Simply You I APPEARANCE MEDICINE

With a range of new non-invasive appearancemedicine procedures promising minimaldowntime and maximum results, the SimplyYou team put 10youth-inducing treatments tothe test. Jessica-Belle Greer reports.

While it would be nice to take 10 years off our face,it would be quite alarming for our family, friendsand acquaintances if we appeared one day with adrastically different look. The beauty of non-

invasive appearance medicine lies in its ability to plump, even, tighten, brighten and generally improve our appearance overtime, leaving our beholders wondering how we managed to tapinto the elusive fountain of youth.

According to data from the British Association of AestheticPlastic Surgeons, the number of cosmetic operations in theUnited Kingdom fell 40 per cent in 2016 to a near-decade low. While cosmetic surgery seems to be slowing down, a numberof new appearance medicine techniques are gaining attentionfor their subtle yet successful results. Popular non-invasivetreatments, including Fraxel laser and Collagen Induction, draw on the skin's ability to renew and restore itself for a morerealistic, refreshed look. Promising less pain, little-to-no resttime and a radiant complexion, these treatments are not acompromise for those afraid of going under the knife buta more holistic approach to ageing.

Once the calling card of cosmetic enhancement, Botoxis even having a sympathetic image update. Not only hasbotulinum toxin's use spread to treating ailments such asdepression and migraines, its aesthetic application is expandingto include injections to the superficial layer of facial musclesas part of a rejuvenating treatment.

When it comes to improving a feature as obvious as yourface it can still be quite scary to book an appointment withoutknowing what to expect. Having put this very magazinetogether, we at Simply You have our fingers on the pulse of thelatest age-positive procedures. Who better to walk the talk, ormore accurately lie down in a comfortable clinic bed, and trythe treatments?

While some solutions required a red-faced night at home,in other cases we were able to nip out of the office for anappointment and be back at work or off to an event with onlya dusting of mineral powder hiding a slight flush from our brushwith the elixir of youth.

PLATELET RICH PLASMASKIN REJUVENATION (PRP)AROUND THE EYESElise Wilson, beauty editor

WHERE: CLINIC 42Those who have heard about the Vampire Facial, now infamousin popular culture, will know that a PRP treatment involvestaking a small sample of blood from a patient's arm, processingit to isolate and extract growth factors and other particles thathelp the body's self-healing process and injecting this back intothe desired area, including the face, like Kim Kardashian, neck,a la The Real Housewives of Auckland, and now, eyes, for SimplyYou magazine.

"One of my main beauty concerns is the fine lines andthinning skin that has started to appear around my eyes," saysElise Wilson. "I liked the idea of PRP injections to combat this,as the plasma is taken from my own blood with no risk ofallergic reaction."WHAT TO EXPECT: The face is thoroughly cleansed andnumbing cream is applied before the a small sample of thepatient's blood is taken. They are then left to relax for half anhour while the face numbs and the blood undergoes specialprocessing. "The actual procedure was relatively quick, andinstead of lots of small injections from a needle, my clinicianused a micro-cannula [a smooth needledevice] for an almost pain-free and near ^ ^ — ^ ^ ^ —bruise-free placement."

With the cannula, only a few entry pointsare needed and it enables the product toget even closer to the waterline of the eye."The sensation was odd having somethingso close to my eye, but the numbing creamworked well."

Wilson says it felt like an odd tuggingsensation on her upper and lower lid.Immediately afterwards, her eyelidsfelt heavy and looked swollen but thesereactions subsided in a couple of hours."Swelling was so minimal I felt like I couldhave gone out that night!"

Wilson underwent three treatments and says all were asrelaxed as the other.HIDDEN BENEFITS: Minor swelling, bruising and rednessmay be present immediately after the treatment. For Wilson, the initial slight swelling rid the eyes of the fine lines but thereal results took a few months to materialise.

Clinic 42 says over three weeks the PRP stimulation willgradually improve the texture and tone of your skin, and thisimprovement will continue over ensuing months. Althoughit is different for everyone, the clinic advises having threetreatments at four-week intervals and the results should lastup to 18 months.

The great thingabout this procedure

is that it's a giftthat keeps giving."

Elise Wilson

"By looking at my before and after photos, I can now clearlysee the difference in the lift of my eyelid contour and the finelines around the edges," says Wilson. "The great thing aboutthis procedure is that it's a gift that keeps giving."

Our plasma is full of growth factors that keep working underthe skin. It's recommended that you only need to go back once ayear for a top-up.PAIN RATING: 3/10COST: One-off treatment, $2,000 (with doctor), $1,500 (withcosmetic nurse).Course of three, $2,800 (with doctor), $1,800 (with nurse).

WHERE: THE FACIALISTOur skin has a natural ability to repair itself with collagenwhenever it encounters physical damage. Based on thisknowledge, skin needling - also known as micro-needling- controls the skin's self-repair mechanism by creatingmicro 'injuries' to stimulate elastin and collagen formation,as well as providing a clear channel for topical serums to beabsorbed more effectively. This treatment smooths wrinkles, evens pigmentation and improves the appearance of scars for

firmer and younger looking skin.WHAT TO EXPECT: Louise Hilsztrialled the Collagen Induction Therapy(CIT) treatment with the recommended, three one-hour treatments, at intervalsof six weeks. A month before thefirst treatment she started applyingserums customised for her skin by TheFacialist with prescription-only brandDermaviduals. "I did get a breakout fromthis range as the toxins from my skinwere releasing."

After a half-hour deep cleanse a DermaCIT pen - covered with tiny needles topenetrate the upper layers of skin to a depthof up to 1.5 mm - is used for skin needling,

which itself takes about 10 minutes."The tool, which looks like a pen with very small needles on

the end, started on my cheeks. It was then adjusted for differentskin types. For example, the needling was deeper on my cheeksand lighter around my eye," she says. "The first time it was sore,it felt like my face was being tattooed - but, like a tattoo,as soon as it gets to the point where you can't handle it theymove onto another area."

After this, a cooling pack is applied to the area. The patientwill also need to be under a light for around 20 minutes to helpease inflammation and redness.

"The second time it was a breeze, I knew how it would feel

Immediately afterwards and for the next day her skin wasvery red and tight, as if it was sunburnt, then for the next weekit was "slightly itchy".HIDDEN BENEFITS: "As the weeks went by my skin becameso clear - my pigmentation and scarring almost completelydisappeared," says Hilsz.

The Facialist says it takes up to 18 months for the best resultsand while a top-up treatment is recommended annually. Ifyou have scarring and pigmentation you want to target, thiscan take slightly longer.PAIN RATING: 7/10COST: CIT consultation, $55 (redeemable against firsttreatment if booked at time of consultation).One-off treatment, $349 (includes follow-up appointment anda half-hour facial).Course of four, $1,249.Skincare regime not included in price.

DERMAFRACElise Wilson, beauty editor

WHERE: THE FACE PLACEDermaFrac tailors micro-needling technology to improvescarring and skin hydration, superficial lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and sunspots.WHAT TO EXPECT: "First, my face was cleansed thoroughlyand then assessed to identify my primary concerns," saysElise Wilson. "Because DermaFrac is a tailored treatment,we discussed my skin and the selection of treatment serums, including Hydrating, Rejuvenating and Growth Factor. I wentwith the Growth Factors as fine lines are my worry."

A precision controlled handpiece containing the micro-needle roller tip and a cartridge of the chosen serum is movedacross the skin to help stimulate collagen production andcellular renewal. The vacuum gently pulls the skin into contactwith hundreds of micro-needles that painlessly penetratethrough the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) and into theupper dermis beneath this.

"It was comfortable and relaxing, with only a slight skinredness straight after the appointment. If anything, the buzzingof the needling device can get tiresome - or for someone likeme, lull you to sleep!"HIDDEN BENEFITS: "At one-hour per appointment andno downtime, this is totally do-able within a lunch-time slot,"says Wilson.

While she had this done as a standalone treatment, formaximum results a course of six treatments at weekly intervalsis suggested.

Even still, Wilson experienced "extremely smooth, hydratedand plump" skin immediately after the treatment and this

FRAXELNaomi Larkin, editorWHERE: ABOUT FACEFraxel is a laser resurfacing treatment designed to reduce finelines, refine texture and even out the complexion for fresher, more youthful skin. The invisible laser targets water moleculesin the skin and creates microscopic columns that encourage theskin into a rapid wound healing process to stimulate collagenand elastin production.WHAT TO EXPECT: About Face's Fraxel Re:fine treatmenthas been developed for a more tolerable, less aggressivetreatment, with a quicker recovery time. A typical treatmentis completed in about 40 minutes, but an appointment time oftwo hours is given to allow for pre and post-care.

A topical anaesthetic is applied before the procedure tominimise discomfort and cold air is applied throughout thetreatment to help combat the heat skin generates. Most peoplewill still experience a prickling sensation during the treatment.

Naomi Larkin had three sessions and found the process notnearly as scary as she expected. "I was freaked out by otherpeople's Fraxel horror stories however. About Face is theonly company in the country with this particular machineso the pain was fine and recovery faster," she says. After the

procedure, it is common to experience a sunburned feelingbut this usually subsides after two to three hours. Some clientsexperience a mild swelling and puffiness for two to three days.

"I booked my treatment on a Friday afternoon so I hadtime for my skin to settle," says Larkin. "My skin did getprogressively redder and redder, although the amount ofcolour decreased with each treatment."HIDDEN BENEFITS: Results can be visible within aweek of treatment but skin will progressively improveover the next few months as your own natural collagen andelastin rebuilds and replaces the damaged tissue. Optimalimprovement is seen in four to six months after your treatmentcourse has finished.

"This is the best thing I have ever done for my skin," saysLarkin. "Overall, my skin looks firmer, more even and smooth.I absolutely recommend it and will repeat it in two years."

An effective treatment plan usually includes three Fraxeltreatments with three Omnilux light therapy appointments, spaced approximately three to four weeks apart. Anddepending on the skin requirements, more treatments maybe recommended. About Face also recommends wearingsunblock every day to keep your skin looking youthful.PAIN RATING: 4/10COST: Consultation $55 (cost is redeemable on treatmentsbooked on the day).One-off treatment, around $999.Renew You package including a course of three Fraxel Re:fineLaser treatments and three Omnilux Light Therapies, $2,400.

PHOTO FINISH TREATMENTSylvie Horton, art director

WHERE: CLINIC 42A Photo Finish treatment delivers hyaluronic acid andbotulinum toxin into the superficial layers of the skin with aneedling gun. Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture so it's usedto super-hydrate the skin while tiny doses of botulinum toxin, which is used in a Botox treatment, smooths fine lines anddecreases the action of sweat and sebaceous glands on thesuperficial layer of facial muscles. The procedure improves

sheen and smoothness of the skin and tightens pores whilemaintaining facial mobility and expression. Like otherneedling treatments, the process encourages collagenstimulation as well.WHAT TO EXPECT: Sylvie Horton tried one treatment, showing up about 45 minutes early to have numbing creamapplied. This stung and had a mild burning sensation butshe says soon everything went numb.

The treatment itself involves a handheld Vital gun devicewith nine tiny needles moving across the face. This takes aboutan hour and was tolerable, albeit painful.

"Overall I found it bearable. Some shots were considerablymore painful, especially on my nose, but I didn't feel it at allaround my hairline," she says. "I think the fear of how bad thenext shot would be was worse than most of the pain."

The next day a few small incisions could be seen where theneedles had punctured her skin and there was a lump betweenthe eyes and in a couple of other areas, which she was toldneeded to be massaged further into the skin.Patients can experience these bumps, redness, and somebruising after the treatment and mineral makeup cancamouflage most of this.

For Horton, her skin felt a little tighter and slightly bumpythe day after the treatment. Two days later she had sore-to-touch bumps over her face. "I had to wear a lot of make-up asmy skin was red and uneven," she says. "A small bruise undermy eye spread and it was quite noticeable. It took a week for myskin to settle."

Botulinum toxin is used inClinic 42's Photo Finishtreatment.

It's not a facial where you fall asleep but it'snot uncomfortable."

Her skin went a light pink colour when she walked out."There wasn't any downtime needed as such, however with allthe actives seeping deep into the skin I was reluctant to thenput make-up back on," she says. WHERE: SKINFRESH CLINICBest for stubborn pockets of fat that diet and exercisejustcan't remove, truSculpt 3D is a body sculpting treatmentoffering up to 24 per cent fat thickness reduction in asingle treatment.WHAT TO EXPECT: A handpiece emitting safe radiofrequency waves is lightly glided over the skin and the heatdispersed damages and kills fat cells to eradicate them forever.

It can be used on hard-to-get-to areas,•^—^-^^—^— including the chin, underarm fat and thigh.

Erin Berryman tried the treatment on herhips. The appointment took 30 minutes, 15minutes per side.

"It's like an ultrasound. Gel is applied tothe area and a machine glides over it. Themachine starts off lukewarm, then graduallygets warmer until your fat cells reach atemperature high enough to kill them off."

Although the heat became uncomfortableat times, she says it was an effortlesstreatment. "It was definitely a walk-intreatment with no downtime or pain reliefneeded afterwards.HIDDEN BENEFITS: On average, patients

see a reduction in fat in around six to 12 weeks and continuingimprovements for up to three months. Because the results canbe slow-moving, the clinic takes their own measurements andphotos and offers a follow-up appointment booked at 12 weeksto see the improvements.

"It's reassuring that the treatment involves a follow-up. Ithink it's especially important with a gradual treatment asthe changes can be hard to notice when they're slower," saysBerryman.
