CEO MESSAGE

of the careers we build at Wallem. Vijay joined as a cadet in 1972, since then he’s travelled the world and ultimately found his place ashore as Director, Safety and Insurance. With the greatest respect, we thank Vijay for his service and wish him well in his retirement.

Building careers is a core part of our Wallem culture. Time and again we share the story of seafarers from all over the globe who began as cadets and retired as international business leaders. Wallem is the seat of change for young seafarers. We attribute a lot of this success to our focus on learning. In 2015 we formalised our training efforts, aligning with the world’s leading business schools and even introduced e-learning models for shore based staff. Now in 2016 our seafarers will benefit from dedicated learning resources, led by Fared Khan in his new role as Marine Director.

This is a great time of growth, learning and success for our business. I thank each and every one of our team for their efforts in 2015 and I look forward to more success this year.

Regards,

Simon Doughty Wallem Group CEO

Since our last edition we’ve celebrated Diwali, Christmas and Chinese New Year. It’s been a busy and joyous time for everyone, right across the globe. But no matter how busy

we get, at Wallem we never compromise safety. Ours is a relentless pursuit of safety. Why? Because with safe practices in our company culture we ensure our friends and colleagues return from work safely, every time. Safety is part of who we are at Wallem, and I’m extremely proud of that.

We have a long history of serving our clients in a way that builds long-term and evolving relationships. Customer service is in our culture too. For a company like Wallem that means getting to know our customers, to know their business challenges and place our relevant expertise and knowledge at the forefront of our relationships. We are a company of experts – there’s a lot to offer our partners. We’re also a progressive company, we’re nimble enough to pivot towards new industry trends in a timely manner, to pro-actively meet the ever-evolving needs of our clients.

2016 is going to be an exciting year for Wallem. Here in Hong Kong, we’ll be moving to a brand new office, very close to our current address. We’re grasping this opportunity to redesign our workspace, to be smarter and more efficient in our modelling and business practices. This professionally planned approach will become the standard for Wallem offices across the globe. It will be a new look and a smarter, more technologically advanced approach to our day-to-day environment.

In 2016 Wallem is continuing to move up the value chain, our expertise in VLCCs, Car Carriers and Bulkers is being noted by the industry and our business in this area has grown. Our remarkably experienced VLCC team has recently taken management of six new build Gener8 tankers - from yard to first voyage – quite a feat. With nine more new builds arriving over the coming year from this customer, we are in a great position for more VLCC success.

Towards the end of 2015 we opened our Shenzhen office, this is a significant opening for Wallem, MSA awarded us as the only international ship manager allowed to start recruiting seafarers directly from China – Wallem seafarers. This is an exclusive agreement, for Wallem only, for a minimum trial period of three years. It’s a huge coup for our business. It’s a coup for Chinese seafarers too, because Wallem is famous industry-wide for building careers and changing lives.

In this edition we celebrate the esteemed career of Vijay Soman, Vijay has been with the Wallem Group for 43 years. His career is another shining example

FEATURE STORY

Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) are among the world’s largest operating cargo vessels. They’re also known

as Supertankers due to their immense capacity. VLCCs are mind-bending vessels – physically they are monstrous and commercially they work to carry precious crude oil across the globe. Without them, the world as we know it would stop.

VLCCs are a progressive piece of maritime history – a modern masterpiece of shipping. Wallem is very proud to be an industry leader at the forefront of this sector since our first VLCC client in the early 1980s. Since that first client, Wallem’s VLCC business grew to manage the world’s largest ULCC at the time, Jahre Viking.

In 2016, Wallem has been tasked by Gener8 to manage 11 new VLCCs, with new builds delivered from the respective shipyards in China and South Korea. With six ships in this new fleet successfully delivered by the beginning of 2016, Wallem is well on the way to success and being one of largest Third Party Ship Managers in this segment.

Know your Vessel: VLCC stats

Cargo: Carry crude oil mainly from the Persian Gulf / West Africa to Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Size: Among the largest cargo vessels in the world, ranging up to 320,000 DWT.

Tanks: VLCCs have many tanks, generally divided into 4 groups, each group capable of storing a different grade of crude oil.

dimensions: Taller than the Eiffel Tower! Up to 470m (1,540 ft) in length. Beam of up to 60m (200 ft) and draught of up to 20m (66 ft)

Passage: Capable of passing through Suez Canal in Egypt.

history: The first oil carriers were built in the 1860s and were sail-powered.

Manoeuvring: Their enormous size, coupled with extensive crude oil cargo, means VLCCs are laborious to manoeuvre and take a long time to stop.

As of October 2015, Wallem’s ship management portfolio boasts over 20 VLCCS, part of a larger tanker fleet, at over 6,000,000 DWT we proudly stand as one of the industry’s leading third party VLCC Ship Managers. Looking to the future, Wallem is poised to take delivery of even more VLCC vessels in 2016.

Ioannis Stefanou, Global Technical Director of Wallem Ship Management says, “Wallem’s VLCC portfolio is a pillar of our business that is growing from strength to strength. Combining our VLCC vessels with Wallem’s Suezmax vessels firmly plants us as large vessel experts with a long history of technical excellence and commercial success for our clients.”

What makes Wallem the Ship Manager of Choice for so many VLCC owners? Ioannis Stefanou continues, “Wallem offers a reliable, uninterrupted service for our VLCC clients. We have an understanding of not just the technical, but the commercial needs of the ship. We have experience being audited by all big oil companies, also known as Oil Majors. Clients immensely value our strong relationship with Oil Majors and we’re proud of our track record of successful vetting inspections.”

“It’s this marriage of technical expertise and commercial sensibility that sets us apart.” Concludes Ioannis Stefanou.

Wallem’s broad VLCC offering is unique, covering the breadth of new building shipyard project management, commercial management, lifeboat servicing, providing quality crew and even connecting clients with charters.

Ioannis Stefanou explains, “From shipyard project management, to launch, crewing and beyond, we carry out the voyage without incidents. Our teams are on time, successfully sourcing all required approvals, and actively working to turn a profit for the owner. It’s a complete service offering by highly experienced marine experts.”

Wallem’s VLCC Ships Attract the Best Talent VLCCs are considered by many seafarers as the pinnacle of crewing. These juggernauts of the sea are an aspirational crew placement for young seafarers and experienced maritime career men.

“Wallem’s growing VLCC fleet presents a ready-made pool of trained VLCC talent, poised for clients to source reliable and experienced crew. Combine this with our strong safety record in VLCCs and Wallem fast becomes the employer of choice for seafarers looking for a VLCC career. Professional Wallem seafarers will deliver safety and operational excellence and these are conditions our clients benefit greatly from.” Says Fared Khan, Marine Director. A history of Wallem’s VLCC business Wallem’s history of managing VLCCs spans across more than three decades, being among the first few ship managers to venture into this segment in early 1977 with a VLCC named South Sun owned by Salen Tankers, Sweden.

WSM’s ex-Managing Director, Captain Deepak Honawar, and Safety Director Captain Vijay Soman were amongst those working in the take over team as Chief Mate and Second Mate. At the time, South Sun featured Steam Turbine as her prime mover. This initial take over was followed by VLCCs from other owners including Kimberly, Flying Cloud Al Bahabi and more in 1978 and 1979.

Around this time, there was a change in industry perception, leading to a tendency to build even bigger supertankers ULCCs (Ultra Large Crude Carriers). Wallem remained a leading ship manager in this segment too and had many ULCCs including Jahre Viking, B.T. Banker, B.T. Broker, B.T. Investor, B.T. Trader, Dena, Sea Sovereign, Sea Splendour, Sea World and more under its portfolio of large vessels.

With the passage of time, the shipping Industry realised ULCCs were not suitable for worldwide trading due to their exceptionally large size and deep draft. The focus then returned to VLCCs and Wallem continued the success story of managing this segment of large tanker vessels. In the long history of Wallem’s VLCC business, Wallem’s client list has included big names in the industry such as Front Line, NYK, Gener8, China Merchants, Hyundai Merchant Marine, and Oak Maritime to name a few. Presently, Wallem teams take care of state-of-the-art and highly fuel efficient VLCCs featuring eco-designs and equipped with latest technology and gadgets, built and delivered from DSME Korea and SWS China shipyards.

VLCCs in 2016 and beyond Akhilesh Roy, Head of Tanker Fleet Operations says ‘’2016 has all the ingredients to provide an excellent business environment for VLCCs owners. With a significant amount of VLCC tonnage being engaged in storage of crude oil due to low price levels, freight rates are expected to remain very robust."

However, there will also be strong challenges to deal with. Our industry is focused on carrying out business in an environmentally sustainable way, with more and more stringent regulations being enacted. While the new generation of VLCCs are built to comply with these regulations, it will be quite a challenge to retrofit equipment on older vessels. Ballast Water Treatment system is one such example.

evolving Wallem’s Customer-focus

Traditionally, Wallem has enjoyed long-term relationships with esteemed clients. For generations, our teams have valued and nurtured long-term partnerships with shipping’s greatest

companies. Proudly, this is a pillar of our business.

Together, we continue to leave our mark in maritime history. Wallem has managed some of the biggest ships in modern times – from the super tanker Jahre Viking to the 2015 launches of the world's largest Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), managed by Höegh-Wallem for Höegh Autoliners.

Like all successful business models, evolution and ideation are necessary for our business to thrive. Wallem’s customer-centric approach remains the same, but our business and execution must consistently evolve to meet the needs of our clients and the changing face of our industry. We must be restless and hungry for new business opportunities.

So how does Wallem best serve our clients? How do we evolve our business to meet those needs in a timely fashion, to ensure we stay relevant and ahead of competitors?

The answer is simple: By listening to our clients. By getting to know the people and structure of the businesses we serve.

Nigel Moore, Director Sales & Marketing at Wallem Group is passionate about the evolution of the Group’s customer-centric approach. Nigel leads Wallem’s customer initiatives and says

“We are actively working to continually understand what our customers want, and then adapt our services to meet our clients’ needs.”

“At the heart of Wallem is our people – we offer an unrivalled resource of diverse maritime experts and the most progressive thinking in our business. We offer the industry’s best proposition and we’re a lot of fun to be around!”

“I task my team every day with this: Get to know your clients’ business, and then add value. Spend time getting to know your clients, identify their business challenges and then introduce them to the right Wallem expert. Many customers are surprised by our diverse expertise and this is where the Wallem team thrives.” Nigel Moore continues.

When business is personal Improving the customer experience offered by Wallem is a focus for 2016. Customer Experience, or as it’s been defined by The Harvard Business Review the customers’ end-to-end journey, results in a relationship feeling, or lack there of.

The Harvard Business Review (HBR) published an article called ‘The Truth About Customer Experience’, exploring the concept and its deep impact on modern businesses. The authors found organisations that were able to skillfully manage the entire customer experience do reap enormous rewards. These rewards include enhanced customer satisfaction, reduced churn, increased revenue, and greater employee satisfaction. It’s difficult to argue with the impact a superior customer experience offers a business.

“Emotional connection is at the heart of the customer experience, which is especially prevalent in service industries. People like to do business with people they like doing business with” shares Nigel Moore. “Wallem has the right DNA to successfully make that emotional connection with our clients. This is a people business and so we must be spending time with our customers. This, together with our new CRM technology will help us provide an industry-leading level of customer service.”

Many may assume the customer experience lays solely in the realm of the sales division. However, the HBR cited the need for positive, effective and efficient collaboration across business divisions. Nigel Moore explains, “Meeting the needs of our customers is a company-wide initiative. All divisions and streams of our business must work to support each other. This is the only way our clients will reap the benefits of our extensive offering.”

New technologies to provide better service Technology is becoming a differentiator for the shipping industry. Whether that technology is on vessels or in land-based business units, it’s fast becoming a necessity to get the job done efficiently and effectively.

So what about customer management, what technology tools does Wallem use to better serve customers? Customer Relationship Management, or CRM, is the “Mission Control” of client service. Nigel Moore explains, ”Our CRM system, known internally as Salesforce, helps us manage important information about our clients. Maintaining this information – our client contacts, their needs, new opportunities, services we already provide etc., allows us to work more closely with our customers and provide services that add value to their business.

“We’re relying on our Business Units to help us keep Salesforce up to date. I urge the team - if you have an update about a client or a new piece of business, inputting that information into the system is a priority”

encourages Nigel. “If the latest information is in the system, it means we're able to leverage our expertise and work more closely with clients to provide the services they want and in a timely manner.

The team In China we offer the complete range of Wallem solutions including technical & commercial management, newbuilding supervision, lifeboat maintenance, crewing and procurement services.

To ensure that potential clients in China are aware of our range of maritime solutions, Karen He has joined the team as Business Development Manager China. Karen will be using her extensive maritime experience to connect China based clients with our various business units. Karen reports to Nigel Moore, Director Sales & Marketing and will work closely with the Shanghai team to grow our client base in China.

Wallem’s strength lies in its wide range of maritime solutions and in-house expertise. “Our diverse expertise is where we bring the most value to our clients. We are in a unique position to have an edge on competitors because we offer such a broad range of expertise and marine services” notes Nigel Moore. In order to ensure this message reaches the market Tomas Langgard has recently joined the group as Business Development Manager Europe (see Tomas’ profile on page 11). Tomas along with the European Management Team will be focusing on forging closer relations with European customers and ensuring that the market knows about our capabilities along with our desire to develop new relationships and win new business.

Wallem’s Superior Customer experience In Action Today we are leading the way in tanker and car carrier management; crewing initiatives; newbuilding supervision; marine procurement; cruise ship agency & technical services; servicing of naval vessels; lifeboat maintenance and much more.

“we cannot simply do what we have always done, we have to continue to listen to our customers’ needs and adapt our services accordingly” says Nigel Moore.

“Customers lie at the heart of everything we do and building closer and better partnerships with both existing and potential clients is an imperative in 2016 and beyond.”

In mid 2015, Höegh Autoliners took delivery of Höegh Target, the world's largest Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessel. This impressive vessel is an engineering feat and was designed by the new building team at Höegh

Autoliners. Höegh Wallem Ship Management in Singapore proudly control the technical management of Höegh Target, the first of six state-of-the-art post-panamax vessels to be delivered to Höegh Autoliners by the end of this year.

“Höegh Target marks a milestone in efficient and environmentally friendly shipping.” Remarks Peter Jensen, General Manager of Höegh Wallem Ship Management. “She sailed through East Asia to Europe on her Maiden Voyage and is a shining example of our teams’ high quality ship operations and maintenance capabilities. We’re very proud to be leading the industry with such a groundbreaking vessel.“

In September 2015, the second vessel in the New Horizon series was successfully named Höegh Trigger, at a naming ceremony at Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries in China. With its deck space of 71,400 square meters and carrying capacity of 8,500 car equivalent units, the vessel joins the Höegh

Target as another of the world’s largest PCTCs.

Höegh Trigger is, together with its sister vessels, designed to minimise its impact on the environment. Energy efficiency principles have been followed throughout the ship design process and the latest technology in the market has been implemented. Attention has also been paid to optimise the hull form in order to combine high cargo capacity and low fuel consumption. Extensive model testing has been carried out to achieve outstanding performance. In addition to calm water performance, special focus has been paid to performance in heavy seas and winds.

The vessels offer cargo clients a significant expansion in cargo loading capabilities, including a higher door opening than Höegh Autoliners’ current vessels, enabling cargo up to 6.5 metres high and 12 metres wide to be loaded. Extra ramp strength allows for cargo weighing up to 375 tonnes to be loaded over the stern ramp and 22 tonnes over the side ramp.

These impressive capabilities present unique logistical challenges to Höegh Wallem teams who manage the vessels’ port requirements.

“Our teams are renowned for their ingenuity, professionalism and ability to solve such problems. We’re looking forward to helping each of the New horizon deliveries reach their full potential while under the management of our knowledgeable teams.” Peter Jensen General Manager, hoegh Wallem Ship Management

Wallem’s NYK crew pool exceeds 400 highly trained mariners.

Wallem’s Career NyK Crew At Wallem, our NYK crew pool is robust, with over 400 highly trained professional seafarers assigned to NYK vessels. NYK vessels are an aspirational placement for our seafarers, viewed as a long-term career path. So, what makes crewing for NYK so appealing? Firstly, it’s a unique mix of familiarity and diversity. Those seafarers in Wallem’s NYK pool are able to rotate between ships but remain with familiar, very professional NYK systems and protocols.

NYK is known as a company that looks after seafarers, Wallem ships are personally visited by NYK staff who seek feedback and share the company's ethos regarding long-term relationships with seafarers already sailing with NYK. This approach is also executed ashore, where Wallem SuperIntendents and NYK shore staff work closely together.

Serving Wallem’s european Clients

Prior to Christmas, Tomas Langgard joined Wallem as Business

devleopment Manager, europe. In his new role Tomas will be serving the needs of Wallem’s european customers. In this interview True North gets to know more about Tomas and his plans to grow Wallem’s customer base in his new role. TN: Tell us about your new role TL: In December 2015 I started at Wallem as Business Development Manager – Europe. My role is based in Europe and I'm focused on sharing Wallem’s broad offering to our existing clients, as well as meeting with new clients.

Much of what we do in Europe is Ship Management, but as we all know, Wallem has a broad portfolio of related business streams from life boat servicing at Sea Safe, agency and logistics, commercial management, through to comprehensive procurement services. In my new role, I’ll be working closely with European clients to ensure they know the depth of experience at Wallem, and most importantly connect them to experts in our business when they need support or guidance.

We have a lot of know how and experience to share. I’m really looking forward to getting to know our clients and their businesses.

TN: What countries will you cover and who do you report to? TL: My role is Europe-wide and that includes the UK, Germany, Greece, Italy, France, Benelux, Spain, Portugal

and Scandinavia. I’m also happy that my remit includes Norway – my home country. I will report to two of our senior business leaders, Nigel Moore, Director Sales & Marketing at Wallem Group and also to Wiebke Schuett , Managing Director Wallem Europe, who heads the Hamburg office.

TN: What’s your shipping background, where have you come from? TL: I’ve lived abroad since I was at University in Spain, studying for a Masters in International Business Management. After almost two years working for a consultancy company on a project with Hewlett Packard, I started my maritime career and I’ve never looked back. Shipping is definitely in my blood now, it’s a career choice that’s been rewarding and has taken me from Europe to America to Asia and back to Europe again.

My shipping career started with Spanish ship supply company Provimar, I worked for a year in their cruise department in Barcelona before I was asked to move to Mobile, Alabama to set up a support office to the regional HQ in Houston, Texas. This was a result of the company winning a contract with one of the biggest catering companies in the world, with a lot of activity in the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico. A promotion then saw me based in Houston, Texas as Sales Manager reporting to the Regional Director. While I was there, the company was acquired by the Norwegian Eitzen Group and turned into EMS Ship Supply – the largest ship supply company in the world at the time. Under this new ownership the ship supply division became a part of a major multidisciplinary player in the international shipping industry. It was an exciting time for me and I learned a lot about our industry.

From Houston I moved to Singapore when I was promoted to Regional Sales

PROFILE

Manager APAC. And it was here that I began my relationship with Wallem as they were a client. Towards the end of 2010 I moved back to Europe with EMS as Regional Sales Manager North Europe & UK. After 2 years in Rotterdam I continued this role for 3 more years in Oslo with a special focus on the Norwegian market. It was nice to be back ‘home’ after such a long stretch of time abroad.

Starting with Wallem marks the next chapter of my career and I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with clients and learning from our Wallem experts.

TN: Wallem has a customer-centric culture, how will you get to know our clients? TL: Shipping is a relationship business, and Wallem is famous for a traditional and respectful client service approach. Personally, I believe that with good relationships, comes a high level of trust. This is key. Wallem isn’t just a Ship Management provider, but a very skilled maritime solutions partner to be trusted and relied upon.

My focus will be on spending time with clients, to get to know their business challenges and identify their needs, then apply our knowledge by introducing Wallem experts who will solve their problems.

My hope is that after spending time with me, clients will know that Wallem is a partner ready to help with a broad range of business problems. We’re here to offer solutions well beyond just technical ship management.

Assistance at sea is one of the long-held traditions of our industry, and one that Wallem has proudly been awarded for time and again.

On 1st October 2015, 51 miles north of Haiti, 212-foot cargo ship Minouche was overrun by rough weather generated by Hurricane Joaquin and began taking on water. The crew activated their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and issued a Mayday on VHF which was immediately responded to by Wallem-managed PCTC Cronus Leader.

The Master of Cronus Leader notified our Safety Department in Hong Kong and AMVER of the situation, informing them they were on their way to rescue.

The shore based team at Wallem Hong Kong made contact with USCG Florida who confirmed USCG/ AMVER was already alerted and acting. The USCG dispatched their rescue vessels and air support via helicopter, co-ordinating with Ro-Ro Cronus Leader, the first vessel on the scene.

Cronus Leader, skillfully crewed by Wallem,

bravely battled 30 knot winds and 15 foot waves, showing immense courage to play a pivotal role in this successful rescue mission. Cronus Leader maintained station, providing lee to the casualty and her survivors as they abandoned into life rafts.

All 12 mariners from the Bolivian-flagged Minouche were safely rescued and transported by helicopter to shore in the Bahamas.

We sincerely thank each and every crew member of the Cronus Leader for showing such bravery and fearless endurance on scene. The timely and superbly executed assistance providing lee was of great importance in the positive outcome of this incident.

“Cronus Leader’s presence must have surely been a solace to the crew who had to abandon in life rafts and await pick up via helicopter.” Remarked Vijay Soman, Director, Safety and Insurance, Wallem Ship Management.

Cronus Leader enrolled in Amver on 30th Nov 2008 and already has six Amver Participation Awards under her name.

Wallem Academy“Learning is an experience. everything else is just information.”

These are words from a very wise man, Albert einstein, and they capture the approach to learning at Wallem.

Ben Shao, Head of Learning and Development at Wallem Group, is the learned Maestro behind Wallem’s largest learning

initiative to date, Wallem Academy. Wallem Academy was launched at the beginning of 2015 and includes a program of facilitated (in-person) training and a suite of e-learning courses that focus on communication and management skills.

In the financial year 2014/15 shore-based Wallem staff completed more than 390 training sessions, clocking up over 14,300 hours of formal learning and development. It’s a very impressive statistic.

Wallem Academy: A World Class Learning resource “We are committed to developing people”, declares Ben Shao when asked about Wallem’s training philosophy. He explains that Wallem Academy was

created to support Wallem employee’s self-driven professional and personal development. The global initiative, driven out of the Hong Kong office by Mr Shao, has been developed specifically for Wallem employees. Wallem Academy is a training and development program for all shore-based staff that offers an astounding 189 topics through a combination of Wallem’s e-learning portal, Harvard ManageMentor, and a series of in-person training sessions. The program offers training opportunities for customer service, ship management, presentation skills, technical knowledge, wellness and general education, and many other soft-skill courses.

So how does it work? With a focus on communication and management skills, a relevant learning menu is created for each job level, then employees sit down with their manager and together they craft a personal learning roadmap. Each year that personalised roadmap will be updated to reflect the previous year’s professional achievements.

“Harvard ManageMentor is one of the best e-learning products out there. Most importantly, employees are encouraged to forge their own learning path with full access to all the learning solutions Wallem offers. There is no limit to how many courses employees can complete.” shares Ben Shao. “Our philosophy for people development is that employees need to take ownership

of their own development. Wallem is here to help you with world-class resources but you need to drive this yourself. It’s your career, it’s your future, we are here to facilitate that development.”

“One way we use e-learning is to prepare for instructor-led courses. So for the coaching skills course, which is a full day session, we have a two-hour e-learning preparation module that has to be completed before participants begin the face-to face training. So when you walk in, you don’t walk in cold – there is already contextual knowledge and it accelerates the learning process. It’s very engaging and practical.” notes Ben Shao.

Simultaneously, Mr Shao leads a tailored program called the Management Foundation Program for handpicked, high performing individuals at Wallem. This special initiative utilises a series of renowned training service providers such as Ivey Business School, Kaplan Financial and more. “It’s a best-in-class offering to high-achieving Wallem employees.” he shares.

Partnering With The Best in The Business “We engage Ivey Business School, which recently topped London Business School and INSEAD as the best international business school in Bloomberg Businessweek’s ranking, Kaplan Financial – a global leading financial institution, and Harvard

ManageMentor – these are resources innovative brand leader companies like Google and Apple offer their employees.” says Ben Shao. In December 2015, a hand-picked group of Wallem high-achievers completed a module on Strategy Planning and Execution with Ivey Business School. This external training also offered an opportunity for the trainees to network with professionals from other industries and for them to further develop their business sensitivity beyond the context of ship management and maritime solutions.

The Wallem learning and development program offers a very practical and hands-on, contextual experience. This is the most important element of learning new skills. “In the Management Foundation Program, upon the completion of a training, participants are given an on-the-job assignment, using the techniques and skills they’ve acquired from the training.” says Ben Shao. “Three months later, they reconnect in a half-day workshop to reflect and share how they’ve applied their new skills during work as a peer group. This approach enables outside-of-textbook peer learning and practical application of the skills beyond the classroom setting.” This approach also actively works to

Learning To Serve Our Customers effectively

One of the Wallem Academy’s most popular modules is the Harvard eLearning - Customer Focus module.

Many Wallem offices have made this a mandatory course for all staff. It’s fast becoming one of the most completed modules in the Wallem Academy’s e-learning portal.

“Although we’re in the Maritime sector, we are in the service industry.“ says Ben Shao when sharing an insight into why this module is so popular across the global network.

The course aims to teach a broad spectrum of staff how to better meet the needs of customers, to use customer knowledge to identify ways to deliver additional value and a practical guide to building a customer-focused team.

strengthen Wallem’s network and build connections across divisions and departments. Participants are dealing with real life situations at work, it’s contextual in its structure and very beneficial to clients.

The Success of Wallem Academy “It’s more than classroom learning, throughout the year we’ve promoted a lot of Wallem Academy participants.” delights Ben Shao. “And we’re doing more with less – this streamlined program is a more cost-effective approach to learning and development than in previous years.”

He continues, “We’re tackling this, not just from a corporate training perspective, to drive business results, but from a well being perspective.” In November 2015 Wallem hosted a Wellness Week, with trainings on topics such as Breast Cancer Awareness, General Health Checks, How to Eat Healthy When You're Stressed, CPR courses and even a hike led by our CEO Mr Simon Doughty to conclude the health awareness week.

“Allowing people to see their career path, and understanding how Wallem is committed to its employees, not just from their skill set, but their personal well being. It’s a nice feeling.” concludes Ben Shao.

shipyards and businesses involved with infrastructure and power.

Johan Vermeiren, adds, “Our clients are now commercially active in a market where they have not been very engaged in the past. Vietnam is a market with its own challenges, many ports and a developing economy. Still, many foreign investments are coming in to Vietnam and the country continues to focus on infrastructure work and power plants. Wallem is a neutral partner who can represent clients with both the big shippersand receivers, but also offer their services to local and international logistics companies. We bring cargo handling expertise and are able to offer both cargo and agency services. Finally, our logistics set up allows us to address some of our client’s logistics challenges.”

What Our Clients enjoy Most About Working With Wallem Expertise, reliability and transparency are three factors our Vietnam clients’ value most about working with Wallem. Johan Vermeiren, shares some more insight into what clients enjoy most about working with the Wallem team, “Wallem provides our clients with clear advice, this is coupled with reliable technical support – it's a valuable combination. Further to that, we’re known for our transparent and honest approach to business – Wallem’s approach is very open and we are keen to share all required information through the entire process from inquiry to bidding, and ultimately moving the cargo.”

Vietnam’s Cargo Connections: Solving Our Client’s Cargo Challenges

Vietnam’s shipping and logistics industry is evolving and diversifying, but it’s not an easy market for many

ship owners and logistics players. Power and infrastructure continue to grow in Vietnam, and shipbuilding is also gaining momentum. Freight rates are low and many feel there’s an endless cycle of cheaper offerings as the price war intensifies. This brings the dangers of quality of service and supply chain disruptions. It’s a complex market, but one where Wallem is seeing success.

Since 2010, Wallem has focused on listening to our clients’ business challenges in Vietnam, and in response we’ve grown our own business to meet these needs. In 2013, Wallem began to offer a combination of Ship Agency and Cargo Agency.

Johan Vermeiren, Managing Director, Wallem Logistics Services, speaks of the expansion to Cargo Agency, “More and more of our customers were seeking a partner which also offered commercial expertise. Cargo Agency is a growing business for Wallem in Asia Pacific, we’re broadening our offering of Maritime Solutions, beyond handling ships. Those solutions now include controlling cargo, in response to client needs. Cargo Agency serves as a bridge between the Shipping Agency Services and Logistics Services within Wallem. It’s part of our drive to offer a more comprehensive service to our customers.”

Wallem’s Cargo Agency business is manned by dedicated resources, coordinating Wallem’s regional efforts and orchestrating the need for technical support for inquires. In Vietnam, the team is working with freight forwarders, O&G companies,

"Wallem Vietnam has been appointed as the exclusive commercial agent for Jumbo Shipping (Singapore), a subsidiary of Jumbo Shipping Netherlands, one of the leading heavy lift shipping and offshore transportation companies. Jumbo own a very specialised fleet of about 20 vessels, with lifting capacity of up to 3,000 ton. They have a global tramp service with also some dP vessels for offshore installation jobs. The Wallem Vietnam team will be promoting the Jumbo service to importers and exporters of heavy lift project cargo in Vietnam."

Wallem Maritime Training Centre Odessa, ukraine

Wallem Maritime Training Centre (WMTC), Odessa, is part of Wallem’s Eastern Europe hub. As the name suggests, the centre is located in Odessa, Ukraine, one of the

largest ports on the Black Sea.

Odessa is duly regarded as the capital of Ukrainian maritime industry. It is the leading port since the early 1800s and remains the main shipping business hub of the Ukraine.

Training eastern european Mariners Since 2003 In the spring of 2003, the first training activities took place at WMTC in order to improve the knowledge, understanding and skills of seafarers and maintain the uniform standard of professionalism throughout Wallem. In those first years, the course portfolio was limited, but in the last decade WMTC has grown to offer 17 intensive courses, including Assertiveness Skills Development, Bulk Carrier Safety, Bridge Team Management, Container Carrier Safety, Command and Leadership, Environmental Officer Training, and more.

Attracting eastern europe’s Most experienced Mariners Wallem’s Eastern European pool of more than 500 seafarers consists almost entirely of Officers. The WMTC works to build on the skills of already experienced Officers making their first entry to Wallem. The centre also

trains Officers with knowledge gaps highlighted in their appraisal reports. WMTC faculties work on filling in the knowledge gaps and giving Wallem-specific knowledge to new joiners of all levels.

Trained by experienced Maritime Leaders WMTC Odessa proudly boasts a faculty of experienced trainers, with a breadth of knowledge that spans the entire industry. The centre’s three most prominent trainers are Capt. Yuri Poganshev, Capt. Oleksii Chepok, and Chief Engineer Oleksandr Vovk. All WMTC trainers are involved in Wallem’s continuous professional development process. These three trainers work under the leadership of Capt Srirang Manjeshwar, Director, Training Centre.

full Mission Bridge Simulator WMTC Odessa utilises a Full Mission Bridge simulator based on the leading NT Pro 5000 software from Transas. Engine training is simulated on ERS 5000. To meet Wallem’s own high standards, and our clients’ expectations, these simulators are used to implement additional trainings (on top of national requirements) for deck and engine staff. Training officers use Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator for cargo operations training.

The WMTC Odessa training complex was opened in October 2014 and remains among the most sophisticated simulation facilities in the region.

Celebrating the opening of Wallem Maritime Services (Shenzhen) Ltd

Wallem Maritime Services (Shenzhen) Ltd, based in the Nanshan District, was formally opened on 4th November 2015. Captain Wang Xi Qiang, Wallem Maritime

Services General Manager, leads the office with extensive Wallem experience, having worked as a Wallem China representative for more than seven years.

The opening of Wallem Maritime Services (Shenzhen) is a significant development for Wallem’s business in China. As the only international ship manager accredited by the Maritime Safety Administration of the People's Republic of China to recruit seafarers directly from China, this Wallem office offers incredible opportunity for our clients. Wallem teams in China will continue to work closely with our existing team in Dalian and with Wallem's manning agents, located mainly in the North of China.

Kinny Pun, General Manager, Fleet Personnel, noted, “I am very proud and honoured that Wallem is the first and only foreign shipping company to 100% own a manning agency in China. This allows us to directly provide Chinese seafarers to vessels managed by Wallem, including bulk carriers, oil tankers, LPG carriers, PCCs and more. The opening places Wallem in an even better position to set standards and drive loyalty, leadership, safety and commercial awareness amongst Wallem's Chinese seafarers.”

“The Wallem Shenzhen team has already recruited and trained our 2015 batch of Wallem cadets who are now assigned onboard Wallem’s fleet of Hong Kong flagged bulk carriers.” concluded Pun.

David Price, Managing Director, Ship Management, at Wallem Group added, “Wallem Maritime Services (Shenzhen) unlocks immense resources and business opportunities for our clients. Wallem will be the exclusive international ship manager recruiting from China, but further to this, our Wallem training centre will actively work to produce world-class mariners, reducing claims, LTIs and PSC detentions through ongoing training and awareness.”

Intermarine Celebrates 25 Years in Global Transport

The team from Wallem was proudly invited to help celebrate Intermarine’s 25th Anniversary in 2015. Nigel Moore, Director Sales & Marketing at Wallem Group, also attended their celebration

party in Houston, USA where Intermarine's senior global management team was present.

Intermarine is a global leader in the transport of project, breakbulk and heavy lift cargo. Wallem has an established relationship with Intermarine, with a particularly strong relationship in Asia.

Christian Andersen, Intermarine Managing Director reflected on the partnership between Intermarine and Wallem “In early 2013, Intermarine and Wallem established an official working relationship in Japan and have since successfully increased both companies presences in the Japanese market commercially and operationally. The relationship has been a success mainly due to the dedicated Intermarine and Wallem personnel. We believe it’s only the beginning of a growing, strong partnership throughout the region.

“Japanese clients value honesty, reliability and personal contact, which aligns with our core values and have been the key and foundation in the working relationship with the Wallem team.

“Intermarine would like to thank Wallem for their professionalism and investing resources to accomplish a ‘win-win’ partnership between our Japanese clients, Intermarine and Wallem.

“We look forward to continued success and working with Wallem in the future.“

Wallem exhibited for the third time at the Breakbulk Americas in Houston, USA on 5-8 October 2015. The exhibition is the largest exhibition of its kind in North

America, with top-tier shippers attending along with breakbulk and project cargo service providers.

Our teams from China, Hong Kong and the Philippines worked together to meet with potential and existing breakbulk customers.

Manning the booth was our Sales and Marketing Director, Nigel Moore, along with Jack Hu from Wallem’s China office, also joined by Antonio N Calingo Jr and Pompom C Vasquez from our Philippines team.

“The breakbulk sector is a target for us in the coming year and it was good to see such an experienced Wallem team promoting our services at this event. It is also essential that we build close relationships with our existing principals and this was a perfect opportunity to spend time with several valued clients” said Nigel Moore.

Wallem Celebrations

As the year came to a close, Wallem teams came together to celebrate important festivals

and the end of another calendar year.

In the Philippines, Wallem’s Innovative Solution teams held their annual Christmas party in Clark on Friday 11 December, and the theme was formal Filipiniana. Wallem CFO Paul Moore attended on behalf of the senior management team and everyone had a wonderful night.

In conjunction with Malaysian Independence Day, Wallem’s local office held an annual dinner event for all our staff. 132 people from ten branches across Malaysia attended the fun filled event with the theme

‘Malaysian Nite’. The night featured dance performances, a cultural show, a games show and lucky draw.

In Singapore, the Wallem team celebrated their Annual Dinner & Dance on 9 October 2015. The theme was SG50, in line with Singapore's 50th Anniversary and employees came dressed in Red & White. Paul Moore, Wallem CFO; Debbie Mannas, Group HR Head; and Fared Khan, Fleet Personnel Director, joined the event. It was an evening filled with games, performances and a surprise segment by Debbie Mannas. Together with a live band, she entertained the crowd with some upbeat songs!

Wallem India celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, on 10 November 2015. This year the theme was "Maharashtra - Aamchi Mati, Aamchi Mansa" which translates to "Maharashtra - Our Land, Our People". The afternoon began with a lucky draw and a variety of authentic Maharashtrian dishes were then served for lunch. It was a beautiful sight to

see the staff members dressed up in traditional Maharashtrian attire.

Wallem’s Hong Kong staff also celebrated Diwali on 14 November at the Indian Recreation Club. The evening kicked off with an introduction of Diwali and how this festival is celebrated in different parts of India. There were performances from our staff’s children, games, food and dance. Everyone had a great time and we’d like to share a big ‘thank you’ to all who helped organize the successful event.

The Europe office started the festive season with their annual dinner celebration held in Germany. This year, David Price, Managing Director, Wallem Ship Management, and Glyn Thompson, Oil Major Relationship and Assurance Manager at Wallem Ship Management were able to join the team and all had an enjoyable evening.

These are just a sample of the many celebrations held for Wallem teams across the globe.

In January 2016 we bid a bitter-sweet farewell to Vijay Soman, Director of Safety – Insurance – QMS at Wallem Ship Management. After 43 years of loyal service at Wallem, we congratulate Vijay on his retirement and

wish him a great life ahead.

Wallem is famous for fostering careers and shepherding talented seafarers from ship to shore. Vijay Soman has spent 43 years, 3 months and 25 days at Wallem, travelling that exact path – from Cadet to esteemed shore-based business leader as Director of Safety in Wallem’s Hong Kong office. His career is an inspiration to young seafarers the world over.

Like all seafarers, Vijay’s career has placed him at the centre of historic moments. During the Iran-Iraq war, Vijay was in command of the Wallem-managed tanker

Gentle Breeze, the ship came under fire and suffered damage. This dangerous incident is a testament to Vijay’s leadership, he delivered the crew to safety.

Not only is Vijay a well respected leader on board and ashore, he is also known for his great sense of fun and his contributions to Wallem’s sporting teams, including his time as the Captain of Wallem’s cricket team and scaling Kota Kinabalu with the Wallem expedition. Vijay’s wonderful costumes and lively attitude will be missed at Wallem’s annual dinners in the future.

“With the greatest respect, we thank Vijay for his service and wish him well in his retirement. His career is another shining example of the careers we build at Wallem.” Simon Doughty, Wallem Group CEO.

“We wish Khun Javee all the best after he retires in 2016. During our last two years of interaction, Javee was a very key person to deal with all matters of pricing and operations very efficiently.

He worked tirelessly during our emergency calls and responded to all our enquiries very efficiently. He was one person we always relied upon during crisis moments in some critical new ports.

We will miss him during his absence from our regular business transactions in future. On behalf of everyone in MLS we wish him all the very best and good health.”

“Enjoy your well-deserved retirement in 2016. We will always remember the evening you came over to Phuket to meet us and take us out for a fantastic dinner in Phuket.

Thanks for all the work you’ve done for Sevenstar and Spliethoff. If I recall correctly, you also dealt with Mr Harry Heijst of Spliethoff many years ago. So you and the Spliethoff Group go back a long time.”

The Women of Wallem (WOW) chapters are an important support network for our seafarers and their families.

These incredible women contribute a great amount to our communities and we thank them for their selfless hard work.

In October 2015, WOW officers and members, together with the Westminster team and Wallem cadets, drove 84 kilometers south from Manila to Pila, Laguna to plant 200 fruit bearing trees.

The day of tree planting served as part of a massive forest rehabilitation program driven by the Philippines government. The program seeks to grow 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide within a period of six years up to 2016.

Apart from being a reforestation initiative, the program is also seen as a climate change mitigation strategy as it seeks to enhance the country’s forest stock to absorb carbon dioxide, which is largely blamed for global warming. It is also designed to reduce poverty, providing alternative livelihood activities for marginalized upland and lowland households relating to seedling production and care and maintenance of newly planted trees.
