Word in the World
Trinity
Sunday
Word in the World
Holy Mystery in whom we live and move and have our being How do we properly name God Some invent names for God
because what we have been using
no longer serves to describe
the indescribable for them
Abba God is what Jesus might have
called out to the One who sent him
In John’s gospel Jesus tells Nicodemus
that God loves this world
of God’s own making
and that our salvation is found
in the Son sent to live with us
as one of us
Our behavior in regard to one another
might tell us more about
the God we believe in
than any words we use to express
the content of our faith
Paul reminds us that
it is the God of love and peace
who desires to be with us in fellowship
In this time of turmoil
and of viral infections
we need the peace of God
to remain strong in our lives
With Moses we plead with God
to be with us in forgiveness
and acceptance
Strengthened by the Word
and responding to what we hear
we learn to follow the lead
of the Spirit that is the source
of all relationships graced
by God’s presence and action
Sacrament of Reconciliation
by appointment only

Can be done face-to-face or anonymously.

Exodus 34 Daniel 3 2 Corinthians 13 John 3
A Message from Fr. Val
On Friday, May 29th, in the early evening, I ran across a contract worker here at St. Patrick's, Ms. Lina, and parishioner John Hopkins. We started talking about the horrific murder of George Floyd. His death, as well as that of Ah-maud Arbery, the Georgia jogger gunned down, are recent names added to a long litany of black men--and women--"lynched" in our nation. I asked Ms. Lina if her three children are scared. She told me that they were too young. Then, Ms. Lina added, "But I am (scared)." Ms. Lina is the epitome of gentleness, and a woman with a deep faith in Je-sus. She and her husband have a great young family. (Ms. Lina gave me per-mission to share this conversation which I had with her.) "But I am (scared)." It's that systemic racism which has kneed the necks of so many per-sons of color in varied ways for centuries in our nation. As a white man,
I apologized to Ms. Lina. She told me that in no way have I shown it to her. I don't know. I wonder how that systemic racism has shown through me, I being raised right here in Memphis. Yes, I do apologize. There needs to be an ongoing examination of conscience in our nation and church. On so many levels, that systemic racism needs to be faced, and apologized for, and amendments made. Conversion is always hard to come by. I read that, on the night before his martyrdom here in Memphis, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said this: "But somewhere I read of the freedom of as-sembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of the press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right." As church here at St. Patrick's, let's get it "right.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED THIS FRIDAY MORNING, JUNE 12
Deacon Eugene Champion will complete his many years of service leading St Patrick Community Outreach, Inc. with a major food pan-
try give away this Friday, June 12. Volunteers are invited to wear masks and gloves and remain socially distant. You are asked to ar-
rive at 7:30am when a semi tractor trailer from the Mid-South Food Bank will deliver the food. We need volunteers to help stage the food
and prepare the forms our guests will
fill out in their cars. We need 20-30 volunteers. Our guests will collect food in the neighboring COGIC park-
ing lot 10am-12 noon. You’ll receive a blast email this week with specific volunteer opportunities.
Please email Joe Birch with your questions. [email protected] or call (901) 726-0419.
First Communion Sunday, June 7
11 o'clock Mass Why are our First Communicants wearing a white alb with a red cross? At our Bap-
tism our name was called by the Good Shepherd to receive his risen life and enter his sheepfold,
the Church. The white garment we wore as infants for our Baptism was a sign that we were "a new creation clothed in Christ' And the priest went on to pray: See in this white garment the out-ward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family ad friends to help you by word and
example, bring that dignity unstained into everlasting life. From the youngest ages in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd we ponder and enjoy the liturgical signs of Baptism, including the white garment. We believe the richness of this sign should not be lost or forgotten. Now we wear it to this new encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist, which is also a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. And we also carry our baptismal candles as a reminder of the gift of the light and life of the Risen Christ which we received in our Baptism, echoed in the words of the prayer the priest prayed: These children of yours have been enlightened by Christ. They are to walk always as children of the light. May they keep the flame of faith alive in their
hearts. When the Lord comes, may they go out to meet him with all the saints in the heav-enly kingdom.

What special kinds of service/ support/ products would you like to see the Outreach Center provide to help our clients per-severe in COVID-19? Centering Prayer Saturday mornings 9:15 a.m.
We are not currently meeting physically,
but we are meeting in Spirit, wherein 1 person is physically present to light the candle on the prayer table while the 20 mi-
nute Centering “sit” is being experienced by all participants: the one physically pre-
sent, with the photos of the others in the group on their chairs, and the “safe at home” participation
of those who are dis-tancing at this time. We are happy to be
holding that space, and “consenting to God’s presence and action in our lives,” and look forward to
us all being together again physically when that is possible. If
you would like to part of this experience, please contact Ro at [email protected].
Jan Kidder has formed an Email Interces-
sory Prayer Group to bring us together - and the power of the Spirit in two or three gathered together always does more than
we intend! Each week, you are invited to send your prayer requests to Jan by Mon-day evening; she will compile them and
email them to all participants by
Tuesday even-ing; we will each commit to pray-
ing the Rosary for all the inten-
tions sometime each Wednes-day. Prayer re-
quests cn be general, anonymous, specific, or even remain private. To join, or to find out more, please contact
Jan Kidder at [email protected] or 901-552-8390.

For the next Sundays, we will continue to have our streamed Sunday Mass at
11:00. For safety reasons, you may decide to participate in Mass through these
streamed Masses. Bishop David has dispensed everyone
from the obligation to come to Mass in the church through June 30th, 2020.
The Bishop recommends that if you are over 65, or if your health is weakened, please consider avoiding to return to Mass
at this time. The Bishop also advises fami-lies with small children to avoid returning
too quickly. As the Bishop stresses repeatedly, and as
you expect, assuring the safety of all pa-rishioners with social distancing of 6 feet is a critical part of these Masses.
“Living With Christ”
We subscribe to the Living With
Christ for those in our parish who want it. The date for the annual re-newal slipped past me in March. I renewed
but missed the cutoff to receive the June issue. I apologize but assure you that the
July edition will be available.
