CHAIR’S MESSAGE
It’s been another good year for Trinity’s program in Health Care Administration!
All of our 2011-12 graduates were employed within weeks of graduation. Many of theon-campus students accepted full-time positions in their residency organizations. All ofour on-campus students procured residency placements in organizations that will provide rich educational experiences and successfully launch their careers. We admittednew groups of students who are energetic and excited about a career in this dynamicfield. Our faculty continue to be excellent classroom instructors, attentive advisers, productive scholars, and valuable contributors to the local and professional community.
Our fall Leadership Symposium featured Quint Studer, founder and CEO of the StuderGroup. Those of you who have heard Studer speak know that he can captivate an audience! We had a capacity crowd for his public address, “Straight A Leadership: Alignment, Action,Accountability.” Afterwards, he spent several hours over a pizza lunch with our students, providing a wealth of advice for young careerists about the challenges and opportunitiesahead. We are very grateful that he devoted so much time to the Trinity program.
Other good news stems from a major gift from Trinity trustee Michael Neidorff ’65, hiswife Noémi, and the Centene Corporation to support the development of Trinity’s newCenter for the Sciences and Innovation, now under construction on campus. In recognitionof that gift, the Innovation Center within the new complex will be named the CenteneCorporation-Michael F. and Noémi Neidorff Center for Innovation in the Sciences, HealthCare Management, and Liberal Arts. This is a wonderful recognition of our program’svalue to the University and should create additional opportunities for collaborationwith other programs and faculty within the Trinity community.
And, last month, we received official notification that our program was reaccredited bythe Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) forseven years, the maximum time allowable. We’ve been continuously accredited since1968, the year we were first eligible. Accreditation represents an external judgment ofthe program’s high quality and commitment to continuous improvement.
As always, I am privileged to be a part of Trinity’s Health Care Administration program. My appreciation extends to our faculty and staff, the University administration, ourstudents, the health care alumni, and the many friends in the professional communitywho have contributed to our success.
Sincerely,
Mary E. Stefl, Ph.D.Chair, Health Care Administration

We launched Trinity University’s Campaign for Health Care Administration in 2007 as a way to ensure the long-term viability of our program. It was an outgrowth of a thorough strategic planning process, and we viewed it as the road to achieving our vision: becoming the premier health care administration program for integrating on-campus study with applied and experiential learning.
With the encouragement of Trinity’s administration and the guidance, assistance, and personal help of our capable campaign Steering Committee, we have made significantprogress toward the campaign goals of $3 million for current operations and $13 million for endowment and future sustainability. To date, we have received a total of$7,513,515 in gifts and pledge commitments. More than $1.9 million of those gifts and pledges are for current student financial support and current use for the generalprogram. More than $1.1 million was received for endowment for student financial aid. Another $4 million in pledge commitments made as bequest intentions will createfuture endowments for student financial aid and support of the program’s Centerfor Leadership Development. We owe a special thanks to alumnus Bob Shaw ’69, ’72,who has provided extraordinary leadership as chair of the Steering Committee.
Two of the most visible gifts to date come from Cheryl and Wayne Smith ’72 andMethodist Healthcare Ministries. The Smiths most generous $1M unrestricted gift hasbeen placed in a quasi-endowment that will generate funds to be used annually for pro-gram enhancements. The Methodist Healthcare Ministries provided a gift in honor oftheir long-time hospital system president John E. Hornbeak, LFACHE, who now serves as the Executive-in-Residence for the department. The Ministries gift established an endowment for the Hornbeak Scholar, the recipient of a full-tuition graduate fellowship. A gift from Douglas D. Hawthorne ’69, ‘72 and the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital,Dallas creates an enduring common space for students within our office suite, a projectthat will be completed during a future renovation of Chapman Graduate Center. Othercampaign gifts provide student scholarships and fellowships, symposium speakers, and aninnovative faculty fellowship program (initially funded by St. David’s HealthCare) thathas allowed our faculty to spend time in a hospital setting during the summer months.
We are most grateful to our 84 Campaign donors made up of alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff, corporate, and foundation donors. Every gift, no matter the size, makes an impact on the department. The confidence in our future, as expressed throughthese gifts and pledges, is deeply appreciated.
Right now, we are very close to our $3 million goal for current operations, and we hope to close the formal Campaign for Health Care Administration at the end of this calendar year. At the same time, we will be working with the HCAD Alumni Association to promote annual giving. In many ways, the strength of this program rests on the shoulders of its alumni, and we will be asking you to continue to invest in the programand your degree.
This campaign has made a real difference, but the financial support is only part of it.Through the process we have reconnected with so many of our alumni who have somuch wisdom to share with us. On behalf of all of our faculty and staff, I heartily thank each and every one of you who has supported this effort.
