A SEASONAL MESSAGE FROM OUR MINISTERS:

As we wander through the Advent season and make our way through our preparations for Christmas, we invite you to

remember how God is born in our lives today. It's easy to get caught up in the need to be everywhere and do

everything and end up feeling exhausted by the time Christmas morning arrives! And yet the Christmas story reminds

us of how a young couple decided to say yes to a message from God and found their lives were changed forever. As

we wander and wonder this Advent, may we listen for a message of hope, peace, joy and love from God as we make

our way to the celebration of Christmas in the birth of a baby. In our gatherings of family and friends, in quiet

moments of winter white and sparkling lights, in laughter and thoughtful tears, in our memories and traditions, in

new ways and familiar routines, we hope you find a holy moment that touches your heart, makes your spirit smile,

and reminds you of the importance of this time of year.

Blessings, Milly and Elizabeth

COMMITTEES AND SUCH...

THE VISIONING COMMITTEE

In the fall of 2017 a Visioning committee was appointed to look at the ministerial needs of Trinity United Church. The committee members are Paul Campbell, Susan Delaney, Carolyn Pierson, Charles Powell and Debbie Spindler.

To begin the process, the committee conducted two workshops with the congregation wherein three major questions were asked. First, the congregation members were asked to review a document summarizing ideas gathered by the Board and Committees addressing membership at Trinity. The congregation was asked to add to the list. Second, the congregation was asked to comment on the ever changing neighbourhood that surrounds the church and to state if they saw any additional needs pertaining to our surroundings. Last, the congregation was asked to express what they felt TUC’s leadership needs were.

In terms of next steps, the committee will be following the handbook published by the Settlement Commission of the Conference of Manitoba and North-western Ontario. The handbook was presented to us by Diane Gillis, our Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Conference Settlement Committee representative. Diane is available to guide and assist the committee, should the need arise. We will be meeting with Elizabeth and Milly as well as the Ministry and Personnel and Stewardship Committees in order to complete a ministry profile. This profile will review our demographic, financial, and community profiles as well as a ministry and mission profile.

Our goal is to present the completed forms and recommendations to the Congregation at our Annual Meeting on March 11, 2018.

Your views on the future of our ministry here at Trinity are important. The committee would welcome your input.

Respectfully submitted, Susan Delaney

THE YOUTH ADVISORY GROUP

You may be wondering where and what the youth of Trinity are up to these days! After our Youth Worker resigned in the spring, the Youth Advisory Group was tasked by the board to explore options for the future of youth ministry in our community.

We met with 7 different churches over the summer and have determined that 5 churches are interested and have resources to hire a youth worker for January-June 2018. After bringing recommendations to the board, Trinity along with Good Shepherd Anglican, Epiphany Lutheran, Fort Garry United and United Church in Meadowood are now working together to search for a youth worker!

Our youth will continue to have a weekly program along with Good Shepherd Anglican while the other 3 churches will have a once a month youth program - all delivered by one youth worker. We hope to bring you news of the search in the new year!

Respectfully submitted, The Youth Advisory Group

Do you love the creativity and thoughtful ideas of young people as they live out their faith? Are you looking for work that will change the lives of youth along with your own?

This is the opportunity for you!

THE FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

BOMBER PARKING FINAL REPORT

Elizabeth ensures that you park where you are supposed to! A Christmas Star to honour our Bomber Volunteers

What a great season we had with the Bombers this year! So many people volunteered to spend time directing cars into lots and then back out to the streets AND directing people across the street to the stadium and back out to their homes with enthusiasm, friendliness and respect. We also came to know some folks better, connected with some we know well and met a great group from other churches, schools and staff along the way. We were well fed by a dedicated team of "food people" who braved the traffic to pick up and deliver sandwiches to some of us each game.

Here is a summary of what we did since June.

June: 15 people worked 93 hours for one event - $1021 July: 33 people worked 280 hours for three events - $3080 Aug: 21 people worked 234 hours for two events - $2593 Sept: 32 people worked 212 hours for two events - $2334 Oct: 30 people worked 329 hours for three events - $3616 Nov: 16 people worked 89 hours for one event (the playoff game!) - $979

IN TOTAL:

147 people worked 1237 hours at 12 events realizing $13,623 for Trinity!

Our food costs were approximately $100 per event; just over 50 people were trained and many folks worked more than one event; for the first few events, we needed 15 workers; for the remainder, we needed 17 workers at every event; food people were extras!

We hope this great fundraiser continues next year and more folks come out!

THE COMMUNITY BBQ AND FUN EVENT PLANNING COMMITTEE

COMMUNITY BBQ AND FUN EVENT SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8, 2018 12-4 PM

In the beginning, just like all of you, we were moved by the weekly messages to be the Salt and Light in the

community. This resulted in several discussions about the possibility of something like a community BBQ to get

to know our community and neighbours. This is not a repeat of last year's outdoor worship service. A few

people explored the concept of a community BBQ and fun event and subsequently received Board approval to

plan a Community Welcome BBQ and Fun Event.

EVENT: Community Welcome BBQ and Fun Event DATE: Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 12-4 pm PLACE: Trinity United Church

Everyone is invited to attend the event on September 8, 2018 to share in the celebration of our relationships

with our neighbours and community.

Members of the planning team and our two churches (Trinity United and Good Shepherd Anglican) are busy

forming community connections with our neighbours in the following ways:

We have attended the Trinity Community Garden windup to share fellowship with our wonderful gardening community

We have joined the Fort Garry Community Network (a network of ~20 South Winnipeg agencies, organizations, services and schools)who are working collaboratively to promote the healthy development of children, youth, seniors and families

We have initiated planning for a Community Round Table with Trinity community partners in March, 2018

Trinity will host the Fort Garry Community Network meeting in January 2018

Through these activities we are continuing to work on building relationships and nourishing outreach

opportunities with our community members.

... So, mark Saturday, September 8, 2018 on your calendars. The committee will be sharing more Community

BBQ and fun event details in 2018... stay tuned.

OUTREACH COMMITTEE - CIRCLES FOR RECONCILIATION

Logo from: Belle Arnold, Wakka Wakka of Bundjalung Country, Australia

In March of 2017, Trinity’s Outreach Committee offered a workshop where many of us participated in a

Blanket Exercise. The Blanket Exercise was developed by KAIROS and the goal is to build understanding

about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-

contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. At this workshop everyone was actively involved as

they stepped onto blankets that represented the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later

Métis peoples. This activity sparked an interest in many of us to learn more and we were introduced to

another activity called Circles for Reconciliation.

There are presently many Circles for Reconciliation taking place throughout the province. The aim of

Circles for Reconciliation is to establish trusting, meaningful relationships between Indigenous and

Non-Indigenous peoples as part of the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation

Commission. In order to do this a group of 5 Indigenous and 5 non-Indigenous people are invited to

meet for 10 sessions to discuss a variety of themes led by two facilitators.

After following the registration format, we patiently waited to be matched up with five Indigenous

people. In September 2018, our group which consists of: Doug Hutchings and daughter Leslie Kirby,

Gerta de Jong, Margaret Ambrose, Carly Steen and Carolyn Pierson met for the first time, excited,

apprehensive and curious as to how this would proceed.

The discussions at each session are grounded in the Seven Sacred Teachings of the Anishinaabe.

Respect, patience and courtesy are the hallmarks of the groups as in Truth and Reconciliation

Commission Report. The four guiding principles each of us are asked to follow for the new relationship

are “mutual recognition, mutual respect, sharing, and mutual responsibility.”

Here we are now; near the end of our time together and feel we have only just begun this journey.

How fast the 10 weeks have gone by and we all feel that we have learned much and have much more

to learn. The question each of us has asked – is what now and how can we share this experience with

others? We hope to have an opportunity in the near future to share further with you, our Trinity

family.

Respectfully submitted, Carolyn Pierson

OTHER GOINGS ON...

GOOD SHEPHERD AND TRINITY TALENT NIGHT

On Saturday, November 18 several Trinity and Good Shepherd members and friends were treated to a fun-filled and

musical interlude displaying the talents of several members of both congregations. Hosts Richard Castro and Terry De

Long kept the event well-organized and timely... and had many humorous anecdotes to share as they worked their

way through introducing the many acts. Guests were treated to cookies and punch before and after the event. The

presentations were varied and delightful.

Nancy De Long showcased her piano talents by playing: In the Sweet By & By and the Piano March

Mary Pelton kept everyone on the edge of their seats as she read an eerie story from Australia called: A Good Tip for

a Ghost

Ann Timonin shared her love of poetry by reciting two thought-provoking poems

Peter Timonin and Richard Castro sang a fine duet of Gordon Lightfoot’s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Milt Muldrew sang a haunting rendition of Danny Boy and also made the audience chuckle with some commercial

jingles and an animated version of Do Your Ears Hang Low

Richard Castro dressed as Bob Dylan sang a song entitled Talking the World War III blues and read a very moving story

entitled A Soldier Died Today

Willa Semotok, Gerta de Jong, Barb Tallman, Elaine Adam, Alice Allen and Marguerite Zaworonok left the audience

laughing out loud with their song Church Work sung to the tune of Petula Clark’s Downtown. While Church Work was

entertaining, nothing could have prepared the audience for the ladies fashion show event. Such couture outfits as:

A plunging neckline: A Pencil skirt: A 10 carat necklace: Bellbottom trousers: Cap sleeves:

... were modeled with style and grace!

Second Chance played a medley of 60’s and 70’s tunes and the audience enthusiastically joined them by singing along

Laurence Broadhurst on the organ, accompanied by GSA’s David Tafelmeyer on the piano, played several

compositions that brought a stirring end to a delightful evening.

Second Chance plays some 60’s and 70’s tunes

“ON THE ROAD TO BETHLEHEM” OPENS THE SEASON OF ADVENT

Our celebration of the first Sunday in Advent, Dec 3, began with our annual time of fellowship and

breakfast!

As this is the ninth breakfast we can take this opportunity to reflect on the very first “Breakfast in

Bethlehem” nine years ago. It was Milly Malavsky’s inspiration that sparked the idea for Trinity to

have a spiritually based breakfast to celebrate Advent, a deviation from the commonly experienced

seasonal “Breakfast with Santa” activity. Without Milly’s vision we might not be writing about this

annual event and reminiscing on how much it is appreciated each year. We can thank Milly for

sharing the Advent Breakfast idea with us… one of her legacies with Trinity!

This year we hosted just over 120 guests to a full breakfast complete with the much loved egg

soufflé, toast, oatmeal porridge, muffins, scones, homemade jams and more! Once again, by

popular request, we are including the recipe of the egg soufflé with this article.

A special tribute goes to all the folks who joined the choral group “Trinity Tones”, under the

leadership of Connie Fillion, that morning. It was so welcoming to hear the festive music as

everyone arrived for breakfast!

The planning committee of Carolyn Pierson, Marilyn Strukoff, Dawn White and Phyllis Marsch, as

well as key helpers Bill Pelton, Milly Malavsky, Vicky and Will Glowa, Al and Evelyn Hardy, and Jim

Marsch, would all like to offer a warm thanks to everyone who helped in so many ways… from

sharing with the baking, providing jams and jellies, setting up, taking down and cleaning up. Above

all, a big thank you to everyone who came! Breakfast was once again a HUGE success!

Egg Soufflé

Ingredients

2 cups grated cheese 1 cup half and half cream 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp dry mustard 1/2 tsp dill weed (if fresh, use 1 tsp dill) 1 dozen eggs (beaten) Sprinkle of white pepper (if you don't have white pepper, black pepper is also totally fine) 2 tbsp butter (melted)

Directions

For ease in clean up, first spray the 9 x 13 inch pan with a vegetable oil (e.g. Pam), then cover the

bottom of the pan with the cheese. Pour the beaten eggs over cheese. Combine the half and half

and seasonings, and then pour over the eggs. Pour the melted butter over all and refrigerate

overnight.

Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 - 45 minutes.

Bon appetite!

EGGNOG RECIPES FOR ALL TASTES

Eddie Willie’s Eggnog This is an “adults only” eggnog, as you can see by the ingredients, and a designated driver or taxi is recommended for the trip home! Ingredients:

15 – 18 eggs 1 and ½ cups of sugar (white or brown) ¾ of a teaspoon of salt 1 and ½ cups brandy 1 and ½ cups of dark rum (or rye whiskey if you prefer) 1 – 2 litre jug of whole milk 1 – 2 litre container of French Vanilla ice cream Nutmeg (fresh to grind or pre-ground)

The day before serving...

1. Beat the eggs in a large bowl until thick 2. Gradually beat the sugar and salt into the egg mixture 3. Slowly add the brandy and rum beating continuously 4. Chill this mixture overnight

When serving the next day...

1. Pour the 2 litres of milk into the egg/sugar/brandy/rum mixture and blend well with a beater 2. Fill a medium-sized, chilled punch bowl with the above milk/egg mixture leaving enough room for about 1/3 of the ice cream 3. Scoop 1/3 of the ice cream into the mixture in the punch bowl and mix gently. 4. Serve in small punch glasses and grate or sprinkle nutmeg on top

Repeat servings are permitted but recipients should be warned that the eggnog will sneak up on them!

Enjoy this eggnog and the festive season... Eddie Willie

Non-Alcoholic Eggnog The eggs are gently cooked to kill any potential bacteria in this non-alcoholic eggnog. Since it contains no alcohol, the kids will enjoy it as much as the adults. You will want to keep this rich and creamy eggnog on hand all through the holidays.

Ingredients: 8 large eggs 2 egg yolks 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 cups milk (whole) 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 cup heavy cream (whipped to soft peaks) Additional nutmeg for garnish

Directions: 1. Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar, and salt in a heavy four-quart pan, whisking until well-combined. 2. Continue whisking while pouring milk in a slow, steady stream until completely incorporated. 3. Turn burner onto lowest possible heat setting. 4. Place pan on burner and stir mixture continuously until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Be patient. This should take about 45 to 60 minutes. 5. Strain mixture through a fine sieve into a large bowl to remove any accidental small cooked bits of egg. 6. Add vanilla extract and nutmeg, stirring to combine. 7. Pour into a glass pitcher, decanter, or container and cover with a lid or plastic wrap. 8. Refrigerate this egg custard mixture to chill at least 4 hours or up to 3 days before finishing. 9. When ready to serve, pour heavy cream into a bowl and whip until it forms soft peaks. 10. Fold whipped cream into cold custard mixture until combined. 11. Serve eggnog in chilled cups or glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
