Our Rule and Norm by Michael J. Roth

We believe, teach, and confess that the
sole rule and standard according to
which all dogmas together with [all]
teachers should be estimated and
judged are the prophetic and apostolic
Scriptures of the Old and of the New
Testament alone, as it is written Ps. 119,
105: Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet
and a light unto my path. And St. Paul:
Though an angel from heaven preach
any other gospel unto you, let him be
accursed, Gal. 1, 8. (Formula of
Concord, Epitome, Rule and Norm, 1)
The above statement is part of our
confession of faith as Lutherans. It is
part of our Reformation heritage. The
phrase Luther used was "sola scriptura,"
meaning by "scripture alone" are all
teachings in the church formulated and
judged. This must remain our stance
even in our day when challenges to the
Word of God come in many forms.
Because of the spread of many other
religions in our country we are often
asked to accept other writings on the
same authority as the Bible. These
writings often include: the Koran, the
Talmud, the Book of Mormon, or other
"official" interpretations of the Scripture.
I received an invitation recently to
attend a full day seminar, sponsored by
a Christian church, to hear about the
sacred writing of several religions. They
were all given equal billing and were
being presented as a harmonious
package. The accompanying
information said that true peace could
be found in many places.
We are also challenged by many in our
modern age to question all written
authority, especially the Bible. We are
encouraged to question the
supernatural accounts of the Bible. Our
rationalistic mind is to reject what our
senses cannot perceive,and our mind
cannot understand. This approach would
suggest that we accept those things of
Scripture that fit our worldview and reject
those things that do not.
The problem with these two challenges to
the authority of God's Word is that they rely
on another authority to either reject or
accept the written word. That authority is
man himself. Either we each become our
own master or judge, or we depend on
someone else to be so for us. In either case
we are putting our trust, indeed staking
our life, on fallible and flawed human
beings. History itself shows how often man
can change his thinking on and opinions of
what is truth. If you take these paths who
knows where you would end up. Many
have done so and rejected the faith all
together.
What a blessing it is from God to have
been given the Holy Scriptures. The Bible is
the divine Word of God, inspired and
inerrant. It is true in its every detail and
completely authoritative in all areas of the
Christian faith and life. Not only can we
trust it to be reliable, we can also depend
on it to be sufficient. We do not need to
determine what is true and what is not and
we need no other writings.
The greatest blessing from the Word of
God is the message of Christ. The written
Word brings us the incarnate Word. Jesus
said, "These are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of
God, and that by believing you may have
life in his name." (Jn. 20:31) Through the
written Word of the Gospel God is pleased
to create and strengthen faith in Christ.
With faith in Christ we have all the
blessings He died to earn – forgiveness, life
and salvation. Lord, keep us steadfast in
your Word!

ADULT BIBLE STUDY – 'PAUL’S LETTER TO TITUS’
Tom Bird is leading an in depth study of Paul's Letter to Titus.
The letter to Titus is a little known Pastoral letter in the New
Testament; but it is a treasure trove of rich teachings to discover.
Martin Luther says of Titus: "This is a short epistle, but a model
of Christian doctrine, in which is comprehended in a
meaningful way all that is necessary for a Christian to know
and to live." Our goal is 1) to picture the actual situation and
issues of the church on the Island of Crete where Titus served as
pastor; 2) to understand the inspired teaching of the Apostle
Paul relating to the situation and issues; and 3) to apply those
very teachings to our individual spiritual development and to
our congregation as a whole in our very day in age.
Again Luther says of the letter to Titus; "Paul teaches various
estates-the older, the younger, wives, husbands, masters,
slaves-how they are to act, as those whom Christ, by his death,
has won for his own." All are welcome to the class held in the
fellowship hall. Coffee in one hand, Bible in the other, you are
ready get started.

SON-RISERS BIBLE STUDY
Vocation: God Serves through Us
Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions proclaim and teach
the true meaning of vocation. As children of God, we not only
have a place in God's heavenly kingdom, but we also have
been given a new status here in God's earthly kingdom. How
do we balance this dichotomy? Christians are faced with many
questions about living a Christian life in a secular world: How
can I live a Christian life in a secular workplace? Is my job,
which is not directly affiliated with the Church, God-pleasing?
How can I balance my calling as a Christian with my calling as
a citizen of this community? This study will examine these
questions from a distinctly Lutheran perspective. The richness
of the Gospel will be extolled as we explore this doctrine of
vocation—a Christian's service to others and their service to
us in this world.

the ground running. Our classrooms
are mostly full and so are our hearts.
We love each and every child God has
given us here in the ECC to care for
each week. We are honored to love,
teach, interact, guide, protect and care
for each and every one. The beginning
of the year brings new faces, new staff,
new routine and new families. It is such
an exciting time. Our first big moment
to shine is Christian Education Sunday
where all the children in preschool and
up get a chance to sing for the
congregation here at Trinity. I hope you were able to
experience this remarkable event. If you missed it, don’t
worry, there will be lots of other opportunities for you to

you all for your prayers and support as we begin another

"Prayers For Sale" by Sandra Dallas
Hennie Comfort is eighty-six and has lived in the mountains of Middle Swan, Colorado since
before it was Colorado. Nit Spindle is just seventeen and newly married. She and her husband
have just moved to the high country in search of work. It's 1936 and the depression has ravaged
the country and Nit and her husband have suffered greatly. Hennie notices the young woman
loitering near the old sign outside of her house that promises "Prayers For Sale". Hennie doesn't
sell prayers, never has, but there's something about the young woman that she's drawn to. The
harsh conditions of life that each have endured create an instant bond and an unlikely friendship
is formed, one in which the deepest of hardships are shared and the darkest of secrets are
confessed. Sandra Dallas has created an unforgettable tale of a friendship between two women,
one with surprising twists and turns, and one that is ultimately a revelation of the finest parts of
the human spirit.

Sleeping Mat Ministry / PLARN Gathering
The Sleeping Mat Ministry is looking for volunteers to assist in cutting the plastic bags. Also
assembling the bags into Plarn (plastic yarn) and crocheting the Plarn into the mats. Once a mat
is completed they will be distributed into our community to the homeless. This is something that
can be done at home or you are in invited to come to the Plarn Gathering which meets the 2nd
and 4th Monday of the month, from 2:00-4:00pm in the Lighthouse Cafe, Trinity Ministry Center .
The most important thing that we all can do is keep those that are homeless in our prayers. For
more information please contact the church office. Trinity Quilters meet on Thursdays, from 11a to
2:30p to work on quilts, to date this year, they have completed 24 quilts to be sent to the less
fortunate overseas, through the Lutheran World Relief organization. They are also providing
small quilts for infant baptisms at our church. Work can be done at home making squares and
then bringing them back to the group to put together. If you know how to tie knots you can be of
great help to this group. If you have questions or are interested in joining this group, call Helen
@ 429-8503 or the church office at 983-5000.
TRINITY QUILTERS

Thursdays between 11am – 2:30pm
For our first stop will we will be meeting at
Kilwins in downtown St. Joe at 2 p.m. for an
early or a late dessert of a single dip ice cream
cone of your very own favorite flavor. What
better way to start an excursion, then by having
dessert first…yum!
The next stop will be for a tour/talk at the
Morton House, 501 Terriortial Road, BH from
2:30 to 3:30. There is no elevator. There are
steps going into the beautiful house and also
to the bedrooms upstairs. However, there is so
much history in this house. There are all the
memories from our ancestors while viewing
items from the past. We will all enjoy listening
to the stories about the house that makes it
awesome to enjoy. Don’t miss out on this
experience!
After the Morton House visit, we will go to
Eden Springs Park, 793 M139, BH at 3:30 for
individual group tours and a train rides.
Again, memory mode in full bloom while
visiting this site. They will be bringing in extra
help for us to enjoy, and they promise that
they will be decorated for halloween, which
supposedly is cool.

each person, payable when you sign up with Betty
at church office by Wednesday, October 16th.

began this Campaign together, we set a goal of $2,000,000. We aren't there yet but God has already moved mountains and we
believe that He can accomplish much more! Our Infant Room is ready for inspection and we are eager to move in! Feel free to
stop by and see the exciting things happening in our ECC. As always, we ask that you keep our Capital Campaign in your prayers.
God is working faithfully through you, His people. To God be the glory.
A hot lunch program was being offered at Trinity Lutheran School in 1947. Here
is an invitation in the monthly newsletter for all women of the church to
participate:
August 17, 1947 -- SOMETHING NEW! -- A project is underway to assist the
school hot lunch committee which is supervising the canning of fruits, vegetables
and pickles which are being donated by many members in support of the
children's hot lunch program. If you are interested in assisting this group of
canners, either in the school kitchen or in your own home, please contact Mrs.
Elsie Glossinger, phone #3-3797, and advise if you are able to help. Donations
of any kind in the line of foods, empty cans, or cans already filled, for this cause
are all most welcome. Thank you.
The early 1940s were the WWII war years, a very stressful time for all citizens of
the United States with everyone doing their part in the war effort. Citizens
saved metal cans (nothing was thrown away) and grew "victory gardens" for
food and used ration stamps for other food items that could not be grown. The
list goes on and on.
In April 1944, Nineteen Hundred Corporation (now Whirlpool) was honored
with a very prestigious award. It was the Army-Navy "E" Award for
Excellence in War Production. This award was an honor accorded only a few
manufacturing plants in the nation which produced units while participating
in the war effort. Less than 3 percent of those manufacturing plants had
been selected to receive this award. Even before Pearl Harbor, Nineteen
Hundred Corporation had been making "gun mounts" of the highest quality
and … on schedule.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Doris Frobel, worked in the office of
Nineteen Hundred Corporation. She was singled out to receive this
prestigious award from the company:
In appreciation to DORIS FROBEL For the splendid cooperation
which made possible the Achievement of the Army-Navy "E" Award
For Excellence in Production

Please keep all of our Servicemen and women in
your prayers. May God keep them safe from harm
and bring them home to their families soon. If your
status has changed, please call the church office.
Hebrews 13:12-14 - So Jesus also
suffered outside the gate in order to
sanctify the people through His own
blood. Therefore let us go to Him
outside the camp and bear the
reproach He endured. For here we
have no lasting city, but we seek the
city that is to come.
"Here we have no lasting city." Oh, how
true that is! For this is a time of grief
and loss for so many of us. The things
we have trusted in—the things we have
loved and served and placed our hopes
in, sometimes for all our lives—seem to
be falling apart. We are afraid. We
grieve.
For some of us, it is worry over our
country—the land, the people, a
recession, the institutions we love. We
see evil things happening that we never
could have imagined, and we feel
powerless to stop them. Neighbor rises
up against neighbor, and we find
ourselves in conflict with the very
people we love. The foundations of the
earth seem to be shaken. And as we
pray, we are reminded that no nation
endures forever.
For some of us, our worries are closer
to home—at church or work. We may
be living through a time of church
conflict—or the simple years-long loss
of membership. No congregation
endures forever. Or at work we may
face job loss or transfer or even the
expected but still difficult transition to
retirement. No job lasts forever.
Hardest of all are the changes in our
families. We lose people we love to
death, divorce, or estrangement.
Others move away. Children grow up
and leave the nest—a good thing, but
still hard. Even our families don't last
forever.
In the midst of all this, what should
we do? What can we hold on to? God
tells us: "Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday and today and forever"
(Hebrews 13:8). Or as He says in
another place, "Even to your old age I
am He, and to gray hairs I will carry
you. I have made, and I will bear; I
will carry and will save" (Isaiah 46:4).
Jesus is the One we can cling to with
all our might. He will not change. He
has not changed, ever since we were
children, ever since the first day He
called us to Himself in faith. He is still
the same Savior who laid down His
life for us on the cross—the same
Lord who took up His life again when
He rose from the dead on the third
day afterward. None of our losses
catches Him by surprise. He will carry
us through all of them.
Have you been foolish enough to put
your hopes in something mortal: in
money or in politics or work or family
or denominational structures? If so,
welcome to the human race. You are
like all the rest of us. But now it is
time to take those hopes and put
them where they have belonged all
along—in the Lord of the only city
that endures, in Jesus Christ.
Absolutely, He will forgive us. And He
will never let us down.
Lord of the everlasting city of God,
help me to trust You with all my heart,
and to look to You for everything I
need. Amen.
Stewardship

What Does a Deaconess Do?
The primary role of a deaconess is to walk
alongside the people, but what does this look
like? She regularly attends worship services and
Bible studies with the congregation. She attends
meetings such as voters, council, board of
education, and more. Though she is not a voting
member of the congregation, she can offer
counsel and advice. It is also important that she
remain connected and aware of the happenings
and goings on in the congregation.
A big part of walking alongside people is putting
in the face time. It is important for a deaconess to
take time to meet with the people and talk with
them. This is not always serious conversation, but
oftentimes is just simply chatting and getting to
know them. The people must know who she is,
get to know her, and learn to trust her with the
little things, so that when big things happen they
feel comfortable going to her to talk about what
is happening in their lives. It is imperative that
they first talk about the nothings, so that when
something happens, something bad or
embarrassing or something they are ashamed to
bring out in the open, they know that they can
trust her with their stories, and that she will help
them carry their burdens.
This kind of work is hard to see. It means that
having a visible record of "results" doesn't always
happen. The deaconess, like the pastor, works not
just with earthly things, but with the care of souls.
The way this is done looks different from how the
pastor cares for their souls, certainly, but that
doesn't make it unimportant. The deaconess helps
to care for the needs of the body, so that she (and
the pastor) can care for their souls. A person who
is burdened by the cares of the world, such as
sorrow, anger, hunger, or pain, has a much
harder time listening and hearing about Christ.
These are the things that close the ears to the
Word.
Yet she can not do this work alone. She sees and
discovers needs, and she finds ways to fill those
needs. She doesn't try to fill every need all on her
own. Instead, she enlists willing members of the
congregations to take part in the care of their
brother or sister in Christ. She works to facilitate
the mercy and care that is needed by making
connections by bringing those who want to serve
together with those who are in need.
This is not to say that the deaconess herself does
not participate in the goings on of the church.
She is not just a facilitator, but it is wrong to think
"ah we have a deaconess now, that means she
takes care of all of the things we used to get
beleaguered into volunteering for!" By no means.
She is called to walk alongside, not walk for. Each
Christian is still called to love and serve their
neighbor, but the deaconess can help them find
out who to serve and how they may serve them.
Yet a deaconess is not a shepherd. She does not
lead from the front. She is like the faithful
sheepdog, minding the sheep but following the
voice of the shepherd. Perhaps this is not a very
flattering metaphor, but we often refer to the
church as a flock, to the pastor as a shepherd. It's
not so very flattering to be called a sheep either.
Yet what are the qualities of the sheepdog?
Loyalty, being observant, faithfulness. What is this
but a reflection of the Good Shepherd? The One
who calls us who is Faithful, even when His sheep
go astray. He does not abandon us to the
wilderness, but He finds us and brings us home to
Himself. "He who calls you is faithful; he will
surely do it" (1 Thess. 5:24).
Happy Fall!

Faith in Verse – From God Can Nothing Move Me
by Bob Lawrence
Yet even though I suffer That day of bliss divine,
The world's unpleasantness, Which knows no end or measure,
And though the days grow rougher And Christ, who is my pleasure,
And bring me great distress, Forever shall be mine. (LSB 713, verse 6)
Christians don't have to work hard to make a case for the world's "unpleasantness." A quick run
through of the channel menu on the television screen or a few minutes of any news channel with all
the reports of violence, terrorism, and acts of hatred among the people of the world speak for
themselves. The sad thing about all this is that there are no immediate signs that the world is going
to get any better. In fact, it's hard not to believe that our days will only "grow rougher."
It's hard then not to join the growing masses of people who cave in to all this "great distress." Many
seem to be running from one vice to another in order to find some relief from all the worries that
surround them. If it's not some substance that clouds their minds for a while and give them a false
sense of peace and happiness, it's the dream of quick wealth which, when it can not be achieved
through luck, can be stolen through stealth or blatant violence. The sad result of any unspiritual
escape is a dead end which brings only more pain and despair.
This verse offers two far better options for people of God. The first is to place all our hope in God's
plan of salvation, because at the end of this difficult journey waits a place for us where the cares of
this world have no part. This mighty hope lifts us up from despair and lightens our load. For not only
will Christ be there to welcome us, but He is here right now among us offering the same comfort
and peace that He brought to the first Christians during His time on earth. Being with HIm forever is
more than enough to get us through whatever the world throws at us.
