WHERE: CLINIC 42Those who have heard about the Vampire Facial, now infamousin popular culture, will know that a PRP treatment involvestaking a small sample of blood from a patient's arm, processingit to isolate and extract growth factors and other particles thathelp the body's self-healing process and injecting this back intothe desired area, including the face, like Kim Kardashian, neck,a la The Real Housewives of Auckland, and now, eyes, for SimplyYou magazine.

"One of my main beauty concerns is the fine lines andthinning skin that has started to appear around my eyes," saysElise Wilson. "I liked the idea of PRP injections to combat this,as the plasma is taken from my own blood with no risk ofallergic reaction."WHAT TO EXPECT: The face is thoroughly cleansed andnumbing cream is applied before the a small sample of thepatient's blood is taken. They are then left to relax for half anhour while the face numbs and the blood undergoes specialprocessing. "The actual procedure was relatively quick, andinstead of lots of small injections from a needle, my clinicianused a micro-cannula [a smooth needledevice] for an almost pain-free and near ^ ^ — ^ ^ ^ —bruise-free placement."

With the cannula, only a few entry pointsare needed and it enables the product toget even closer to the waterline of the eye."The sensation was odd having somethingso close to my eye, but the numbing creamworked well."

Wilson says it felt like an odd tuggingsensation on her upper and lower lid.Immediately afterwards, her eyelidsfelt heavy and looked swollen but thesereactions subsided in a couple of hours."Swelling was so minimal I felt like I couldhave gone out that night!"

A month before thefirst treatment she started applyingserums customised for her skin by TheFacialist with prescription-only brandDermaviduals. "I did get a breakout fromthis range as the toxins from my skinwere releasing."

After a half-hour deep cleanse a DermaCIT pen - covered with tiny needles topenetrate the upper layers of skin to a depthof up to 1.5 mm - is used for skin needling,

which itself takes about 10 minutes."The tool, which looks like a pen with very small needles on

the end, started on my cheeks. It was then adjusted for differentskin types. For example, the needling was deeper on my cheeksand lighter around my eye," she says. "The first time it was sore,it felt like my face was being tattooed - but, like a tattoo,as soon as it gets to the point where you can't handle it theymove onto another area."

"I booked my treatment on a Friday afternoon so I hadtime for my skin to settle," says Larkin. WHERE: CLINIC 42A Photo Finish treatment delivers hyaluronic acid andbotulinum toxin into the superficial layers of the skin with aneedling gun. Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture so it's usedto super-hydrate the skin while tiny doses of botulinum toxin,which is used in a Botox treatment, smooths fine lines anddecreases the action of sweat and sebaceous glands on thesuperficial layer of facial muscles. The procedure improves

sheen and smoothness of the skin and tightens pores whilemaintaining facial mobility and expression. Like otherneedling treatments, the process encourages collagenstimulation as well.WHAT TO EXPECT: Sylvie Horton tried one treatment,showing up about 45 minutes early to have numbing creamapplied. This stung and had a mild burning sensation butshe says soon everything went numb.

The treatment itself involves a handheld Vital gun devicewith nine tiny needles moving across the face. This takes aboutan hour and was tolerable, albeit painful.

"Overall I found it bearable. Some shots were considerablymore painful, especially on my nose, but I didn't feel it at allaround my hairline," she says. "I think the fear of how bad thenext shot would be was worse than most of the pain."

The next day a few small incisions could be seen where theneedles had punctured her skin and there was a lump betweenthe eyes and in a couple of other areas, which she was toldneeded to be massaged further into the skin.Patients can experience these bumps, redness, and somebruising after the treatment and mineral makeup cancamouflage most of this.

For Horton, her skin felt a little tighter and slightly bumpythe day after the treatment. Two days later she had sore-to-touch bumps over her face. "I had to wear a lot of make-up asmy skin was red and uneven," she says. "A small bruise undermy eye spread and it was quite noticeable. It took a week for myskin to settle."

Naomi Larkin treated her handswith IPL, where short, safe bursts of intense pulsed light arcdirected at the skin. Attracted to pigment in the hands' skinit heats this up and denatures it. The light also stimulates thefibroblast cells, which will encourage collagen and elastinproduction for stronger, nicer textured skin.WHAT TO EXPECT: "My hands really troubled me as theylook older than my age," says Larkin.
