    y Acapacitor is a active electronic components consistingof a pair of conductors separated bya dielectric(insulator). When there is a potential difference (voltage)across the conductors, a static electric field develops in thedielectric that stores energyand produces a mechanicalforce between the conductors. An ideal capacitoris

    characterized bya single constant value, capacitance,measured in farads. This is the ratio of the electriccharge on each conductor to the potential differencebetween them. In our circuit, we are using polar and non-polar capacitors both.

    y The LM117 series of adjustable 3-terminalpositivevoltage regulators is capable of supplying in excess of1.5A over a 1.2V to 37V output range.

    y The 78XXseries of three terminalregulators isavailable with several fixed output voltages makingthem usefulin a wide range of applications. 7805gives 5V and 7812 gives 12V.

    y The 7912 & 7905 series is 3-pin fixed negative outputtype voltage regulators. A stabilized fixed negativeoutput voltage is obtained from an unstable DC inputvoltage without using anyexternalparts. Eleven types

    of fixed output voltage are available from 5V through10V, 12V, 15V, 18V, 20V, and 24V.

    Process :y Transformer X1 steps down the mains power to deliver thesecondaryoutput of 18V-0-18V. The transformer output isrectified byfull-wave bridge rectifier BR1, filtered bycapacitorsC1, C2, C3, C7 and C8, and regulated byIC1 through IC5.

    y Regulator IC1 (LM317) provides variable voltages (1.25 to 20V),

    while IC2 and IC4 provide regulated +12V and 12V,respectively. The output of IC2 is fed to regulator IC3 (7805),

    which provides fixed +5V. Similarly, the output of IC4 is fed toregulator IC5 (7905), which provides fixed 5V.

    y Capacitors C4 through C6, and C9 through C11, are used forfurther filtering ofripples in positive and negative regulatedpower supplies. LED1 glows to indicate that +5Vis available,

    while LED2 indicates that 5Vis available.

    Switch S1 is used for mains on/ off. Using switches S2 throughS4, anyof the three supplies can be independentlyturned offwhen not required in a particular experiment. This reducesunnecessarypower dissipation and increases the life andreliabilityof the power supply.

    y Since the circuit uses three terminalregulators, onlycapacitorsare required at the input and output. The use of fewcomponents makes the circuit verysimple. The three terminalregulators have heat-sink provision to directlydeliver 1A outputcurrent.

    y To ensure the maximum output, do not forget to use heat-sinksfor the regulators.
