Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Playing with shapes

Jigsaw puzzles and drawing shapes helps teach your child problem solving skills and spatial awareness. You can encourage your child to identify shapes in their everyday life such as a round ball, a square window or a hexagonal stop sign.

Making patterns

Make a pattern using pebbles, legs, or pieces of coloured paper.

Cooking with your child

Cooking provides opportunities to count and measure, not to mention a delicious outcome and some opportunities to pass on cultural cuisine knowledge. Ask your child to count eggs, measure milk and flour as well as talk about the temperature the oven requires to bake a cake. Use this as an additional opportunity to talk about text types (recipes) and tie it nicely with Literacy learning.

Making collections

Collect objects from the outdoors such as stones, leaves and twigs. Sort them into groups and count how many items are in each group.

The Lead Maths team at the College would love to hear about how you incorporate Maths intodaily life in your home. Please share some photographs or words of Maths experiences that you undertake in your house. You can do this by either emailing them to the school account or sending a picture in your child’s student planner.

I look forward to sharing your images in coming newsletters. Have a safe and enjoyable week everyone!

New Mobile Phone Policy Dear Truganina College community,

As you may be aware, the Victorian Government has announced a new mobile phone policy that will require students to switch their phones off and securely store them away during the day.

The policy is designed to support teaching and learning environment that is free from unnecessary distractions, disruptions and student inattention caused by the urge to check their phones.

Though it is preferable that students don’t bring a mobile phone to school. Students who do will need to comply with our College Mobile Phone Policy.

From Monday 10th February, 2020, all students who bring a mobile phone to school will be required to secure their device to prevent them from accessing it throughout the day, supporting both their academic and social growth. Students will be able to access their device again, as they step outside the College at all exit points by tapping their pouch on unlocking stations.

The Yondr team will be allocating, presenting and training all Year 7-9 students on the 6th and 7th of February to ensure they understand how to activate and deactivate their pouch. If a Foundation to Year 6 student is required to bring a mobile phone, they will be supported on a needs basis through their Assistant Principal. Please be aware that after allocation, lost or damaged pouches will require you to replace them at a cost of $35.

As always, communication with students can be gained through our administration phone number 9368 9800. We will also make available additional Yondr pouches to be purchased if your child happens to lose or damage it before the conclusion of their time at Truganina College. For more information regarding Yondr, please visit their website via https://www.overyondr.com/schools

In advance we would like to thank you for supporting our students having a phone-free learning environment. If required a copy of our College Mobile Phone Policy can be provided upon request or alternatively accessed via our College website. Please refer to the Department of Education and Training website for further information on students using mobile phones policy and the personal goods policy.

Regards,

Christopher Pugh

Camps, Sports, Excursions Fund (CSEF)

CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors; excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. These are all part of a healthy curriculum.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

$125 for primary school students.

$225 for secondary school students.

The CSEF funding does not cover school levies. School levies must be paid by all families. See office staff if you need assistance or have any questions.

How to apply

Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form, complete the form and we’ll take a copy of your Health Care Card.
