DECEMBER 2018 NEW DELHI 3

Dear Readers

Merry Christmas!

India has already entered into the nearing phase of 2019 election season. The BJP came to power through a historic win in 2014 after giving a hope to Indian electorate that Ram temple will be built to honor the long standing demand of majority of Hindu people. After BJP came into the power in 2014, BJP also won in UP, which increased the hope of hindus that temple will be built, more so with a Hindu oriented CM candidate Yogi Aadityanath, a former Mahant of Gorakhnath temple, Gorakhpur, UP. Ram temple construction is expected to create huge political mileage for any party succeeding in getting the Ram temple built. As BJP is expected to gain this political mileage based on its track record of supporting the Ram temple construction movement including the famous RathYatra led by L.K. Advani. Being afraid of the potential success of BJP, Congress has been trying to block this process of temple building by appealing to the Supreme Court of India to delay the verdict to post 2019 LokSabha election apart from regularly attacking BJP for not doing enough for construction of Ram temple. Other opposition parties have been supporting Congress in their opposition to the BJP.

All the opposition parties reflect no respect for the interest for the nation or the interest for majority community that is hindu in their conduct while the country is called Hindustan.

Similar opposition is also against of renaming the towns by their ancient names which were changed by the Islamic invaders (Mughals) for e.g. Faizabad renamed as Ayodhaya, Allahabad renamed as Prayagraj. Through these initiatives BJP is fulfilling long standing expectation and dreams of majority community which are not expressed violently. Beyond all these political controversies few basic facts need be appreciated, first every invader gives its priority for destruction of the cultures and religious beliefs, monuments of the invaded country/society. The destruction of Ram temple by Babar and construction of Babri Masjid under his directions is a proof of the intention of the invading

rulers to destroy the local culture and belief systems and impose the Islamic culture by constructing a mosque. The act of converting the name of Prayagraj to Allahabad by the Mughals is also similar to that of construction of masjid in place of Ram temple.

Secondly, if a hooligan or gunda, from another community like ISLAM or Christianity, occupies your house, forcing you to live in a corner and leaves the house after years, obviously, ransacking your place of worship and leaving imprints of their long stay through their names and markings. What will be the first thing you do when you get the house back? Obviously, one will clean the house, specifically the markings and imprints left by the occupant and reinstate your place of worship. Based on this logic the first government after independence should have cleaned the house of India by undoing all the wrong done by the invading cultures like Muslims (Mughal) and Christians (English). These were not done till 70 years after independence forcing the country men to live under the stress of the symbols of invading nations and cultures for e.g. Mosque in place of Ram temple, mosque inside a premise of Mathura temple, mosque in place of Vishvanath Temple. These initiatives, including construction of Ram temple, renaming of the towns from the name given by the invading power to its original names are desired steps to be taken by any responsible government irrespective of political identity as a pure governance role. Similarly opposition political entities need be responsible enough to look beyond their political and vote bank interest and respect the decision and actions that is desired for a nation as a whole and not oppose the government for just the sake of opposition which is ultimately expected to damage the electoral prospects.

This issue covers a lead story on TRRAIN Trusts. This issue covers the interview of Dr.Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairperson, Niti Aayog and the Guest Column of Dr. Srikant Sharma on Pollution.

Q in the traditional era, then Planning commission’s development planning centered on economics only,

neglecting all other sub-systems of development like socio-cultural, governance, political or environmental systems. is niti aayog under PM Modi, attempting to pay due attention to these systems which were neglected in nehru era?

A The mandate of Niti Aayog is completely different from the Planning Commission; therefore it is not a

successor institution to the planning commission. The principle mandates of the Niti Aayog are:-

a) Firstly to promote Co-operative Federalism, this is not to behave like a donor to the State Government but like a partner for developing state specific development blueprints. India has diversity because of which we cannot have a PAN-INDIA plan.

b) The second is very important; we are developing Competitive Federalism by which we are trying to get the states to get to compete with each other on the basis of their ranking on the basis of their development.

c) In the past, Planning commission never took care of the innovation eco-system, we started Atal Innovation Mission, which is setting up 5000 tinkering labs in the primary schools and also The Atal Incubation Centers, this mission has a very wide scope and finally Niti Aayog is a think tank, we have to consult with all external stake holders, bring fresh ideas in the government and also to make sure that those ideas are implemented, thus Niti Aayog is focusing on all the different aspects of the society.

Q During the times of Planning commission, development was limited to centralized planning

without adequate monitoring, leading to many of the plans not getting successfully implemented. the recent bank scam is a classic example of governance without focus on respect of monitoring and control at multiple levels starting from PnB branch level to RBi. is niti aayog planning to address this issue by promoting a culture of monitoring and control at all levels?

A Maybe it was not happening in the past but now it is being carried out with full force, for example one

of our major program, Aspirational Districts Program, for which we have selected 115 districts, and we are monitoring the work being done by the district administration in those districts. We also have engaged two third party agencies who give us feedback and data on the happening so that the official data can be verified. Planning Commission didn’t do anything about the manipulation of data, we are making a change.

Q employment being a major challenge for govt. of india and PM Modi, is niti aayog working for

recommending innovative methods for creating employment?

A Our focus is completely on employment because we think that employment generation is principle

objective and growth can come after, based on this principle we have prepared a document called The Strategy of New India at 75, which means when India completes 75 years of independence that is 2022, it has 41 chapters and in each chapter, we have defined a target and we have suggested what are the ways forward after identifying the challenges. We also have a lot of focus on Small and Medium enterprises, they are the generators of employment. So we believe that employment is the key and due to these steps you can see the employment improving.

Q is it possible for niti aayog to set up a separate wing for designing and implementing regular

monitoring and evaluation reports focusing on key development sectors of india?

A To improve the accountability and governance within the system and for this we have established

Development Monitoring Evaluation Office. DMEO does real time monitoring of actual performance of different ministries and reports it regularly to The Prime Minister.

Our focus is completely on employment because we think that employment generation is principle

objective and growth can come after, based on this principle we have prepared a document called The

Strategy of New India at 75, which means when India completes 75

years of independence that is 2022, it has 41 chapters and in each

the challenges. We also have a lot of focus on Small and Medium

Q PM Modi has achieved a great milestone by taking yoga to the world stage through un resolution by

making 21 June as international Day of yoga. spirituality being the essential foundation/pre-requisite for achievement of all development goals, Won’t it be appropriate for niti aayog to initiate a move for incorporating yoga as a part of sDg?

A This can only be done in the next round as the Social Development Goals (SDG) are now finalized,

they cannot be changed until 2030 but I think some of the SDGs consulting with Health and Welfare includes holistic development, that is not just physical health but mental and spiritual health also. In that sense it is covered but more importantly that government has set up AYUSH Department to look after yoga and health. We are on the way for making Yoga a part of SDG. Earlier, these things were considered inferior but now the situation has been reversed.

Q csR as a domain, though growing in dimensions, the understanding of CSR as a beneficial tool for

the companies and its ability to make impact on the ground is not appreciated by large percentage of corporate leaders. Do you see any role of government in motivating leaders to engage in csR activities?

A The Government has passed the law, we are encouraging the people, the government is also

asking the public sector units to set aside minimum 2%, they are doing that job but I think over and above that it has to be more of a self-regulatory move and it should be social movement so that the Indian corporates will understand that being a part of social welfare is good for the company itself. I think this will take time but slowly they will realize that doing good is doing well.

Q government seems to be focusing only on csR spending on record not on the quality of spending

(Outflow) and the impact it made (Outcome). Your comment

A Ministry of Corporate Affairs has now started monitoring quality of the CSR programs and there

can be some third party evaluation and may be Ministry of Corporate Affairs can give some rewards for good corporate.

Q csR fund has a huge potential for taking technology from lab to land with a complete

corporate backing. this demands emotional engagement of corporate leaders. is there a possible role for niti aayog in actualizing this potential?

A We are trying to do this with Atal Innovation Centers and we are working with CSIR so that their

labs can become more connected to ground realities and also The Prime Minister has a given a call for improving the lab. We will very soon give a review of the impact, so there is a role of Niti Aayog and our member Dr. VK Saraswat, head of DRDO, is very active in making sure that all the research that is done in the CSIR Lab or any other lab can be passed on to the ground level.

Q there are too many csR awards irrespective of the csR impact. your comments.

A I think there should be only one award which should be given by Ministry of Corporate Affairs

rather than this clutter.

Q anything you would like to share with csR vision.

A I think there are few things to which Corporates can give their attention, one is malnutrition of

children, I must bring it to your notice that 38% of our children are suffering from this and it is simply not acceptable to a country like ours, so I think all the corporates can focus there. Similarly, for our women around 50% are anemic, we still have leprosy in our country; corporates should work on this to get the country rid of these stigmas. I think this will be the best use of CSR funds. u

The Government has passed the law, we are encouraging the people, the government is also

asking the public sector units to set aside minimum 2%, they are doing that job but I think over and above

that it has to be more of a self-regulatory move and it should be social movement so that the Indian

corporates will understand that being a part of social welfare is good for the company itself. I think this will

take time but slowly they will realize that doing good is doing well.

NEW DELHI DECEMBER 201812

As a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility Program, Helmet Saves, Exide Life Insurance held an awareness

drive at key locations in the city. The activity, conducted in collaboration with Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Seshadripuram, saw students gather at the busy junctions of Chalukya Circle and Millers Road, among other locations, to convey the message on importance of helmet safety for children.

The awareness drive was inaugurated by Sarah Fathima, Dy. Commissioner of Traffic Police to show the solidarity of the Bengaluru Traffic Police in furthering the cause of reducing road fatalities amongst children.

The activities included students marching on the roads holding placards with strong messaging and handing over leaflets on helmet safety for children to two wheeler riders. A group of Chaitanya School students wearing helmets and Exide Life Insurance volunteers took over high traffic roads and junctions like Millers Road and Chalukya Circle, where they engaged with two wheeler riders especially those with their child riding pillion without a helmet.

Commenting on the initiative, Antony John, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic Central said “The Bengaluru Traffic Police has consistently undertaken campaigns to increase awareness on road safety. We are pleased to see that Exide Life Insurance is committed towards educating the citizens on importance of helmets. Bengaluru Traffic Police supports Helmet Saves Children Week to increase awareness on road safety of our children by encouraging both parents and children to wear helmets while riding a two wheeler”

Mohit Goel, Director - Marketing and Direct Channel, Exide Life Insurance said, “Last year we conducted a survey on helmet wearing habits and received alarming insights regarding child pillions riders - such as 3 of 4 children do not wear a helmet while riding pillion. As per recent UN Motorcycle Helmet Study, wearing an appropriate helmet improves the chances of survival by 42% and helps avoid 69% of injuries to riders. It is crucial that we address this issue by creating awareness among both parents and children. We are grateful to Bengaluru Traffic Police and Sri Chaitanya Techno School for supporting Helmet Saves

Children Week and helping us spread the message.”Dr. Soya Nambiar, Principal, Sri Chaitanya Techno

School, said, “It is common today to see a child pillion rider clinging on to an adult during motorcycle rides without adequate protection. Such attitude of adults towards young pillion riders is quite dangerous. We are glad to join hands with Exide Life Insurance in raising awareness on the need of helmets for children. As a conscientious school we support Helmet Saves Children Week to ensure that the message of child safety reaches the correct audience.”

Helmet Saves, a robust CSR campaign was launched by Exide Life Insurance in 2017 to create awareness on the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler. As a part of the campaign last year, a survey was conducted on the helmet wearing habits among riders. The trends revealed were startling - nearly 50% of parents would allow their children to ride a motorcycle helmetless, and 75% see

such child pillions riding unprotected at least once a day.

The alarming trend of children not wearing helmets despite being one of the most vulnerable sections of the society, spurred the company into expanding its focus this year to Child safety.

The company launched ‘Helmet Saves Children’ Week with a catchy rap song ‘Voice of Children’ on

14th November 2018 on the occasion of Children’s Day, which not only entertains but also brings forth the important message in a seamless fashion.

Through its Helmet Saves, Exide Life Insurance remains committed towards spreading awareness on helmet safety through continuous engagement by reaching as many Indians as possible.about exide life insurance company limitedExide Life Insurance Company Limited, an established and profitable life insurance company, commenced operations in 2001-02 and is headquartered in Bengaluru. NEW DELHI DECEMBER 201814

As part of the #MumbaiByDesign initiative, Pearl Academy hosted children from Salaam Baalak Trust, an

NGO that works for street children, at its campus at Andheri East in Mumbai.

MumbaiByDesign is a design initiative conceptualized by Pearl Academy that demonstrates the power of design thinking to reimagine Mumbai with the aim of developing sustainable solutions to the city’s many functional and environmental problems.

The first phase of the initiative was held in two segments. In the first segment, children from the Salaam Baalak Trust were invited for an immersive workshop on Art and Design. The children were divided into three groups, based on age, and were taught various primary and secondary colors associated with particular shapes, creating new colors, layout design and design composition.

In the second segment, Salaam Balak Trust assigned a portion of a large wall in its Andheri shelter for Pearl students to paint. The three-day activity was an exhilarating experience for the students and faculty as they created the framework and background of what became the #MumbaiByDesign wall. The students used the design concepts taught during the workshops and put them to practical use. The painted wall is an ode to Mumbai city, which is full of the contrasting hustle and bustle, along with the peace that the sea brings along.

The second phase of this initiate will be a design festival which will be held at Pearl Academy Mumbai Campus and will be dedicated to workshops, panel discussion and competitions for students from colleges across the city. This

will be a two day event which will be held in January, 2019. Speaking on the occasion, Professor Nandita Abraham,

President, Pearl Academy said, “Pearl Academy is delighted to take the Mumbai By Design concept to the next level. This initiative aims to connect with young minds and help them use their innate creativity to come up with sustainable solutions for the city. Mumbai is the city of dreams. We have taken upon ourselves the responsibility to set in motion conversations that intrigue, question, observe and offer solutions to the very many aspects of what keeps this city ticking. We are happy that our students got an opportunity to paint the Andheri shelter of Salaam Baalak Trust and we look forward to more such opportunities in future.”about Pearl academyPearl Academy, India’s leading institution in design, fashion, business and media has been a catalyst for success of the students across creative industries for over two decades. Astellas Pharma Incorporative announced the launch of the Astellas Global Health Foundation (AGHF), a

new international philanthropic organization dedicated to improving access to health in underserved global communities. Key areas of focus for the AGHF initially will be neglected tropical and communicable diseases, children’s health and mental health in low-income communities and low-and middle-income countries where Astellas, a company dedicated to improving the health of people around the world, does not have a commercial presence. Additionally, AGHF will fund programs that build healthier communities and provide disaster preparedness and relief in these same geographies.

The Astellas Global Health Foundation merges three former philanthropic entities – the Astellas USA Foundation (AUSF), the Astellas European Foundation (AEF), and the Astellas Asia-Oceania Foundation (AAOF) – into one organization.

The goal is to support some of the world’s most vulnerable populations in areas with high child mortality rates, low life expectancies, and insufficient access to health. Since 2005, the three foundations have contributed nearly $25 million to charities and partners aligned with each foundation’s focus areas.

Access to health remains a significant challenge for underserved populations in low- and middle-income countries. A recent report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine calls for urgent, comprehensive efforts to address what it calls the “global quality chasm” in healthcare worldwide. The report finds up

to eight million deaths occur annually in low- and middle-income countries due to poor-quality healthcare.

In its first year, the Astellas Global Health Foundation will send a request for proposal to eligible organizations that primarily focus on strengthening health infrastructure and enhancing the availability and accessibility of quality healthcare with a focus on three key areas in low-and middle-income communities:• Children’s health: The Foundation seeks to address high

child mortality rates by supporting programs that, for example, improve access to preventative measures such as medicines, nutrition or vaccines for children in need;

• Mental health: The Foundation seeks to improve access to mental health diagnosis and treatment, especially in individuals experiencing life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and heart disease;

• Neglected tropical and communicable diseases: The Foundation will support programs that improve access to health for major communicable diseases and neglected tropical diseases in support of the WHO goals for control, elimination and eradication.Grants that were made to organizations prior to the

formation of the Astellas Global Health Foundation will be honored through the term of the commitments.

i National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. Up to 8 Million Deaths Occur in Low- and Middle-Income Countries Yearly Due to Poor-Quality Health Care, Says New Report; Major Quality Chasm Must Be Fixed in Order to Reap Benefits of Universal Health Coverage.

Bancalimentos, a social enterprise that exchanges recyclable goods for essential household goods with

vulnerable rural populations in Boyaca, Colombia, joins Business Call to Action (BCtA) with a commitment to increase food security and generate sustainable incomes for 12,500 people by 2022. Established in 2015, Bancalimentos provides essential household goods such as food, medicine and agricultural inputs in exchange for household organic waste and recyclables.

Launched in 2008, BCtA aims to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by challenging companies to develop inclusive business models that engage people with less than US$10 per day in purchasing power (in 2015 dollars) as consumers, producers, suppliers and distributors. It is supported by several international organizations and hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

In rural Colombia, low income rural communities are made vulnerable by food insecurity and a lack of economic opportunities. It is common that families do not have access to a sustainable and secure supply of basic household foods and medicine. Additionally, poor waste management infrastructure has created environmental and health risks for those in living on the bottom of the economic pyramid.

Bancalimentos’ innovative business model addresses each of these issues by creating a circular economy where the social enterprise buys household waste from participating families, and then sells it as raw material to the local recycling industry.

Bancalimentos then purchases large volumes of food, medicine and other basic goods that are sold back to rural communities at affordable prices.

By doing this, Bancalimentos not only provides a sustainable and low-cost source of basic household items and a nutritional insurance, but it also encourages a change of habits in waste disposal and contributes to improved

living environment, emissions reductions and recycling infrastructure.

Clients can deposit their household waste such as plastic bottles and glass at various Bancalimentos locations, strategically placed around the municipality of Boyaca. Each waste deposit will add to the balance on the customer’s savings account, which they can use to purchase nutritious food, agricultural products, medicine and some essential services.

The innovation of Bancalimentos is also reflected in their 22 distribution points, which are all managed by local women. Eighty-five percent of Bancalimentos’ clients are female heads of household benefit from being able to convert

waste into income, and can access a comprehensive range of products at a fair price without having to travel long distances. The empowerment of women through the generation of real purchasing power and access to food has been highly effective.

“The loyalty of our customers have always been – and still are – the most important asset of our company, as our business model was developed by and for the rural populations with limited access to basic goods and services. Generating empathy and trust among our customers as well as expanding our line of products

and services will allow us to scale up in other regions,” Bancalimentos CEO Olga Yanneth Bocarejo Buitrago said.about BancalimentosBancalimentos is a social enterprise, developed by and for rural base of the pyramid populations in the Department of Boyaca that provides commodities to rural families, such as medicines, agricultural inputs, staple foods as well as other services such as microcredit in exchange for organic waste and recyclables. Bancalimentos then sells the gathered trash as raw material to the recycling industry, and with the financial return purchases large volumes of basic food, medicines and other basic goods that are then sold at affordable prices to rural BdP populations.

Keep America Beautiful and The Coca-Cola Foundation on America Recycles Day, announced the opening of

the application period for the 2018 Keep America Beautiful Coca-Cola Public Spaces Recycling Bin Grant Program. In its 12th year, the initiative is designed to increase access to recycling in community public spaces across America. Grant applications will be available online through Dec. 30 (11:59 p.m. EST), 2018. For the past 11 years, The Coca-Cola Foundation has supported the program, which has donated recycling bins to more than 1,000 communities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Over the history of the program, more than 36,000 public space recycling bins have been awarded, providing opportunities for recycling on the go to more than 2 million people daily.

The 2018 program will distribute 4,500 recycling bins in public space locations ranging from athletic fields to fairs and festivals to downtown street-scapes and playgrounds and other on-the-go settings. The program is funded through a $350,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation to Keep America Beautiful, which in turn awards recycling bins through a competitive, merit-based application process.

“Since its inception in 2007, the grant program has made impressive strides toward expanding recycling in public spaces,” said Randy Hartmann, senior director of affiliate operations for Keep America Beautiful. “Through these grants, The Coca-Cola Foundation is reducing two of the primary barriers for on-the-go recycling – accessibility and convenience.”

“Community recycling is one of the key ways The Coca-Cola Foundation is helping communities address litter and support the environment. In partnership with Keep America Beautiful, we can help communities reduce litter by offering grants for recycling bins in parks, recreation areas, campuses and city streets,” said Helen Smith Price, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation.

In addition to the Foundation’s support, earlier this year, The Coca-Cola Company announced a global goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of 100 percent of the bottles and cans it places in the market by 2030. about the coca-cola foundationThe Coca-Cola Foundation is the global philanthropic arm of The Coca-Cola Company. At the Mandela 100, HP announced a new commitment to reach 100,000 learners across Africa over the next

three years through the HP Foundation’s HP LIFE program, and kicked off the commitment by opening a new tech-enabled HP LIFE Center in South Africa. HP’s pledge supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 and furthers the company’s goals to enable better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025 and to enroll a million HP LIFE users between 2016 and 2025, as outlined in the HP 2017 Sustainable Impact Report.

By 2030, Africa will be home to 32% of the population under the age of 30, and the largest working age population by 2035. Yet, today’s youth unemployment in Africa is up to 3x higher than adult unemployment. HP LIFE offers free, online learning for users to gain the skills to start and grow their own business or improve their employment opportunities. Building on the success of this global program, HP is working with partners to open technology-enabled HP LIFE innovation centers to further support entrepreneurship and workforce development across the continent.

“We believe that education is a human right, that technology in the classroom is a critical component for a 21st century education, and that in today’s economy our learning is never done,” said Nate Hurst, Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer, HP. “Africa is experiencing rapid urbanization and digitization—and it’s essential that people have access to learn skills for the work of tomorrow. This new HP LIFE Center provides a launch pad for innovation and opportunity across the continent.”

In 2017, on the global stage at the Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany, HP announced a commitment to enabling better learning outcomes for 100 million people by 2025. The commitment to education is a part of HP’s broader Sustainable Impact strategy – a strategy to use the scope, scale and expertise of HP to drive positive, lasting change for the planet, its people and the communities where they live, work and do business.

“Sustainable Impact is fundamental to our reinvention and core to achieving our vision – to create technology that makes life better for everyone, everywhere,” said Hurst.

movement since 2013, including supporting the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, a first for South Africa. Ahead of the December 2 festival in Johannesburg, HP ran several awareness and engagement building activities to highlight the partnership and HP’s commitment to Sustainable Impact, and to engage customers, employees and the public in acting on pressing global issues.

NEW DELHI DECEMBER 201828

Every holiday season, Sodexo dining teams across more than 650 university locations extend their service spirit to

students in need. Here are six great examples of partnerships with students, faculty and University leadership that are making an impact beyond the classroom.

Annually, the Creighton University Dining team looks for ways to meet the needs of hungry students. One of Creighton Dining’s anti-hunger initiatives includes tasking students with assembling grocery bags, containing enough non-perishables for five meals, for college students facing hunger. Additionally, Creighton Dining has collected $295 in donations from students, which the dining team will match at the end of the month, to fund and fill the University’s food pantry, the Creighton Cupboard.

Similar to the Creighton Cupboard, New Mexico State University (NMSU) operates the Aggie Cupboard, a free service for NMSU students and staff in need. This holiday

season, New Mexico State University asks community members to donate reusable shopping bags filled with healthy and nutritious non-perishable items to feed those who are food insecure during the holiday season.

Sodexo at the University of Tulsa is always active in the fight against hunger. Since the spring of 2018, the team has encouraged students to donate meals from their dining plans for food insecure students. To date, approximately 100 meals have been donated.

Much like Sodexo at University of Tulsa, the University of Denver Dining team is addressing food insecurity on campus through its Swipe Out Hunger program, a nationwide initiative aimed at ending hunger on college campuses.

The team collects meal plan donations from students and adds the donated plans to cards of students who have been identified by the University. The gifted plans are then ready to be used at the start of the new school year.

The Greyhound Meal Exchange at Eastern New Mexico State University is another great example of the team’s partnership with the University. The program combines donated meals from student meal plans and monetary donations from faculty to support food insecure students on campus. With an $8 donation, the program can provide one meal to a student, anonymously. To date, the program has generated $3,040 in donations.

George Mason University is also active in the fight against student hunger through initiatives including the dining team’s Thanksgiving Back event, where students packed 200 non-perishable lunches and donated $1 each to the student-run pantry, the Patriot Pantry.

In 1996, Sodexo created Stop Hunger, an employee led effort to reduce food insecurity throughout the nation and in 1999, the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation was created to ensure that every child in the United States, especially those most at risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life.

Sodexo’s work to fight hunger follows the entire student journey from primary to higher education, and as part of the organization’s promise to improve Quality of Life, Sodexo works closely with its university partners to make college students’ next meal the least of their worries.about sodexo stop hunger foundation

The Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation works with and through partners to help end childhood hunger in the United States because no child should be hungry today or risk being hungry again tomorrow. Sodexo, Inc., which funds all administrative costs, and the nonprofit Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, mobilize experts, innovators, volunteers and donors to feed children; to advocate for policies to end childhood hunger; and to implement innovative potential solutions, particularly those designed by youth. In 2017, Sodexo contributed over 154,000 in volunteer hours and since 1996 has leveraged nearly $32 million in grant dollars to help end childhood hunger.

Falling annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and on the heels of the frenzied shopping days of Black Friday and

Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is a global giving movement which designates this day as one to “help others through the gift of your time, donations, goods or your voice.” In 2017, only the sixth year of the event, #GivingTuesday raised $274 million for charities across the United States.

YouGiveGoods, the innovative giving platform dedicated to delivering brand-new, donated items to people (and pets) in need all across the country, is celebrating #GivingTuesday with a special offer. On November 27 all goods donations of $50+ purchased on the site will earn a 10% cash gift from YouGiveGoods to the selected charity. YouGiveGoods hopes that the additional cash gift will encourage potential donors to be a part of #GivingTuesday with a donation of most-needed goods to charity.

“People love the simplicity and transparency of purchasing goods for donation online,” YouGiveGoods president, Lisa Tomasi, explains. “Around the holidays we are in the mode of gift-giving and YouGiveGoods enables you to give a real gift, whether it be a coat, a toy, socks, blanket or even diapers or food, to a stranger in need. These tangible gifts are a very personal and warm expression of caring this

time of year.” YouGiveGoods has been working to get goods to those

in need since its inception in 2011. Companies have discovered that YouGiveGoods is a great addition to their CSR program. YouGiveGoods adds value by providing a free service to engage employees in meaningful, trackable, impactful giving. Companies such as Aetna, Northrop Grumman, and Fidelity Investments have run successful national campaigns serving their corporate missions while allowing individual offices to support the local charity of their choice.

Finally, it’s important to remember that while #GivingTuesday is a momentous day of giving it is meant to be about more than just the single day. #GivingTuesday marks the kick off to the charitable giving season. An astounding 30% of total annual philanthropic giving is done in December. Therefore, if donations fall short in December, nonprofits have reason to be concerned about their operations for the entire following year.

YouGiveGoods believes that when you make it easier to give, more people will give. And the added incentive of an additional cash gift on #GivingTuesday should help kick off the giving season with a bang.

One man’s vision based on his experience and insights into the retail industry has led to the creation of an institution like TRRAIN for empowering this industry in India, which was the need of the hour. This story of TRRAIN reflects how the insight of a man into an industry can influence the process of change and progress of that industry through an institution playing a catalytic role relevant for the progress.

TRRAIN (Trust for Retailers & Retail Associates of India) is a public charitable trust with an aim to be a catalyst for change in the retail industry, with a vision to empower people in retail. It is an entity with

the right amount of commitment and the right amount of enthusiasm to make a positive impact in retail and especially in the lives of people in retail.

The brainchild of Mr. B.S. Nagesh, TRRAIN was born after an in-depth research that was conducted amongst employees and employers, both, in modern and traditional retail. This study, conducted by an independent body, indicated that a vast majority of people working in the retail sector hardly ever felt a sense of pride or dignity because of their work. Moreover, social inclusion was hard to come by and upskilling or learning new skills was almost inevitably out of question. Unsettled by the hard hitting research findings, Mr. Nagesh decided it was time for him to give something back to the industry that had given him so much. Thus began the story of TRRAIN - Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India.

ViSiON aNd MiSSiONTRRAIN has one vision - To empower people in the retail industry. By training the next generation of retail employees who will be an asset to any retail organization because of their warmth, humility and enthusiasm for work. And initiating holistic programmes that will impart a sense of pride, reward retail associates and inspire them to put their heart and soul into the work they do.

TRRAIN’s mission is - To be committed for upgrading the lives of people in retail both at work and at home by being a catalyst and creating sustainable platforms through thought leadership, backed by a not-for-profit objective.

TRRAIN as an organization started with a belief that people in retail are assets, they are the lifeline of this diverse industry. Therefore, everything that TRRAIN does is only focussed on measuring IMPACT on the life of retail associates and their families.

in every retail associate so that they truly love and enjoy being part of the retail industry and not just as a short term livelihood opportunity.

Retail Employees’ Day: Through a detailed study on the retail industry, it was understood that pride in the retail associates was almost missing, as they saw retail as just another job. Thus the thought was to have a day dedicated to the hard work, long working hours, missing out on holidays and family time for the millions of Retail Associates across India and the world. It is a small gesture with a much deeper impact which gave form to Retail Employees Day. Thus, 12th December was announced as the day of and for the Retail Associates and Employees, when their efforts are celebrated by retail organizations not only in India, but in Turkey, UAE and other countries across the world, every year. Over the years we saw how this day has impacted the way the employees work and also the overall business. Milestones:- 5 million retail associates celebrate RED across India, UAE and Turkey.

- 700+ brands & 60+ malls celebrate RED in India.- One of the top 3 calendar events in the retail industry. Dream:- To see each and every retailer across the world celebrate

this day for each of their retail associates. ResPect anD Recognition: To have the retail associates recognised for their continuous contributions to the larger industry and their individual brands so that they feel respected and noticed in their profession.tRRain Retail aWaRDs: Very often a retail associate goes out of their way to make sure a customer gets what they want but these stories of exceptional conduct are never recognised and therefore, the associates do not feel like their contributions hold value. Celebrating an associate’s effort to serve the customer the best possible way is imperative but there was no such platform which would be ideal for this. Based on this, we designed TRRAIN Retail Awards where we gather stories of outstanding customer service instances and award the associates for their brilliant effort while showcasing their exceptional retail service to the world. The next awards will be held on the 27th February 2019 at the Renaissance Hotel, Powai. The recognition has over the years increased a brands value and contributing to the same has given brands a platform to showcase how customer centric they are as part of the larger industry.Milestones:- Received more than 10,000 + stories from 120+ cities over 7 years.

TRRaiN TRUSTS aNd iTS UNiqUe feaTUReSAccording to the National Skill Development Corporation, India’s retail sector will need around a workforce of around 56 million. The sector will have one of the highest

incremental human resource requirements - of 17.35 million till the year 2022. (Excerpt from Economic Times)

Knowing this gap, TRRAIN – Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India has taken an initiative to make a difference to the lives of people in the retail industry. TRRAIN works towards achieving immediate and lasting change in the lives of both Retailers and Retail Associates across India.

TRRAIN is solely committed to bringing about a lasting change in the lives of people in retail both at work and at home.

TRRAIN had conducted a very detailed research on retail associates both in organized and unorganized sector with respect to:

- Their lives - Motivators- DesiresIt brings to our notice the perceived imbalance – what we

think they are and what they are. Their starting point is the need to be financially

independent more importantly contributes to household income and family responsibilities. If we move more towards their personal then they believe that they are not equipped with higher education, specialized skills, desired personality. This comes from immense self-doubt and self-reservation.

Therefore, they perceive retail as stop gap arrangement which stems from a feeling that they are not capable of getting a job anywhere else owing to multiple reasons, hence retail is the best option for them to start off with.

The starting point for most is “I am not good enough”. Irrespective of whether they are from unorganized or organized retail most of them see it as a short-term career plan.

Retail is booming, the demand for people is high therefore developing them, grooming them, taking them to the next level is the key.

There are two perspectives to this, one from employer side and other how an employee can contribute to the overall business. As a HR professional or a retailer, what is being done differently to bring the best out of the associate?

Below are some examples of employee practices which affect employee motivation in a positive manner.

Below are 5 indicative ways of creating an aspirational retail workforce:1. security: Today, we all want to be secure along with our families. Understanding this basic need to cater to the bottom of the pyramid will create a positive difference. Retailers have provided educational benefits, marriage loans, umbrella insurance and accidental policies to their employees. Many HR professionals are of a belief that giving partnerships to senior employees will create oneness and synergy at every level.2. addressing physical and mental needs: One of the retailers offers – Foot Massages to associates whose core job is to stand for hours on the shop floor, other have TV in their cafeteria for entertainment, yoga sessions every week, self- defence courses for women, health check-up camps, small area for playing indoor board games.3. learning, Development and Recognition: There are employees who offer one-hour internet surfing time to read

and learn on any topic associate finds interesting, books available to read in all languages, engagement through contests, competitions on a very large scale wherein one of the associates actually took up to professional singing after winning a All India Singing Competition.4. inculcating organizational values: Gone are those days where the organizational values were pasted in one corner of the office, today as entrepreneurs we know how important it is to inculcate these values down the line, retailers have created anthems, culture-based programs, newsletters to bring together the essence of the organization. 5. Work- life Balance: The most important factor is, understanding their personal space and building a work culture which respects this personal space. One of the retailers shut their stores after 7.00 pm on the day of Diwali so that their associates can spend time with their families. This not only creates loyalty to the brand but an associate builds a strong bond with the company.

An industry so challenging yet exciting, everyday is different from another, every day a new customer a new person to interact with, therefore we do have highly motivated associates who go out of their way to serve our customers and make their own success stories.

Some of these stories are very heart-warming which will set an example or answer the question that retail is where I want to be, it will not only give me an enriching experience but also add value to my career growth.

innovation at its best: Nitin and MohdIrfan from Titan Eye Plus specifically designed a pair of spectacles for a customer who was having trouble opening her eyes. They went out of their way and used their creativity to make the glasses with which the customer was able to see things comfortably.

the gift of happiness: Vikas from Manyavar who exclusively reopened the store for a Groom in distress whose wedding attire was stolen. They not only completed their entire shopping but to Vikas’s pleasant surprise the Baraat started right outside of the store!

extraordinary in the ordinary: Bhavya from HyperCity who delivered a special organic multigrain flour to the customer who was at the clinic as she was not medically fit to travel, he borrowed money from his Store administrator to buy the product and travel with it and did not miss his shift while doing so.

Outshining with (this) ability: Dhruv Narayan has exceeded customer service expectations by bringing a lot of uniqueness to what he does. He uses sign language to identify barcodes and product MRPs and help clients enjoy a greatshopping experience.

Retail associates are the all-important last mile in the retail value chain. They need to be empowered through training that goes beyond product knowledge and addresses their personal development, communication and soft skills. Q after a path breaking career in shopper’s stop and building the company from the beginning in 1999 and

leading it to the top, what are the important lessons you learnt, relevant for the growth of Retail industry in india?

A I am a very fortunate professional who got a chance to start a new brand in a new business vertical as the first

employee in the year 1991. I joined the K.Raheja Corp to start a department store business in the vacant property at Andheri. My journey of the last 27 years has been very enriching. Starting the journey as a first employee leading a team of 13 employees to being the Non-Executive Chairman of a publicly listed entity with more than 6000 employees and a market cap of 600 million US$.

During the journey, 15 years back I also started the Retailers Association of India with Late Ved Prakash Arya. RAI is the biggest representative organisation for modern retailers in India.I continue to be the Chairman of RAI.

I had the fortune of starting multiple businesses like Hypercity from scratch to divesting 100% of stake last year to the Future Group.

I was involved in the Acquisition of Crossword, setting up of joint ventures with LAI of Australia for Timezone and Nuance of Switzerland for Duty free retailing at the airports. Last year we have divested our stakes back to our partners.

My journey of the last 36 years including 27 years in Shoppers Stop has been full of learnings, many successes and some not so successful. Like my ex-colleague Ajoy Krishnamurthy used to say “Many good days and many bad days but never a boring day at Shoppers Stop”

I have had much learning during the last 36 years of my career. I would like to out them under various heads so that it is easy for readers to understand and apply in their business.

a) India is a diverse country. Brands and retailers who want to do business have to look at India as a continent like Europe and plan every step in every city and state as if they are launching the business for the first time. It is better for brands and retailers to first become dominant in one state rather than become marginal in many states.

b) Retail is a customer centric business. Every policy, process and decision should revolve around the customer. I would attribute the success of Shoppers Stop to the customer centric approach of the company. To the extent that all of us changed our designation and adopted a common designation “Customer Care Associate”. My recommendation to all

retail companies is that they should have a full size cut out picture of their customer in their board/meeting rooms so that every time they take a decision they are reminded that their business is for the customers benefit. In the early days I would spend the whole evening on the shop floor interacting with the customers. In fact the genesis of our First Citizen Club has its beginning to my meetings with customers and taking their name and numbers on a piece of paper.

c) Retail has a very large workforce and 95% of the people are in the front end of the business at the last mile serving the customers. Successful retail organisations are the ones who take great care of their employees so that the

employees can take care of their customers. d) Leadership in retail have to walk the talk. Unlike many

businesses retail happens on the shop floor. Every action of yours is visible to the customer as well as the retail associate. They emulate your actions and carefully observe and listen to what you say and do. Since the customer facing retail requires entrepreneurship and the back end of the business requires professionalism and processes, all retailers should build competency and capabilities of scaling up at the back end.

e) Since retailers end up doing millions of transactions with millions of customers and thousands of SKU, the business becomes very complicated. Therefore the need to be on the cutting edge of technology is critical. Lot of success of Shoppers Stop is attributed to the early adoption of global technology and bringing in best practises from the global retail industry.

f) Innovation is one of the few differentiators which can make a difference to the business. However it is important that there is organisation buy in to new initiatives. Since retail

is all about execution at the front end, every innovation has to reach the customer when the rubber hits the road.Whenever I was able to get the buyin of the team the project succeeded. Many a times I tried to push my way with my ideas, but the same did not work as nobody believed in my idea.

g) Compliance and Governance. Many start-ups believe that you require good governance only when you become big or go public. In my opinion it is part of the organisational culture and therefore it needs to be imbibed in every individual at the earliest.

h) Retail is also a very tough business. It requires a lot of patience and perseverance apart from huge capital. The capital is required not only for investments and assets but to cover up initial losses which needs to be funded by the equity.

Q What is the relationship between the traditional unrecognised retail industry in india (neighbourhood

shops) and the professionally managed retail companies like shopper’s stop or gucci etc…?

A India is a nation of shopkeepers. Modern retail contributes to around 15% of the overall business.

Traditional retailers are the back bone of the nation. They employ close to 40 million Indians in the retail business. Modern retail has more than 3 million employees and growing at a faster rate than traditional retailers.

Traditional retailers are true entrepreneurs and they are very customer centric and very high on service. Modern retailers have to learn this aspect from them.

Modern retailers are process oriented, tech savvy and know how to scale. Traditional retailers have to align with start-ups and modern brands that can help them scale. India is already seeing a huge number of franchise stores as well as alignment of small and traditional retailers working with technology companies.

Q how do you compare the online retailing and the offline retailing; present status and future trends?

A Online retailing has made a big impact in the shopping behaviour of the youngsters in India.Although their

contribution in the overall business is miniscule, their rate of growth is 5 to 8 times that of offline stores.

We need to understand that Indians of all strata have adapted to the mobile and internet and are using data in a big way. This brings in an opportunity for merchants to create great products and put it on marketplace to reach consumers.

Online retail is also making huge investments to change habits of customers shopping, but eventually the customers are shopping both online and offline, therefore all retailers have to adopt both channels to fully satisfy their customers. Don’t forget when the retail shops are closed in the night our customers are still shopping. We will lose our business if we

B. S. Nagesh (popularly called as BSN) has been with Shoppers Stop Ltd since its inception in 1991 till 2009 as the MD of the company. In 2009 BSN stepped out of his operating roles and is now the Chairman of the board. He was also responsible for the setting up Hypercity and the acquisition of Crossword.

BSN is recognized as the pioneer of the retail boom in India, he was voted by Business India as one of the top 50 managers in India who will influence the Indian business scenario in the 21st century. Ernst & Young nominated him for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2005 as one of the top 30 finalists.

Nagesh is the first Asian to be inducted into the “World Retail Hall of Fame” 2008 at the World Retail Congress 2008 conducted in Barcelona. Retail industry leaders and experts from across the Globe selected him in recognition of his supreme industry achievements.

He has now set up a charitable trust called Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India (TRRAIN). This trusts objective is to empower people in retail so that they can have a better life at work and home.

do not participate in our customers lives.

Q What is your plan of action for coming 10 years?

A My dream is to make Retail an inclusive industry with the help of all fellow retailers. Indians should aspire to

join the retail industry both in modern, traditional as well as omni channel.

TRRAIN wants to build pride through the celebration of Retail Employees Day. Today all modern retailers and malls celebrate the day. We are so pleased that our idea is being recognised and retailers are celebrating the day in India, UAE, and Turkey and hopefully in Philippines this year.

Through our awards for customer service excellence we want to bring in the respect for the foot soldiers of the industry who are serving billions of customers across the globe every day. We are happy that a global department store association has adopted the award globally inspired by our initiative. The award ceremony happened in 2015 in Rome, 2017 in Toronto and will happen in 2019 in Tokyo.

I am so proud of Ameesha our CEO, Nancy our director for livelihood creation and the team as we have been able to bring in inclusion in the retail industry through our “Pankh” initiative. We have in the last 7 years trained 10000+ PWD’s and provided livelihood to more than 70% of the youth. Our dream is to create a platform where every year 10000 PWD youth are skilled and provided with livelihood in the retail industry.

Our new project “TRRAINHer” has received very good response and we would like to scale the same by empowering women from the underprivileged section of our society by skilling them and getting them jobs in the retail industry.

Our latest initiative of creating a job portal for the PWD’s recruitment will be soft launched on the 3rd of December. A unique project which will help match supply and demand in the PWD sector. To begin with the portal will be used for the “Pankh” and “TRRAINHer” project before we scale it up for the benefit of the industry.

We are also piloting a community platform called “TRRAINCircle” which will help retail associates get access to various products and services.

Q how do you assess and compare the skill level of indian retail industry with the global standards?

A Indian retails and retail employees are ahead of the global fraternity in terms of empathy and service.

However we have a long way to go in terms of skills, efficiency and productivity.

As an industry we still do not value the skilled employee compared to the unskilled. Even after training the candidates do not get a differential compensation or roles, thus not getting encouraged to apply for skilling development

programs.

Q What are the various options available for training and skill building for retail industry?

A GOI skill missions have created a great platform for developing various programs for skilling of the youth.

Many training organisations have come up in the last few years. However the big gap is the linkage between the training institutions and the industry and therefore youth are getting trained and assessed however a majority of them are not getting placed.

Q What is your comment on the employment potential of retail industry in india?

A As of today retail employs 43 million people with modern retail taking up 3 million. I believe this

employment potential can go to 60 million plus with the growth of online and omnichannel business, expansion of modern retail and the transformation of traditional retail. However this requires large vision from the GOI and the participation of all constituents of the retail industry.

Q how do you plan to connect the welfare of the retail industry workers with csR activities of csR eligible

companies?

A Since retail is still in its infancy and not many retailers are large and profitable, therefore the pool of CSR fund

is very small. Even within the pool retailers have their own CSR agenda.

I believe retail will create a large livelihood creation opportunity and the CSR funds of many private and public sector can be mobilised towards providing benefits for the Indian youth to get into this sector.

Q anything you would like to share with the readers of csR vision?

A A few of my personal learnings during my 27 years of Shoppers Stop journey and 7 years of setting up of

TRRAIN.a) We have to be driven by purpose which is larger than chasing revenues and profits.b) The purpose has to be inclusive and we should be able to impact the lives of many fellow human beings.c) We cannot do everything on our own. We need to ensure that as leaders we carry our team with us in our journey.d) We should have the ability to “let Go’ at every stage of our career and see our colleagues and juniors grow ahead. Only when people and organisation below you grow you can think of your personal growth.e) If you chase your purpose Fame and Financial gains come, however if you chase Fame and money you never get functional satisfaction and happiness.u

air POllutiOn: brEath tO DiEStand up for clean air

Dr. Srikant Sharma, MBBS, MD

GueSt CoLuMN

Air pollution in India is estimated to kill 1.5 million people every year, being the fifth largest killer in India. Causes of deaths due to pollution include strokes, heart disease, COPD, lung cancer, and lung

infections. India has the world’s highest death rate from chronic

respiratory diseases and asthma. In Delhi, due to air pollution: increase in premature deaths (nearly 6000 per day), asthma attacks, excess deaths (50% of which due to respiratory disease causes) and increase Hospital admission due to chronic obstructive airway disease.

Air pollution occurs when harmful quantities of substances including gases, particulates, and biological molecules are introduced into Earth’s atmosphere.

EPA(Environment protection agency) calculates the AQI(air quality index) for eight major pollutants regulated by clean air act. Eight category pollutants (and health breakpoints) measured are PM10, PM 2.5, Nitrogen dioxide, basal level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, ammonia and lead.

Air quality( air pollution)is represented by the annual mean concentration of particulate matter PM10 (particles smaller than 10 microns) and PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 microns, ie., about 40 times thinner than a human hair). Safe levels for PM according to the WHO’s air quality guidelines are 20 μg/m3 (annual mean) for PM10 and 10 μg/m3 (annual mean) for PM2.5. For India PM10 and PM2.5 levels (at any time) of <100 and <60 are satisfactory, respectively. More than this is implied to get bad effects of pollution.

Carbon dioxide has been described as “the leading pollutant” and “the worst climate pollution”. Carbon dioxide is a natural component of the atmosphere, essential for plant life and given off by the human respiratory system.

Sulfur oxides – particularly sulphur dioxide is produced by various industrial processes, volcano and Coal / petroleum combustion. In Delhi, only about 20% of the industrial units are set up in the approved industrial areas whereas the rest of them are in residential and commercial areas. There has also been reported that the number of vehicles plying on the roads of Delhi is more than that of the three metropolitan cities of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai taken together. Sulfur dioxide decreases lung function. Cardiovascular mortality has the

strongest association with elevation of sulphates and PM2.5.Diesel exhaust (DE) is a major contributor to combustion-

derived particulate matter in air pollution. DE has been linked to acute vascular dysfunction and increased thrombus formation.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, toxic yet non-irritating gas. It is a product of combustion of fuel such as natural gas, coal or wood. Vehicular exhaust contributes to the majority of carbon monoxide into our atmosphere, creating a smog formation. Modern smog acted on by ultraviolet light from the sun to form photochemical smog (dangerous pollutant).

Chlorofluorocarbons are released from air conditioners, refrigerators, aerosol sprays, and then rise to the stratosphere, where they damage the ozone layer. This allows harmful ultraviolet rays to reach the earth’s surface. This can lead to skin cancer, eye disease and can even cause damage to plants. In India in 2014, it was reported that air pollution had reduced crop yields in the most affected areas by almost half.inDooR PollutionBuilding materials including carpeting and plywood emit

formaldehyde gas. Fumes from paint, hair spray, varnish, aerosol sprays and other solvents, are indoor pollution from volatile organic compounds.

Lead paint can degenerate into dust and may be inhaled. Intentional indoor air pollution act with the use of air fresheners, incense, and scented items. Indoor pollution fatalities may be caused by pesticides sprays used without proper ventilation. Clothing emits tetrachloroethylene, for days after dry cleaning. Pets produce dander, mites in bedding, carpeting. Mold forms on walls may generate mycotoxins. Indoors, if lack of air circulation, allows these airborne pollutants to accumulate more.

Cigarette smoke contains up to 70 carcinogenic substances that remain in the indoor air for a long time.

Pollution is a significant risk factor for a number of diseases, including respiratory infections, heart disease, COPD, stroke and lung cancer. An association between air pollution, cervical cancer and brain cancer has been observed.

The health effects may include difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing, asthma and worsening of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions. Pollution can lower children’s’ immune system and also increase the risks of cancer, epilepsy, diabetes.

Early exposure to air pollution causes damaging changes in the brain as autism and schizophrenia. Also affects short-term memory, learning ability, and impulsivity (irritable, aggressive) of children. Air pollution increases the risk of dementia in people over 50 years old. More and more people should use bus and metro instead of private cars. Electric vehicles, electric trains can also help as transport mode. Electric power generation may be produced from nuclear power generation. Switch to clean power sources such as wind power, solar power, and hydro power.

Every individual should keep a proper check on the pollution level of their vehicles. Keep car, boat, and other engines properly tuned. Follow gasoline refueling instructions for efficient vapor recovery, being careful not to spill fuel. Vehicle tires should be properly inflated. Do not drive aggressively (speed up) because that only produces more

emissions. Replace car air filters in stipulated time. Making more use of CNG.

Compost leaves and yard waste. Bio digesters can be utilized where slash and burn is prevalent. The plants can be gathered and sold to a central authority that will break it down in a large modern bio digester, producing much needed energy to use. Consider using gas logs instead of wood.

Poster coated with microscopic, pollution-eating nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, placed on a building, can absorb the toxic emission from around.ReDuce Pollution inDooRConserve energy, Look for the ENERGY STAR label when buying home or office equipment.

Opt for no-VOC polo paints, stains, paint strippers, and glues. Paint with a brush rather than spray.

Use green cleaning products instead of conventional chemical-filled products. Use natural cleaning methods

such as baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice.

Perfumes consist of a number of synthetic chemicals that when being sprayed in the air break down into harmful compounds. Instead of using chemical-filled air fresheners, use essential oils, herbs and flowers to make your home smell nice.

Keep Air-conditioning, not be lesser than 25degrees.

Consider using air filters and getting your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems) checked regularly. Also, aromatherapy can often make air quality worse unless they need to be HEPA (high-efficiency particulate arresting) air filters.

Trees around your house have the unique ability to clean the air of gaseous pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone, as well as particulate pollutants.

Keep air-cleaning houseplants: Some plants have the ability to remove pollutants from the indoor air. Such plants are: Peace Lily, Areca Palm, Chinese evergreen, English Ivy, Golden Pothos, and Bamboo Palm.

House air purifiers are with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air), ESP (electrostatic precipitators), ion generators, and composite filters (activated carbon and HEPA filters).

Let each one of us take a pledge today to do our bit for our environment, if so then surely Delhi will be a better place to live in. u

2.0 : A World Class Indian Sci-fi Movie

This year’s most awaited movie 2.0 has hit the screens with Rajnikant, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson in lead roles. A sequel to the 2010 movie, “ROBOT”, this is also a science fiction movie directed by Shankar.

Movie starts with a man attempting suicide from a mobile tower and at the following day, Chennai’s every mobile phone is snatched away by a mysterious force and everybody is shocked. Soon, mobile phone company’s owners are found dead and then Dr. Vasigaran is called by the government to look into the matter. Realizing the graveness of the situation, Dr.Vasigaran along with his assistant NILA, suggests of bringing Chitti back.

The trio catches the man behind the madness that is Pakshirajan but a mole allows him to run from prison, he comes back stronger and Chitti is rendered powerless in front of him.

Rajnikant in both of his roles has struck a chord and Akshay has beautifully portrayed a man who becomes villain for his love of birds. Amy has been outstanding as her role as the Nice Intelligent Lovely Assistant (NILA). The Direction by Shankar is mind blowing and gripping.

The film has world class VFX and 3D effects and every now and then there is something that is thrown at the audience. The best thing about the film, there are no unnecessary songs or romantic scenes in the movie which makes the storyline smooth.

We deducted 1 star because of some loopholes in the story but awesome effects and Rajnikant’s charm overshadows all these little things. A must watch movie to enjoy with your friends and family.

delegation improves productivityGrowth requires young leaders to delegate tasks, figure out how to hire people they can trust and do so without alienating customers or vendors. If you don’t organize your task list and figure out what takes priority -- and what actually needs to be done by you specifically -- you’ll lose focus on what’s important which can be very harmful in the long run.

3 traits of leadership longevityIf you wish to be great leader someday, don’t just be good at what you do but display a character that shows that tends to show, you do everything that you say you can do, every day. Consistencies, Character & Competence are the 3Cs required for prolonging your leadership.

even the best product is never fully ready The design process of a product should not stop even after the product’s initial release, designing is a creative and evolving process which has to be done consistently. Customer’s demands are never-ending and you have to constantly make improvements to cater to the never ending updates in the technology. This thought process is necessary for the product’s survival in the market, if not

satisfied, you should start over.

listen more, speak lessYou can leave a deeper impact on a person when you not just hear him but listen to him and be more concerned about him. Listening attentively before speaking helps the listener in knowing the speaker better and builds a much deeper connection with him. And when you think now you have developed a relationship and know the thought process of the speaker, then add your remark in the conversation.

Value your employeesLeadership is about listening, having the right people around you and knowing when to make changes. A great leader appreciates everybody that gets them to where they’re going and inspires others to do the same. This attitude helps in a better team spirit and ensures the loyalty of employees towards the organization.

“ninety percent of leadership is the ability

to communicate something people want.”
