TRELLEBORG AWARDED MOSE FLOOD DEFENCE CONTRACT, VENICE 

Trelleborg has been awarded the contract for the design and installation of a bespoke sealing system for the MOSE project in Venice, Italy, designed to safeguard the Venetian Lagoon, Venice and its neighbouring cities from the threat of high tidal variation.  

The €7billion MOSE project, which is expected to be completed in 2014, is designed to provide flood protection through the installation of 78 mobile barriers, which will be activated when the tides reaches 110 centimeters inside the 500 square‐kilometer Venetian lagoon, at the Lido (Lido San Nicolò), Malamocco and Chioggia inlets, separating the Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. 

Trelleborg Infrastructure will supply multiple bespoke sealing system solutions including a combination of its high quality Seismic Gina gaskets – this is a moulded and handmade seal with the highest tolerances, produced and tested according to the highest possible standards.‐  and Omega seals. Acting as a dynamic seal ensuring closed watertight protection, the closed Gina gasket will be mounted to the barriers, while Trelleborg’s Omega seal will act as a secondary seal between the sectional elements of the mobile barriers, The water in the flap gates will be expelled by compressed causing them to rise and  block the lagoon. 

The requirements of the authorities were extremely strict, a functionality guaran‐tee of 120 years, which matches the design & construct specification, is given. The Gina seals are made of Natural Rubber with the main feature that it is extremely resilient, even with seismic movements. Furthermore all the seals were custom made to order. One of the main reasons for choosing Trelleborg Infrastructure is that the system has a proven functionality with many references globally. Another important feature desired by the client is the ease of installation.
