THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to everyone who sent in donations for our cake stalls. What a lovely end to a busy week!

Preschool have shown a great interest in pirates this week. They have been making treasure maps, pirate hats and Jolly Roger flags. They have been playing with pirate ships and calling "Ahoy there me hearties!" Reception were extremely excited to see that our tadpoles are turning into froglets, so they will soon be returned to their pond. The children have been reading 'The Enormous Turnip' and 'The Gigantic Turnip', looking at the differ-ences and similarities between the two stories. I have seen some super writing today – Well done children!

This week, Year 1 have been writing brilliant questions to send to Rosie Revere and Great Great Aunt Rose. All of the questions were well linked to our story and showed a really deep understanding of the characters; a fa-vourite was ‘Who inspired you to create these inventions?’ – WOW! They have been busy preparing for next week’s Sports Day with some fun track training in PE. They have also been designing and building their own fly-ing machines - they look beautiful, so do come and see them in their outside area!

The Year 2 children have been using standard and non-standard measures to find the length of many items around the school this week. They have supported each other really well and the measuring has included:

the length of children's arms, legs and in some cases... plaits! In English, they have been writing their own short piece of narrative based on David Walliam's latest book 'FING'. The children are really enjoying the story and some have even purchased their own copy. In Art, they have been finishing their hot air balloons and in RE, they have been asking some 'BIG Questions' linked to The Story of Creation.

This week the Year 3 and 4 children have continued to be inspired by their fantastic novel of 'Stig of the Dump'. The Year 3 children came into school on Wednesday to find that 'Stig' had built a cave in their classroom. The children have been taking turns to do their reading and writing in the cave. Next week, they will be making some tools and Stone Age art to decorate the inside. The Year 4 children have completed their ‘Stig’ diary en-tries and then had a lovely morning sharing their work with Year 3. In topic, they have been making Andy Goldsworthy sculptures on the field with lots of different materials. They looked fab - Do ask the children all about them!

This week, Year 5 have been making the most of the glorious weather by using the amazing outdoor classroom as much as possible. The class have also enjoyed improving their cricket skills with a mini class cricket competi-tion. Inside their own classroom, the class used different applications on the laptops to design their own class-room in Computing - The designs were excellent!

Mr Gatrill would like to say a HUGE well done to everyone in Year 6 for having such an amazing attitude this weeks as they all took their end of Key Stage 2 SATs. They were immensely courageous, level headed and resili-ent. We are enormously proud of every single one of them. In other news, our end of year production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ has been announced and the excitement is rapidly growing. It promises to be a truly magical experience a ‘tale as old as time’.”

Looking forward to next week, we have Sports activities all week culminating with our Sports days on Friday –Eppleby Forcett am and Middleton Tyas pm. The weather forecast looks perfect – not too hot but little chance of rain! I look forward to seeing you in school soon.

For day-to-day enquiries please contact the school office or speak to your child(ren)’s class teacher. As you know, I work for the Federation for 50% of the week and share my time between school sites, so am not always available. Do remember that our Head of School, Mrs McLean, can be contacted on a daily basis if necessary.

OUR LINK WITH TANZANIA

We are extremely excited and proud to announce that we have recently opened a link with a primary school in Tanzania.

As a school, we will be looking at ways in which we can support this beautiful community who meet extreme challenges on a daily basis.

Below is a description of the school from our Tanzanian link.

KENOKWE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The school has 766 pupils and 8 teachers (7 males and 1 female). The children’s age ranges from 5 to 15 years old and they come from all the nearby villages, some children walk for about 9 Kilometres one way to come to school everyday. The school has six (06) classrooms which are not well finished but are being used as they don’t have proper floor, windows, doors or desks to seat on, so the class sizes are big and there are more than 100 children in each class. At school no meals nor drinks are provide. The school starts at 7:30 am and ends up at 4:20 pm.

Despite the challenges that the children and the school faces, children are so eager and determined to learn.

The nearest hospital is in Mugumu (20kms away) and the only source of water for now is from a nearby river, but this dries up during the dry season. During the wet season there are swamps and a small dam where they get water, but this is used by all the villages around for human consumption as well for their animals. This water isn’t clean and frankly speaking water borne diseases are so common.

The school had a plan of harvesting water from the roofs of the classrooms but this has failed due to the finan-cial constraints the school and the village are facing. 2 tanks of water of about 5,000 litres each would be very helpful. The children could use one tank and the teachers who reside near the school could use the other one. To my opinion the best way to help the school or the village would have been a borehole but I am afraid as that would be a very big project for the school.

PARKING AT BOTH SCHOOLS

Please can all parents ensure they park thoughtfully and safely at both of our schools. We need to ensure that children and the general public are safe at all times and that our neighbours can always access their proper-ties. At Eppleby - Please refrain from using the road adjacent to the main school gate when dropping off or col-lecting children from school, including breakfast club and afterschool club. We are very mindful that this road is used by residents to access their properties and do not wish to cause them any distress. The bus is also using this road as a safe collection and drop off point to ensure the children are not disembarking onto a main road. At Middleton Tyas - Please refrain from blocking residents driveways and avoid parking in a way that would obscure a pedestrian’s or driver’s view. Please do not park in the vicinity of the staff carpark area as the school bus needs full access to this area. Many thanks.

COURSES AT RICHMOND SCHOOL

YES at Richmond School offers many events and infor-mation sessions for parents, carers and children.

Please click on the link below to be taken to their website which details all events that are taking place.

YES@Richmond School

Below are details of the latest 2 events. They only have 3 places left on the Dancing for All.

COMMUNITY

HALF TERM SESSIONS

There will be an evening with the newly restored organ at St Michael and All Angels Church.

They have completed an extensive overhaul and res-toration of the historic church organ. While work was

in progress and the instrument dismantled, many people expressed interest in knowing what all the

large number of component parts were for and how the instrument worked.

They are therefore having an information evening when all can quite literally be revealed!

Do go along and see the inner workings, discover how the sounds are produced, learn what the knobs are for, see why there are three keyboards, hear short

extracts of music which illustrate its capabilities and try it for yourself.

THURSDAY 23RD MAY

7PM

Light refreshments available.

There is no charge but donations will be gratefully received.
