAN Update NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The assessments are undertaken every year in May.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of:

Reading

Writing

Language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)

Numeracy.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher.

NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learned over time through the school curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the school calendar. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

Thank you also to Sadia Toqeer and the Community Engagement in Learning team who have engaged our school community with thorough information sessions and resources to support students in their learning both at school and at home. Families can access information and resources via our school website.

We are very excited to see what the students are going to show us with their learning through these assessments.

Year 7 Spanish Learning Intention:

We are learning how to describe others using the verbs ‘TENER’ and ‘SER.’

I am successful when I can:

Know which conjugation of ‘Tener’ (to have) and ‘Ser’ (to be) I will use to describe others.

Describe the famous people using the adjectives in my vocabulary list.

Share these sentences with my classmates.

This term the Year 7 students in Spanish have been learning how to describe themselves and others. We have learnt the conjugation of two verbs- ‘Tener’ (to have) and ‘Ser’ (to be) and the pronouns we will use with these conjugations. Students have used adjectives to describe their appearance and the appearance of their family members.

For example:

‘Yo soy alto.’ - I am tall.

‘Yo tengo el pelo moreno.’ - I have brown hair.

Mi mama tiene los ojos marrones. - My mum has brown eyes.

In this task, Students were asked to describe famous people in small groups, using the conjugation of the pronoun he (él) or she (ella).

The whole Leadership Team is working hard to improve the school and provide a safe environment for both students and staff. Each and every one of us have picked up the role of being a leader because we are all passionate about improving the school, organizing events, and helping others.

Zayin Canlas, 7B

Last Tuesday, the newly-elected student leadership team met for the first time. They shared with each other why they had chosen to step up as leaders of Truganina College, and their vision for the school. It was inspiring to see everyone’s dedication and pride in their role.

It was also great to see everyone’s passion and motivation in regards to all of the issues that were dis-cussed. A lot of excellent ideas were shared, so it is exciting to imagine what this year’s student lead-ership team can achieve.
