Children’s Lesson

First Reading: Genesis 1:1–5

1In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earthwas a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while awind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, “Letthere be light”; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good;and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day,and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there wasmorning, the first day.

Second Reading: Acts 19:1–7

1While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regionsand came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them,“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” Theyreplied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3Then hesaid, “Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’sbaptism.” 4Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, tellingthe people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, inJesus.” 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied—7altogether there were abouttwelve of them.

APPLY

Maybe you have resolved to make changes in your life as weenter a new year, hoping the old ways give way to new ones? Inthis week’s Gospel from Mark, it was Nathanael, who needed tolet go of his prior thoughts about all people from Nazareth inorder to meet Jesus. It was at the urging and insistence of hisfriend, Philip, that this encounter was even possible. In our livestoday, how have we, too, at times had our perspectives changedby a friend who offered a different one? Are there ways we alsocould better share God’s message with those reluctant to hear?

PRAYER

Amazing God, You give us new opportunities every year, everyday. Help us to recognize that the lives of each of your childrenis special, and by opening ourselves to new ways of thinking, wecan learn something from their stories. Help us to more fullyrecognize that your presence and love can be found in what wemight consider the unlikeliest of people and places. Continue toguide us in our lives of faith throughout this new year. Amen.
