A Pastor ‘s Prescription for What Ails You

Items for

July: Peanut

Butter and Jelly

“O beautiful for patriot dreams that sees beyond the years. Thine

alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee. And crown thy good

with brotherhood. From sea to shining sea.”

July was always a really festive month when I was a child. Not

just because it is the heart of the summer and school break

but also because of the 4th of July. We would quite often go to

Coney Island during the day and cook out in the late afternoon. But

of all of the great memories that I have of that time, what I remem-

ber most is that God was always a part of our celebration. The songs

we sang talked of God and country. And was normally in that order

placing God first.

“America! America! God shed His grace on thee.”

And what about “God Bless America. Land that I love. Stand beside

her and guide her. Through the night with the light from above.”

Or “My eyes have seen the coming of the glory of the Lord.”

Or the more contemporary “God Bless the USA.”

If we call ourselves Christians or Christ followers, then we should

know that nothing, nothing works at its best without God. Yet we

have allowed Him and His son Jesus to be removed from so much of

our everyday life.

How can we expect God to bless us if we put up barriers to keep

Him out? “We need thee every hour. The world needs God every

hour. So as we celebrate this Independence Day, let us do it knowing

that if we are to truly succeed we must do it with full dependence on

God to lead the way. Remember no matter what the situation may be

God is the solution or the prescription for what ails you. Happy 4th

of July and many blessings.

TREASURER’S REPORT (MAY 2016)

Music Ministry News

Summer has just started, and it has been too hot already. The heat seems to sometimes bring out the

negative side of people. Or maybe it is just the crazy happenings in the world. It just seems that everyone

gets upset and offended so easily. You see one person make a statement or express their opinion, and

immediately there are nasty comments. We should be able to express ourselves and even disagree without

the hate. I don't always succeed, but wish that we all could really think before we speak (or type). If we

could consider how our words might affect others, there might be less hate and more love. I saw a post

today that simply said- " I choose Joy." It reminded me of a song- "I choose Jesus." I think the three words

say the same thing. This is my daily goal. I wonder how things would change if we all strive to be happy, choose joy,

and share love. Maybe we should ask ourselves again, "What would Jesus do?'

July is when we celebrate and show our patriotism. The choir is singing “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” so I decided

to use this song to give a little history about how it came to be written. This song was written by Julia Ward Howe.

She came from a wealthy New York family and was married to a prominent Boston philanthropist and humanitarian.

She was a leader of women's rights, an ardent foe of slavery and with her husband, a crusader for progressive political

and moral issues. During the darkest days of the Civil War, the Howe's visited Washington, and Julia toured a Union

Army Camp on the Potomac. Some of the soldiers were singing a tribute to John Brown called "John Brown's body

lies a-mold'ing in the Grave.” The music was great, but the words needed improvement. Julia's pastor, who was with

her, asked her to consider writing new and better verses. That night, the words came to her and she rose early and

wrote them down. She gave them to a friend who published the words in The Atlantic Monthly in February of

1862. The magazine sent her a check for five dollars. This history came from a book called Then Sings My Soul.

Do you know anyone who cannot come to church for health or other reasons, but really misses the worship experience? Trinity is now offering "Church at Home,” a full worship service on a small scale. We can make accommodations as needed for any challenge.

Please call Gerry Ferguson, 843-360-5584, or Carolyn Marker, 843-361-1942, to refer someone or request this for your-self.

Trinity on the move

After years of prayer and consideration, we are

finally ready to move forward with our Sunday

evening praise and worship service. The start-

up date and time will be announced soon. It is

going to take the efforts of a number of people to

make this happen. Right now we are seeking

people to do the audio and video prep work to

prepare the background scenes for the words to

each song, to learn to adjust the audio and video

on the fly, and to coordinate with the Praise

Team. This is a challenging area to cover, but it

is also very rewarding. There will be training

sessions so even the technologically challenged

will be able to handle the job.

If you are interested or would like more

information, please contact Rev. Ed or Charles.

Mission Ministry News July 2016

NEWS: FOOD RELIEF IN JORDAN

According to U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an estimated nine million Syrians have fled their

homes since the outbreak of civil war in March 2011. Jordan is among the countries most affected by the Syrian

refugee crisis. Nearly 10 percent of the country’s population are refugees from Syria.

Nearly 81 percent of Syrian refugees in Jordan are living outside of camps, in local communities, and 86 percent

of the refugees are living below the Jordanian poverty line, according to UNHCR. The number of food-insecure Syr-

ian refugee families has also increased from six percent in 2014 to 22 percent in early 2015. As a result, refugee and

host communities resort to negative coping strategies such as early marriage, child labor, and survival sex.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) recently approved a grant to support partner International

Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) to provide food aid for Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian host commu-

nity families in Jordan.

IOCC will bring much needed relief through the distribution of 1,570 food parcels that will benefit 7,850 indi-

viduals, including Syrian refugees and Jordanian families, to help meet their most basic day-to-day needs.

You can support this work with your gifts to Global Refugee/Migration Advance #3022144.

We are going to dig several wells! – God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!!! What an awe-

some congregation (including some regular visitors). I said we needed $1800.00 to dig a well so that a village

would have clean water. As of June 21st, you have donated enough money to dig 5 wells, buy 16 backpacks to carry

water and donate $235.00 to Imagine No Malaria. Janet Baker of Widow’s Mite will be at our Missions’ meeting on

July 18th at which time we will present her with checks for each well and the water backpacks.

Christmas Stockings – Love Circle will be making Christmas stockings for the ASAP Veterans this year. If you

are out shopping and see some Christmas material that would work well for stockings, please pick some up for them.

Bobbie Johnson (843-280-9242) can give you more information. Thanks to the Love Circle for doing this for our

ASAP Veterans.

Mobile Meals – Trinity delivers for a week (5 days) every 8 or 9 weeks. The next dates are August 8-12. If you

would like to be involved in this ministry, please contact Marie Cary (843-399-2968). Also, Mobile Meals is

looking for additional drivers. You will be trained for a daily route but will only drive 2 or 3 times a month.

Contact Marie about this also.

North Strand Helping Hand (NSHH) – Peanut butter and jelly (especially jelly) are needed by both ASAP and

NSHH. Please pick some up when you go shopping. ASAP will use what they need, and the remainder will go to

NSHH. These items are always needed by both NSHH and ASAP.

Time for the annual Helping Hand Shoe Drive. Look for more information in this newsletter.

Thanks for all that YOU do to support the mission projects of our Church.

If you have any questions about what your Missions’ Committee is doing or would like to help, please contact Frank

Autry (843-685-1190). You are also welcome to attend a committee meeting on the third Monday of each month at

9:00,am in the A.G. Greene building.

Can you believe it is time for the annual North Strand Helping Hand Back-to-School

Shoe Drive! It seems like school just got out! We will be taking donations to help

children in need purchase new shoes for school. We are collecting funds the month

of July, so we can have the gift cards to Helping Hands by August 1st. I am sure you

remember the feeling of a new pair of shoes the first day of school. Let’s help to pass

that feeling along to those children who are less fortunate. Thank you so much for

8 pm. Both are located on Kings Road, near Wal-Mart.

The Myrtle Beach Travel Park is free, and you can gain entry by telling

the person at the gate that you are with Trinity Church and the Daniel

Family. There is a nominal fee, however, to gain access to the Apache

Pier. Please come and join us for a evening of music and fun.

cided to change its format. We will meet to discuss books

we have read, talk about movies we’ve seen and exchange

our thoughts and share books. Good fellowship, good fun

and good books - all are welcome, both men and women.

The Administrative Council will meet on Tuesday, July 26 at

6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All committee chairpersons are

requested to attend. However, all members of the church are

welcome to attend. If members have items they would like to

have added to the agenda, please contact Alan Faulkenberry at

843-427-4013.

The TUMC Salkehatchie Summer Service team

would like to thank everyone who helped make our

week possible. Seven members of Trinity, as well as

2 other youth from NMB, traveled to St. Helena

Island (a barrier island off the coast of Beaufort) and spent the week of June

11th-June 18th serving 6 families by making repairs to their homes. We were

excited that 4 of our 7 members were youth who had finally reached the

magic age of 14. They learned to shingle a roof, use power tools, install

soffit, and lay tiles among other things. Friendships were formed with the

homeowners as well as workers from across the state. If you see any of the

workers, please congratulate them on completing a week of hard work that

began with a morning wakeup call at 5:30, breakfast at 6, and working on

the home sites from 7-5 followed by dinner and fellowship each evening. Oh

wait, we got up a 4:45 Wednesday morning and worked from 6-5. For those

of you wondering, YES the weather was HOT. The heat index was over 100

most days and reached up to 112. Thank you again for all of your support.
