Dear Family,

The images of clay pots being formed (on our cover) remind us vividly that the nurturing and challenging that we do here is about what we are becoming and what is worth becoming, as we grow together. Watching the artist use the right balance of materials and tools, time, pressure, and a vision of the

future to gradually transform something shapeless and useless into something of beauty and significance is a beautiful image of the Brentwood Academy community as we watch God at work.

As we look back over our short history we can see how God has used many different people, circumstances, and challenges to help grow us into the school and the people we are today. As we watch patterns emerge, whether in our own lives or in the life of a community like ours, it is exciting to note that we are shaped not by just one choice but by the series of choices that we make.

It has been exhilarating for our family to be a part of a community where people recognize that God has given us reason and intellect and physical ability, along with imagination and faith and perseverance, for a purpose that goes beyond the circumstances of the moment. As we walked through this year with some unexpected challenges we are so grateful to be in a place where people recognize the value

“Maggie is part of BA’s foundation…she was here before we were. She has stayed with us through thick and thin...even in the early years when we innocently parked our cars on her property at Friday night football games! Maggie has a servant’s heart...even today in the early mornings you will see Maggie walking Maryland Way picking up paper and cleaning the streets...no credit...just loving Brentwood. She continues to attend BA ball games and school functions and serves as our resident expert on horticulture. Maggie is the reason we were able to stay in our present location as she made her property available to the school. It would be so easy for her to be resentful of our early intrusion to the quiet Brentwood life that I know she loved, but she welcomed us and for that I will always be eternally grateful.”

Meet Our Neighbor, Maggie SpeightBy Carolyn Dobbins, BA Faculty

Amid the flurry of activity at Brentwood Academy, more than a few people have pondered how very convenient it would be to live “on campus.” Oh, the hours that could be saved if time were not spent traveling from home to school and then back again.

Only one person, Maggie Pierce Speight, enjoys the privilege of an on-campus life. As a matter of fact, she lived on campus before there was a campus. Her situation is unique because she didn’t move to Brentwood Academy. Brentwood Academy came to her.

Her campus home, a few yards from the Art House, has quite a history. The original structure built in the early 1900’s looked quite different from the attractive place seen today. She and her husband, the late Felix Harley Speight, began purchasing land on Granny White Pike in the early fifties from Tede Mayfield, who had inherited a farm from her mother.

They bought “a little bit at a time,” and after several transactions, they had twenty acres and two small houses. One of the houses was a special brand of house, a storehouse. After cleaning out the storehouse and renovating, they moved in and lived there from 1953 until 1964.

During their time in the corner cottage, they were working on renovating and adding to the other dwelling, and when their dream house was ready, they moved a few paces down the road to the house that would be Maggie’s even today.

In 1965, shortly after settling in to their new place, Felix, her husband of thirteen years, died suddenly after suffering a heart attack in the front yard. In spite of the fact that Maggie would not consider moving after this tragic loss, she was aggressively pursued by many people wanting to buy her property. She lost count of the times she emphatically declared, “My land is not for sale.” The aggressors were not deterred by her declaration and worked tirelessly to change her mind.

Her mind would not be changed. She had settled in to her home, and no one was going to unsettle her from the home she loved and enjoyed.

When representatives from Brentwood Academy began chatting with her about the possibility of her land becoming part of the Brentwood Academy campus, she--for the first time--really listened. Their offer was intriguing. If the school could buy her property, she would have a guarantee that she would never have to leave her home. It would be hers and hers alone until her death. After many months of talking and negotiations, she agreed to sell. The closing came with a great deal of peace. The school had the land for their campus, and she had her home. It was a perfect deal and was “sealed” in 1999.

I know that God makes each one of us uniquely; but I believe with Maggie Speight, He made her even more uniquelier!

I first met Mrs. Speight when we were doing some campus improvements in the early 1990’s. BA was trying to be a good neighbor, but we inadvertently did some things that weren’t too neighborly. I talked to Maggie. She explained to me what a good neighbor looks like. She taught me much about how to treat people. I will never forget that.

Maggie Speight is a true Renaissance person. She’s done everything; she’s been everywhere (or is planning to go there!). She knows hard work, and the value of doing a job well. She is a true patriot; she speaks up for our country, and against

wrongdoing. For quite a long time, she attended every City Commission meeting in the City of Brentwood; it was said that the meetings couldn’t start until Maggie was there!

She reads, she travels, she works, she builds, she’s a shrewd business-woman; she plants, she bakes, she is involved heavily in the arts, she takes classes...the list goes on.

But what makes Maggie Speight who she is, is her heart. She is without a doubt, the sweetest, kindest, loveliest, most generous lady I know. When she picks up trash on her walk, or drives a friend to the doctor, or cares for her brother, we see who Maggie Speight really is. I love to sit and talk with her, because when I see her, I am truly seeing the face of Jesus.

I am so blessed to call Maggie Speight my friend.

For all the years since, she has happily witnessed the ever-expanding growth of Brentwood Academy, but not from a rocking chair. Maggie is the “honorary” horticulturist for the campus, keeping a sharp eye on the condition of campus trees and plants. As a member of the school’s Advisory Board, she is often spotted at school events and athletic activities.

She retired from Nashville Gas Company in 1988 after 45 years of exemplary service. Her years of service began April 29, 1943, when she went to the company to “help out for a while” because they needed a good employee, and she was available to fill the need. At the time she was a young girl from Mississippi, who had come to Nashville to attend business school. She continued to fill the need until 1988.

Since retirement her active lifestyle would be hard for many--even those much younger--to maintain. Now in her eighties (“and yet far from ninety,” she maintains), she can be seen hurrying down Maryland Way picking up trash, walking to the grocery store even though she can drive anywhere she so desires, working in her immaculate yard and garden, and even climbing a ladder to clean passion flower, the Tennessee state wildflower, from her gazebo (see picture).

She has endeared herself to many at BA for her special delivery service of vegetables from her garden, especially the tomatoes, and for running a shuttle service to get friends to the doctor. (Some of these people are younger than she is). If someone needs directions to a destination, Maggie has been known to say, “I’ll drive you there.”

She mowed her own grass until her beloved lawnmower “gave out” after thirty-five years of faithful service. She found it impossible to replace because “they just don’t make them the way they used to.” The BA maintenance crew now handles this task under her watchful eye.

She does indeed have quite a list of activities on the resume of her life that no one else in her age group can boast about. For example, Williamson County owes her a debt of gratitude for helping decrease the skunk population. In just one year, she has trapped thirteen skunks in her trap (see picture on page 4) along with a nice variety of raccoons, groundhogs, and squirrels.

In addition to pursueing an active lifestyle in her corner of her Tennessee world, she is also a world traveler.

Beginning with a trip to Venezuela to visit her brother in 1951, she has developed a passion for traveling. Her many international journeys have taken her to Jamaica, Cuba, England, France, Malta, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Her next excursion--this time to Croatia--is scheduled for March.

Mrs. Speight is like family to me. She is my next door grandmother. She is always there for me. She teaches me. She inspires me. She encourages me. One day I would like to be as wise, compassionate, hard working and humble as she is. She is a blessing to me and I will always be grateful that sheis a part of my life.

“I have many more to get to,” she declares. Those who know Maggie Speight have every reason to believe she will see them all.

• Congratulations to seniors Jeff Davis, Anita Mathews and Rob Murphy who have been named National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Over 1.4 million students in the United States and several foreign countries competed in this program with only 15,000 finalists being selected. The finalists will receive college scholarships based on their college selection. Named commended students were seniors Katrina Adlerz, Michael Bearden, John Reagan Moore and Joseph Storey.

• Spiritual Emphasis Week in January featured guest speakers Grammy Award Winner Cece Winans, former Wake Forest basketball player and author Alan Williams, missionary and author Gracia Burnham and BA alumnus Ray Mullican ‘80. The purpose of Spiritual Emphasis Week, whose them this year was “Got Joy?,” is to offer students the opportunity to hear from people who have a spiritual story to share. The week was under the direction of Spiritual Life Director Rian Berger.

• Congratulations to the 2008 Regional Scholastic Art Winners whose work is displayed at Cheekwood. Gold Key winners were junior Chase Long (printmaking) and senior Holden Head (photography). Silver Key winners included senior Kymberly Doyle (printmaking), senior Maggie Arnold (painting) and senior Ryan vonDohlen (photography portfolio and photography). Brentwood Academy art teachers are Debbie Dunn, Janet Laws and Jim Chapman.

• Junior Monique Batson has been accepted to the Governor’s School for Humanities, which will be held on the UT Martin campus this summer.

• Middle school seventh and eighth graders took class trips this winter. The seventh graders traveled to Berry College in Rome, Georgia, to attend Camp WinShape Wilderness. Activities included a high ropes challenge course and arts and crafts activities. The eighth grade class journeyed to the Florida Keys for a four day Sea Camp adventure. The students studied marine biology, learned to snorkel and to observe sea life and toured the Everglades.

• The annual student talent show featured 18 acts and was sponsored by the Fine Arts Department. The overall winner was senior Sarah Norby doing sign language to the song “Popular” from the musical “Wicked.” Middle school winners were seventh graders Elliott Huff and Jake Dagostino playing drums and electric guitar and singing “Purple Haze.” The upper school winner was senior Matthew Rosenbaum singing and playing the piano to a song entitled “Mary May and Bobby.” Faculty member Maribeth Johnson was show director.

• Sixty upper school students attended the Model United Nations program in November. They represented 16 countries. Anita Mathews was president of the General Assembly; Colleen Boyle and Katrina Adlerz were vice presidents of the General Assembly; Caroline Askew was the vice president of the Security Council; Cara Beth Heath was the General Assembly Liaison, and Elizabeth Kidd was the Print Editor of the conference newspaper. The delegation was sponsored by faculty member Barbara Stewart.

• Brentwood Academy science faculty member Dr. Rene Rochester is the author of a recently published book entitled The Love of the Game. Whether you are an avid sports fan, participant, coach or none of the above, this story, told by a former dual collegiate athlete and coach, will show you the Christian life in a whole new way.

• Forty-eight BA middle school students attended the Model United Nations program sponsored by the YMCA. The delegations of Syria (Graham Shuler, Will Fitts, Christian Carpenter), Namibia (Caroline Greene, Kelsi Ray, Caroline Lee), Cameroon (Lincoln Priest, Shannon Stiles, Allie Shelton), and Cambodia (Haley Buske, Brennan Sehrt, Sarah Browning) all presented resolutions that passed the General Assembly while Samantha Becci, Sarah Browning, Wesley Cates, Bryce Pryor, and Graham Shuler were recognized as outstanding delegates. Awards for outstanding resolution were presented to the delegations of Albania (Tanner Poss, Alan Behktyar), Cambodia (Haley Buske, Brennan Sehrt, Sarah Browning) and Paraguay (Jenni Higgins, Abby Gaudette, Rachel Frey). Faculty member Marshall Smith ‘92 sponsored the student delegations.

Through the FACES cultural exchange program, two Guatemalan students, Juan Carlos Soto and Maria Minas, attended BA for the second quarter. Leslie Cohea ‘98 shares with juniors Ginna Claire Mason and Savannah Ellis her experiences in the music business. Leslie works with a company that plans and produces music concerts. All upper school students had the opportunity to visit career booths set up in the gymnasium. Career Day, held every other year, is sponsored by the Alumni Council under the direction of Alumni Director Lulu Clark ‘76.

Debbie Rowan ‘87 works as a clinical psychologist with Volunteer Behavioral Health Care Systems in Murfreesboro and informed students about this interesting field of work.

CAREER DAY AT BA

The 2007 Fine Art Show and Sale in Brentwood, held for three days in December, saw 71 regional and local artists exhibit their work and sell over $315,000 of art. Making this BAPA-sponsored event “happen” so successfully were (from left) Elizabeth Lewis, Ellen Adams, Sharon Harper and Mary Lee Bartlett. Senior Sarah Norby received the Joe Campbell Service Award during Spiritual Emphasis Week. Presenting the award to Sarah is Mrs. Carolyn Campbell. The award goes to the student who has shown leadership in and a passion for service both at BA and in the community.

Kathy Wheeler Bradford ’76 will complete her master’s degree in Christian Education from Louisville Baptist Seminary this spring. As part of her degree requirements she is working in an internship at Grace Chapel, Liepers Fork, Tennessee.

Van Wadlington ’78 is a neuroradiologist at St. Vincent’s and Brookwood Hospitals in Birmingham, where he lives with wife, Shannon, and sons Brett and Tyler.

Cathy Fleet Nash ’79 writes “My husband and I have two children in college: our son is at UGA and our daughter is at Georgia Tech. We still stay busy juggling schedules and the numerous extracurricular activities of our two kids who are still at home. I enjoy teaching a women’s Bible study and also attend a weekly Precept Bible study. When I’m not in the car, I spend most of my time painting and sculpting. Recently, I launched a website which showcases my watercolor paintings

Mary Whitaker Stanford ’80 is working at Southern Land Company in the Mixed Use Development division supporting the Senior Vice President of Retail Leasing. She is married to Don and has two children. Michael is in a rock band called Victory at Last which has won the first of two rounds of BO DOG Battle of the Bands in Nashville. They also

have a daughter, Crystal, who is to be married in July.

Kent Austin ‘81 is the new offensive coordinator at Ole Miss, his alma mater, where he played football as an undergraduate. Austin left the Canadian Football League where he led the Roughriders to the Grey Cup last season.

Mike MacIntyre ’84 will join new head football coach David Cutcliff at Duke University as defensive coordinator for the football team. He formerly coached with Cutcliff at Ole Miss. In the interim, Mike has coached for the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets.

Mary Love Patton ‘85 is working with Prudential Realty in Brentwood.

Marlo Tipton ’85 is working in the pharmaceutical industry for Mission Pharmacal, after being in politics for 13 years. She is also completing her ex-officio year with the Junior Auxillary of Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Charlie Hynes ’86 has taken a new job as Director of Distribution for A. C. More in the southern area of New Jersey and will be moving to that area in the near future.

Sharon Wade Kinser ‘86 and her college roommate have launched Share the Son, LLC. featuring cool clothing with a message. The original logo is a double lined icsthus fish enclosing the words “Heaven is better.” The t-shirt based line of apparel has expanded to hoodies, canvas totes and more. The “Heaven is Better” gear can be found at www.sharetheson.com

Rob Rogers ‘88 has written a novel called Devil’s Cape, which is scheduled for release on April 1, 2008 and available on Amazon.com

Jason Patrick ’89, along with wife Christi and children George, Vivian and James, are living in the Dallas area where Jason is in his 14th year with Coca-Cola Enterprises.

Billy Whitaker ’89 is head wrestling coach and assistant football coach at Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville.

John Schoew ’90 and family moved to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in May, 2007. John is in his fifth year at Good Harbor Consulting, where he is senior vice president for International Programs and specializes in critical infrastructure, protection, counterterrorism, risk management and security planning.

Al Allen’91 has been named to the Belmont Universty’s Bruins Sports Hall of Fame. Al played center for four years on the Belmont basketball team.

Scott Holmes ‘91 is a partner with Hinson, Holmes & Newton, LLC. They focus on Investment and Insurance planning for individuals and small businesses. The firm has a combined 36 years experience in the financial services industry in Middle Tennessee.

Tandy (Matt) Wilson ’96 and his wife, Anne Kostroski, have opened an Italian restaurant called the City House in the Germantown area of Nashville. Both are chefs and met while working in the Napa Valley of California. Both honed their culinary skills in Italy.

Matt Brown ’97 is in his final year of the Masters Divinity program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

Kelly Hammond ‘97 is living in Zurich, Switzerland, and is working for F. Hoffman-La Roche Ltd. in Basel, Switzerland.

Travis Robeson ‘97 is an agent with the Williamson County office of Fridrich and Clark Realty. He earned his brokers license from the Tennessee Real Estate Commission. Travis also earned the designation of Graduate Realtor Institute by the National Association of Realtors.

Jason Rowlett ’97 completed a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee in May, 2007, and is currently employed by the Social Security Administration in Columbia, Tennessee.

Cindi Burger Barrett ’98 is a recovery nurse in Nashville and is taking classes at Trevecca to receive her master’s degree in counseling.

Fran Goodwin ’98 is a sales coordinator for CAO International.

Lauren Wynn Moss ‘99 received her J.D. degree from the Nashville School of Law in May, 2007. During law school, she worked as a law clerk for the Williamson County Circuit Court Judges in Franklin, where she did legal research and observed court proceedings. She is now working

Andrew Causey ‘00 is Minister of Music and Worship at Woodburn Baptist Church in Woodburn, Kentucky, and is attending Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Jennifer Garman Rowlett ’00 has joined the law firm of Parker, Lawrence, Cantrell, and Dean as an associate. She is a magna cum laude graduate from the University of Tennessee College of Law and holds an undergraduate degree from Centre College.

Lauren Wyatt ’00 is teaching English at Ensworth High School. She is a graduate of Grove City College.

Ashley Davis ’00 graduated in August from Vanderbilt with an MSN in Health System Management and is now the assistant manager of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of Tennessee.

Katie Hagan Hinson ’01 and her husband, Shae, run a nonprofit organization called Every Tribe, Inc. a group that helps send Christ-followers to share Christ to nonbelievers all over the world. They live in Macon, Georgia with one year old Annabelle.

Graham Nelson ’01 completed his master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech and is working for NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center as part of the solid booster analytics team.

Jake Slaughter ’01 is with State Farm insurance. Jake has just been drafted by the new All American Professional Football League, which is taking the place of the NFL Europe. Team Tennessee drafted him and he will be playing his games at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville starting this April.

Duncan Blount ’02 graduated from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix with an MBA in International Finance/Emerging Markets and has taken a job with Ronin Capital Management, a hedge fund, in Miami as a Macro/Commodities Analyst.

Stephanie Bowen ’02 is living in California and is working for a television production company. One BA winterim group met with her while they traveled to California.

Sarah James Tripp Myatt ‘02 has joined J.E. Crain & Son General Contractor in Nashville as a project coordinator. She is a May 2007 graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.S. in building construction. She and her husband Jacob, a residential contractor, recently built their home in Fairview.

Quentin Miller ‘02 graduates in April from Infantry Officers Course as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He is stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego and will be deployed to Okinawa in July. He had abook review published in the March, 2008, issue of MarineCorps Gazette entitled “The Courage to Control Fear,” a review of Courage and Fear: A Primer by Col. Wesley L. Fox, USMC(Ret).

Joanna Causey Michael ‘02 and husband, Nathan, have accepted a missionary call to Cameroon. They will complete their studies in Dallas in June, go to France for further language training (Cameroon is a French speaking country), and then head to Cameroon as Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Jackson Brasher ’03 graduated from the University of Virginia in May and works for the Advisory Board Company, a healthcare research/consulting firm in Washington, DC.

Flynt Foster ‘03 graduated from the University of Tampa in May, 2007, and is back in his college town, Tampa, working for a theatre traveling group.

Aaron Hall ’03 is attending law school at the University of Memphis.

Anna McKaskle ’03 graduated magna cum laude from Auburn University in December, 2007. She is a communications consultant with IBM in Atlanta.

Rebecca McKaskle ’03 graduated magna cum laude from Auburn University in December, 2007. She is a consultant in Financial Services with IBM in Atlanta.

Daniel Bradfield ‘04 is a civil engineering officer in the U.S. Air Force and will be stationed for the next three years at Eielson Air Force Base just outside of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Sarah Landolt ’04, a student at Murray State University, has had a collection of her art work displayed in Ordway Hall on the school’s campus. Sarah is a French major but excels in working in acrylics.

Kyle Booten ‘04 has been inducted into the Princeton University Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Kyle has the distinction of being one of 16 seniors selected to receive an early election to Phi Beta Kappa based on his academic achievement at Princeton.

Shay Laws ’04 has just accepted a position with Teach For America. She will have a two year commitment teaching in the Las Vegas Valley school system. TFA is a national teacher corps of recent college graduates who are highly motivated to “make a difference” and pledge a two year contract to teach in understaffed urban or rural public schools. Shay is a senior at DePauw University.

Andrew Bumbalough ‘05 finished 22nd in the NCAA division I Cross Country Championship held at Terra Haute, Indiana on November 19, 2007. For this accomplishment, he received All American Honors for 2007. He attends Georgetown University and led them to finish 13th in the nation. Recently Andrew was one of a handful of event winners at the 2008 Giegengack Invitational, hosted by Yale University at the Coxe Cage in New Haven, Conn. and his 3:58.46 is an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Bumbalough’s performance in the men’s mile set the standard and he now ranks second on Georgetown’s all-time indoor mile list.

Sterling Foster ’06 is a sophomore at Harding University, where he walked on and made the varsity soccer team.

Kyndal Bradford ’07 has been accepted for a semester study abroad at Oxford University, Oxford England for fall semester, 2008.

Victoria Dunlap ’07 has been chosen by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame as “Female Amateur Athlete of the Year.” Her outstanding accomplishments in track and field have merited this honor. She currently attends the University of Kentucky on both basketball and track scholarships.

Preston Walls ’07 was selected to receive the Michael C. McCollum Scholarship for the 2007-2008 school year. He is pursuing a degree in music business at Belmont University

Lauren Rogers portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past while Ryan Coil portrays Ebenezer Scrooge, both pursuing Jacob Marley as played by Matthew Rosenbaum.

The Brentwood Academy Fine Arts Department produced Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol for this year’s fall performance. The classic Victorian drama follows the infamous Ebenezer Scrooge on is journey to redemption. Led by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, Scrooge undergoes a dramatic rebirth as he attempts to escape thetortured fate promised him by his late business associate, Jacob Marley. The production was directed by John Cox ‘00 and drew large crowds throughout the three performances which ran in November.

Bryce Prior played the role of Willie Wonka in the middle school production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

In January, the Fine Arts Department and a cast of middle school students took on the challenge of bringing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to life on the Brentwood Academy stage. The three performances allowed the large cast and crew to show their talents to full houses. Faculty member Jenifferlee Dake directed the production.
