Energy requirement

Data centres have enormous power and cooling loads in order to maintain

a continuous and stable operation. Whilst advances in processor, storage

and virtualisation technologies have delivered improvements in power

usage effectiveness (PUE) a continuous market expansion requires an

increase in supplied power. With energy typically representing 80% of

annual operational costs the opportunity to make significant savings

through the use of energy equipment has never been greater.

Assessment

As consultant engineers, project managers and

Carbon Trust consultants; ESP undertake detailed

energy assessments to first understand the energy

used on site and to establish the data centre

infrastructure efficiency (DCiE). Inspection and

monitoring of cooling systems performance and

power use is a fundamental requirement and often

provides valuable insight into quick low cost wins.

Optimise

We will undertake a review of the infrastructure identifying improvements such as managing airflow, identifying hot

aisle and cold aisle improvements as well as working with specialists to identify improvements in hardware and

software optimisation. This process ensures that the full benefit can be achieved following the installation of high

efficiency plant.

Install

Existing data centres typically use grid based electricity to power all elements

of the site, which includes the IT and cooling equipment.

Tri-generation is achieved when on site plant generates electricity, heating

and then cooling by using a natural gas combined heat and power engine

(CHP). Within a tri-generation system; generated electricity replaces grid

based power and the heat is converted to cooling using an absorption chiller,

With gas typically costing a third of the cost of grid based electricity significant

savings and other benefit can be achieved.

CUSTOM SOLUTIONS

Every CHP or trigen installation

undertaken by ESP is carefully

designed to optimise efficiency

and to improve viability.

Establishing a heating base

load is key to increased

efficiency and through the

integration of thermal stores for

hot water storage or, for

example, developing load

through the use of absorption

cooling load, efficiencies are

maximized.

WEB SOLUTIONS

Whilst fully remotely monitored

solutions are available for your

trigen plant, we can provide a

SMS based alert system

directly to your mobile and web

based interface without any

monthly charge.

ENERGY MONITORING

ESP can provide metering

solutions that comply with your

monitoring and targeting

objectives, or that simply inform

you of energy generated, exported

or used on site.

Energy distribution

Benefits of co- and tri-generation are:

Economic benefits: The benefits for the data centre owner/operator are economic. Energy

costs of tri-generation units are significantly lower than grid based power.

Reduction in Carbon Tax: Businesses can claim enhanced capital allowances and the

scheme can also allows exemption from the climate change levy whilst also contributing to the

reduction of taxes associated with the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC).

Increased power availability: The successful installation of trigeneration will provide

increased power availability and will improve reliability.

Emissions reduction: CO2 emissions are reduced drastically both as a result of the increased

efficiency and the production of electricity locally.

Increase of the reliability of the energy supply: When the trigeneration system is connected

in parallel to the grid it provides a permanent dual source in case of interruption of the centre’s

supply.
